You know what? Maybe it's a controversial opinion but it makes sense why, no matter what Jason does or how he changes or how long ago it was, Bruce will always hold how he has killed people in the past over his head.

We're talking about a man who puts on a cape and cowl every night because of the memory of helplessness he has from being a kid who watched his parents be mugged then murdered in front of him. A man who has control issues. A deeply troubled man who has contingency plans for even his children.

There is nothing Jason can do if Bruce isn't willing to work with him. Not as Batman and Red Hood, but as Bruce and Jason.

The ball is in Bruce's court.

He needs to start putting in the work to forgive Jason, forgive himself for the perception that he failed Jason by 'letting' him become a killer, and change how he sees Jason. Because while he sees his son, Jason? I'm betting he also sees a Joe Chill-esque 'monster' he had a hand in releasing on the world. Doesn't matter that Jason has a no-kill policy now. This is Bruce's problem he needs to fix.

And how does he do that?

Therapy.

my mystery trio AU headcanon (Fiddlestan):

- Fiddleford finds out one day that Stanford has a twin brother, and was like "how have I known you since uni and you never once mentioned this" (Ford probably got drunk and blurted it out).

- Fidds also finds out about the whole "Stanley is estranged after being kicked out by our father" bit.

- Fidds really values family and he's kinda torn up with guilt that he left his wife and newborn to be here in the first place. He persuades Ford to invite Stan to Gravity Falls so they can make up (family therapy by proxy).

- Ford is aroace and Fidds is VERY repressed homosexual. The teeny tiny crush Fidds had on him died out in college because Ford doesn't want him like that.

- But when Fidds sees Stan.... wow. It's everything about Ford he was attracted to but BETTER. He's completely enamored. He's also taking the "am i gay" quiz STAT.

- Stan sees Fidds and practically has a cartoon AWOOGA moment. He's smitten at first sight, will do absolutely anything for this damn engineer.

- Stan is very open about his sexuality because in his mind, he has a lot more to worry about than who he fucks.

- Stanley wants to make amends with Ford because he never truly hated him, not really, and he knows it was mostly their father's fault anyway for favoring Ford.

- Stanley originally thinks Fidds and Ford are together just by the fact that they're grown men who moved in together. He thinks the whole "lab partner" title is an elaborate cover up for what's really going on. (It was the 80s.)

- And he's honestly a bit jealous, something something about Ford always being preferred over him. (He's very mentally ill okay...)

- "Oh no darling, Ford and I aren't like that"/"🙂"/"Between you and me, I reckon he doesn't have those types of feelings for anyone..."/"😄"/"Besides, I got my wife and kid at home"/"🤯🤯🤯😨😨☹️☹️"

- When they finally open up about their big fat crushes on each other Stanley is just so overwhelmed because for once in his life. HE is the first choice and not his brother.

Trc hc: I think of Adam as having a little more internalized homophobia than I think is the general fandom consensus. not a ton and not in the sense of like Ronan’s which is closer to the standard feeling like his attractions are wrong because of the way he’s been raised and religious guilt, Adam didn’t respect or want to emulate his parents the way Ronan did with Niall so doesn’t take on their views in that way, and he’s not religious at all so that’s not a factor. But I do think he has a very loaded relationship with conformity and desire for it, his model of WASP-y success that he strives for when he talks about it in early trc is also a very straight model and so I do think it would factor in as another thing that makes him feel *other* / make conforming even harder (especially at Aglionby) in a way he would resent, even if it’s a smaller factor compared to many other things he’s going through at all times. Like his internalized classism is much more of a factor in his world view and relationships compared to how he feels about his sexuality, but at the same time there are intersections so I don’t really see him having zero hang ups about the latter when he has so many about the former.

THIS IS GREAT. I totally agree 💯 also makes total sense why he collected a couple of gays at harvard and calls them the crying club teehee ALSO i think he def probably has some internalized biphobia, invalidating his own feelings/not being okay with there being a "middle" or an in between so I think even among queer friends he is probably still comparing himself about every aspect of his life - childhood, money, education, sexuality, etc.

My surreal fantasy WIP comprised of a collection of different stories linked by a unifying setting.

Colour-Coded to the max. Each central story focuses on a character assigned a colour, differing in tone, POV, and focus. Main three are purple, blue, and red.

Charms and incantations of old swirl in from afar, weaving our hands together with something much deeper than flesh – a curious sentiment oozing from the recesses of Damsel’s cloak as the feeling of moss and stone wove through my veins; cold and refreshing.

‘What absurdity’, The Arbiter would think to himself. After all, those carmine red eyes of his delve into the primaeval madness: in their muddy depths lies the shivering madness - Fear. From fear is the knowledge wrenched from uncertainty and bloodshot eyes. Dread is the light; tugging on world-weary watchers. 

Sort of portal fantasy, sort of not. The stories in this WIP span across many eras and places, yet often find themselves connecting and mingling. Incredibly queer.

Fallen Hero: Sidestep 1?

Not sure how to even start this. I guess basic info and then fun/not fun facts? Here we go! Also if it matters, all my sidesteps are gender queer one way or another. Either trans, non-binary, ect

Name: Nicole Saxon Gender: female she/her Villain Name: Robin Hood Villainous Role: thief Motivation: life Scar: friendless Reason for gala: money Where is she now?: at the ranch with her girlfriend, Julia Ortega.. with both her legs broken. Not everything is great. Nicole is an entire mess, that could be said about all sidesteps but she feels like a mess in particular. Nicole as a villain is a technology thief that steals from villains, saves people, doesn’t kill (yet), gives to charity, and would help a kitten out of a tree for a kid. She desperately misses being a hero. She also desperately misses having friends. Having the friendless scar is rough on Nicole. She knows she’s messed up for feeling the complete lack of connection to other people and misses the feeling of companionship and camaraderie she felt as sidestep. She has such a need to feel it again she will manipulate people to get a connection. Things Nicole is willing to do include but are not limited to: befriending Mortum as the puppet, using her telepathy to make Argent think of her as a friend, and of course risk getting caught as a villain relighting old friendships and old romances. Nicole is so bothered by her scar, so lonely that she is suicidal. But thankfully her.. girlfriend? Yeah we’ll say girlfriend. Is having her go to therapy and Nicole is working through things herself. She hopes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Her motivation being life doesn’t mean she wants “the good life”. Nicole just wants to live. She “works” and lives at an electronic repair shop with a coworker she likes and gets to help out the rangers every now and then. That’s the life she wants. At least it’s second to her becoming a hero again, but that ship has.. probably sailed. Either way Nicole needs money and a lot of it to keep herself and her loved ones safe.

Fun facts?: Nicole is my sidestep “prime”. On account of her being my first ever play through. Nicole is probably the friendliest of my sidesteps, or at least the least prickly. She also jokes a lot. If there is a teasing or joke response she most likely chooses it. Also, I just remembered she has like 92% empathy if that shows anything. As said before, Nicole is relighting an old romance. With Julia Ortega. They are super sweet together. Though, Nicole is worried that if Ortega would ever find out about her being a regene (which Julia did) or about being a villain (which Julia did not) Julia would abandon her. Nicole’s vice is alcohol. Thanks Ortega… all joking aside Nicole should probably slow down. Nicole’s lowest relationship is Argent at like 68 I think. Due to her high subtle manipulation, Nicole resisted hollowground and was able to “agree” to work for her. Totally not gonna feed information to Ortega. If you’re curious as to why Nicole would do this: Nicole misses being a hero. This might be the closest she will ever get again. Nicole’s handwriting is so bad that before she got a phone as sidestep she left a handwritten note for Ortega. Ortega and the others thought it was written in code. Thinking sidestep was in trouble they searched for her only to find her eating at a diner. Sidestep got a phone shortly after this. Ortega plays the guitar and taught Nicole while she was sidestep. Nicole still plays a little to relax. I can’t think of anything else right now, so let’s end it with appearance and stat stuff? If you care to read: Nicole prefers anonymity to an extent. About 60%-65%. Very much prefers empathy as stated before at about 92%. And is very cautious at 80%ish. She also prefers subtle manipulation, sitting at about an 82. Nicole’s appearance: Race: white, lots of freckles. Height: short. I imagine she is maybe 5ft (1.5m) Hair: curly red hair put into a thick braid over her shoulder. Shut up, it’s aesthetic. Eyes: green.. they used to be blue but then the Void happened. Style: fashionable preppy with lots of piercings. I imagine her wearing lots of skirts with guards and tights with sweaters. On Jennifer's Body, ngl it's the toxicity for me.

So much of the narrative is about control. Specifically, the control of other people. In a hella queer-vibes way.

Jennifer's Body tit-ular characters, regardless of whether the context is read as queer or not, are clearly in a toxic relationship. Needy is subservient to Jennifer. Jennifer controls who Needy sees (by eating them lol), what Needy wears, where Needy goes.

(This comes with guidelines that Needy lists later like she knows them by heart - which she does)

 When Needy doesn't fall in line, she's gaslit, insulted, and pushed around. Jennifer manipulates Needy with words, rough housing, by isolating her from her support network, and via sex. 

(After Needy asks “What the hell was that last night, are you a demon now?”)

(After Needy presses the issue. This line causes Needy to say to herself via narration, “I know it was real”. If Needy’s hands weren’t stained black with demon-vom to prove she wasn’t going nuts, the gaslighting probably would have worked. Even so, when she shows Jennifer, Jennifer just says she needs a mani, stat, and changes the subject.)

(Pretend this is a gif but this is where Jennifer shoves Needy so hard she slams into the door and then doesn’t say a thing before Jennifer drags her out of the house for the concert. No apologies, no ‘oops’.)

(That is Needy’s boyfriend, for non-JB-viewers, and this interaction happens after Jennifer tells him all about how she’s worried Needy’s losing it, and that she’s cheating. Lies. Aaaaaand then she eats him. This is the second example of this. Prior to this she eats a boy after Needy called him nice.)

(A make out session happens right before this. This is an obvious bid to distract Needy, a ploy to get Needy on her side, from Jennifer’s man-eating ways. It doesn’t work lol)

Jennifer, as a man-eater, takes everything away from her but their relationship wasn't healthy before that in the least. Jennifer's powers just took it to a new level. The consequences last with Needy into her adulthood and she'll always carry the scars. Literally.

So what does Needy do when she escapes after she kills her 'Biff'? Decries Jennifer publicly so the world will know the real story instead of vilifying her? Hunts other man-eaters? Gets a new boyfriend? Goes to therapy?

Not that we're shown. Oh no. The first thing she does is kill the people who made Jennifer a man-eater. Because it's personal. Because she blames them. And they definitely played a nasty and vicious part in that but Jennifer's actions thereafter were Jennifer's own. Jennifer gloried in it. It was another way to control her environment that she reveled in.

But Needy still loves Jennifer. Their sandbox love turned sour but still bounds through her, influences her decisions, influences her life. Is there a level of resentment? Certainly. But it's as mixed as the scrambled eggs in her cracked brain.

But a lot about Jennifer’s Body is about Needy’s journey of finding self-certainty. Everyone doubts her, Jennifer plays her, her boyfriend thinks she’s nuts, but Needy finds her certainty and self-belief within herself. She grounds herself. She sees the lies for what they are and doesn’t let herself get distracted from the truth, pursuing it to the end - and eventually finding sweet cathartic vengeance.

And that's the reality of a lot of toxic relationships, and is definitely the reality of mine. I have a lot of resentment toward those people. And confusion, yes, but resentment. But also love. When I think of my "friend" who died (I was one of the first people her family contacted even though we'd been no contact for years by that point. like. why.), I grieve. I miss all of them, even if I know those relationships are bad for all of us and it's better to keep my distance. They all still have a part in my heart.

Except mom's ex-boyfriend who set the playing field, if his alcoholism kills him that's fine by me.

And I think that's reflected there too. We don't want to blame the people we love, even if it's correct. We blame the people who got the ball rolling, no matter how far back that goes, that put us on this shitty path to begin with.

I don’t know why but all my life I've seemed to attract people who seek to beat me down to control me. Some physical, a fair amount sexual, but mostly emotional. 99% of those people were my ‘Biffs’, and those ‘Biffs’ were all, or turned out to be, self identified queer women.

Toxicity doesn’t exist only in cishet relationships. And fun, iconic performances and lines aside

I appreciate that we got a film about that. Us LGBTQ+s aren’t perfect. Pretending we need to be unproblematic little rays of constant sunshine, or unproblematic balls of angst, is virtue-signaling purity culture nonsense that continues to other us and dehumanize us. We’re people. We’re not perfect. Sometimes we can be really fucking awful. The tragedy in this movie is that Jennifer never got the opportunity to grow out of that - it’s that possibility, among other lives ended, that Needy avenges. 

Over all, Jennifer’s Body is a fun romp to identify with, whose emotional journey we can attach to, whose protagonist we can watch grow, and maybe absorb a little bit of her strength to defy those who seek to enslave her, into ourselves, and call them what they are.

Even if she does end up a little cracked but hey, don’t we all.

How I feel about this character

Look, so. Juno Goddamn Steel is very important to me. He’s a disaster, grew up in horrible and traumatizing situations, more trauma than functional adult, and queer as all hell, which are all things i also am. honestly, monster’s reflection is what made me…actually go to therapy and get my PTSD diagnosis. the whole idea of Juno coming to terms with his past, making some kind of peace with it, and moving forward has helped me more than i can say. i don’t understand how this show and this character capture so intimately what it means to try to find meaning in your trauma, to try to make your hurt into a good thing for the world, to fuck that up, and then realize that responsibility you feel to fix things for others isn’t a requirement and move forward into something new. Juno Steel’s realization that the world does not exist in black and white - that an abuser can also be a victim but that doesn’t excuse their behavior - was a little earthshaking for me. Basically, between Monster’s Reflection (July-August 2018) coming out and ~May 2019 I listened to all three parts at least twice a week. I can recite the episodes basically from memory at this point.

Peter! I’m SO glad he didn’t actually show up in Season 2 and Juno couldn’t use him as a way to get around the hard work he needed to do on his own. But now apparently they’re monologuing at each other and also fucking and i’m proud of those two.

Rita and Juno are, of course, eternal best buddies and also rita has saved his ass so many times. I love that their relationship evolved so thoroughly without explicitly breaking the coworker relationship until Juno got his head out of his ass.

Hi thanks for the response, I don’t hate you, and I want you to have a good life, I just disagree with some of views and am genuinely curious about what other people think, and I would like to address some of the tags.

First saying “lgb drop the t” is honestly not a good way to get your point across as most people agree that lgbtqia+ is something that should include everyone who is falls out of society’s norms on gender, sexuality, and anatomy.

I think something a lot of people don’t know is that trans women and men are biologically different and studies have show that trans women have a brian structure close to that of a cis women’s than a man, not only that but there have been multiple historical instances of trans people.

I of course you don’t have the statistics I wouldn’t expect you too, I just want you to have some perspective and maybe do a bit of research into the hate and oppression trans and other gender queer people face.

I know personally from being a trans person that it is not from my internalized homophobia (I don’t know why it would be) and is not autogynphobia. I struggle every feeling as if I was born into the wrong body and it makes day to day life pretty difficult so I hope you can understand at least my personal struggles even if you still don’t fully understand the trans experience.

And although I disagree with it please ask for a space or groups for only cis women with out making about excluding trans women.

I’ll address each point individually to make things easy on myself.

1. Most TRAs approach us radfems with hateful intent.

2a. “Lgb drop the t” is a general radfem/gender critical tag that I use to spread my posts. It isn’t that deep. Plus, the LGB is united in our same sex attraction. The T was originally added to accommodate same-sex attracted people who also enjoyed crossdressing and considered themselves “transsexual”. The current trans rights movement is homophobic and its goals are antithetical to the rights and needs of the LGB. They ask us (I’m a lesbian for reference) to go under conversion therapy. They demand that we “examine our preferences”. I will never want a relationship with a trans woman because they are men. I will never want a relationship with a man and I never have. The trans movement says that if a son likes dresses, he must in fact be a girl. Radfems simply say that he is a boy who likes dresses and that that is fine. The same is true for girls, but a little more serious. Teenage girls, including myself at the time, often hate our bodies. We go from a regular kid to a sexual object during puberty. The trans movement says that these uncomfortable feelings must be dysphoria and that you’re actually nonbinary or trans. No, you’re just a girl who is uncomfortable with society’s expectations, and that is completely normal. Note that dysphoria is a real and severe condition, but often fades after puberty (I believe the stat is 80% of the time it fades? Don’t quote me, I’m new here and I only run this blog casually). Those with gender dysphoria often benefit from talk therapy to help them understand the source of their feelings. I’m sure a radfem who faces dysphoria can tell you more. (Forgive me, Tumblr’s formatting is being stupid and any new paragraph I try to make is a million meters down)…. 2b. The LGB isn’t the “weird kids club”. It was made for those who experience same sex attraction. It originally had nothing to do with gender identity or level of sexual attraction. I, for example, am sex-repulsed. I consider myself asexual. But I am only in the LGB for my same sex attraction towards women. Straight aces are not in the LGB. 3. Oh goodness the brain sex argument… Everyone’s brains are different. The only sex difference is in size. Men have slightly larger brains because they have larger skulls. If anything, differences within the male sex should discredit the brain sex argument. There is nothing in your anatomy that makes you desire to be more feminine or more masculine. To suggest there is is sexist. It’s like when old philosophers would say that women are just “natural followers” and shit. (My god I hate this. You’re arguing with the wrong person…) 4. The statistics. All you TRAs love to hype up about trans women getting killed. It’s unfortunate that anyone dies. BUT, the vast majority of TWs killed were in prostitution and killed by their MALE johns. They are also killed because of homophobia. But it’s still male on male violence. Consider the millions of females aborted or murdered in China’s one child policy. Consider the hundreds of thousands mutilated all around the world because of FGM. Consider those who are killed by domestic violence. Consider those who get acid thrown on them. There are billions of dead women in history who were killed just for having the misfortune of being born female. 5. I do sympathize with your struggles. You are AFAB, yes? If I had been a little younger when all this transgender stuff kicked off, I would’ve wanted to transition myself. I definitely want to be a man sometimes. I feel for you how you feel you are in the wrong body. Believe me or don’t, but I get it. I am you, in a way. You may not be a lesbian or bisexual and don’t experience internalized homophobia or biphobia. Only straight males experience autogynophilia. From your descriptions, it seems like you are dissatisfied with how the world views you. You just wanna be a person, right? You just wanna be yourself and get the respect you deserve no matter your appearance or your sex. That is completely normal and understandable. Most women feel the way you do. Even “cis” women. We all just approach it differently.

nobody asked but i think hanso, brynn, and xandra from neopets’ comic “the faeries’ ruin” are queer | a 1.8k presentation i am presenting to my friends at an online party on the 19th, but you guys get early access because for some godforsaken reason, you like this content from me

Good evening class.

Last last time I attacked your dashboards with a long post, I discussed Neopets that would benefit from therapy. I’m sticking with my Neopets shtick but in a funkier Pride flavor. In this post, I will be discussing why the three main characters of Neopets’ “The Faeries Ruin” are queer. 

So what is “The Faeries Ruin?”

“The Faeries Ruin” was a Neopets plot that ran through January of 2011. Plots can affect the website's appearance, services, and gameplay, and this plot was most notable because it turned all the Faeries of Neopia to stone. 

Quick crash course on Neopets lore, for those of you who don’t know anything about it: Neopets are the main population of the planet of Neopia, but they share the world with other creatures as well. One of these creatures are Faeries, magical beings who can be benevolent or malevolent. Majority of them are good, and can be visited to receive gifts, abilities, new appearances, better stats, etc. Faeries are the most powerful creatures on Neopia. With the Faeries of Neopia turned to stone, all Faerie run services, from games to shops, were suspended because. Well. It’s hard to run a business when you’re stone. 

“The Faeries Ruin” had an accompanying quest to play through, items to collect, puzzles to solve, and most important to our discussion, is the accompanying comic to read.

“The Faeries Ruin” comic is 17 chapters plus an epilogue. You can read the synopsis on the slide, and the story follows Hanso, a thief, Brynn, a guard, and Xandra, a scholar, who are all investigating the curse put on the Faeries.

A lot happens in the comic. Really, a LOT, so I don’t have time to summarize it for you. If you’re curious, you can read the plot here, and I’ll explain plot stuff as it becomes relevant to our discussion, but what’s really important are the characters. 

These three in particular, Hanso, Brynn, and Xandra, are who I will be focusing on from the queer perspective.

But because I aim to be inclusive, before we dive into calling Neopets characters queer, we need a quick crash course in ‘queer’ definitions. 

This is just so that we’re all on the same page. (Also so that I can use the readings I got from the queer theory class I was in last semester.)

Alex Pilcher in the Introduction of “A Queer Little History of Art” gives the word “queer” three definitions. First is the simplest, the word “queer” can act as an umbrella term for anybody who is not straight or cisgendered. The second definition is “queer” as an identity in itself. Instead or in addition to using sexuality or gender labels, one can opt to identify as queer and that does away with any hierarchies or too small definitions that may bother other people. I, for example, am bisexual, asexual, and nonbinary. However, that’s kind of a mouthful, and sometimes I don’t want to explain every facet of my identity. So sometimes I just tell people I’m queer, and fuck them if that’s confusing, it feels good for me. The third definition of “queer” is what I will be referring to quite a lot of times in this discussion, “queer” as a deviation from the norm. This is a callback to the word’s more archaic use, meaning odd or strange. What is “queer” then is what goes beyond or resists against society’s expectations.

Queer Theory is a huuuuuuuge academic genre, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. But we’re on a schedule here, so let’s queer some goddamn Neopets.

First, we have Hanso. 

His Neopets species is an Ixi and he is a young rogue/thief. He knows Brynn because he’s a very shitty thief and he constantly gets captured by her. His personality is self centered and egocentric, but deep down, he has a heart of gold, even if his morals are a little skewed. 

Also I think he’s bisexual. Why? 

As a rogue/thief, he is outcasted by society, a type of queering from the norm. He is only accepted by those like him, which symbolically is parallel to how queer people often find other queer people to be with. Aside from Brynn, nobody trusts him. They think him to be a liar and a cheat, and this, I think, is parallel to the unsavory trope of the “untrustworthy bisexual.” Much the same way bisexuals are often told to “pick a side”, Hanso has both a desire for good and a desire for mischief, a duality that confuses other Neopets, and makes them wary of him.   

Hanso is bisexual. And he isn’t sorry about it.

Next up we have one of my early childhood crushes. Brynn.

Brynn is a Kougra, a feline like Neopets species. She is a guard/soldier from the land of Brightvale. She knows Hanso because she keeps catching him, he’s a terrible thief. Her personality is one dominated by courage and a duty to Neopia’s safety.

And I think she’s also bisexual, but more interesting to me her queer expression of masculinity.

Jack Halberstam, a transgender man, wrote a book called “Female Masculinities” prior to his transition (I mention this because I know a lot of you may be wondering why a man gets any say about women’s issues, but I think this is a special case and that his views are still valid.) Halberstam, in his book, posits the concept of masculinity divorced from maleness. What this means, in simplest terms, is that masculinity is not something inherently male, just predominantly male. A female masculinity is thus outside of the norm, and a unique and queer expression of gender.

Concepts related to masculinity are things like power and rebellion. Strength, force, will, that kind of stuff. When we remove these things from maleness and allow femaleness to have these concepts, one of the results is tomboyism. The phenomenon of tomboyism is when a girl, usually young, exhibits masculine qualities. The thing about tomboyism is that it is reluctantly permitted during childhood but less expected as one grows older, the assumption being that a woman will submit to the societal expectations of what a woman is “supposed to be.”

I cannot find any canon sources to say that sexism is a huge problem in Neopia, but gender roles are still present. While we don’t see Brynn’s childhood in “The Faeries Ruin”, it doesn’t take much to imagine that her peers would be surprised with her choice to join the Brightvale Guard, a traditionally male pursuit. And yet she does it. She works hard and becomes such a good soldier that she aids King Altador himself during the story, that King Altador trusts and respects her opinions. Brynn rebels against society’s standards and asserts her own power.

Her personality exudes masculinity as well. Throughout “The Faeries Ruin” she is often dominant over the course of investigation, taking initiative, sometimes omitting truths for the greater good, and generally holding her judgement in high regard. 

Her choices, especially in regards to her relationship with Hanso, is also something of note. Brynn is the one doing the catching and Hanso is the one being caught, an interesting subversion of expected gender roles. I will admit now that I have been withholding some information. Hanso, later in the plot of “The Faeries Ruin”, admits that he wanted to get caught by her as often as possible so that he would have an excuse to see her. Brynn did not know this, but I see it as a Hanso recognizing Brynn’s power and masculinity. I see it as a very romantic submission of Hanso to Brynn. 

So Brynn is bi, because I say so. And she expresses masculinity in a unique, queer, and female way.

Now, before we move onto the last character, Xandra, I need to talk to you guys about Brynn and Hanso’s relationship. I think it is very good, it was one of my first OTPs, and here’s three reasons why it’s a good ship.

Reason 1: They’re both queer, so like, it’s better than the usual M/F couple. Bi people have more genders they’re attracted to, so the person they do end up choosing had to be better than literally everybody else. We can rest assured both of them are good eggs that are compatible with each other.

Reason 2: Their relationship over the course of “The Faeries Ruin” is that of the “enemies to friends to lovers” trope. Which, HELLO? GOOD SHIT? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP? THE HOSTILITY SLOWLY GIVING WAY TO RESPECT? THE RESPECT TURNING INTO ADMIRATION? Your honor, it’s delicious.

Reason 3: This reason is an NSFW concept, so if you don’t wanna see that, just Ctrl+F to the phrase “This brings us to our last character, Xandra” to skip it. We good? Everybody continuing to read wants to see this? Okay.

BRYNN TOTALLY PEGS HANSO. Like, I don’t have any sources, but by this point in the presentation, I hope I’ve established myself as an expert authority, and I hope you just believe me. She has the sword, in this relationship. Both literally and metaphorically. She pegs him and her strap is huge.

This brings us to our last character, Xandra.

Xandra is a Xweetok and also a magic scholar. She studied under Fyora, the Faerie Queen, and helps Hanso and Brynn with their investigation of the faeries’ petrification. She’s a lesbian because I say so, but uhhhhhh…

She’s also evil. Towards the end of “The Faeries’ Ruin” it was revealed that Xandra was the one who petrified the faeries all along. So yeah, she’s evil, buuuuuuut she’s super queer about it. How? Well, the answer lies in her motives.

The reason why she petrified the faeries was because she wanted to start a new Neopia without them. She believed that the faeries were hoarding power instead of using it to truly help Neopians. She actively wanted to destroy not just the faeries, but a symbol of power and control that arguably rules the world she lives in. She criticizes against that which controls the social expectations, and this criticism and questioning benefits the marginalized, the queered from the norm. Her intention was to create a kind of utopia free from a governing body that holds all the power. That’s pretty damn queer.

Honestly, I’m a little pissed she was branded as evil for this, but it was revealed that when the faeries were petrified, their good magic was gone and left Neopia vulnerable to evil magic shadows and Xandra didn’t really care. So uh, she had good and radical queer motives, but she went a little bonkers with power. I still love her though. 

So, Xandra is pretty awesome, I hope she gets therapy then attends a Pride protest. She would totally be there reminding everybody that Pride started with riots. Also she loves women.

I was about to make a post on trans issues, but then I realized, it was October. And I never remember the date, so I looked it up, Oct 20th. I’m early, so this’ll go into drafts and be finished then, but still. God. Time flies.

5 full years on tumblr. It’s been a journey. I’m not leaving. If anything I might be more active? That’d be a fun post to go through my archive to see my active periods and stuff. Anyways.

I’ve got 428 post, 123 followers, 91 following, 40 drafts, and 7,168 likes. As you can see from my last post, I’ve posed eleven times in the past year. So not very active, but I am because my likes have gone up quite a lot. More of a lurker I guess.

Updated About Me:

My name is still Skylar, I think I’m going to keep that name. Though if I come out, I might try to get everyone to call me Sky. I’m now 19 years old, maybe trans? and still gay as fuck, though I also like using the term Queer. I am almost half way through my Junior year of college. The major is still Psychology with an aim at a wanna be Japanese Minor. It’s too late to head for it but I still wanna try. I’m back at U of L as of this fall semester. Partly online and partly in person due to covid and personal choices.

The colors I live by are still black and blue. I’m actually trying to stop drinking Sprite. I never drank it much to begin with but now it’s basically just water. As with painting, I actually threw out a bunch of gross old brushes and paint recently. The plan is to buy new stuff, as that was the main reason I didn’t paint, because I didn’t like the paint I was using. So hopefully new paint and ideas spark creativity during Christmas.

Still no social life. I’ve got a new job with better people and pay so that’s a plus.

My boyfriend still loves me, and when I go back home, I’ll have to ask for a special quote to put here. 

I’d like to think that I’m doing more healthily mentally. I’m a bit low on dysphoric but ED wise it’s not too awful. I think body images is an issue with dysphoria. 

But I guess I’m going to wrap things up. Something also from this past year before I leave, I started therapy. I think that’s a pretty major goal. I didn’t start it when I should have, but it’s fine. I did it. And still am. Go Me!

Uhh okay sure.

So the post was about how there are 3 things in media that are often perceived as queer-bating:

a) intentionally putting queer subtext in with no intention of ever making it canon,

b) the writers/directors/etc genuinely wanting queer characters but corporate overlords making them remove it, leading to leftover subtext, and 

c) the creators legit didn’t realize what they made would come across gay

and that the only one that is truly queer-bating is the first one.

I’m curious where other Stucky fans would think that ship falls on this scale. Because I think it probably started out as somewhere between b) and c), maybe a bit of queer coding but mostly just not realizing how gay the first two movies would come across. But then after Winter Soldier I think there is definitely an argument to be made that it devolved into straight up queer-bating.

The whole Civil War plot where Steve threw away his found family and happily committed international crimes to save Bucky. The fact that during promo for CW, the writers and directors constantly called Bucky the most important person in Steve’s universe and outright called their relationship “a love story” and called them “soulmates”. (Chris Evans did that as well, but he has no control over plots or scripts so he can’t be blamed for this.) In Infinity War, the fact that Bucky was the first to die in the snap and the Russos intentionally made the audience watch that happen from Steve’s POV. The fact that Stucky was deliberately inserted into the marketing for Endgame, with official Marvel ads including flashbacks of Steve and Bucky from earlier movies, painting Bucky as the person Steve missed the most. But then, in the actual movie, Steve spends his therapy sessions talking about the one person he lost who didn’t die in the snap, and he’s wistful for Peggy on their way to kill Thanos even though reversing the snap won’t bring her back, and he leaves Bucky at the end, literally right after getting him back, to go rekindle a heterosexual romance with a woman he kissed once almost a century ago.

That all feels to me like the textbook definition of queer-bating. They saw how the ship exploded after Winter Soldier (it is still, according to AO3 stats, the most popular MCU ship, by quite a large margin if I’m not mistaken.) They saw the ‘give Captain America a boyfriend’ hashtag. They knew it was popular and so they teased Stucky in interviews and promo, knowing full well that in Endgame Steve would barely think of Bucky at all and the entirety of their interaction was an 8 second conversation just before Steve leaves him forever.

So yeah like. I personally wasn’t expecting Stucky to become canon. But I have a hard time seeing how everything they did after Winter Soldier wasn’t intentional queer-bating  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’d be interested to know what other people think tho.
