But there are so many girls out there being targeted by monsters, who feel so unsafe afterwards - I’d like them to see me killing the things that want to hurt them and feel safer themselves. Historical Asexuals/ Demisexuals:

Emily Brontë: Emily Brontë was a very private person and as such it’s impossible to be entirely certain of her sexual orientation. Some Brontë scholars believe she died a virgin, never having had physical relationships with men or women. However, most Brontë scholars think that the content of her novels would suggest she may have been asexual, but she was not aromantic.

J.M. Barrie: The man who wrote Peter Pan into existence, was reportedly asexual. His marriage was never consummated and ended in divorce when his wife cheated on him. Because of his relationship with his neighbor children, and the subject matter of his books, some speculated Barrie was prone to pedophilia. Those who knew him closely vehemently deny Barrie ever exhibited such behavior. Instead his lack of sexual relationships was more likely due to his asexuality.

George Bernard Shaw: Renowned playwright George Bernard Shaw was a man far more interested in intellect than sex. He never consummated his marriage (also at the request of his wife, Charlotte Frances Payne-Townshend) and was a virgin until 29. Shaw told friends he appreciated the ability of sex to produce “a celestial flood of emotion and exaltation” but only as it compared to the “conscious intellectual activity” he strove for with his work.

Isaac Newton: Isaac Newton’s supposed asexuality is based on his recorded behavior and lifestyle. He had strict religious views, never married, was obsessive in his scientific careers, and supposedly died a virgin. Whether he truly lacked sexual attraction or was simply too immersed in making massive scientific discoveries to have a sex life is unsure.

T.E. Lawrence: Tragically, T.E. Lawrence – a man immortalized in the film Lawrence of Arabia – was sexually assaulted while held prisoner during The Great War. His lack of sexual and romantic relationships in life were mostly attributed to this trauma but some scholars argue he may have been asexual. He had no documented relationships with men or women. Most notably, since it was the turn of the 20th century, Lawrence was known to be non-judgmental of homosexuals. His personal orientation may have motivated his tolerance.

Florence Nightingale: Interestingly, though “the Florence Nightingale effect” is a situation where a caregiver develops an attraction to the patient they are caring for, the effect’s namesake, Florence Nightingale, was likely asexual. The famous nurse never married and instead chose to devote her life entirely to her work. She even refused a marriage proposal from a suitor who had been pursuing her for years. Nightingale rarely discussed her personal life and the term “asexual” was not widely used at the time, but asexual activists and scholars strongly suspect she lacked sexual interest.

Nikola Tesla: Nikola Tesla, the revolutionary engineer who was instrumental in the invention of electricity, also lived a life of celibacy typical of asexuals. He showed very little interest in sexual relationships throughout his life, preferring to focus on science. Many asexuals describe their lack of attraction as a blessing allowing them sharp focus. Once again, we have a person who could have been too busy (and brilliant) to focus on relationships, but who’s asexuality likely allowed him to be busy (and brilliant). [Fun fact: I am actually related to ol’Nikola. Sometimes it’s nice to even think about someone in my family being asexual, because it makes me feel like we’d both be able to get along together when we get fixed in our little studies, research, and schemes ♥]

Frederic Chopin: Famed composer and pianist Frederic Chopin is supposed to also have been asexual. While he lived with writer George Sand, she noted in her biography that their connection was affectionate without being sexual. She described their affair as “eight years of maternal devotion,“ also noting, “He seemed to despise the courser side of human nature and…to fear to soil our love by further ecstasy.”Whether Chopin was uninterested in sex, or had reservations about consummating the relationship for other reasons, is unclear. Many scholars believe the famed pianist lacked sexual desire altogether.

John Ruskin: Victorian art critic John Ruskin was known to be particularly uninterested in sex. Though Ruskin was once married, he reportedly showed no interest in getting physical with his wife. Typical of other asexuals on this list, his marriage ended having never been consummated.

Young Adult Fiction/ Books about Asexuality (NOTE: Some of these are coming out later this year, August and September 2020):

[This features several different types of queer stories, from transexual freedom fighters, but also a very sweet asexual love story set in a seventies roller rink with a POC protagonist].

The Pride Guide: A Guide to Sexual and Social Health for LGBTQ Youth by Jo Lanford: Jo Langford offers a complete guide to sexual and social development, safety, and health for LGBTQ youth and those who love and support them. Written from a practical perspective, the author explores the realities of teen sexuality, particularly that of trans teens, and provides guidance and understanding for parents and kids alike. [Although this is a little rudimentary, I found it a great resource even in my twenties for someone coming out, or to slowly but carefully come out to those who may be uncomfortable or not understand asexuality, or not see it as a valid sexuality or lack thereof].

Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Katie Ormsbee: Natasha ‘Tash’ Zelenka has found herself and her amateur web series plucked from obscurity and thrust in the limelight. And who wouldn’t want fame and fortune? But along with the 40,000 new subscribers, the gushing tweets, and flashing Tumblr gifs, comes the pressure to deliver the best web series ever. As Tash struggles to combat the critics and her own doubts, she finds herself butting heads with her family and friends - the ones that helped make her show, Unhappy Families (a modern adaption of Anna Karenina, written by Tash’s eternal love Leo Tolstoy), what it is today. For a fortunate few it is just a way station until they can find their ways back to the worlds they do fit into; for others, it’s the least bleak choice in what may be a life-long exile. This unhappy ending for the students takes a terrifying turn when some of their number start turning up dead. A small group joins together in an attempt to expose the person committing these murders before it is too late to save the school, or even themselves.

The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality by Julie Sondra Decker: What if you weren’t sexually attracted to anyone?A growing number of people are identifying as asexual. They aren’t sexually attracted to anyone, and they consider it a sexual orientation—like gay, straight, or bisexual.Asexuality is the invisible orientation. Most people believe that “everyone” wants sex, that “everyone” understands what it means to be attracted to other people, and that “everyone” wants to date and mate. Not Your Backup (Sidekick Squad #3) by C.B. Lee: Emma Robledo has a few more responsibilities that the usual high school senior, but then again, she and her friends have left school to lead a fractured Resistance movement against a corrupt Heroes League of Heroes. Emma is the only member of a supercharged team without powers, and she isn’t always taken seriously. A natural leader, Emma is determined to win this battle, and when that’s done, get back to school. Immoral Code by Lillian Clark: Ocean’s 8 meets The Breakfast Club in this fast-paced, multi-perspective story about five teens determined to hack into one billionaire absentee father’s company to steal tuition money.For Nari, aka Narioka Diane, aka hacker digital alter ego “d0l0s,” it’s college and then a career at “one of the big ones,” like Google or Apple. Keagan, her sweet, sensitive boyfriend, is happy to follow her wherever she may lead. Reese is an ace/aro visual artist with plans to travel the world. Santiago is off to Stanford on a diving scholarship, with very real Olympic hopes. And Bellamy? Recent Reads: October 5, 2018

Happy October! Here’s a multifandom mish-mash, as usual. This list has some femslash, some podfic, four (4) Holmes variations, some History Boys (turns out I like the fic way more than the source material), and some Dirk Gently (despite doing a dedicated DGHDA list last month). I've recced some of these as one-offs, but it's nice to have them all in one place. Recs below--enjoy!

Holmes, Voiceless - @a-candle-for-sherlock - 5k, G, Holmes/Watson (ACD Sherlock Holmes) "On reading my stories, one might believe that Holmes and I have always been as we became, co-conspirators in everything. This was not at all the case. To begin with, I was a little in awe of him." No spoilers, but there's a line near the end of this fic that absolutely SLAYED me.

To know what's under the floor - beckaandzac, read by exmanhater - 4k, 21min, G, Charlie/Jo (Supernatural) "No one here is like me, Jo thinks, and she knows it’s what every eighteen year old on the planet thinks. And she also knows in her case it’s completely justified. But then she meets Charlie." A funny, sweet, slightly angsty sorta-AU starring Jo and Charlie as queer misfit college students.

My Heart Was Wrapped Up In Clover (The Night I Looked At You) - @dont-offend-the-bees 6k, T, Scripps/Posner (History Boys) "In which twenty years have passed, and it might even be long enough for Scripps and Posner to get their act together." Wonderful banter, and a lovely balance of regret and hopefulness.

The Only Way Out is Through (Or: How to be Almost, Mostly, Okay Again) - electricteatime | @kieren-fucking-walker - WIP, T, Dirk/Todd (DGHDA) "Even when he knows the truth somewhere deep inside it doesn’t mean he wants to acknowledge it. But, like all things, it’s only a matter of time." Fics in which Dirk works through his trauma are irresistible to me, and nobody does 'em like electricteatime.

A glimpse of something Holy, (where it wasn't meant to be.) - electricteatime - 610 words, G, Scripps/Posner (History Boys) "A look at longing, loss, and love. Two boys who keep looking, until finally something is found. A poem for some poetry loving nerds." A poem fic, and for this pairing, I'm here for it. Also, this is the second fic on this list to contain a devastatingly perfect turn of phrase.

For life's not a paragraph - @firstaudrina - 6k, M, Scripps/Posner (History Boys) "In the dying world I come from, quotation is a national vice. (Waugh)" The best kind of poignant.

By Any Other Name - Gray Cardinal (Gray_Cardinal) - 1k, G, Enola & Mycroft (Enola Holmes) "Sometime in the year since Enola Holmes reconciled with her brothers, Mycroft has clearly found time to familiarize himself with the language of flowers." The Enola Holmes books are absolutely my favorite Holmesian spinoff, and I love how this fic captures the reconciliation and understanding between her and Mycroft.

Lovely, Dark, and Deep - @hiddenlacuna - 3k, M, Sherlock/John, (BBC Sherlock AU) "'I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country, or that I must make a complete alteration in my style of living.' - Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet. 'Upon consideration, as both choices before me were likely to require a similar amount of discomfort, I chose the former alternative.' - HiddenLacuna." Unusual, atmospheric, gorgeous.

The Part That Matters - @irisbleufic, WIP, E, Dirk/Todd (DGHDA) “'Find a boy?' Todd asked. 'Any boy? Would she be glad to know you found me?'” Y'all, irisbleufic is killin' it with this fun, satisfying fix-it fic.

March of the Degenerates - lotus_lizzy - 1k, T, Harry/Draco (HP) "An excerpt from Harry Potter's speech in 2003 during The March of the Degenerates." Short, defiant, memorable.

The Librarians of Baker Street - @missdaviswrites - 9k, E, Sherlock/John (BBC SherlockAU) "Sherlock is a cataloguer who's forced to work the reference desk once a week. Which he hates. Or at least, he used to hate it, until the library hired a new reference librarian. Guess who?" As a librarian, I'm very picky about library AUs, but from the moment I read "Sherlock is a cataloguer," I trusted this one.

Dearly Beloved - @mistyzeo - 20k, M, Holmes/Watson (ACD Sherlock Holmes) "CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE. This is to certify that on this TWENTY FIRST day of APRIL, 1896, DR JOHN H. WATSON, physician, 44, and MR SHERLOCK S. HOLMES, private detective, 42, of 221B BAKER STREET, LONDON were united in holy matrimony." This fic is a damn delight – it’s funny, charmingly anachronistic, and it relishes the accidental marriage trope.

Wind, Sand, Devotion - montparnasse, read by fire_juggler - 6k, 53min, T, Julie/Maddie (Code Name Verity) "Empty spaces want for filling, and Maddie Brodatt is overflowing." Code Name Verity is one of a VERY few books that made me cry, and this fic (as well as fire_juggler's beautiful performance) really captures the bravery and poignancy of the source material.

The Always Puzzle - @oldshrewsburyian - 6k, T, Joan & Sherlock (Elementary) "In which our intrepid consulting detectives experience tribulations, and emerge from them. There is opera. There are canon references. There is possibly an intolerable deal of sentiment." It’s the Joan & Sherlock hurt/comfort story that I never knew my heart needed! It’s also smart, moving, closely observed, AND it nails the dynamic of their partnership.

cross my heart (and hope to die) - @oneprotagonistshort - 3k, T, Dirk/Todd (DGHDA) "Dirk never understood why Todd always got mad at him after near-death experiences." I love this fic's depiction of these protective, secretly-soft idiots. There's also a joke in here that made me cackle like an idiot :)

Etta Candy's Last Stand - sanguinity - 2k, T, Etta/Diana (Wonder Woman film) "This is the way Etta is going to die: trapped between a bed and Diana Prince’s breasts." Bless Etta Candy and her goofy, awkward, romantic heart.

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want - surprisinglyOK | @holisticdirkmuppet - 25k, T, Scripps/Posner (History Boys) "Scripps and Posner search for meaning in their life after sixth form, and end up finding each other." Well-characterized, emotive, and quietly cathartic.

Beyond Belief - thingswithwings - 14k, E, Peggy/Diana, (Wonder Woman & Agent Carter crossover) "Diana finds her for the first time in 1947, underneath a rather heavy pile of fallen masonry." Camaraderie (and sex) between two badass women.

Celebrate the Me Yet To Come - Vera (Vera_DragonMuse), read by @revolutionaryjo - 6k, 37min, M, Jillian/Erin (Ghostbusters 2016) "She is deeply strange and strangely deep. She looks in the void and the void blinks first. This is how Jillian Holtzman makes herself." Holtzmann is such a fantastically odd character, it's so enjoyable to dig into her past and her passions, especially when interpreted by RevolutionaryJo.

Gay fanfiction takes over the internet in an empowering representation movement

Queer people are often excluded from mainstream media, except when used as a comic device. Confronted with constant erasure, stereotypical portrayals, and damaging tropes, the queer entertainment consumer often feels alienated. Growing up, I always found it hard to enjoy the typical high school romance series and the dramatic love stories in films and books. I was unable to find people like me portrayed on media and, when they did appear, they were used as the butt of an offensive joke. However, surfing the web, I discovered something astonishing: tired of waiting for good representation, LGBT+ folks had made a space for themselves in fandoms, pushing their own stories and identities into mainstream media by publishing fanfiction.

Nowadays, the internet has become the perfect place for thousands of fans to write and read stories that offer a new take on the shows, books, and movies they love. From my own experience, I can tell that the number of LGBT+ people in these communities is astonishing. While there have been few efforts to explore its demographics, a 2013 survey for users of Archive of Our Own (AO3) found that 62.0% of fanfiction writers were not heterosexual. Furthermore, 36.0% respondents identified as genderqueer. Most of them defy heteronormativity by developing male/male and female/female pairings. Who is to say Captain America and Bucky cannot make a good couple?

Fanfiction has an enormous significance in the lives of LGBT+ people. When I discovered I was not straight, I started to realize, painfully, how straight couples dominated all media. Therefore, when I encountered queer fanfiction, I felt as though I had found something I desperately needed. I was a big fan of the Harry Potter books, so, while exploring lore on the web, I stumbled with Harry/Draco fanfiction. Fascinated, I went over tens of fanfics in a few days’ time. They were all the classic high school romantic comedy story, but with magic and two guys in love. It felt right, more so than any straight romance I had read. It became a way to explore my identity and accept myself.

My experience as a young queer reader is not unique. Popular fanfics involving same-sex couples, like Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart in the Hetalia fandom have been read by thousands of people who do not feel adequately represented anywhere else. Often, these stories are also written by LGBT+ authors, who are constantly introducing themes related to their struggles in an empowering gesture. Whenever I get disappointed by the lack of LGBT+ representation in a show or book, I can turn to the fans in AO3, Fanfiction.net, Tumblr and LiveJournal for more inclusive stories. In this way, fanfiction communities have become safe spaces in which queer people can explore and write about their identities and struggles

Recently, when looking for fanfiction for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, I found a breath-taking one-chapter fanfic by user Evie Thameskeepey on AO3 called A Prince, Waiting Far Beyond the Sand Dunes. On it, I found more diversity than in most books published nowadays. It included disabled, genderfluid, transgender, pansexual and non-white characters, and none of their identities was a main plot point. That is the kind of casual representation we, as LGBT+ people, are looking for. While we wait for it, we will keep on reading and writing fanfiction. I would like to close by citing author Jo Chiang: “People write fanfiction partly out of love, but also partly out of a deep dissatisfaction with what is available”.
