Happy (early) Halloween! Here are some photos of the from my home-shoot of Lenore from Castlevania - If you know me personally, I love ALL things Vampire and the Castlevania games and series is no exception. I was very apprehensive and worried about how the photos would turn out due to feeling incredibly sick in the stomach from a bug to imposter syndrome telling me I’m not a professional and to give up right then and there. Regardless, I’m very happy with how some of the photos turned out! While I know the cosplay is not 110% accurate and it was made up with things I had already laying around the house, I’m still proud of myself for bringing a character I love to life after my long hiatus from cosplaying all together. I’m glad my brains creativity can physically be shown. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! My heart can’t tolerate unnecessary hate..
(P.S. ~ I have heaps of photos from the shoot so if you wanna see more please let me know!)

Book Carmilla vs Adaptations (SPOILERS)
Here are a few 'interesting' adaptations. I like some of them for their own merits, but mostly dislike them as Carmilla adaptations for the below reasons, with some notable exceptions: Vampyr: The Dream of Allan Gray (1932 film): The first Carmilla inspired movie, although it keeps almost NOTHING from the novella except 'female vampire'. In this case, a creepy old lady rather than a charming young lesbian. This is a really moody, slow, acid trip of a film though, a treat for fans of vintage vampire film. (3/10) Hammer Karnstein Trilogy: The Vampire Lovers is the gayest and most book-accurate. Carmilla still kisses/seduces men before killing them, boo. The second one her identically-named reincarnation is blonde and has sex with / falls in love with a man booooooo. She's not in the third one at all. It's all very 70's and nowhere near queer enough, but at least we got the incomparable Ingrid Pitt in the first movie. 5/10. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: 'Carmilla' shows up as a surprise third act villain. She's an elegant and imposing vampire queen with a castle called "Cjethe" and the Vampire King offed her previously for being A Bit Too Extra. She's... Bathory. She's Elizabeth Bathory, right down to the name of her historical castle, the elaborate gowns and the blood-bathing. Bathory in Castlevania Nocturne even looks a lot like this one. Cool scary vampire lady, but Carmilla In Name Only. 4/10 Castlevania (Games): She's fine here, but mostly just kind of a big Dracula groupie like most of the other non-Dracula vampires. Often depicting as a flying skull or mask crying bloody tears, with optional succubus-like figure reclining on top of it. Cool. Rondo of Blood has her appear together with a ninja vampire Laura with bunny ears because why the hell not. 6/10 Castlevania (Netflix show): Baddass, angry Karen. She's amazing in the first season when she's scheming against Dracula, but after that she just sort of sits on her butt sipping wine and griping about men for a whole season until Isaac storms her castle. A cool character but not a great Carmilla, because Carmilla for me is defined by how much she loves women, not how much she hates men. Still amazing voice work by Jaime Murray though and her last stand was insanely baddass. 7/10
Carmilla Web Series / Movie: My favorite adaptation. It's obviously playing waaaay fast and loose with the canon and reframing her as a charming antihero in a zany urban fantasy, but there's deep current of love for the source material, especially in the movie. Natasha Negovanlis has charisma off the charts and the Hollstein romance is adorable. This Carmilla might be a black-leather-wearing snarky millenial goth with a Canadian accent, but as the show goes on it peels back layer after layer of the romantic, poetic, wistful, world-weary immortal hinted at by the novella. This show redeems LeFanu's lovelorn villain in all the best ways. 10/10. 2019 movie / Styria movie: I still haven't seen these, have heard good things about the gothic cinematography on the most recent one but not good things about the rest of it. The trailer looked moody and pretty though, I may watch it at some point.

Tumblr media
With a towel wrapped around your body and your hair damp, you leave the bathroom to dress for the day after your morning bath. Adrian had been in your room when you left but now he was nowhere to be found. You think little of it and assume he must be in the kitchen making breakfast. He always insists on caring for you, especially your health, with recipes from his childhood that he learned either from his perch on his mother’s hip or from stretching up on his toes so that he could watch her over the kitchen counter.
You smile to yourself when you picture it: this tiny little boy with all his blond hair following his mother around this colossal castle like her shadow. Based on the man you know him now to be, you can only imagine that Adrian was the sweetest little boy.
How could that boy have grown to suffer so much?
This question crosses your mind when you also find the kitchen empty, no sign of Adrian having been there at all. He wouldn’t go to the Hold or out foraging without telling you. Perhaps he had gone to one of the lower levels of the castle to the cool room in order to get some ingredients to cook with? Upon checking there you also found no traces of your lover.
You begin to grow increasingly more worried about his whereabouts. When Sypha moved the castle and in the battle that followed, many of the windows were shattered. You and Alucard have been doing your best to board them up but Dracula’s Castle was immensely big and there were still many opening that you#ve yet to seal up. Had a night creature got in somewhere? Is Alucard now in some room of the castle fighting the beast or beasts? Your heart begins to anxiously flutter in your chest.
So far, the creatures that you have encountered post-battle have all been drawn to Dracula’s death site and so that is where you go. Despite Dracula being dead and his war being quashed, you know that you’re not out of the woods yet: night creatures from his army still roam freely, Dracula’s court is in disarray and has become a breeding ground for political turmoil – especially when considering how you’ve already heard talk that the four Queens of Styria are already on some mission to create their own empire. You can’t settle, you can’t give yourself a moment to relax when there’s windows to board up, the Belmont Hold to repair, food to find, rooms to clean and your lover is missing.
As you begin approaching Adrian’s childhood bedroom, the faint sounds of sobbing grow louder and louder until eventually you’re standing in the doorway. Adrian’s head is in his hands, blonde tresses falling around him like a curtain to hide his pain from the world while he curls up on the floor at the foot of the broken bed. The floor is scorched from the wake that his father’s death left behind; naught but a wedding ring is left behind.
Whether Adrian hears, smells or senses you, you have no clue – you just know that his dhampir senses are far superior to yours – but when he looks up, the whites of his eyes are a milky pink with the bloody tears that are staining cursed rivers down his cheeks. His thick blond lashes are clumped with the half-dried blood which tells you that he’s likely been here and crying since you first got into your bath this morning. But you can’t bear to simply stand there and watch him suffer.
You’re quick to join him on the floor, kneeling by his side and wrapping your arms around him, feeling his face bury into your shoulder and stain your fresh shirt with his bloody tears but you couldn’t care less about that. One of your hands comes up to caress his golden hair, nails lightly scratching over his scalp in a comforting manner as you hush him and press soft kisses to the side of his head, gently rocking him in your arms as he clings to you. He holds you so tight that it’s rather uncomfortable but you don’t say a word because your comfort currently doesn’t matter to you in the slightest. It’s only once that his sobs have calmed down to ragged breaths and sniffles do you finally pull away. You cup his face in your hands, thumbs first smoothing over sharp cheekbones before they swipe under his eyes to begin smearing away his tears. You first softly kiss his forehead and then his mouth, resting your head against his as you breathe slowly and steadily in the hope that he’ll mimic you and it’ll help him calm down sooner.
“I killed him…” He breathes out, words so quiet as though he can hear God damning him a thousand times over for his sin.
“My love… he was already gone. His heart died the day your mother was taken from this world. He had lost his mind and so many others would have died if not for what you did. Wherever he is now, I’m sure that your mother is in his arms and he finally feels whole again. You don’t deserve to carry the weight of this burden alone, you should have come to me…” You wipe more tears from his face, using the back of your hand to dash away the large collection of them upon the bottom of his chin. “Being in this room won’t help you. Why don’t we go and make breakfast and then we can go for a walk, hm? We can find mushrooms, fish, and find somewhere nice to just sit and cuddle for a while when the sun comes out in the afternoon… What do you say?” You ask him as you tuck some of his hair behind his ears. He nods as you cup his face in your hands and he then leans his forehead upon your shoulder.
“Thank you…” He says softly, “I… I have no clue what man I would be all alone in this place if I didn’t have you by my side.” He kisses your collar and you help him to his feet, hoping that a change of setting will make him feel better.

Do you think the world will ever be ready for an in depth character analysis of Carmilla, Queen of Styria from Netflix’s Castlevania?
Because I could give one, a lengthy one, but I don’t feel like it would be heard, very sad very unfortunate

Finished S1 of Castlevania Nocturne! I gotta say, that one vampire wife of the Marquis who kept his head around was the funniest character in the entire show so far.
In all seriousness, Alucard!!! I was wondering when he'd show up and by the time he did, I'd completely forgotten and thought it was Olrox who saved Richter from Drolta! Speaking of Drolta, she dresses very similar to the Succubus from Symphony of the Night, and even has a similar attack where she spreads out her wings, and sharp tendrils emerge from them; Plus with Alucard being the one to kill her, I'm just gonna treat her as the Succubus. RIP Queen you were a good one.
Does anyone else think Emmanuel is Shaft? He looks like Shaft, he's an evil priest, he's working for an evil vampire, him being human makes him necessary to pull souls from hell. That forgemaster contraption kinda reminds me of that weird orb-thing his ghost fights with in Symphony of the Night...
Speaking of that! Olrox muses on the demon that Emmanuel made a deal with to create that machine, and because of its creator, it's indestructible. Could this be pointing towards Galamoth as the final enemy of the show; He's the hardest boss of Symphony of the Night, Alucard has just shown up, and the two technically fought in... Kid Dracula. Where he was also the final boss for Alucard. The demon might just be Death, but then he's described as an elemental spirit.
I'm also curious as to how Edouard's story will turn out! Between him and Jacques and the Night Creature with a suspicious amount of mouths (as Bathory noted), the show seems to be going back to the whole idea of Night Creatures remembering their humanity and being rehabilitated. Which just begs the question of what happened to Isaac's kingdom of Styria, meant to be a place for Night Creatures to heal? Will we see that come back for Edouard? Isaac was once a slave himself, just as Annette was, so seeing all three come together would be wonderful! It's poetic, as Night Creatures are literally dehumanized slaves, so seeing Isaac, as well as Edouard (someone who helped liberate slaves) resonate with them works.
I wonder if we'll see the Moth Princess from Bloodlines; She's the penultimate boss, and Bathory had her starring role in that game. She looks human enough, but she's probably a vampire, so it'd be easy to adapt her as another lieutenant, especially in the wake of Drolta's death.
DAYUM Olrox and Mizrak! Firstly I'm glad they made Olrox turn into a green reptile monster like in the games... I was joking about the more comfortable place to meet being a bed, but holy shit it actually happened. I love all the references to Olrox's game lore, like his skulls and floating around... Here's hoping we get to see him dramatically unfold his legs in a chair, and then stand up!
I had a lot of fun; Richter was great, Maria was adorable and she is my precious child and I love her so much!!! I love her turtle and I hope we get to see her summon a whole-ass dragon as her most powerful spell, something like that.
I wonder how Emmanuel will go from here, if he's meant to be Shaft; Will he dive into full villainy, or will he be like Isaac, in that his show counterpart will have a happier ending? As Tera said, Emmanuel got his ram; Could it lead to him developing a messiah complex, thinking God rewarded him for his faith? Or will he know better? If he's Shaft, I better see him throw some... *snrk*... balls.
And did anyone else find the Night Creatures in this season to be particularly horny? Like that one moth girl who looks like a monsterfucker's OC, I mean I'm not complaining! Is this just a creative decision by the animators or does Emmanuel have anything he wants to share with the class... It all started with Abel it seems.
AND JUSTE!!! I managed to guess it; The white hair always made me wonder how Juste might be adapted, hypothetically, so it seems the show just portrays him as an old man for that! When he took Richter's whip, I had my suspicions and made the hair connection, it was wonderful... And they referenced Lydie and Maxim!!! Unfortunately it was yet another tragic ending for a Belmont... Man, what happened to the previous season's ending suggesting a happier route, only for us to go back to a "Last of the Belmonts" situation??? At least we got a Sypha shout out!
One more thing I just remembered; Annette's favorite color is Green. I believe that's a reference to her sometimes being depicted with a green dress in the source material? And in-universe, might reference Edouard... I love the connection between Annette's manipulation of metal, and her whole thing of banishing the demonic machine; Here's hoping she gets to pull it off!
All in all, I'm excited to see how things go in the second season! Which will really suck waiting for, but that's the price for quality I'm afraid. Ethical quality at least. But I gotta wait, what other choice do I have? Here's looking forward to how Alucard interacts with yet another Belmont... When Richter almost drank, I could just SEE him become Trevor again and I bet Alucard felt a chill down his spine for some reason.

"I'm nothing but ambition:
I'm a queen.
This world belongs to me,
because the likes of you never knew what to do with it!"
Carmilla of Styria
The apathy and indecision of the rest,
so pathetic, so weak in comparison...
I am fit to lead
because nobody else has even attempted to show a new way.

Visenya at 13, hearing Aurelian’s full title for the first time: Ugh that’s so obnoxious, why would anyone want to be called something so ostentatious? I would never punish my son or the pages by making him have some long puffed up mama
Visenya at age 20, returning to the Spring Court for the first time in three years: Please use my son’s full title; His Exalted Highness, Crown Prince Theomore, heir to the throne of the Autumn Court and son of the Noble and Ancient House de Lioncourt
Visenya’s own title as High Queen is Her Exalted Majesty Visenya Astraea Regina of the Noble and Ancient House de Lioncourt, High Queen of the Autumn Court; which is obviously a mouthful so she shouldn’t be complaining but girl does love to brag
And yes Aurelian’s title was the same as Theomore’s back when he was Crown Prince
And yes, her naming her son Theomore is a spoiler
Please Riley, as someone who actually lives in a kingdom with a whole-ass king, I can tell you that that isn't a mouthful of a full name.
*My* King's full name (titles included) is: His majesty Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbon y Grecia (aka Felipe VI of Spain), King of Spain, Castilla, Leon, Aragon Navarra, Granada, Jerusalem, Toledo, the Two Sicilies, Valencia, Galicia, Mallorca, Menorca, Sevilla, Sardinia, Cordoba, Murcia, Jaen, the Algarves, Algeciras, Gibraltar, the Canary Islands, the East and West Indies, the 'Isles and Lands of the Oceanic Sea', Hungary, Dalmatia and Croatia; Archduke of Austria; Duke of Burgundy, Brabant, Milan, Athens, Neopatras, Limburg, Lotharingia, Luxembourg, Gelderland, Styria, Carniola, Carinthia and Württemberg; Count of Habsburg, Flanders, the Tyrol, the Rousillon, Barcelona, Artois, Hainaut, Namur, Gorizia, Ferrette, Kyburg and Goceano; Count Palatine of Borgoña; Lord of Vizcaya, Molina, Salins-les-Bains, Mechelen, Slovenia, Pordenone and Tripoli; Landgrave of Alsace; Prince of Swabia; Marquis of Oristano; Margrave of the Holy Roman Empire and Burgau; Captain General of the Armed Forces; and I'll stop now but there are MORE
Because we have a parliamentary monarchy many of those titles hold no power or are merely symbolic (literally like the king himself because he does no-thing) and are reminiscent of the time we were the Spanish empire and total pieces of shit, but I do urge you to add more titles to your ocs lol

Behold! The Queen of all time!
(And somehow Lady Pussy Sun manages to be even more one dimensional)
youtube
youtube
What kills me about this whole monologue is the setup:
Lenore: Please, would Dracula have kept [Hector] around in his own castle if he were that dangerous? Carmilla: *sighs* I would have liked that castle.
They were just talking about Hector, about him stalling and Carmilla suspecting him of being devious (and I would love to know how Carmilla grew to see Hector as suspicious and capable of killing, when she hasn't interacted with him on screen since the beginning of S3 when he was a pathetic sack of flesh) and Lenore "protecting" him by calling him "too simple" (déjà vu), a pretty important conversation for Carmilla because it has been six weeks and this asshole is making a fool out of the entire Council by roaming around her home without doing what he was raped hired to do (and Striga had mentioned in S3 that they couldn't afford to waste time as they had to take advantage of the chaos in the region before the humans reconquered it)... then Lenore just happens to mention the castle when it wasn't even the main subject of her sentence, and Carmilla immediately forgets all about the Hector issue because she just has to rant about her desire to conquer all?
absolutely peak dialogue. flows just as smoothly as chunks of concrete through a tube. i can see why this show is so praised for its writing.
I remember a post I read ages ago, about how Carmilla's insanity speedrun arc devalues the other sisters. In S2, she was pretty much the only ruler of Styria: the others weren't created yet, and she was written as someone who had to burden her trauma all alone. Then S3 introduces this tight-knit group of besties, which genuinely respect and admire Carmilla for being the "spark". Then in S4 Carmilla somehow loses her mind in one fell swoop because the others were too busy to check on her, reverts back to the lonely traumatized woman who fell prey to her own hatred and thirst for power, and the other three decide to turn their back on her with barely any hesitation. You could honestly cut all three sisters and fuse Carmilla with Lenore, and the story would be organically better. I honestly don't know if it looks worse when you watch everything in one go or having to wait one year for this mess.
On top of this, it's yet another instance of show don't tell. Carmilla just tells us about her trauma. "The first part of my life was men taking things from me," this is a chilling line with all sorts of terrible implications, and it's just thrown there without any care or pathos. Because the focus is not on her motivations that are supposed to give her depth: it's to show how insane she is, to suddenly kick her back into main villain position after she twiddled her thumbs for a whole season, and to justify poor widdle Lenore being scared of her, because hey, she's the "good" vampire, and aww she was lied to just like Hector, aren't they true soulmates, isn't this poetic cinema?
When you boil the Styria subplot down, it really is all about that damn woman, and screw everyone else, isn't it.
I said in one post that if I were to rewrite Carmilla, I'd put more emphasis on the fear that pervades her and drives her to react to the world with rage, mistrust and desire to protect herself. I cannot take Carmilla seriously the way she was written. She has the blueprints to be a compelling antagonist and representation of a woman who reacts to her trauma in an "unappealing" way without being woobiefied (and I do seriously appreciate it), but with scenes like this, she really only comes off as the scornful parody of a radfem written by a man that is absolutely not feminist in the slightest.
Oh, and I'll just mention this here:
"Bloody women," they said. "Let them die," they said.
For a setting so inspired by Berserk, and that has long dialogues of low-class men talking about fucking animals, there is a distinct lack of misogyny on screen. Not only the only flashback we get of Carmilla's past shows the day she killed her master and we don't get to see her "nightmares", which means we are not privy to the details of what drove her to be so hateful, we never see any men actually look down on Carmilla for being a woman in power: even Godbrand may be a bit of a lecherous pig, but seems to respect her enough as a person. Again, this cheapens her misandry. I can't take her seriously. She's just ranting that MEN BAD and I'm supposed to think she's cool for it.

Princess Mihaela of Styria
– Born May 29, 1453. The very same day of the fall of Constantinople
– Daugther of Count Moritz Karnstein, Queen Carmilla’s cousin, and Lady Catherine Arpad, the last descendant of a fallen Hungarian dynasty
– Her mother died at childbirth, and her father took his own life afterwards, so she was taken by Carmilla, who named her princess and heir of Styria
– Carmilla was far from a mother to Mihaela, the Queen took her in thinking of the advantages of having a dhampir in her court, since Dracula had his own, but Lenore loved the baby from day one
– When Mihaela was still a child, Dracula arranged so his son could meet her, the only other person of his species, so he would feel less lonely
– The children became friends really quickly and started to exchanged letters
– Years later, when Dracula defeated the Ottomans, a ball was hosted in his castle. That night, Mihaela and Adrian realized they have been in love for years
– An year after the ball, Mihaela and Adrian got married
You can ready the story on ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49552465/chapters/125063038
