She would best the competition and embarrass the other attendants. She would knock her opponent from his horse, swing from the saddle, and kneel at Jo’s feet. She would take her hand and whisk her away to a future that was entirely her own.

a lot of folks hate me right now for being a non-famous queer who did well in a silly poll that was always meant to be kinda goofy, but if you come to The Bowery Vault in Nashville this Monday at 7pm, maybe we can work it out on the remix 🤝
This is my entry for the zine Devilblood Symphony. Please check out the zine, it's full of other stories by extremely talented folk!! It can be downloaded for free here
Diversity in queer representation matters, because I’m demiromantic and demisexual—not quite foreign identities, especially now that Chappell Roan has come out as demisexual—but before people started talking about her news, I can think of very few instances where my identity or others like it were openly discussed. Variations on the rainbow spectrum seem to be shunted aside pretty often if they don’t conform to the basic types of “one-way gay,” “no romance or sex at all,” or “still figuring it out” tropes, in real life. I’ve seen myself in characters like Jo March, Neil Josten, and even the classic Sherlock Holmes over the years, and I love them for it. But when it comes to translating these more complex types of love into real-life conversations, people often forget why they’re trying. If I hadn’t seen anyone like me in books growing up, I wouldn’t know it was an option to try anything other than force a crush on another kid, or as an early teen, maybe I would have accepted that I’d never find meaningful relationships. Diversity in queer representation matters, because the real people behind those queer identities matter. Create something that reflects the world, and the world you reached will thank you for it.
Sometimes I just stop and think how weird it is that people are so heated over modern readers generally reading "confirmed bachelor" as gay when that is literally what contemporary readers at the time of publication were also doing??? If a man was a confirmed bachelor, they generally just assumed he was gay. It was a specific euphemism for queerness at the time. Like why do you think those words existed? A specific label for a specific type of man? Like, come on, readers, you're most likely not stupid, and queer folks have been included in narratives from the dawn of time (Epic of Gilgamesh, anyone?). Just because it was illegal or unconventional does not mean the author didn't include queer characters and narratives. It just meant including them in subtler, more creative ways that couldn't be fucking prosecuted, but it's good to know that you are the physical embodiment of kakhi walls and prison decor so I'm spared the bother of wasting my own valuable time engaging with you.
