Coming out to my mom a second time as a 33 year old nonbinary I would say was harder to explain than then me coming out at 3am to try and save my suicidal girlfriend... But I did it and it went well. I could die happy knowing my parter and my momma love me for who I am. Very grateful at this time.

I’m torn between wondering if calling panicking over having feelings for someone gay/bi/otherwise queer panic is some kind of misguided form of reclamation, or if people really don’t know it’s still a legitimate defense for hate crimes in many states.

I’m leaning toward the latter. I see it so much in a “haha so cute” sense that I hate to rain on people’s parade by coming in going “uhhh… this is actually the defense straight people use when they find out they person they hooked up with was in fact not het and/or cis so they murdered them. Or if such a person confesses feelings for them.”

There are movies about it (Boys Don’t Cry) and famous cases about it (the ambush talk show where a gay man confessed to his straight coworker, who was brought on under the premise a woman was confessing, and the straight man later killed him).

So every time I’m like… do y’all not know? Or are you reclaiming it? Plz say reclamation, even if that’s still a little fucked up cause those laws are still on many books.
