My parents were frugal not simply because they had to be careful, but because they saw little reason for making life about money.

Question 7:
Oh, no! You've been exposed to radiation, and a mutated hand has grown out of your stomach! What's the best course of treatment?
1. A bullet to the brain.
2. Large doses of anti-mutagen agent.
3. Prayer. Maybe God will spare you in exchange for a life of pious devotion.

The Weekly Gravy #184
The Life of Emile Zola (1937) – *** 30 minutes into The Life of Emile Zola, we cut from Zola, who’s risen from an impoverished young writer living in a garret to a wealthy middle-aged man living in luxury, to Maj. Esterhazy (Robert Barrat) writing a letter to the German military attaché which will be intercepted and kick off the Dreyfus affair, and the rest of the film will revolve around the…

7, 11, 12, and 14 for the ask game?
7. Favorite G3 parent(s)?
Apollo is definitely up there! Best dad award goes to...
But also, Dracula is great too! I love how much character development he's received this season. Starting from being super stubborn and non-approachable about witchcraft to being like "I'll try to bend the rules and make witchcraft acceptable" and "here, daughter of mine, let me help you with your witch studies!" Like, what a great dad T-T also, his egotistical moments can be really funny! That whole interaction he had with Apollo about his "really handsome friend" was hilarious. Other parents are wonderful too, we just don't get to see them a ton. Lyra and Medusa are adorable, and the way Medusa described how she fell for Lyra was so sweet 🥺
11. Any G3 ships you'd like to see?
The only ship I'm a die hard fan of is clankie, and they're canon 💅 not to brag or anything SHHJSH /lh. So basically, more clankie!! I hope we get to see more of them being together in season 2. Maybe there will be a date episode...👀
But, I know it was stated in the MH bible that Clawdeen is a lesbian. Even if the bible isn't real, would love to potentially see her embark on a gay little storyline! But single icon Clawdeen is also wonderful!
12. Are there any canon relationships (platonic or otherwise) in G3 you enjoy or don't enjoy especially?
hehehe I wonder what ship I enjoy...
IT'S CLANKIE OF COURSE!! XD
They're just so adorable!! And queer love is so precious!
Platonic-wise, I love Deuce and Frankie's relationship. With Portrait of a Monster being my favorite episode, their friendship dynamic/interactions are so fun!
For ones I don't enjoy... there's none in particular I hate. I just feel like some are exceptionally rushed. Like Gil and Lagoona. They only had two episodes (one being Gil's introductory episode) before they ended up going to the Monster Ball together. If people ship them though, then that's totally chill and I respect you :) if you don't ship them, that's also totally chill, and I respect you too!
14. You have been given the chance to design the G3 version of one G1-introduced character. Who do you choose?
Ooo this one is tough. Probably Heath...💀 I've gotten used to his design, but at first, it was jarring for a lot of people to see HSJHJ (no offense, Heath). I like some of the changes they made. As weird as it sounds, I kinda like the bald-ness XD I feel like it makes sense that his hair is literally fire that can be put out at any time. Not sure how I feel about the blue in his design; blue and orange (which is a large part of his color scheme) are on opposite ends of the color wheel, so it sorta throws me off a little. I'd probably have a fun time integrating more red/orange/black colors into his outfits and design :)

"I woke pitching forward as the car abruptly slew to a halt. Within moments my parents were outside searching in the weak glow of the car's headlights on that lonely road for the Tasmanian tiger-even then a mythical creature which had just crossed in front of our car. I followed, confused, feeling the wetness of fog beading on my face, seeing only puddles in the dimly lit muddy gravel...
...At some point I came to understand that I wrote from the frontlines of a war about which most have no idea. For a long time I could not understand that it was possible to be both on the side that has the power, that has unleashed the destruction, vast as it is indescribable, and, at the same time, be on the side that loses everything.
To do that you have to return to a child blinking in the rain, staring into the darkness, looking for something that his parents saw only an instant before and which has already vanished for all time, never to return.
That's life."

Richard Flanagan's Question 7
Tumblr media
A fabulous interview with Richard Flanagan in The Guardian after he won the Baillie Gifford Prize nonfiction for his book, Question 7:
“This book is about my father and my mother,” he says, “their love for each other and the way they used love to find meaning in a world they knew to otherwise be meaningless. I think everyone is confronted at a certain point with the knowledge that the universe is empty of meaning. So the question is: how do we go on? They found meaning through kindness and goodness to each other and to others. They practised that love and they fought for that love for decades. It ceased to be what I thought was an illusion, and became their hard-fought-for reality. It became a truth – it was really a form of magic, and they the magicians. I realised it was an immense achievement. They came from very poor backgrounds: they understood the hardness and harshness of this life, yet they found wonder within it everywhere.”

with the pain scale poll making the rounds on chronic illness tumblr, i DO want to add the caveat that you Generally Should Not use that scale with unfamiliar doctors.
like, if you gotta go to urgent care or the ER for something related to your illness. Do Not Use A Reasonable Scale.
on the scale i wrote, a 5 (exact middle of the scale) means, "i am actually crippled from this pain and unable to live my life normally, BUT i retained the ability to drive here and walk inside unassisted."
PEOPLE WITHOUT CHRONIC ILLNESS REPORT THAT AS A 10.
for the majority of people without chronic pain, ANY pain that's significant enough to go to urgent care counts as a 10. i've been reliably told by EMTs and paramedics and nurses that they often get answers of "11" or "700" when asked to rate between 1 and 10.
when a doctor hears you say 5, they think, "ah, so this pain is mild and not distressing. it's just a little annoying." ie: about a 2 on the scale i wrote.
always, always, ALWAYS up your estimate by 3 or 4 points when you're interacting with a new doc. you MUST communicate, "this is urgent and needs urgent attention."
assume everyone else gives a 10 when they've badly pulled a muscle in their lower back. adjust your estimate around that.
