Villa’s Tacos, 5455 N Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Tumblr media
Villa’s Tacos replaced La Chiquita (miss LC’s quesabirria tacos and consommé). There are many good things about Villa’s Tacos. It’s clearly run by someone passionate about tacos (he started serving tacos from his grandpa’s backyard, then opened a taco stand on York). The flavors seem unbalanced to me. The condiments are better than the meat and veggie fillings but the condiments also overwhelm the rest of what’s on top of the tortilla.
The blue corn tortillas are handmade and pressed to order. All orders are served with radish, lime wedges, and tangy hibiscus pickled onions. Guac is never extra.
Choose from tacos, queso tacos, mulitas, and taco trios. Fillings: pierna de pollo, ranchera asada, chorizo, soyrizo, frijoles con nopal, papas a la plancha. Tacos are $3.25. They’re generous with fillings, so it’s a good deal. They also sell aguas frescas and branded merchandise.
Vegan trio ($11.50): one frijoles con nopal taco, one frijoles con papa taco, one soyrizo con papa taco. The tacos were piled generously. Each one was different but tasted similar because the salsas and wonderful pickled onions were strongly flavored and the fillings weren’t as flavorful. But I appreciated the different textures. The potatoes are cut into tiny cubes. The beans add some creaminess. The soyrizo had a sweet sauce. Diced nopals didn’t have much flavor. Some of the salsas were quite spicy.
The restaurant is small with two benches inside and limited outdoor seating. Order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. They have a table with salsas (no labels or signs) and pickled onions. Got my tacos pretty quickly (5 minutes?).
The restaurant has a youthful, street taco feel even though they’ve moved indoors.

heyy queso! whats your family like?
Heyyy! Lemme tell you, interesting people we have back at our place.
All of us kinda consider Mami the leader of the house, even her! She's the one that kinda runs the family business. I guess she's the "serious" parent? But she has amazing cooking skills, which I really hope I inherited somehow-
Papi is a sweetheart. Not really Spanish, but he's trying his best and it SHOWS. Really, he'll try to throw in vocabulary sometimes to show off what he knows. Mostly has iffy pronunciation tho, but he's determined. He's silly, and a stand-up comedian, so he's gotta be funny.
And y'know, there's always the oddball, and literally. You got Taco, really fancy for some reason, but even though she doesn't admit it, we're both just as silly. I'm guessing she got the accent and... "flavorful personality" from our "older sister" or whatever. But you know what? She's fun! I've never met someone else who knows really big and confusing words. And she has good aim. Just always wished she also thought I was fun.

Herb Day
Herb Day, celebrated on the first Saturday in May, is a holiday that simply encourages planting herbs and celebrates people who have a culture of growing herbs. This year it falls on May 6. It was created and organized by the HerbDay Coalition, which is an organization of five non-profit groups. The holiday encourages people to learn more about herbs, cultivate them and use them more extensively in their daily lives.
History of Herb Day
Herb Day was created in 2006, a time when ‘herb’ was still a bit of a scary word. Medical doctors, naturopaths, and acupuncturists were not yet comfortable incorporating herbs into their practices, and the public knew very little about the subject. The HerbDay Coalition is made up of five non-profit organizations that wished to create a day for people to celebrate the healing power of herbs. On the first Saturday in May, we invite you to have your own celebration with the herbs you have in your garden or on your patio.
The world of plants was divided into trees, shrubs, and herbs by the ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus. Herbs are also further classified into three groups, namely pot herbs, sweet herbs, and salad herbs. During the 1600s, pot herbs began to be referred to as vegetables as they were no longer considered only suitable for the pot.
In its early stages, botany was primarily a study of the pharmacological uses of plants, and by the Middle Ages, with the advent of humoral theory in medicine, the position was made that foodstuffs, having their own humoral qualities, could, in turn, alter the humoral temperaments of humans.
Popular plants parsley and sage were often used together for cooking in medieval times. A renowned therapeutic nutriment of that age, chicken broth, as well as green sauce, were usually prepared with parsley and sage.

1600s Pot Herbs Are Referred To As Vegetables
