inspired by a post by @/serpentface of a concept that captivated me, i'm going to present the much anticipated, much requested, "what cars my characters would drive, bearing in mind their economic status and assuming the year is 2024" post
we can start reallyyyy easy because for Bowman there's no other option:
An ep3 Honda Civic. Is it a type-R? nope but it's got vtec bro!!!! it's surprisingly practical and the wheels are kerbed to shit. there's fluffy dice. there's an aftermarket spoiler on the back and a halfords special front splitter. He's of the opinion that girls don't know the difference between a hot hatch and a grandma's car so this works as well as the expensive one. i think his driving style is best described as 'life changing'. for better or worse.
Senca:
unflinchingly practical. the car that can do it all. a 2010 1.6 TDI Skoda Octavia with roof rails. it's not about speed or looks and it's not even about transport, really, it's about looking superior because nobody else's car can fit the contents of an entire house inside. and then looking less smug when someone pulls up in a Volvo V50. the type of driver who can't fucking stand it when other people break the rules of the road but when she does it, it's fine. because she's a "good" driver.
Léa:
2004 Hyundai Coupe 2L. Yes bitch it looks fast!!!! IS it fast? No, but the better coupes from the same era did not depreciate so much in value and aren't affordable. in Léa's hands it's like a rocket ship. The indicators must be broken though because nobody has ever seen them in use. She spray-painted the wheels herself.
Islin:
a step-through road bike WITH panniers. cars damage the environment and the thought of contributing to that is unconscionable. doesn't wear a helmet anyway. dichotomy of ocd
Helena:
Porche Cayenne. Mostly someone else would drive her around but every so often she wants to get behind the wheel and start tailgating aggressively, just for the thrill of it. She replaced the stock lights with retina blaster 9000s and is always about 1 inch behind your back bumper, full beam on. Red lights are for other people. She ran over a child once because she wasn't looking and blamed the parents.
Jean-Baptiste:
Caterham 7. The one made up to look much older than it is, and he ordered it in kit car form and built it in his garage. I've always insisted that Jean would be massively into motor sport if he happened to have been born when that was a thing. He didn't follow the manufacturer's instructions because he felt that he knew best so his car is very unsafe but makes far more power than stock. It's not road legal but you will find it on the road nonetheless.
Erica:
Oh? You've never heard of it? You've never seen a man look so smug in your life. He shuts the silent-close door and explains that he traded in his Tesla model 3 for a BYD Seal because Tesla was becoming "too mainstream" and there were too many of them on the road.
Félix:
1998 Mercedes Benz E Class. Yeah it cost him £700 on Autotrader, but what's important is that it cost £60,000 when new. This is a good car. This is a luxurious car. It has heated seats - they don't work, but if he wanted to fix them he could. It has an overflowing ashtray from the previous owner and there's not a single thing that goes right on it but it makes him look adjacently wealthy, and isn't that the point? The poppy helps him look more sympathetic to elderly people (scam victims). Number One Most Likely To Attempt Murder-Suicide By Automobile. You've never seen a man look so divorced.
Carmen:
For her i just sorted price low -> high and picked the cheapest running car. And it's a Fiat Bravo! Notorious for earning a zero star euro ncap safety score and exploding into scrap if it hits a kerb. Carmen can't rely on her parents buying her a first car or paying insurance so she has no choice but to scrape the bottom of the barrel. She thinks it looks nice though.
Pascal:
was there any doubt.
Nico:
Beat up 1999 Discovery permanently attached to a horsebox. It is always filthy and somehow filled with straw and dog hair even though he doesn't own a dog, that's just what seems to happen to these cars. The heating doesn't work anymore but other than that it's fine, does the job. Drives with what can only be described as malicious compliance to all rules of the road.
Cain:
a Lada Niva. Why the hell would you ever need more than this. Electronics? No thanks. You're lucky it has gears. Cars peaked in the 1970s and anything built after that is just a piece of ridiculous frivolity, a toy for children. Here is a real workhorse. It costs 20 grand. Probably the only truly good driver here.
---
Sir Heaven:
Please for the love of god stop making him drive the Revuelto he doesn't want to do it anymore it's too scary
Sir Victory:
2003 Seat Leon Cupra R, with decals that make it seem very impressive and like it might actually be a racecar, but it isn't. It's made of rust and the engine sounds sick. It's battered and broken and the subframe is bent from a side-on collision. One day it might crumble away entirely but until then Sir Victory will drive it like he's at Goodwood. A very aggressive driver, mostly due to impatience, and he always wins the red light drag race.
Mercury:
It's a normal Ford Crown Victoria with a tank engine strapped to it. What? His holy calling is building and designing engines, of course this is safe and sane. Kind of a lackadaisical driver, obeys the rules when the mood strikes.
---
And just for fun, random other characters:
Qedivar:
1999 Audi A4. I just tried to imagine the most boring history professor tier car I could think of. It's in good condition for its age but it's never brought anyone a single scrap of joy in its entire life. Nobody smiles seeing this car and to this day Qedivar often fails to pick it out in a car park.
Huarvaa:
The legendary Renault Scenic RX4. It's big, it's 4-wheel drive, and it's a practical MPV. and it looks like it's constantly dipped in some kind of algae or perhaps sludge. Modified with a snorkel so it can drive through deep water. Still really rusty despite the plastic cladding.
Holly:
Rover Metro. It's incredibly spacious!!! Wow! He can't see over the wheel.
Finbarr Ó Casaide:
A Lupo. Literally the perfect car for his needs and he knows he must be conservative in how he goes about things. Yellow colour for the Ó Casaide clan, to show that he really does belong there, promise. A devastatingly precise driver; guns for the tiniest gaps and somehow makes it every single time, without putting others at risk or being particularly reckless. He will get you to your destination 20% faster than anyone else.
Olivier Tanet:
Ford F150, specifically an imported one from the US, specifically driven in a normal-sized place that is not built for stupid american cars (as in the photo). It is gigantic and it's in your rear view mirror 24/7. Helena might be a maliciously careless driver, but Olivier is just malicious. He wants you dead. His truck is part of an elaborate dick measuring contest that he intends to win. Plus side is that it's not a pavement princess, it goes offroad (it does doughnuts in your front garden)
#hi. this took me an hour and i only stopped when the post editor started chugging#i'm missing so many characters alas#rip jean baptiste you would have loved f1

Tips for Choosing the Right Type of Windows for Your Home
While taking a gander at glass decisions, pivot around the window's scrambling toward the sun. For example, pick better glass for the windows that don't get a ton of sun straightforwardness.
Assuming that you live in a new climate, consider triple-sheet windows as they are fixed with a blend of gases that set argon or krypton.
As you search for windows, look at the R-likely gains of the ones available. This shows the energy efficiency of the advancement materials in affirmation and windows.
So the higher the R-regard, the better the affirmation properties. To put things in setting, a single sheet window has a R-worth of 1 in any case a twofold plane window can rank as high as 4.0.
Furthermore, check the U-factor as it is the speed of which the window conducts non-sun based hotness stream. So in the event that the U-factor is low, the glass will be more energy supportive.
Going prior to buying a triple-sheet window, check with the creator's evaluations and focus on test results that apply to where you live.
For example, assuming your house is familiar with high breezes and cold temperatures, consider the best-assessed windows in the low-temperature wind snag depiction.
Updates can fundamentally explode the cost of a window. On the off chance that you live in a moderate climate, do whatever it may take not to go overboard on a triple-covered window yet get a low-e covering to develop capability besides.
Before you make the purchase, attempt to check out at the thickness of the divider in reality. To do this, development the assist with pointing width on a consistent window.
Precisely when you have the figures, various makers idea to re-endeavor the bundling supports to work with anything that divider improvement you have. Check out hung window.
Note that two or three stunning quality windows should be changed a piece of a month a ton early so don't zero in on transport date. Moreover, don't dispose of your windows before they've appeared as you would stay close by an enormous opening on your home.
Unequivocally when the windows appear, totally research them for any mischief and to ensure they're the right fit.
Windows are major in permitting in standard light, keeping out the parts, and arranging your home's lovely. Subsequently, buying new windows is an immense purchase so it's essential you're prepared. Look at the changed sort of windows, materials, kinds of glass, and your continuous circumstance going prior to buying.

In the post-war era, innovative builders like William Levitt slashed production costs and increased production rates by applying assembly line-like practices to the construction of massive new suburban subdivisions. This was the future of homebuilding.
Soon enough, however, the growth machine came to a crashing halt. Brian Potter charts this history at his Construction Physics Substack. Market conditions eventually led to a bust in mass-produced housing. Then came the rise of growth controls, land use restrictions, and environmental regulation.
With zoning codes limiting how much new housing can be built at one time, the size of home-building firms has fallen, reducing economies of scale and construction productivity. Building codes dictating how homes have to be built has further helped to close off innovative construction methods.
Those regulatory restrictions on new supply never went away, with the result being that the price of housing has risen in tandem with rising demand. Additionally, new technology that promised to automate construction tasks has repeatedly failed to take off.
Rather than becoming a commodity, home-building has stayed a cottage industry (no pun intended). Real prices continue to rise and housing affordability has become an issue of national concern debated by candidates for federal office.
In this context, Walz and Vance have decided to double down on the zero-sum nature of the housing market. They say we need to decommodify housing by preventing the wrong people from buying a fixed stock of housing.
This is exactly backwards. Housing supply is fixed by regulation, not nature. If we stripped away regulations on homebuilding, supply would rise and prices would fall.

Spotify is raising their subscription fees again on July
Spotify is raising their subscription fees again on July They're at it again. Starting on next month, Spotify Premium will be $11.99, family plans will be $19.99, and duo will be $16.99 in the US. The fact that this comes just days after their CEO (Daniel Ek) belittled artists by saying the "cost of creating content is close to zero" irks me. Plus their service has honestly gone worse. They used to be great at music discovery but they're now recommending the same songs from the same artists over and over again. Their UI is now too cluttered because they want to do too much. And their artist royalty payments are still one of the lowest. Unsubscribing now... Submitted June 19, 2024 at 10:33PM by SageMarieLoveOF https://ift.tt/yitJKbN via /r/Music

Which Is the Most Expensive Racing Game Simulator?
Racing games are the easiest way to experience the thrills of moving a car from zero to sixty within seconds. Gamers enhance their quests with racing stimulators that can sometimes cost an arm and a leg. However, the most expensive racing game simulator is the Huayra R simulator. This state-of-the-art racing simulator is developed by a racing car developer Pagani and Racing Unleashed. The Italian automaker aims to bring virtual reality to the racing game using its racing model. Put simply, racing in a Huayra R driver's seat in any racing game. According to Franco Morsino, Vehicle Dynamics Lead at Pagani. the Huayra R simulator upsets the conventional concepts of visuality. “Our goal was to transcend the traditional boundaries of virtual driving, offering an unparalleled level of realism and immersion. This simulator is not just about the experience but also serves as a piece of art, reflecting the unique essence of Pagani’s design philosophy,”
Which Is the Most Expensive Racing Game Simulator?
Notably, the Huayra R simulator is been developed exclusively for owners of Pagini vehicles. This may have a bit to do with the price tag. While some racers are prepared to invest about $50,000 in a simulation apparatus, most would prefer to buy the car itself. yet, this is not even close to the rumored value of this luxury device. However, there are some features of the product that may help you to understand the six-figure tail value. Arte de Pista: Simulators are integrated into the Arte in Pista program, offering drivers a safe environment in which to familiarize themselves with their vehicles and circuits around the world Personalized Tutors: Under the guidance of professional coaches and technical support staff, Pagani owners can explore the limits of their vehicles on FIA tracks. The Real Deal: It uses the same carbon fiber as Pagani hypercars and incorporates the Huayra R's controls In addition, the designers of the simulator went beyond anything you have experienced before. A major focus of its development was to replicate such aspects of the car as its dynamics, aerodynamics, and even its iconic sound. It is more than just design, you can actually touch and feel it. About Pagini The Argentine-Italian Horacio Pagani founded Pagani Automobili S.p.A. in 1992. The company is based in San Cesario sul Panaro, near Modena, Italy, and specifically produces hypercars with carbon fiber components. Read the full article

Met Diverse Needs & Improved End Customer Experience—TOPSFLO Pump | the Pioneer of Intelligent Speed Regulation Technology
With the progress of the times and the development of science and technology, people's demand for smart products is getting higher and higher. This need extends to the pump industry as well. For example, professional fields such as medical treatment, automobiles, laboratories, and water treatment have high requirements for the volume, noise, and power consumption of water pumps. At the same time, the market demand for customized speed is also increasingly strong.
The customized speed regulation function of TOPSFLO DC brushless centrifugal pump (hereinafter referred to as "centrifugal pump") has been widely used in fields that require high speed regulation. Thanks to TOPSFLO's customized speed-regulating water pump solution, infinitely smooth speed regulation can be achieved, and closed-loop control can be realized through speed feedback. Therefore, it can be easily adapted to different working conditions in different industries, thereby increasing the efficiency of the process.
Benefits of Customized Speed Control Function for Small Centrifugal Pumps
At present, there are many types of magnetic drive centrifugal pumps products on the market, many of them do not have speed regulation function, nor do they support customized speed regulation, because the speed regulation function of the pump will make the electronic solution design of the circuit board more complicated, and the requirements for stability and reliability are higher. The cost will also be higher.
TOPSFLO Micro DC Pumps has experienced electronic engineers. When designing electronic solutions, they will consider the needs of customers in different industries. Therefore, the circuit board has excellent performance in terms of stability and reliability, and has been unanimously recognized by many customers at home and abroad. The following are the three major advantages of TOPSFLO centrifugal pump customized speed regulation function:
1.Can adapt to the needs of different stages of actual working conditions
The magnetic drive centrifugal pump which customized with speed regulation function, can adjust the speed based on the actual application needs, and control and adjust the water flow, water head, and pressure of the pump to meet the actual working conditions of customers in different industries.
2. Low power consumption, high efficiency and long lifetime
The start-up function of the speed-regulated water pump is very prominent, so that the start-up current changes from zero, the maximum value does not exceed the rated current, and it is very stable without impact, and the control power is very small under the same process. Moreover, the efficient speed regulation method can control the output torque more accurately, reduce the motor loss and the heating of the electronic components, prolong the service life of the pump, and save the maintenance cost of the equipment.
3. Simple operation and convenient control
Generally, a centrifugal pump with speed regulation function has 3 wires, namely red wire, black wire and blue wire. Usually, the red wire is the positive pole of the power supply, the black wire is the negative pole of the power supply, and the blue line represents the speed adjustment line. The wiring method of the speed regulation function of the centrifugal pump is very simple, the control is convenient, and troubles caused by improper operation can be reduced.
The excellent performance of the customized speed regulation function of TOPSFLO small centrifugal pumps is due to the company's excellent R&D and design strength. Started in 2005, TOPSFLO has a group of professional structural engineers, motor engineers and electronic engineers, who can not only customize the speed regulation function, but also customize the size, structure, materials and other aspects of the pump. Over the years, TOPSFLO has cooperated with many internationally renowned companies such as Tesla, Whirlpool, Bosch, KTM, KOHLER and provided OEM supporting services, which has won unanimous praise from customers.

y maze
The y maze has been widely used in research on spatial memory and learning for several decades, starting from the 1940s. The y maze test on rodents has helped understand a wide range of neurological and psychiatric conditions in humans, including aging, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and depression. It has also been used to evaluate the effects of drugs, such as antidepressants and cognitive enhancers on spatial working memory.
The y maze consists of three arms, arranged at angles of 120 degrees each in the shape of a "Y". The y maze has a start arm, a goal arm, and a choice arm. The rodent is placed in the start arm and allowed to explore the maze for a set time.
The working of the VJ Instruments y maze is as follows. The rodent is placed in the center of the maze and is monitored by a MazeMaster video tracking application through a camera that is fixed directly above the maze. The software automatically calculates and analyzes parameters related to learning and memory, such as the time needed to reach the reward arm and the number of entries into each arm. The MazeMaster software analyzes the video and parameters like the number of entries to each arm, distance traveled, time spent in each arm, and more. The trajectory of the movement provided by MazeMaster software helps to analyze the movement of the rodent.
The VJ Instruments y maze is available in any custom color. The Y-Maze comes in as a part of the whole package that includes the licensed MazeMaster video tracking software, a camera with accessories like cables fixing, IR lights, Light fixtures, and a PC. Elevated Plus Maze (EPM)
The elevated plus maze (EPM) is a commonly used behavioral test in rodents to study anxiety-like behavior and its modulation by drugs, hormones, and genetic manipulations. The elevated plus maze consists of a central platform elevated above the floor, with two open arms and two closed arms in a 'plus' shape. The open arms have no walls and the closed arms have walls on three sides, creating a sense of confinement. The rodent is placed on the central platform and is allowed to freely explore the maze. The elevated plus maze is a relatively simple and cost-effective way to study anxiety-like behavior in rodents. It has been used in a wide range of studies on the neural and molecular mechanisms underlying anxiety. It has also been used to evaluate the efficacy of anxiolytic drugs, which are drugs that reduce anxiety.
The VJ Instruments’ Elevated plus maze is manufactured using high-end non-reflective material and is available in any custom color. The elevated plus maze comes in as a part of the whole package that includes the licensed MazeMaster video tracking software, a camera with accessories like cables fixing, IR lights, Light fixtures, and a PC. The same package can be used to perform tests on a variety of other mazes manufactured by VJ Instruments, like the Radial maze, T-Maze, Y-Maze, Morris water maze, Barnes maze, Elevated Zero Maze, Open field maze, and more.
This is how the VJ Instruments elevated plus maze functions. The rodent is placed in the center of the maze facing towards the open arm, and is allowed to freely explore the maze for 5 minutes. The rodent is observed by a camera mounted above the open field maze. The camera is connected to a PC where the MazeMaster software is installed. The time spent and frequency of entries into open and closed arms is recorded with VJ Instruments MazeMaster software by analyzing the video. Other parameters that are recorded by the software are latency to the first arm, total time spent, distance traveled in open and closed arms, total distance traveled, and more.
VJ Instruments supplies a wide range of pharmaceutical equipment, more than just mazes those study animal behaviors. VJ Instruments supplies R&D equipment, transdermal patch machines, behavior instruments, clinical instruments, and more. For example, VJ Instruments provides R&D machines like pelletizing machines, which include every pelletizing machine like spheronizers, Holt melt excluders, die roll extruders, and screw extruders.
A pelletizing machine is a type of equipment used in the pharmaceutical industry to convert powder or granular materials into small, cylindrical pellets. These pellets are typically used for the production of tablets and capsules and can also be used for other forms of drug delivery such as oral, nasal, and pulmonary delivery.
A pelletizing machine has different types, including single-screw extruders, twin-screw extruders, and rotary drum pelletizers. Each type has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of machine will depend on the specific application and the type of material being processed.

1: "Doing it yourself" isn't actually possible outside of an actual individual doing the entire thing themselves; organizations exist to aggregate individual effort and at every level will run into principal-agent problems along this axis. The idea that if you do something 'in-house' it will therefore be aligned with your goals is a polite fiction we tell ourselves, its just a different alignment problem (employees vs contractors).
From this lens is the government the ideal body to align the incentives of employees towards these goals? It certainly could be, I myself am a constant advocate for increased in-house capabilities - in particular the 'consulting' wing of public works, where the very planning itself is outsourced to consultants is, in a certain sense, outsourcing the solving of the principal-agent problem to a vendor who is subject to them? Its a bad look. But other organizational principles reign - for a military R&D project, should the government be the one salarying 100% of these employees? Do they have that level of constant work to justify building that org? Will a government department, with no options like stock shares, be able to incentivize the best talent? Are there no positive externalities to bringing in civilian expertise? Here I think you can look at other nations, which absolutely do have *more* in-house talent but almost none of whom in-house even close to the majority of work like this, and see that its never going to be a clean answer. The complexity of these projects and their co-dependencies with the private sector more or less guarantees mixed approaches.
2: Fixed-Fee Completion Contracts, which I believe this is describing, are used; but almost universally for 'small' projects and 'reliable' projects, aka ones where the vendor has done the task many times before and has a high certainty on their completion timeline. This model runs hard against the cost-of-capital issue; why would anyone loan money to a company whose current revenue is 'zero', future revenue is completely defined, but costs to get to that revenue are highly uncertain? It happens, as I said, but only as a function of that uncertainty - and large projects like government work are inherently uncertain (our contracting issues are not from our attempts to like buy concrete in bulk).
And these companies generally exist in a competitive market; if you are a construction company, you don't have to work for the government, you have other clients. If you as the government are demanding year+ timescales with no cost overrun provisions, only the most desperate of companies will go with that deal. Or you just pay them a ton more money to cover the computed interest rate on their deferred revenue & necessary loans and their uncertainty function; which eats away at the reason you want to do this.
You can start addressing these problems - okay how bout staged completion fees, riders for specific kinds of cost overruns, maybe fixed-cost-plus-fee contracts, etc etc...and then it starts looking like the status quo!
My point isn't that the status quo is good - that isn't in my opinion. Just that the solution is going to be granular, there is no one way to address the principal agent problem. Different jobs will require different incentive structures even with the same industry - designing a fighter jet will look radically different than designing a missile cruiser, and honestly the only reason those are *as similar as they are today* is overly-restrictive DoD contracting requirements.
why are cost overruns on government contracts a problem? couldn't the goverment just stipulate that the contractor has to eat them? is the problem that nobody would do the work under those conditions?

Why is it that scientist & astronomers can discover so far into the universe and find out our first supernovas but our oceans are about 80% undiscovered? We have the technology to see light years away but no technology to withstand the pressure underwater ?
1. It’s really really big. It’s 70% of the Earth’s surface, so there’s more than twice as much ocean surface as there is land. And the deepest parts of the ocean are deeper than the heights of the highest mountains. In theory, you could sink Mount Everest in the Marianas Trench and it wouldn’t break the surface. The ocean is big. Even a large ship can’t explore more than a tiny bit of the ocean at a time.
2. A lot of it is far away from the nearest land. Sending a support ship out for weeks with fuel, food, a crew who can sail it, and a support staff and shore facilities gets expensive—and that’s before the research even starts. Just as an example: to operate Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute’s research submersible Alvin, and its support ship R/V Atlantis, costs $45,000 per day.
3. We can’t breathe down there. Sending people down there requires a lot of life support gear. Alvin can dive to three miles (4500 m), but dives usually last less than ten hours, with maybe five hours of working time—it might take two hours just to get down to working depth, and two to rise to the surface again. (And there’s no room for a toilet.)
4. Did I mention it’s really really deep? This means that
a. Sending a diver down means you can’t go down very far without having to deal with fun little medical issues like nitrogen embolisms (the “bends”). There are ways to avoid that, but they get expensive.
b. Sending anything down means you have to design it so that it doesn’t get crushed like a beer can against my grandmother’s forehead. One of the fun things that people who get to dive on the Alvin do is decorate large styrofoam cups with permanent markers. The cups are kept on the outside of the Alvin as it goes down. . . when they come up, they’re hard as a rock and about the size of a shotglass. Now imagine that happening to your lungs. . .
c. Sending anything down means a non-zero chance that you’ll never see it again. Cables can snap, wires can get cut, seals can fail, and anything can go on the fritz. My major professor, who has done a lot of ocean exploration in his day, used to say that you should never let anything down into the ocean that you can’t bear to lose. He once talked about being on a ship—I’m not sure which—when a six-figure ocean probe went over the side and was never seen again. That happens.
It’s also really really cold—close to 0°C. That’s not a serious obstacle, but it does mean anything you send down there has to be engineered to function at freezing temperatures.
5. A surprisingly large part of the deep ocean floor is called the abyssal plain: it’s almost completely flat, covered in fine sediment, and, while not absolutely barren of life, not very productive. Think about this: unless you’re near a hydrothermal vent or some weird and wild energy source like that, the only source of food and energy in the deep ocean is the dead plants and animals and poop that slowly rains down from the photic zone (where there’s sunlight). That’s called “marine snow”, and it’s ultimately the only support for most deep-sea ecosystems—and there’s not enough to support a very rich and diverse ecosystem in most areas. That’s one reason why most deep-sea creatures are slow and sluggish and mostly gelatinous; there’s just not enough energy in the food web to support fast-attack predators. So much of the deep ocean isn’t a priority for exploration because it doesn’t look all that interesting. (Not that it wouldn’t be interesting, but we have to prioritize.)
6. We do explore the ocean. Universities, governments, militaries, and private foundations all maintain oceanographic research vessels, submersibles, and unmanned remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). There are also less direct ways of exploring the oceans, like sonar to map the contours of the ocean floor, remote sensing from satellites, or even attaching radiotransmitters to migrating whales, turtles, and other animals. We’ve got a good and constantly growing sense of what’s down there (although many surprises await, I’m sure). But exploring every last inch of the ocean floor would take an extremely long time, cost a huge sum of money, and wouldn’t necessarily be cost-effective.
Also, I'll leave down here a very interesting link where ocean water pressure is explained

So I’m not sure how closely people on here follow dice drama, but there has been no end of discourse over the Dispel Dice kickstarter since before it even started running. There’s a lot to it, but the one we’re gonna talk about right now is the way Dispel’s designs have turned up on Wish for purchase long before their anticipated ship date of November 2020. People have ordered them and they’ve arrived gorgeous as the pictures, but I had refrained until now for ethical reasons.
A representative from the factory just came forward on Facebook to tell their side of the story--Dispel themselves have been completely silent on the whole matter, by the way.
tl;dr: According to the representative, Dispel came to this factory asking for quality previously unknown to commercial dice-making, basically handmade-level quality. The factory put a ton of time, resources, and effort into R&D to achieve these standards, thinking it a reasonable investment as Dispel had made all sorts of claims as to the amount of product they’d be ordering, and sent a couple of orders (50 and 600 sets respectively) to Dispel. Dispel placed a further order for 2100 sets. Dispel’s owner then asked to tour their factory (a fairly common request for dice companies), but covertly took pictures of the process, and then became very hard to get ahold of. They refused the 2100 set order saying it was unauthorized, and then the factory got word that Dispel was in the process of setting up their own production, using the pictures they’d taken of their machines and process.
Notably, this means we have zero pictures of product from the actual factory that will be fulfilling the kickstarter. That bodes poorly, imo.
Realizing there would be no more orders coming from Dispel, and with COVID-19 halting all production, they decided to sell off the 2100 to recoup their costs. That said, after seeing there was demand for this kind of thing, the factory representative then said in the thread that they were looking at developing more designs and would continue to produce their own dice, which I am very excited about! If anything good came of this, it’s that a new dice company has emerged to sell extremely interesting new product 😀 They’ve been selling on Wish under the name Ice Dice (pictured above), but I don’t know if they’ll be keeping that name.
I’ve ordered the three sets, feeling much more comfortable doing so, and will be posting them when they come in! And naturally, if Dispel decides to comment, I’ll update this--but radio silence so far.

We are about to enter a new nuclear age.
Just over 77 years ago we entered into a new age of nuclear warfare. With the dawn of the ICBM age, we success averted nuclear war only by the madness of mutually assured destruction.
Two times in history we were on the brink and the doctrine of MAD saved the world. First between October 16, 1962 and October 29, 1962. The second time in 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, also during a similar timeframe from October 6- October 25.
We are as close to nuclear annihilation now as we were those years ago, but the public is much less aware, and I think this time, we will likely see a nuclear exchange at some level.
Why?
1) The US president has no stomach for nuclear war. Although noble in principle, that attitude almost guarantees that Putin will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons in an effort to win a war in Ukraine. Nuclear deterrent is only a deterrent when all nuclear powers make clear that any use of nuclear weapons will be met with nuclear annihilation. Anything less is no deterrent at all.
2) The US no longer follows a launch on warning strategy. Faced with a full scale attack, the US president would have about 12 minutes to decide how to respond to a nuclear strike, before becoming a victim. Hypersonics (particularly submarine launched ones) and autonomous nuclear torpedos can essentially reduce the response time to zero. Should Putin desire to decapitate US or NATO leadership, he easily can, although I do not think this is likely.
3) Putin is in a corner. He has had not delivered in any of the military or political objectives that were stated at the start of the war in Ukraine. Russia grossly underestimated the West's willingness to support Ukraine with weapons and assistance, and has also grossly overestimated it's own military capabilities.
4) Politically Putin has all but committed to the hardliners in the Kremlin to use nuclear weapons. The sabatage of the Nord Stream pipeline the same week as annexations of parts of Ukraine as sovereign Russian territory are a sign of that commitment. Putin has clearly placed himself in a position where he must win at any cost, and must punish Europeans for their support of Ukraine. He has to make conflict with Russia so unthinkable that European interests will capitulate fully to his demands. He intends to do this by showing his willingness to unleash the nuclear demon, fully aware that he will face no meaningful consequence.
5) the US and NATO are unwilling, and likely unable to mount any response that is politically tenable under the most likely scenarios. Any non nuclear response will be read by the Russians as weakness. And Putin will double down on the nuclear deterrent of his own once he achieved his aims. It will be very hard for the democraticly elected governments of the world to advance any form of nuclear retaliation once the effects of whatever nuke Putin elects to use are seen on TV.
What do I think will happen? Absent a credible threat to Putin's continued existence from the US, I think the following miat likely.
Following Putin's anexation of the additional areas of Ukraine, Putin will demand the immediate and unconditional surrender of all Ukrainian forces. This will be coupled with specific threats to the Ukrainian government and the governments of the nations that support Russia. If Ukraine does not comply (and I have no reason to believe they will), a nuclear attack will be launched. This initial attack, most likely to occur in early to mid October, will target Kyiv, and may include EMP strikes against NATO countries, and possibly even the US, by Russia's mostodern weapons. Putin will want as much media coverage of these events as possible. He will threaten the world with a full force level nuclear exchange of his demands are not met. If the West does not retaliate immediately, the likelihood of nuclear retaliation will rapidly fall to zero as the world deals with the consequences of nuclear weapon use and realizes that Putin's threats are not empty. Any attempt at a decapitation strike, or retaliation will be met with further nuclear weapon usage. Russia will face economic isolation, but a miserable winter in Europe will insure that does not last too long.
I think this course of action is all but inevitable as long as the US and NATO do not commit to defending Ukraine on a nuke for nuke basis, the whole strategy appears to be based around the idea that nuclear exchange is unthinkable to the west and complete necessary under the Russian view.
I hope I am wrong, but I am far more concerned about nuclear war today than I have been at any other time in my life.
