Screaming into the void: How to stand out in a crowd
Capturing Attention in Social Media
Social media platforms rely on user engagement but what are the best strategies to keep and grow that engagement? Capturing attention of their users can simply be defined as the ability to attract and hold interest of users while they scroll through their feeds. It involves creating content that stands out, engages an audience, and encourages them to stop and interact. This is important to companies for a handful of reasons. The most obvious is brand awareness, companies need attention-grabbing content to help build and reinforce the awareness of their brand. Other reasons could be promoting a call to action, driving engagement for profits, or conveying messages effectively to increase brand validity (Kuofie, et al., 2015).
There are many challenges that make growing viewer engagement difficult in the social media landscape. Social media platforms are constantly flooded with new and ever-changing content, which can make it extremely difficult to stand out in the crowd. It also doesn't help that the average attention span is 8 seconds, shorter than a goldfish (Snow, 2023)! With apps like TikTok and Instagram, people are getting hooked on content that comes in hot and gets the point across quick.
Some potential strategies for companies to implement could be crafting compelling headlines and captions. It's been proven that posts with moral or emotional content are more likely to go viral across multiple platforms; suggesting that authentic connection does drive user interaction (Brady, et al., 2020). Another strategy could be staying current on trends and adapting to algorithms. Things change at the drop of a hat, staying informed and incorporating the latest trends can help brands remain relevant. The final strategy is establishing prompt and authentic engagement with an audience. Responding to comments and questions provides a more connected experience and tends to foster a stronger sense of community. At the end of the day, connection is what drives most people. If companies can prioritize keeping those connections consistent and positive, that can help users coming back.
Maintaining Engagement in Social Media
Maintaining engagement in social media is very similar to capturing it in the first place. At the end of the day, it comes down to the process of actively getting your audience to interact with your content (likes, comments, reposts, etc.). It's not just important for gaining attention but also keeping it. The goal is to foster a dynamic and interactive relationship between the content creator and the audience. This is important because it helps strengthen brand loyalty and offers opportunities for feedback and improvement; which if done correctly, can continue to grow an audience (Kuofie, et al., 2015).
There are lots of strategies for maintaining this sort of engagement. Creators should prioritize regularly posting a wide variety of content. Switching between graphics, videos, polls, and images keeps your audience on their toes and engaged. One could implement contests or giveaways that promote the sharing of their content to a wider reach of people. Lastly, engaging in conversations that are relevant and positive. Social media is a world of faux authenticity and people are relatively good at sniffing that out; but when creators are genuine and true to their mission, more users want to support it. That authenticity is what encourages users to stay (Brady, et al., 2020).

May I Have Your Attention Please!
Capturing Attention in Social Media
In the world of instant gratification and “gold fish” attention spans, how can we hold an audience’s attention long enough to get them interested in our message and draw them in to hear it? Do we go after their emotions? Should we hop on the band wagon and make content that is “trending”? Maybe starting with an attention-grabbing photo or video might do the trick. Well, the answer is, all the above! Capturing the attention of social media users means you are not only able to keep them engaged but you are able to keep them actively seeking out your content and wanting more. If you are a business seeking to grow your sales and expand your customer base or an influencer who uses social media as their main source of income, understanding the science and psychology of social media is vital.
Dr. Gloria Marks from the University of California has been studying the attention spans of humans since 2004. According to her research, humans had an average attention span of 2 1/2 minutes in 2004 and now they have found the average to be less than minute! (47 seconds to be exact!) (Why Our Attention Spans Are Shrinking, With Gloria Mark, PhD, n.d.) Since you have so little time to work with, it’s important to be strategic when it comes to your social media posts.
Use photos and videos to capture the user’s attention.
Follow the trends! Use popular hash tags and trending topics to reach a bigger audience that may not have seen your content otherwise.
The average social media user uses 3 more social media platforms. Make sure your content is customizable to any platform so you can appeal to more users.
Maintaining Engagement in Social Media
One you have your follower’s attention, you don’ t want to lose it. You didn’t do all that hard work for nothing! Maintaining that engagement means keeping them coming back for more and sharing your content to their friends and family. You have to constantly be in tune to what your customers and followers want to see and engage with and figuring out how to marry that with your message or products.
Be yourself! As cliché as that may be, it is important to always stay true to yourself or brand. Users will appreciate and relate more with you and your content if you are authentic.
Keep a consistent schedule for posting content. The more your followers see you the more they will want to keep seeing you!
Engage with your followers. Ask their opinions, engage with their comments, and see what content they’d like to see more of. (Wesley-Powell, 2022)

A Predator's Playground
In this era known as the "Digital Age," people are socializing online now more than ever. Between connecting with family and friends on social media, or swiping right on Tinder, connecting with people has never been easier. But where there's good, also comes bad and unfortunately when it comes to child predators, the access to victims has also never been so easy. Online you can be anybody you want to be, and these predators do just that, taking on completely new and false identities for the intent of luring in their underage victims. In one case in Toronto, Stephen Alexander Martin, a 38-year-old elementary school teacher, posed as a 14-year-old teen named Ashley Matthews. While posing as Ashley, Martin was able to persuade multiple teenage boys to perform sexual acts during video chats and send explicit videos. Martin was later exposed and was charged with 10 counts of internet luring and possession of child pornography. During the investigation, authorities discovered roughly 9,500 explicit photos of underage children as well as videos.
But how can parents help prevent their kids from becoming targets? Starting conversations about social media etiquette and how to be safe online is paramount. During the investigation against Martin, detectives were amazed at how open kids were with their lives online and how much personal information they were freely giving to people they didn't personally know. Families having discussions about communicating only with people they know, and what shouldn't be posted on social media accounts can go a long way towards keeping children safe. Just like when you take your kids to the park, you always keep an eye on them to ensure their safety, and in fact, the online world is also like a playground; but perhaps for the wrong type of people.

"Yeah? What, like you as unna them Frrrench qurls." He went from his normal AAVE accent to a French R to a goofy Boston-like accent rapid fire, what about it? Threw in a flamboyant pose for fun too.
But was also fetching around in his 'pockets' for things. Which turned out to be a small sketch book, pen, and his house glasses. Fuck you. Don't even bring them up. They weren't heart shaped, more rectangular, but still pink with some little gold accents.
However, if Alastor left Val to his own drawing devices, he's getting an artistic rendering of Vox's dick so--speak up if that wasn't what he wanted to end up with.
"You can draw, can't you?" Things he's heard while being holed up in the tower. Don't ask him where or from who.
"Draw me something."
