I need advice.

I’m a white intern working in a mostly white southern(ish) high school. Students of Color number at under 2%, perhaps even lower. It’s a very white, rural community - I grew up in a fairly mixed, suburban northern community, and part of my family is Black.

Several of my white students say rude things to my Students of Color. I’ve told them to knock it off *as appropriately as I can* but I’m probably one of the few adults that actively discourage that behavior.

I don’t want to let this shit fly under the radar, but I also know that if an adult of authority *who will only be here for a couple more weeks* interferes, and then doesn’t stick around, it could make things worse. Additionally, I know these kids are probably very very very used to this ‘system’ and that making a short-term change could be more harmful than helpful.

I asked one of my senior students after a very racist incident *where she was laughing along with the perpetrator but I told him to stop anyway* that I can move him, or her, so she could be more comfortable (admin either does nothing or slaps wrists, especially for seniors). She said it was fine and that he was always like that.

I must emphasize, I think they were bantering (they talk so much I think they consider each other friends?), but it was also wayyy fucking out of line, especially in a school setting. And the guy says so much out of line shit I’m surprised he isn’t rocking a full set of dentures to replace the teeth he ought to have lost by now.

Another student took me up on my offer to move people, but I ended up moving him, which sucks because he was the victim in this situation. Unfortunately, I have to keep his aggressors in their spots, as they are highly rowdy in all the ways and require a lot more supervision than he did. And the class is really full. These were also all freshmen, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that affected the victim’s reaction.

So I’d really appreciate advice as to whether I should let it be, or continue as is, or step it up even more, from People of Color in largely white, especially rural, communities. Like any advice from current or previous educators, especially Educators of Color would be appreciated, but specifically southern/rural ones would be wonderful. I’m going to talk to my family members about it, but they’ve lived in more Northern settings their entire lives and they may have less … applicable (?) experience to the situation.

Again, I’m an intern, I’m going to only be there until winter break 2024, and I don’t want to fuck things up for these kids in the long run with my northern ally ‘sensibilities’. Thank you!

Okay so yall know the Frostbek oneshot I posted a while back? Yeah, that wasn’t the initial one. That was technically the second one. Which I wrote as a way to avoid writing the first one, because I couldn’t figure out how to write a conversation between Frost and Gricko that sounded real enough from Gricko’s end (why is this fucker so hard to write omfg)

Anyway, I say this bc I just realized that I’m nearly at the point in my rewatch I was at when I initially started writing the oneshot. I mean, I’m nearly done with the oneshot now (thank fuck, this thing is a BEAST), and it’ll either be done sometime tonight or tomorrow if I keep on it. So hopefully I’ll post it sometime on Wednesday :)

Ok I'm going to ramble super long about 'and for my boon' and the ethics of cringe or something and I feel bad so here's a cut off

I find it fascinating that the fandom wide "that was cringe" moment is that of Kaladin (a character who's been mistreated and discriminated against his entire life, who's finally been treated a little better and is being reassured over and over again that he can trust these people, they won't hurt him this time, they're not like all the other people and systems that have hurt him) trying to do something right only for those people to directly turn on him the second he misinterprets something and tries to believe that for once, maybe the system could be fair for him ("and for my boon") and not... Idk. Dalinar saying "you are a minority, you do not get to operate on the same level as us, try to be one of the good ones so people will treat you nicer." once he's in prison. Or, if it's that the fandom needs to cringe at Kaladin specifically, how about the time he told Rlain that because he was a singer he couldn't just expect radiant spren to want to bond with him without some measure of force and had to "settle for what he could get"?

What specifically about the boon scene is so off-putting? A lot of people talk about it like Kaladin stepped out of line or beyond his station and that was his great crime. That he publicly said something so embarrassing that everyone else knew was ridiculous and really, why did he try to begin with? Didn't he know he hadn't earned anything better? Couldn't he remember he was supposed to behave like someone who is oppressed? If that is the reason the scene bothers you, please think a bit about why someone defying systems of oppression upsets you so much. Why you think someone should accept their trauma and always behave in a way that conforms to the paranoia it has caused.

I've tried to reevaluate personally and have come to determine my discomfort is not in Kaladin's action itself - he was doing the best he could with the information he had at the time, and trying to have a sense of optimism despite his mental illnesses and experiences so often screaming that he could expect nothing, and also he was tired but pumped up on adrenaline for having just done one of the coolest things in fiction. My discomfort is in the reaction I know is coming. Elhokar throwing a fit and turning on him. Dalinar falling in line and supporting that as a little act of appeasement; trading Kaladin's well being and trust to calm down the king who wants to believe he's in charge even though he never really has been. Dalinar being so angry for Kaladin daring to believe he could be an equal.

Do we consider honest and earnest mistakes to be more upsetting than gross misuses of privilege? Is the status quo being challenged more upsetting than the horrible continuation of unfairness and the punishment that come before and after?

Kaladin is expected to get over his trauma and distrust. To believe that the lighteyes he's met are different or better somehow, but even the "better ones" reinforce that distrust and feeling of unsafety. (See Shallan taking his boots and treating him with general disdain, Adolin straight up bullying him and othering him for like half a book, AND THROWING HIM WHILE WEARING SHARDPLATE JUST BECAUSE HE'S UPSET, Dalinar being like "I will treat you nicer, as long as you are perfect and compliant" and Elhokar being Elhokar.) A character with canonical PTSD is tsked at whenever he's not hyper vigilant and when he is everyone goes "he's always so on edge :( I wish he'd realize he can just trust these people."

Don't get me wrong, I love the other characters, I know their actions and views are also due to their life circumstances and they do their best to confront them when they realize they're incorrect... But they don't always realize, and even then that doesn't undo the harm. We also have to bear in mind in any book that we have greater context than the characters within. Kaladin didn't read all of Adolin and Dalinar's perspectives. It takes time for him to know and trust them, and that makes sense.

Oppression and the ways it affects different groups with levels of severity and ignorance is a theme that is impossible to separate from Stormlight and its characters. Without it... Well you'd lose the whole plot for one. It's one of the things I appreciate about it as a story. That does mean that there can be some... interesting takes from the fandom (I won't lie, I have contributed to those myself, I've had my own biases to unlearn and that I am still unlearning. I do think that interpretation is one of the most important parts of media consumption as its worth is what we take from it. idk. just wanting to think too much about this general fandom trend a little more critically for a second)

Just. Idk. Why is it always "and for my boon was cringe" and not "Adolin being both sexist and racist by saying 'well I guess it's ok if you have a shardblade, Shallan; Kaladin has one too and he's darkeyed and both of those things are kind of weird' then Shallan internally being like 'don't compare high class women to them, we're better than that :(' was uncomfortable"

i lost the post but i saw someone talking about how some of y’all act like being weird is a choice and like. YEAHHHHHHH.

that’s fine, it might be for you. but i just live like this and don’t know any other way. like yeah i’ve worked customer service, i can do innocuous small talk, but anything beyond that, i don’t understand what i’m missing. and it’s frustrating to see the tonal disconnect especially from people who are like “uwu embrace weirdness!!” where they’re like. dressing quirky and talking about bugs and listening to obscure music and eschewing small talk to ask Deep Questions on the first date and unlearning their tendency to not infodump. and generally have an idea of what Weirdness is supposed to look like. idk man some of us wake up and get out of bed and can’t figure out why the rest of their coworkers chitchat with each other but when they join the conversation it dies.

weirdness is value neutral. let’s stop trying to turn it into a badge because quite frankly, it’s not a choice for everyone. it’s fucking exhausting to never be on the same wavelength as other people and they’re going to react the way they do and label you the way they will without any conscious actions on your end. it’s difficult to talk about this without feeling like you’ll be dismissed as immature, a teenager whining “no one understands me” but the thing is. sometimes you don’t grow out of feeling alone and different, and there’s no good way to talk about it without feeling like people will think you’re just fishing for pity.

YEAAAAH im glad you like them! the hippogriffs and griffons are two of my absolute favorite creatures, so im very biased to them :) (also glad that you can tolerate my other post lol)

i suppose on that topic, it gives me a good excuse to show off the last 6 beast/giant variants going into the mods since i already finished all their sprites.

first up is the stymphalian bird! it's a small bird with feathers composed of bronze. they're docile by nature but are capable of shooting out their metal feathers to attack their predators

...on the other hand there's the giant variant, which is vicious by extension of living in savage lands

speaking of giant variants, there's 5 other ones being added

(griffon, fae dragon, bicorn, warg (it's default sprite was changed and the old sprite repurposed), and chimera)

the other brand new creatures are:

owl bear, a large carnivore with claws capable of slashing through metal. inspired by the cool looking owl bears from baldur's gate 3 that i saw when a friend was streaming the game. can be war trained if tamed

basilisk and mandrake

the basilisk are aggressive carnivores which possess a gaze that can turn their prey to stone, similar to the gorgons. unlike the gorgon's stare though, supposing their victim doesn't die while in statue form, they will return to normal after an in game week (they dont require food/water/breathing while afflicted)

Mandrake are small plant creatures who live rarely in underground lakes, where they 'breed' by planting their seeds in the ground. upon death they drop their seeds which can be planted to make very potent ale. the ale has many beneficial effects, such as helping infection and stress relief, but also has a grocery list of rare (2-10% odds) of triggering multiple ill side effects, such as nausea and sending a person into a fit of rage. made entirely just to make taverns all the more FUN

something i didn't plan to add, but added based on request: a tressym! flying cats from forgotten realms (and also baldur's gate) that i thought looked cool and had interesting enough lore to make a good addition. I only actually finished their sprites earlier tonight, and their raws aren't made yet.

going off what i read about them, they were going to be the same size as a cat, capable of being 4 different colors/coat patters, and immune to poison. it also mentioned them being able to see invisible creatures, so i'd like to play around with them having extra vision/high stats to be able to detect ambushers, tho i'd need to test to make sure they dont completely trivialize it. Was planning to make them like the griffons and wargs, where they have the [PET] token, but not [COMMON_DOMESTIC], so there's a chance for dwarves and humans to tame them in world gen, but they would hopefully be very rare due to their spawn biome (taiga?) and frequency (was thinking around 7%)

last but not least, another mega beast, this time the Undead Dragon! an undead mega beast that's intended to be a similar difficulty to the bronze colossus. it lacks blood, and damaging organs or connections doesn't bother it. It is capable of raising corpses once a day, and breathing a cool breath that makes a target drowsy and nauseous. while it can of course be killed in the usual dwarven solutions (magma, crushing) it can also be killed instantly by being speared in the skull by a spear, or decapitated. it is not capable of flight due to it's body being too rotted.

This Is How (You Haunt Me) - and other ghost stories by Pyrria

This anthology is a collection of four haunted MingCheng fics - Forgive Me (Save Me), Come Back To Me, This Is How (You Haunt Me), and Good Bones - all written by Pyrria (@pyrriawrites over on twitter), and I kind of just committed to a forest vibe for all the designs.
