THE STORY :

The Petrescu and Vasilescu families had been comrades-in-arms for generations leading up to the Plague and the birthing of the Hollow Throne. Though no one alive could remember the time before, that bond and camaraderie persisted long into the world post-Plague and formed a strong brotherhood between young Costin and his mentor Darius. Costin grew up young and idealistic when it came to his perception of the Upyr people. He believed that, like himself, everyone was putting forth their best effort to ensure the Hollow Throne stood strong.

It wasn’t until Costin was told by Darius about Gabriel Albescu’s treachery involving his illegitimate claiming of the throne that he began to doubt the resolve of his fellows. He became jaded, often speaking of a possibility for a better future for his people, but found no way to change their fate until Sanctuary became a reality. Suddenly, Costin believed, they had a fighting chance at true survival, rather than huddling around the Hollow Throne like carrion beetles.

It is because of his high sense of honor that Costin could not respect Gabriel as his King. He finds himself drawn to Darius’ willingness to persevere for the good of the Upyr people regardless of how the throne was stolen from him. While not entirely obsessed with the idea of Upyr superiority, Costin recognizes the need for Sanctuary as a device to help his species further their reach into the world and continuation into history. He considers himself a champion for the Upyr people while still being open to new ideas in order to make their lives easier and their survival in the changing world possible.

As Sanctuary recovers from the storm and the Upyr people recover from the attack upon them, Costin is unsure of how to feel about the change in Upyr monarchy. While he is glad that Darius’ usurper no longer holds the crown, he fears Queen Milena might be a far more formidable foe to deal with.

Almost a millenia ago, he awoke.  All he remembers is waking up in pain, such an unbearable pain that he was convinced he had awoken in the midst of dying.  Before he could truly understand what was happening, warm flesh was shoved between his teeth and he was told to bite, to drink.  He resisted, or at least he tried, but an instinct, one he had never felt previously, told him not only to comply but also made him want to drink.  So he did.  And as he would later find out, it was what completed his transition from living to...Something else.

Confused, hungry, and afraid of his own self, what else was he to do except follow the man who had eased the pain he had upon waking? Once time had passed and he had fed enough to be in his right mind, the man explained their circumstances.  His sire’s name was Barin Sokolov, a Russian expeditioner.  He had stumbled upon him dying from a bear attack, and told him that something about him had reminded him of his son, and he couldn’t let him perish, and decided to change him instead.  He had taken to calling him Mischa in reference to the beast that supposedly killed him.  He couldn’t dispute the story the man told him, having no memory of his life before waking up with that horrible pain.  Much later, though, Mischa would learn that while the story had threads of truth running throughout it, it had been made to look pretty, to be appetizable, so Mischa could stomach it.  Instead, the truth was not nearly as pretty.  Sure, he had reminded Barin of his son, a son that had died, but he himself had not been dying.  Instead, Barin with no mind for the irony of ripping a son away from a family to replace the one that had been ripped away from him, changed him without permission, without reason other than his own selfishness.  He didn’t even stop to learn his name, leaving him with the only name he’s ever known being Mischa.  And wasn’t that the cherry on top, the name wasn’t given to him to notate the way he died, by a bear, but rather it was Barin’s son’s name.  Another sick attempt to fill the role of his son that had been vacated prematurely.

But Mischa wouldn’t know that information for quite awhile, and instead found himself feeling grateful for the man, for saving him, for taking him in, for teaching him the so called ropes of existing as whatever he was now (’upyr’, Barin had told him).  Mischa fell much into the role that Barin had hoped he would, and the two acted much like father and son as they spent the years together, traveling, working together to gain territory and political credibility for the older man.  The beginning of the ending came, though, when the two realized that along with his immortality, Mischa had received another gift: psychometry.  He hadn’t realized that the flashes of visions he’d get when holding certain objects had meant anything.  He hadn’t been sure what they had been, but his life was filled with mysteries, and he just assumed this, along with his past, was one of them.  It wasn’t, and Barin quickly began to make use of the power in whichever ways he could.  

Perhaps, if he had simply acknowledged the gift as another aspect of Mischa’s life instead of trying to use it to move his own life forward, their father-son facade could have survived.  But instead, through a series of events while sorting through Barin’s belongings in an attempt to find an item that could help them out of their current bind, Mischa had stumbled upon a beaded bracelet, one unlike anything he had ever seen before, and differed greatly from Barin’s personal style.  Curious, Mischa picked it up.  Sometimes, he wonders what would have happened if he hadn’t.

He saw flashes of what he assumes was his life before, made blurry by his own lack of context.  But more importantly he saw visions of his own death move past his mind’s eye.  There was no bear.  But instead, a bear of a man, coming at him with an intensity that when thinking of it, still makes Mischa shiver.  It had been Barin.  The man had lied to him all this time.

The two parted shortly after, and fortunately Barin had enough feeling for Mischa that he didn’t force him to stay, even though he could have with his sire bond.  Every once in awhile, Mischa will feel him calling, but he’s learned that if he can make it through a round while resisting the call, he’ll generally stop.  He’s unsure but Mischa thinks it’s just Barin doing it to remind him that he’s still out there, that no matter his hate for the man, they’re still bonded.  

Since they parted, Mischa made it his mission to not only learn about his forgotten human life, but the world that was constantly and rapidly changing around him while stuck amongst the old guard of Barin’s world.  At almost 900 years old, Mischa has lived through revolutions, civil wars, endless historical events, the wars between the species and even the creation of Lume Noua.  He holds crystal clear memories of all of them.  But yet, he still has none from his own life.  

The place he called home for the first three or so decades of his life no longer exists, and only in the dark depths of dreams can he remember flashes of it.  From his research, the somewhat unreliable information from his sire and his own sparse memories he knows the following:  He lived sometime in the early to mid 18th century, in what one day would come to be known as Alaska.  He was turned in the 1740s by Barin Sokolov.  Those are the only hard facts he has.  Everything else is conjecture, possibilities that he most likely will never be able to confirm.  

His working in museums had been borne from an almost desperate need to get his hands on objects to see their past, in hopes of one day finding something that can connect him to his own, but had eventually evolved into a genuine love for trying to find out the past of every object so it could be fully appreciated, or when needed, returned to it’s people.

Throughout all his time alive (well, sort of anyways), Mischa had never been interested in the politics and power struggles of the world around him despite the power his age could give him, and even to this day, it stands true.  He holds no alliances or hopes for the current throes of instability Lume Noa is experiencing, and simply hopes that it can end before it really starts, tired of seeing the same mistakes being made over and over again.

The King fell ill and welcomed death while Darius was on a hunt, and rather than being welcomed back as the next in line, he witnessed his cousin Gabriel take the crown that was rightfully his. The younger Upyr was caught in the middle of a silent civil war; those who supported his unsung claim to the throne were dealt with swiftly, all without Gabriel batting an eye. Some would be mysteriously killed on a hunt, or simply vanish in the night and never return. To save his own skin, Darius publicly denounced any claim he might have had and pledged his full support to the current King. Out of feigned kindness, Darius was granted a seat on Gabriel’s inner council, for despite their feud he was still an Upyr the people looked up to. It was only natural for him to offer to accompany his King to Sanctuary.

He keeps his cards close to his chest, and not even his fellow Upyr know his motivations at any given time. Though Darius pledges his loyalty to the Bone Queen he has never forgotten how power was stolen from him in the dead of night and intends to make right of it no matter the cost. Though she came from a modestly well-connected family, Lilita was an only child and, when her family passed, the only inheritor of her name. She was taken in by Milena Ivanov and given an apprenticeship at her side. Since that day, Lilita’s only purpose in life has been to serve the Hollow Throne as a spymaster. Quiet and nimble, she was able to listen in even the loudest parties and commit every word to memory. At such a young age, she had been the downfall of several families intent on overthrowing the Bone King’s rule.

Lilita was not bound by loyalty to the Crown, however, and instead simply found an enjoyment in gathering the secrets of others to use for her own personal gain. From a shy young woman into a powerful player within the Court seemingly overnight, the sole Strazds became the keeper of secrets and one of the most dangerous members of the King’s inner circle.

Officially, Lilita’s job within Sanctuary is to listen well and report everything she hears back to her Queen. She has, however, become accustomed to her power and the ability to play others. She uses her calm demeanor to her advantage to lull her victims into a false sense of security. The only ones she truly fears are the Wickeds, who seem to be able to see through her careful fabrication of lies. She toes the line and only crosses it when no one is looking. Whether or not she cares about the fate of her people or that of Sanctuary is a secret she will never tell.

Milena Ivanov (taken) : Lilita has deep respect for Milena. The new Bone Queen would be the last person that the younger upyress would think of crossing in her quest for more power. Whatever she is today is courtesy Milena, and though she doesn’t see the Queen as a mother-figure anymore, she still acknowledges her as a mentor, giving her the same amount of respect and obedience. However, while staying in Milena’s good books, Lilita is striving to come out of the Queen’s large shadow. She is a little resentful that Milena didn’t bequeath her former title of Duchess of Ash to her, and instead gave it to Gabriel.

Heather the Kind (open) : She likes to toy with the young wicked. So impressionable, so naive, Heather is Lilita’s amusement in Sanctuary. She is still deciding whether she wants to mentor the young wicked or torment her.

Venera grew up in the lowest caste of the Upyr Court; her life was to be dedicated to respecting her elders and her betters, while providing food for all. Rapidly disillusioned with her life on the bottom rung, she lashed out at the system that kept her from achieving her true potential. Venera was young when she was jailed for insubordination and sentenced to trial in front of the Bone King himself, and it was in front of Gabriel that Venera made her plea; she wished for the opportunity to prove her power and strength to the entire Court for a chance at his Inner Circle. Gabriel, amused by her youthful candor, agreed to her bargain and set about an impossible task: she was to kill the Blood King Arcturus in single combat.

The upyress knew that it was a goal designed to ensure her death and, by association, stamp out any who believed that they could demand to be treated with respect. It was through cunning and sheer force of will that Venera was able to entrap and kill the old Vampire Arcturus, and her return with his head was heralded as a change for the caste system Gabriel had tried to enforce. Unable to go back on his word, Gabriel gave Venera the position of General and a seat at his table. She was one of the first who volunteered to join him in Sanctuary, refusing to be left behind for lesser men.

Venera’s very existence within the inner circle of the Court is an anomaly. Her family name holds no weight and many claim that no one before her held it, making her equitable to a nobody. But she has proven to be one of the first to get by solely on her own merits, however deplorable her actions and methods may be. Her loyalties are sent through mixed signals and she will play any side she must in order to get ahead.

Costin grew up young and idealistic when it came to his perception of the Upyr people. He believed that, like himself, everyone was putting forth their best effort to ensure the Hollow Throne stood strong. 

It wasn’t until Costin was told by Darius about Gabriel Albescu’s treachery involving his illegitimate claiming of the throne that he began to doubt the resolve of his fellows. He became jaded, often speaking of a possibility for a better future for his people, but found no way to change their fate until Sanctuary became a reality. Suddenly, Costin believed, they had a fighting chance at true survival, rather than huddling around the Hollow Throne like carrion beetles.

It is because of his high sense of honor that Costin cannot respect Gabriel as his King. The only of his line of Upyr, Gabriel Albescu ascended to the Hollow Throne in 2232 after the untimely death of the previous King. As the youngest man to hold the title, Gabriel was obsessed with making his mark on the world. He closed the gates of the Court, restricting all travel to the outside world to the lower caste of hunters; gave more freedoms to those within his inner circle; and granted a Wicked a seat at the side of his Throne, a previously unheard of gesture.

While he sat on a sturdy throne and assured his subjects that their way of superior life was secure, the world seemed intent to crumble around him and prove him wrong. Human tribes ventured into Upyr territory less and less, and his people that had been starving for half a century were growing restless. Gabriel refused to be the last Bone King–the reason his people died out. When he was approached by Keeper Ayanna Cadeyrn about the possibility of uniting three fronts against the inevitable extinction of all, he laughed in her face and cast her out. It was not until his Wicked, Elise, came to him bearing a prophecy of Upyr destruction that he began to consider the Humans’ offer. With great reluctance, the Upyr community joined Sanctuary.

Gabriel has traveled with his entourage to live in Sanctuary for the foreseeable future. Ayanna’s rules regarding how the Upyr are supposed to live stirs dissent among his people, but Gabriel’s faith in Elise’s vision overpowers any objections he may have. Already he has lowered himself to allowing his people to mix with their food; the thought of watching them all die around him would be an insult to his pride he could not bear. He serves as a part of the Tribunal, forced to work alongside Ayanna and the Blood King in order to find a relatively peaceful means of coexistence for their peoples that eliminates any future worry of extinction. Should the idea of Sanctuary succeed, Gabriel would rather be on the inside rather than shut out from the rest of the world. He keeps Elise close to his side, heeding her whispers of the future and the disasters to come.
