how do you imitate the danganronpa style so well?? it's always so good!!

Great Question!

First, having a somewhat decent grasp on anatomy (which is something I still need to practice lol) or “the basics” of character art is always a must imo. Having a good understanding of forms is our starting grounds for further stylization. Think of it as the “skeleton” of any style. Moreover, the Danganronpa style comes in various forms, all with different characteristics/visual characteristics.

However, and I think this is a very important distinction, I try to study Rui Komatsuzaki’s overall style as opposed to just Danganronpa. In other words, Rui Komatsuzaki, like any other creative, has his own personal stylization and artistic evolution throughout his career as an illustrator.

In DR1, Komatsuzaki’s style included much thinner lineart, bigger heads, and more gradients with the softer shading. The vibe is very much more “grounded” compared to later titles. (Example: Toko!)

In contrast, DR2 has slightly modified proportions (like bigger hands), simplified shading, and much more vibrant color palettes. The line art during this time was also streamlined with less lines and thicker pen pressure. It makes the sprites pop out a bunch! (Example: Mahiru!)

Of course, with UDG, we see these two styles somewhat overlap, resembling his later stylization. Here we see the modified proportions and color preferences from DR2 with the thinner linework and detail of DR1. (See Toko Again!)

Finally, we see this similar style philosophy continued in V3, only with even more contrasting colors, reflecting the hyper bright/attention grabbing palettes of serialized work. The shading is much darker than previous titles, and somewhat colder too. (See Miu this time.)

Of course, with all of this in mind, taking notes is imperative! Especially if you want to replicated a specific entry’s stylization. You can draw over some of the dr sprites just to get a general feel of the proportions. I can probably post more latter down the line, but this was the most recent thing I’ve done. See below! (I was trying to get a sense of how “high” the hair sits on top of dr)

Now, for his splash art work, Komatsuzaki’s began his process by blocking out his pieces in bluish hues before the polishing phase. he most likely applied a mix of “color”, “multiply”, or “color dodge” once we finishes rendering for finalizing colors. (As depicted below.)

You can also see how Komatsuzaki simplifies clothing and the like. He very much uses thicker brush work for these types of illustrations as opposed to the lines of his 2D work during this point in his career. Future points show how he plans his stuff with more thin line work. From here he most likely did the same thing. Focusing on the forms before getting to the hues and values

Sorry for going on a bit of a tangent, I have A LOT of thoughts on DR and Komatsuzaki’s artwork in general. I really love seeing his process, so I hope this brief overview can provide as a decent introduction! Reze deliberately not having her choker here is intriguing to me.

Like, I highly doubt this was simply an accident; the choker is arguably the most important aspect of her design, and Fujimoto not drawing it in two panels is odd. I wonder if Denji views Reze’s choker as a symbol of her initial inauthenticity.

Reze was, after all, putting up an act to achieve her mission. The main purpose of the choker was to cover up her devil trigger, which is also not drawn here. Regardless of Reze’s true motivation, the feelings Denji felt towards her were real. Fujimoto purposely positioned Reze to highlight how much Denji genuinely enjoyed her presence. He wanted to believe in the lie of them running away together. The lie of them—literally and figuratively—being freed from their collars. To pursue greater happiness and purpose. Together.

But that figurative life he could have had with her is all but a lost opportunity now. Along with the other losses and tragedies in his life. Ouch……no wonder Denji buried everything down….

Fumiko’s presence in part 2 intrigues me so much….

Initially, I really didn’t care for her too much. In fact, I was kinda annoyed when she was playing under the guise of “helping Denji.”

HOWEVER, Fumiko’s character really started to grow on me when the story confirmed that she’s way more sinister than she lets on. Now, I’m way more fascinated as to what her whole deal is.

First off, she most likely isn’t a normal human being. Devil Hunters are required to have a devil contract, even newbies. In fact, devil hunters are the only group of people granted permission to legally have devil contracts, especially powerful devils. So Fumiko has to be contracted with some kind of devil, especially someone of her status within Public Safety’s Tokyo Special Division 7.

Of course, it’s possible that Fumiko isn’t human at all. Some suggest that she could just be a human-like devil (implying that Fumiko, like Makima, is naturally very fond of humans). She does have unique eyes. If she was meant to be a generic devil hunter, Fujimoto could have just given her regular solid color eyes. As such, the most common theory I see is that Fumiko is the Death Devil, the Final Horseman.

But….I really don’t think she’s a devil or a fiend for that matter…lemme explain:

Yes, Fumiko does have a unique eyes, but they don’t quite match the “swirl” eyes of the other Horsemen. And, thematically, I don’t think Fumiko being the death devil would be all that compelling. Death is such an endgame presence that I feel like Fumiko being revealed as Death would be kinda…underwhelming? Idk, that’s just me. Moreover, I also don’t think she’s a fiend either. The main identifier of a fiend is that there needs to be something unique about their head: Power had horns, Galgali/the Violence fiend had two sets of eyes under his mask, Beam’s head was shaped like a shark, etc. In comparison, Fumiko looks normal. She doesn’t have anything visibly wrong with her head or face. So….here’s my theory….

Fumiko might be something similar to Asa and Yoru.

Ok, so, this is purely speculation, but people were already highlighting the similarities between Asa and Fumiko (from their appearances to their motivations to save/protect Denji). Fumiko also acts kinda strange and somewhat inconsistent while mysteriously being able to disappear at random (granted, I’m 99.9% sure she twisting the truth she told Denji her “backstory”, or at least purposefully omitted key information). So what if the contract she has with her devil is similar to what Asa and Yoru have? That could be why Fumiko was assigned as a representative during the meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister. Or why she specifically was assigned to be Denji’s “bodyguard.” It could also offer an explanation as to why she acts in different manner sometimes (I don bring this up to justify Fumiko’s actions towards Denji, I think she’s still a terrible person with or without the influence of a devil).

Perhaps this is why she’s considered Yoshida’s Junior despite being older than him. Fumiko could be the result of a side project Public Safety has been working on. In fact, I’d imagine she probably have a more mutual relationship with whatever devil she is, hypothetically, bonded with. Like, they both use one another for the benefit of each other’s goals, they could be much more in tune with one another. What Asa and Yoru could become.

Another detail about Asa/Yoru is whenever Yoru takes control of Asa, her scar (and maybe her swirl eyes) most likely don’t appear to the other characters in the manga. No one else points the scar’s presence out. That visual distinction is purely for us the audience. So…maybe Fumiko does in fact have something similar, but we can’t see it cuz part two isn’t from her POV. It would also explain why she seemed to realize something was wrong when Chainsaw Man erased mouths (like how Yoru was with ears). Maybe a devil’s influence gives her more awareness? Idk.

But….I’m probably gonna be completely wrong lol. These are just my own thoughts, and Fumiko could just turn out to be the Death devil or a normal human lol. After all, this is a story written by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Anything is fair game.

Who is Fumiko?

Let's talk about Fumiko for a moment.

When we first meet Fumiko she is introduced as a Public Safety officer who has been tasked with guarding Denji, she treats Yoshida as her senior, despite her being older than him, and her story about being present when Denji fought and killed Aki would mean that she's fairly new to the job. When it came to actually protecting Denji she wasn't too impressive either; she chose to finish singing and dancing instead of fighting off the conga line of dudes with bats, when Barem met them on the mall roof it had to be Quanxi who saved them, when it came to the fire at Denji's place she and her back up were all taken down with ease, and when things started to get hairy she ditched him and Nayuta at the drop of a hat.

Overall she's been presented as someone who is not very good at her job.

But then we got to the most recent chapter, and I think everyone really needs to think about this.

Fumiko is talking to the heads of the Japanese government, acting as a representative to Public Safety, relaying to them important and vital information about not just their research and findings on Chainsaw Man and his reality warping powers, but their dealings with a Primal Fear Devil and the heavy contract it wishes to enact.

That is not a task you give out lightly. That is not a job you give to some freshly hired newbie off the street, that is not a task you give someone unless they can handle that immense responsibility. This position of authority that Fumiko is presented with is similar to what Makima had.

She was also the only person who was reacting to not having a mouth, like she knew she didn't have a mouth.

I'm beginning to think that there is far more important than we have been led to believe.
