okay so for the ts lyrics connections: cruel summer, willow, don’t blame me and cardigan (for jyn or cassian or rebelcaptain djsksk)

okay good choices ofc BTW I'm saving the most unhinged for last

willow - cassian's ship rolled into jyn's rough waters, and he cut through her surface like a knife. wherever she strays he follows, and they both certainly wrecked each other's plans. his train could take her home. I mean there's even a bait and switch that's a work of art (his betrayal on eadu; him believing her and raising an army for scarif). they even hold hands at the end in the rogue one cinematic universe tradition of hand-holding being how lovers communicate their love. willow is of course their song.

don't blame me - lol this is all cassian's feelings in the novelization tbh. like neither pity nor pragmatism could explain why she dominated his thoughts, and tbh I love the line I once was poison ivy but now I'm your daisy to describe how he's hurt so many (intentionally and unintentionally) and how with jyn he finally can do the best things he's ever done and be at peace (by standing up to go to scarif but also on a personal level, by being able to come back to someone he cares for and who needs him).

cardigan - this song always, always gives me jyn erso vibes. everyone assumes the worst of her (except cassian - mostly - and rogue one), assumes she knows nothing, has no politics. I'm sure she has felt like an old cardigan under someone's bed many times - always put second to the cause by her guardians. she assumes cassian will be like everyone else - leaving like a father (when she thinks he is killed by krennic like nearly everyone else she's loved) and running like water (ugh also cassian is a water sign, so much water symbolism with him) and he drew stars around her scars (started to help her heal from her traumas by showing up for her and earning her trust on jedha) so the betrayal on eadu has her bleeding. and she curses him for maybe not the longest time buttt

and then cassian tries to change the ending, saves her from feeling like that thrown away old cardigan under the rebellion's bed by standing in front of her and keeps coming back to her over and over again

and tbh lol they both haunt all MY what ifs.

cruel summer - this song is very much giving me like post-scarif yavin days clandestine hook ups where they both know they're just so for each other but it's like what are they even doing ~in these trying times? is it just the residual closeness of the mission, a la what doesn't kill me makes me want you more? they probably fall into bed amongst the celebrations after the battle of yavin, and they want to keep it to themselves but like are definitely not doing a good job of it

and ofc they're both not like great at this stuff in general so they're both waiting for the other to ~~~~cut to the bone, and I'm sure they both have their drunk crying moments, I DONT WANT TO KEEP SECRETS JUST TO KEEP YOU, I assume bodhi and bix and leia and melshi and kay and baze and tonc and sefla and brasso and han and vel are all V E R Y tired of the nonsense (chirrut has endless patience for them, cinta is too focused to be bothered)

and you know one of them finally screams it and the other looks up grinning like a devil and it's all good

of course that's the everybody lives au version. the film canon connections are still there, like they don't have the chance to try it because of these trying times, they're waiting for the other to cut to the bone until of course they realize they trust each other (especially jyn, which is part of why she reacts so strongly to cassian's betrayal on eadu), it is a cruel summer because they die on a fucking tropical beach watching the sunset

If we're going to retcon Cassian's line from R1 "I've been in this fight since I was 6 yrs old,"  to mean that he was always resisting the Empire from the time his parents were killed then wouldn't Jyn have been in the fight just as long?

Because by that definition, Jyn was in the fight from the time she was 8 yrs old, when her mother was killed, her father left to work for the Empire, and Jyn literally became a child soldier in Gerrara's cell.  When Cassian was being cared for by Clem and Maarva, Jyn was an actual child soldier, actually in the fight as part of the resistance to the Empire.  

She didn't abandon the fight either.  Saw abandoned her.  So she spent the next few years getting by but engaging in anti-imperial activities; like Cassian was doing when Luthen found him. She found and lost family, just like Cassian did. When the Rebellion found Jyn, she wasn't living a life of privilege, ignoring the harshness of the Empire in Niamos (like Cassian did after Aldhani).  She was in jail for forging Imperial documents and assaulting imperial personnel while resisting arrest. 

How is that not being in the fight, if we use the retconned definition of "in the fight"?

When she tells Saw you can ignore imperial flags "if you don't look up," she is clearly speaking from a place of anger at him and is trying to hurt him.  She doesn’t want him to know that what he taught her; the way he raised her, continues to inform her behaviour but it does.  Her actions up to that point show that, as much as she hates the Rebellion (for which she has cause to remember) she hates the Empire more; just like Cassian when Luthen found him.  Before the scene with Saw, she intervenes in a firefight to save a child; a child that Cassian would have left to die.  That's who Jyn Erso is before she sees Galen's message.  So when she sees her father is alive and hasn't forgotten her, it's not much of a change for her to be committed to getting him from Eadu and smashing the Empire. 

Why don't we acknowledge that at the moment that he’s declaring “suddenly the Rebellion is real for you”, Cassian is trying to defend unethical actions by the Rebellion and himself? He starts by gas-lighting her (”You’re in shock. I’ve seen it before.”) and then insisting she respect his position as a Rebel like she hasn't been a rebel since she was 8 yrs old at least. The rebellion (lower case “r”) has been as real for Jyn as it has been for Cassian since she was 8 yrs old.

I think people are uncomfortable with Jyn because she's a complex female character and, even in the 3rd decade of the 21st century, we like our women likeable rather than complex.  Also, she’s angry and unapologetic about it.  She's angry at her parents for leaving her.  She's angry at Saw for the same reason.  And, in case anyone has forgotten, she's angry at Cassian because in the scene prior to Cassian declaring, somewhat dubiously it appears, that he's "been in this fight since [he] as 6 yrs old," he lied to her and almost killed her father. Also, he's a stand in for the Rebellion, who actually did just kill her father 

I agree with the video that the filmmakers treated Jyn's character poorly. I guess that's why we got Andor and not Erso as the prequel series, even though it appears they had very similar arcs.  It's just more interesting when a man does it, I guess

Since Andor is one of my favourite things of 2022 (really the first SW movie/show that doesn't feel like a Funko Pop in video format in ages), I’m revisiting more non-Skywalker Star Wars. God I had forgotten that the Rogue One novelisation was not only a great novelisation but also a good novel! The film’s third act is really good but the book feels much more cohesive as a whole. Alexander Freed just knows how to hurt me and it feels so good.

I’m revisiting R-1, Catalyst and Rebel Rising… I’m having a brilliant time with all of them (my heart is broken, I love Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor and I’ll never be happy again).

“If you trust him I guess I do too,” Cassian said through his teeth, molars clenched.

Undercover missions should be planned. Of course nothing ever goes to plan but that’s not the point. The point is knowing things. The layouts of everything. What your target likes to drink, what their wife does when he’s not there.

If you’re meeting in a bar like they are this time, you know who owns it and who frequents, what kind of liquor they sell under the table, and exactly what you need to do to make it seem like you’ve been drinking there all your adult life.

But of course, they knew none of these things.

Jyn had been partnered with Solo a few months ago. It surprised Cassian so much, how angry it made him that she was leaving. Her first day gone, he needed to spar to blow off steam; he helped Chirrut and Baze with a basics of defense class for new recruits, and ended up scaring the shit out of them.

And hurting his back for about two days.

“I want you to help me teach next generation of intelligence offers Andor,” Draven had said when he visited him in the medbay. “Please try to keep things under control. Like you used to.”

Before Jyn Erso came around. Cassian knew how to read subtext.

“The owner’s new but the bartender’s been around,” Jyn said. She sipped inconspicuously from her drink, frozen jogan fruit that felt gritty, probably frozen too long, mixed with what definitely was sonic gin. Not the worst thing she’s ever drunk before.

Cassian nursed Corellian whiskey, straight. He drank it very slowly, unless it pickle his insides before the night is through.

“How can you tell?”

“It’s way he’s talking. He was puffed up when talking to the owner, overly friendly and laughing. That’s how he with strangers. He puts on the bravado.”

“And with the bartender?”

“He spoke softer. I think he asked about the guy’s family, how his mom was. He more like a normal human,” Jyn answered. Han caught her eye from his barstool and she nodded.

“I think things are okay. It looks…settled for now. Just need to wait for our contact.” Jyn smiled at Cassian, her eyes brighter, more playful. “Don’t worry Captain. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

He was still pissed, at this war, at his back, at his rival that wasn’t even. But she made him smile.

“I’m sure you won’t.”
