Japanese Media that Helped Me Come Out

Hey, I wanted to make a post about the shows and movies from Japan that really helped me come to terms with my identity and made me more comfortable with coming out (even if I had a few early aborted comings out before I had real support). Before I begin, a special shoutout has to be given to Ranma 1/2, the first anime I ever saw that involved gender changing content.

I think one of the first foundationally important bits of media for me was Sailor Moon, the original animated series. Or more specifically season 5, Bishouji Senshi Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. This is a series I watched shortly after the episodes aired in four episode blocks at a time on rented VHS tapes from a local Japanese Electronics Store in Dallas, Texas. (R.I.P. Orbit Electronics).

For those not familiar with the series, this season introduces three major new heroic characters, the Sailor Starlights. In their civilian identities they are a boys idol group called The Three Lights and go by the names Seiya, Yaten and Taiki but in their heroic identities they are three women named Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Healer and Sailor Star Maker.

The idea of three women hiding themselves in the guise of men was so fascinating to me and spoke to something deep down inside of me. This may be the reason why Sailor Stars is the series I decided to purchase on Laserdisc back when it was coming out.

The second major anime series from this time that was foundational for my exploration of who I am was 1997's Shoujo Kakumei Utena.

This is a series all about defying societal expectations especially of gender roles and sexuality. It's an amazing if sometimes very couched in metaphor and symbolism coming of age story about a young woman who refuses to conform to her expected role and seeks to become a Prince to defend others. It also contains dialogue like this:

Which, if you are familiar with Trans terminology just holds so much extra meaning. For those who do not know, trans people who have not come out yet are often referred to as eggs, as in they have not come out of their shell yet. Lastly is probably both the most obvious and most ridiculous entry here. the 1999 Rock and Roll, Zombie, Alien Invasion film Wild Zero. This is a movie about the rock band Guitar Wolf, their biggest fan Ace and a zombie apocalypse started by aliens (think Plan 9 from Outer Space but somehow even more wild and ridiculous and with an amazing soundtrack). In the movie, Ace meets and falls in love with a beautiful girl named Tobio.

However, as Ace discovers, Tobio has a penis. This causes him to have a bit of a crisis until his idol, Guitar Wolf appears before him in a bathroom to bestow these words of wisdom upon him.

So yeah, this movie helped me in some very strange ways when it came to accepting who I really am, even if it took YEARS for me to finally crack my shell for real and come out publicly. So, thanks for reading this and thanks for all of your support.

BOOK: #2

DATE: Winter 2002/2003

There are two entirely new characters here. I cannot remember if the guy on the left just had tools for hands or if he had similar powers to Metal- being able to shift his hands into metal implements. I want to say it’s the former because he was largely designed as a joke based off of a friend. Don’t ask me to explain the joke because I don’t know it! Either way, this unnamed character never shows up again. R.I.P. Mr. Shovelhands.

The girl on the right shows up a fair few times within the next two books, and though her name was unofficially “Jess,” I never really had a role for her other than an eccentric catgirl. Moving forward, she is only the first of many such catgirls I will be drawing.

Growing up, I had made it a point to use Felicia in any Capcom fighter than I could play. I liked cats and I think she was just really fun to play as, so I picked her as someone I could relate to, even if her flamboyant design made me a little uncomfortable. Read into this as you will.

Regardless, I don’t want to make the focus of this post too deep into catgirls and skimpy designs, because there’s going to be a gaggle of posts about that from this point to basically the last post I ever make on this blog.

I want to focus on the interpersonal aspect of this image:

Like I said these two and many other characters in the “Pyre story” canon are based on real people I knew. It is a typical thing for a creative kid to try to make cool characters for all their friends- though looking back, many of these characters are classmates I ultimately barely knew. Oddly enough, because I still remember the impetus of their creation being from a real person, they inevitably carry that person’s identity attached to them regardless of how long it’s been since I’ve seen them or really how close I ever was to that person. Because they had relationships to real people, that means that partially I took into account other aspects of their interpersonal life when I made their characters do things.

Jess is interacting with Mr. Shovelhands here in the flirtatious way she is because I was representing the fact that the real person Jess is based on admitted to me once that she was crushing on the real person Mr. Shovelhands is based on. I was always drawn to relationships and while most of the time I was using my work to depict my own self insert in relationship situations, I did apply that shipping mindset to other characters, and I used the real dynamics between people as a sort of naïve inspiration to create art.

The piece is titled “Ignorance” because that crush was ultimately unreciprocated and unknown to the real person Mr. Shovelhands is based on. I have no idea how any of it shook out, and I assume it just got totally swept out with the tide like most middle school crushes, but I find it fascinating that I have held onto this unbelievably forgettable minutia of a young girl’s life and channeled it into art and gave it a narrative to play in.

No matter the genre, my interest always seemed to move towards discussing this topic. Even the high flying action stories I was coming up with ultimately I would focus narrowly on stories about relationships, especially those of girls in love. Like I’ve said, I make no aspersions to use my current gender identity to explain the actions and creative interests of my past self, but it is interesting to wonder if this was an unconscious way for my younger repressed self to vicariously explore maidenhood and attraction to guys in a way that didn’t get me potentially persecuted for being homosexual. After all, it’s not as if homosexuality as a theme ever comes up in my art later on. Right?

Tbh, mine didn't come from any canon evidence, more from the thought of "Hey wouldn't it be fun if that changed Circe's Island?"

And it spiraled into me going "Ooh wouldn't that be fun in HoO if the amnesia cracked the egg?" "Wouldn't that be fun if Nico and Hazel had to contend with that?" "Wouldn't that be fun if every single Greek camper that was close with Percy figured it out before her and was just like 'FINALLY!'"

I basically saw a Circe post and yes-anded myself into looking for canon evidence

As far as things that led me to go, "yeah I think this is canon:"

A lot of the girls that express interest in Percy are sapphic coded. Obviously bisexuals exist (bi4bi Percabeth has my heart), but take Annabeth for example. The only boys she really shows attraction to are Luke, who she later realized was more like a brother and she was confused about her feelings, and Percy. Meanwhile, she's got a ton of gay subtext with Rachel, with Piper (dear god with Piper), some with Reyna even. Rachel also feels sapphic to me, although that's more vibes based than not.

Reyna reads a lot like a lesbian to me---her relationships with boys feel very performative and obligatory while her relationships with girls feel far more genuine. I think her feelings for Percy felt more genuine than her feelings for Jason (r.i.p. Jason, you accidentally fell for TWO comphet sapphics), and I read that as "That's because Percy's a girl, they just didn't know it at the time."

Piper felt less attracted to and impressed by Percy because she is a comphet sapphic who felt the need to go for the model of masculinity (Jason). Side-note: not to say Piper DIDN'T genuinely care about Jason or that she couldn't be interested in guys, but I think most people agree Jiper feels incredibly forced and shallow, and Piper being a comphet sapphic plays a HUGE role in that.

On the other end, Percy isn't Nico's type because his type is dudes and Percy is a girl.

Side note on Percabeth: their relationship feels EXTREMELY queer to me in a way that most of the other het relationships in the book do not. And it's hard to explain. It's a lot of just ✨️vibes✨️ Just the ways they choose to express affection and the ways they talk about each other and act around each other feels like reading a queer relationship. And part of that is because, even if we roll with Percy being a cis guy, they are both ridiculously bisexual, but I think the reason the vibes are so strong is because of transfem Percy.

Many goddesses who only seem to like girls are fond of Percy in a way they only really tolerate Satyrs. The Hunters of Artemis, Artemis herself, Aphrodite, etc. The only female goddesses I can think of who have real beef with Percy are Circe (because he sicced Pirates on her) and Hera (goddess of traditional cishet marriage values). Calypso's pissed at him for a bit, but she's not actually mad at him, she's mad at the gods and taking her anger out on Percy.

While boys and girls can obviously be friends, and it's always great when they are, it's pretty standard (especially in America) for school-aged kids to mostly have friends of the same gender. Almost ALL of Percy's friends are girls. Annabeth, Rachel, Thalia, Clarisse, Selina, Zoë---the only male friends are either from the crew of the Argo II (which means Percy didn't really pick them naturally), Grover (who also mostly has girl friends and comes off like the group's brother. We had one of those in my high school friend group which was otherwise all girls), Luke (who was actively seeking Percy out for villain reasons and then they became arch nemeses) and Nico (who again, Percy didn't really pick, circumstances kind of forced them together, and they also had a VERY contentious relationship for a while).

Percy is fairly routinely noted as "not like other male demigods" when dealing with nymphs and other mythological creatures who have been hurt by the likes of Hercules or Achilles. While this is partially just because standards for masculinity and what a hero are have drastically changed, it's notable that people like Leo, Frank, and Jason DON'T get that comparison, despite also being very kind and heroic.

Speaking of Frank, he and Percy are narrative foils in a lot of ways---Frank's strait-laced Roman to Percy's loose-canon Greek, Percy's longtime relationship with Annabeth to Frank's new relationship with Hazel, Percy's veteran demigod to Frank's inexperienced newbie---and one of the ways they contrast is how they deal with their masculinity. Frank is emasculated a lot and it clearly bothers him, and he gets even more masculine as the series goes on, especially with the blessing of Ares acting like a massive testosterone boost. Percy meanwhile, does get called girly and isn't considered very masculine, but it explicitly doesn't bother him and he actually seems to prefer this perception.

So yeah, those are probably my main evidences. Once you start looking at the books through that lens, it's a REALLY easy conclusion to come to. And once you roll with that, you can even start noticing other minor things like a really common wardrobe item for Percy being hoodies (and while I'm a filthy hoodie wearer and am cis, it's easy to read that as dysphoria hoodies).

As I said at the top, I think the fundamental reason I'm so in love with this headcanon is that it's just very fun.

-Imagining Annabeth and Percy reuniting in HoO and Percy is like "so I'm a girl now," and is really nervous and Annabeth just snogs the crap out of her because she is soooo into girls.

-Picturing Jason, who was all prepared to do the "dumb boys being dumb boys" standoff they had in Mark of Athena, and then kind of not being sure how to handle it when he's met with a girl and not a guy. . .and then having the standoff anyway because that's just how Percy rolls. . .and then having the sickest boy-girl bromance ever.

-If the egg cracked earlier than the HoO amnesia, thinking about Piper getting a sapphic relationship modeled by Percabeth before she even MET Percy and maybe having some realizations on that front and NOT having the incredibly awkward romance with Jason (still a possible route you could take even with the later transition).

-Grover being the best supportive friend ever because of course he would be, and going with the girl squad to buy Percy a new wardrobe.

-Clarisse hearing about this and just screeching "I KNEW IT!"

-Nico, bumping into Percy in camp jupiter, now fully out of the closet as a girl, almost blowing his cover even harder, then grabbing a pillow and screaming into it because OH MY GOD THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH, but also because now he's all confused about his feelings again, and also because HOW FRUSTRATING is it that he was afraid to tell Percy that he was queer, and the moment he realizes she's a safe person to talk to, he CAN'T because they're not supposed to know each other!

- Hazel just having a "she's a little confused but she's got the spirit!" attitude because she wasn't really aware being trans was a thing, but far be it from her to gatekeep (and she also has some mythological precedents for gender weirdness to work with).

Like, that's just the tip of the iceberg! There's so many things you can do!

3. The story is about a young man, called Thomas, around the age of 20 (maybe) that got sent in a maze that has a circular shape. In the middle there is a green land called "The Glade" where Thomas was sent somewhere from below the maze, with an elevator.

4. There, he get's thrown out by a guy named Gally and soon befriends Alby, Newt, Minho, Frypan and Chuck.

5. I suggest you watch all the three parts to understand what i'm about to ramble about. Trust me. You won't regret it. It has everything in it. Horror, action, romance, angst, e v e r y t h i n g .

This random idea came to me once i decided to watch the movie once again.

In the first movie we see Luz getting dragged out of the elevator.. Cage.. Whatever you like to call it, by Boscha. Now, Boscha is really strong and tall in this AU, just like Gally.

Luz is immune to The Flare disease, like Thomas, and dosen't really get affected when she gets attacked by Matt.

King isn't actually his name. It's a nickname that he gave himself. He never really remembered his name so everyone went along with it. At the part where King showed Luz the toy he explained that it was given by his adoptive mother, which is Eda. She and Lilith are still, well, were still sisters in this AU. King is still very demanding and instead of calling himself the "King Of Demons" he say's that he's the "King Of Grievers".

Luz and Teresa don't actually share any romantic feelings towards each other in this AU but they do get along pretty well at first.

When The Right Arm finds them and Amity passes out Luz is actually glad to donate blood to her.

Before y’all accuse me of coming back here just to scream about Pearl Jam again I am NOT doing that...or at least, um, I’m trying not to.

But I just had a thought and I want to put it out there.

One of the reasons that Mike is my favorite bandmember of PJ is that he’s the fucking lead guitarist (arguably considered one of the “manliest” positions one can take on in a rock band, especially) but that he constantly does shit that essentially says “FUCK YOUR GENDER ROLES, I DO WHAT I WANT. AND SO SHOULD EVERYONE ELSE.” The main thing that made me think about this is that he’s played, like, piano and keyboard for people in the studio, and even live with Infinite Color & Sound. I mean, it doesn’t seem like a big deal to ME because my favorite bandmember of my favorite band IS the pianist/keyboardist/organist (throwback to the time Benmont played with PJ live nghjbfhjbghdjbfr R.I.P. MY ACTUAL SOUL AND ALSO MY EYES BECAUSE TOO MANY TEARS). LOL But Mike’s not traditionally a pianist/keyboardist and in fact his traditional role claims some of the worst (in consideration of toxic masculinity/misogyny) personas of musicians in history. So the fact that he’s like ‘fuck yeah I’ll play piano or mellotron on your song/album’ is like...IDK TO ME IT’S KIND OF RADICAL AND I APPRECIATE THAT.

And in the same vein, you know, Carrie Brownstein has done a similar thing with Sleater-Kinney now and it also makes me cry (I love her). (I still haven’t written officially about the S-K show I went to but the deviation from guitar goddess for the majority of the show to emotional af keyboardist for the encore was like. Oh god it was so much and I was not expecting it to be so emotional but it fucking was and just, oh my god. R.I.P. me. I legit almost started to cry during that song “Broken” anyway, so like, I’m not exaggerating. Also I cried through the entirety of “Reach Out” but that was for a different reason. LOL)

So like, actually, this is not just a call-out post for Mike but also Carrie and anyone who shirks traditional gender roles and general expectations of them. Personally, I think the latter is brave and the former is badass as fuck and we should all be doing those things. LOL

Anyway I’m just. Still filled with love for these adorable people.

Insider is creating a database to track queer representation in children's cartoons. I searched through it a bit and it's pretty cool. I wished it had some links to sources of confirmation to some of them and I'm not sure exactly how accurate it is, but it seems accurate enough at first glance. It's January 6th. On this day in 1412 in Domrémy, Duchy of Bar, Kingdom of 🇫🇷 France, was born a girl named Jehanne. She grew up not knowing her last name, so she called herself Jehanne la Pucelle, which translates into English as Joan the Maid. Of course, history knows her as Joan of Arc, one of France's most prominent and legendary heroines.

During her short 19 years on this planet, Joan played a key role in helping 🇫🇷 France defeat her 🇬🇧English oppressors in the Hundred Years’ War. Joan's accomplishments are all the more remarkable for a number of reasons. She was illiterate. The only thing she could read or write was her name – "Jehanne." She was a teenager, and a woman, at that, in a fiercely patriarchal society. She wore men's clothes and cropped her hair short to hide her gender, but that ruse was eventually discovered, leading to tragic consequences.

Joan is famous for her warfare contributions, but she actually had no battle experience as a child. She still somehow managed to outline ingenious strategies and then confidently and enthusiastically lead the jaded and dejected troops into ⚔️ battle after battle, until they turned the direction of the war around in France's favor and ultimately achieved final victory.

Joan of Arc changed the course of French history by expelling the English from France and installing 👑 Charles as the kingdom's rightful ruler. What did she get for her troubles? When it was discovered that she was a woman, it was assumed that she must be a witch and was burned at the stake! Hindsight is 20/20. The same King Charles that Joan helped install on the throne and allowed her to be burned at the stake cleared her name 20 years later. I have chosen a very meaningful quote from a man who was once with us named Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers where he helped lead the Lakers to five championships. The quote states, “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do” (Bryant). For those who knew Kobe Bryant, knew that he was more than basketball, he represented ambition, perseverance and love. In Bryant’s eyes, great things come from hard work. Everything was achievable no matter the gender or race. Millions of people who came from different races, gender, age and ethnicity wanted to be like Kobe because of the way he pursued life and how he brought diversity together. I think this famous quote ties in our class lectures from Chapter 1 regarding pluralist dimension. Pluralists advocate for diversity that lies around them that enables the ability to see many different perspectives like Martin Luther King Jr did. As we all know that it is very unfortunate that Kobe’s daughter also died in the helicopter crash. Kobe’s daughter, Gigi Bryant believed that she could accomplish just as much as a boy could in basketball. Kobe was also a strong supporter of the WNBA. He illustrates that women are just as hardworking. In a way, Kobe was proving that “not one group should hold all the power, but to be dispersed among the variety of ideological groups” (Chp 1).  Kobe had four daughters, leading many people to ask him how he felt not having a boy. Most NBA players dream is to have a boy to carry on their legacy in the NBA. Kobe responded “great, If I could have 4 more girls I would love too, girls are awesome, i’m a girls dad”. This shows how much Kobe believed in what diversity can do to our society and the way it can benefit the world. Not just in basketball but anything in life. Kobe makes the statement that not having boys is just as equal as having only daughters. Kobe impacted so many people’s lives through his persona and his book called mamba mentality. He demonstrated us a strong work ethic and the desire to achieve your dreams if you put in the hard work. We saw all over social media that people everywhere in the world were devastated when they heard the news that a wonderful legend Kobe Bryant has died. Everyone around the world paid their respects to Kobe and his daughter Gigi Bryant. This was seen at the Staples Center and in a mural located on Hill Street in Los Angeles. Writing about this topic impacts me emotionally. A legend and a daughter gone too soon. I feel like I lost a role model and hero. I can only imagine the pain his wife and his other daughters are going through. Kobe was someone who inspired me when I was playing basketball in elementary up to high school. He has taught me to never give up and continue to persevere when things get hard and come back pushing yourself harder. He also enlightened me to constantly try to be the best version of myself. He does not represent LA, he is LA. Kobe Bryant is a true legend, a true hero.
