Although recreational musketfire had always seemed wasteful to Ben, he found himself restless that afternoon, and thus, had fetched his old fowling piece to aid as a form of distraction. His thoughts were racing, and not even his beloved books and lesson plans could draw such horrors to a close.

Aiming towards a makeshift target, Ben squeezed one eye shut, leveled his breathing, and then fired off a round with a successful mark.

“You’re really good at that.”

He jerked at the sudden compliment, stunned, before rotating about in search of his intruder. Upon finding that it was only a woman, he breathed a soft, disbelieving laugh before setting aside his musket. Thank God he hadn't been in the middle of reloading...

"Madam, forgive me, but has no one ever advised you to never sneak up on a man wielding a weapon? I could have shot you..." Appraising her with caution, he added, "I'm afraid that with the w.ar complete, some of us still feel the need to practice...almost as if we may be called upon at any given moment to do our duty. As part of the fairer s.ex, I pray that you have been spared of such horrors."

Awkwardly, he glanced between the woman and the target before asking, "Are you lost? I don't see many travelers in these parts, and you appear far too nicely dressed for a stroll...are you in need of assistance?"

The King reels back, taken by this statement.

Overall, he believes he has a heart. Physically. He has to own one somewhere in the cage that holds eternal life, or at the very least conscious life. If he did not, he could not be standing here in front of her, the picture of duty, beholding an entire country in their vows; responsibility embroidered into the stitched jewels underlay within the crown.

He is almost speechless.

It takes him a moment, a breath, and a momentary glance up at Venus. He closes his eyes, and finds an inner struggle to stay and refuse to retire to his observatory. A neutral expression meets hers once he has realigned, and he sighs, not discontentedly, or annoyed, breathes himself back into existence here before Charlotte.

‘And I do not understand where you believe my love exists, for if there is no heart, there can be none. And yet, day by day I find myself further and further traveled on the path of undefying, pitiful love for you.’

it  is  rare  to  hear  such  words  that  echo  his  own  sentiment  regarding  love  from  the  queen.  it's  a  sentiment  that  someone  of  his  age  might  have  taken  after  centuries  of  dissapointment,  not  the  queen  who  is  helping  lead  up  a  country  through  thick  and  thin.  "do  not  dispair,  your  majesty.  I  have  learned  that  sometimes,  just  because  love  is  all  of  those  things.  .  .it's  still  worth  fighting  of.  when  it  comes  to  the  right  person."  when  the  right  person  arrives,  even  if  one  will  get  their  heart  broken,  klaus  understood.  it  had  not  stopped  him  from  falling  in  love  through  the  centuries.

Whatever Violet had expected the Queen to say to her, it assuredly had not been that, lips parting in stunned surprise as she wondered if this was perhaps a practical joke of some kind. Why on earth would Queen Charlotte wish for little Violet Ledger to be a lady-in-waiting?

"I- Well, I..." Say something, Violet. "I would be honoured, Your Majesty. But... I do not think that I am properly trained."

Sitting down for tea, she has continuously grown closer with the Queen. They both share that they are not from England, Mingxia was raised in France. Their titles were inherited, not bestowed upon by the Dowager Princess upon Charlotte's marriage to King George. Sharing the frustrations of the English customs, it brought them closer together. She has not forgotten the ways that the Ton has treated her, speaking English extra slow and loud as to think that she does not speak the language herself. Sometimes out of spite, she speaks in French to them. Confuse them more.

"I must say, the mind games that the Ton plays are surely none that I have ever read in any military strategy book." Mingxia said as she took a gentle sip of her tea. "They care not that I am a master of an instrument from my mother's homeland, only the pianoforte. And...the English are only interested in English tea and care not for the Chinese tea that my mother has taught me to prepare." Taking another sip of tea, she let out a sigh and set the cup and saucer down on the table.

"My apologies, Your Majesty. My...my anger escaped my head."

The feeling of something tugging at his ginger curls caught his attention. Glancing up from his parchment and over to the newly appointed queen, his eyes widened in surprise. He scrambled to his feet and bowed his head in respect.

❝ Heh. ❞ he mused and let out a mirthful chuckle.

❝ Ah was nappin' in the courtyard earlier...❞ He arched a brow then.

Gardens had always been a source of solace for Ben growing up. His mother had loved them -- had encouraged him to sit with her, in fact, while all her roses were bursting in full bloom -- and standing there amidst Charlotte's illustrious garden was a true sight to behold.

"I thank you for taking me here," he said. "I am unsure of what I've done to deserve this invitation, but naturally, I could not refuse...and not just because it could lead to my beheading." This last part had been said with jest, and the corner of his mouth lifted into a wry smile.

That was when she surprised him. With a freshly picked blossom in hand, Charlotte rose on tiptoe and tucked the flower behind Ben's ear, causing him to blink down at her in bafflement. Though as she lowered back down to her proper height, he grinned, chuckling as he reached up to touch the new adornment. "Somehow, I don't think this goes nearly as well with my ensemble as it would yours -- and most especially my m.ilitary uniform, whenever I so choose to wear it -- but I thank you for the gift. I'll have to press it in a book upon my return home."

Flowers, just like memories, could be preserved with the proper care and diligence.

And it really does not help that he is already a known trouble-maker since his early days.

    But in all honesty, he feared the outcome. He quite enjoyed being a free man. And he may have to force himself to enjoy it more if these are his final days roaming freely.
