Speculating on the contents of The High Republic Adventures Annual 2025

(because i love the high republic, procrastination, and completely inconsequential speculation)

The High Republic Adventures annual for phase 3 was recently announced as part of upcoming Crash Zone TPB out in April 2025.

THRA had an annual issue in phase 1 (2021) and none for phase 2. THRA annual 2021 was an anthology of 5 stories by the 5 original story architects of the high republic, each by a different penciller, with storylines largely unconnected to The High Republic Adventures 2021 comic:

Charles Soule: Set For Life, a story about Bell and Loden;

Claudia Gray: No Stone Unturned, a story about the Vessel crew;

Justina Ireland: First Mission, a Vernestra prequel;

Daniel José Older: Crash and the Crew Do What They Do, a Crash story setting up Midnight Horizon and other stories involving Crash's team;

Cavan Scott: The Haul, a Lourna story.

that's 1 story for every person writing high republic media at the time, each featuring what could be considered their pet character(s), plus some crossovers (Porter in Cavan's story, Stellan in Justina's, etc.). two stories tell the peace-time backstory of phase 1 characters, the others take place during the events of phase 1.

in 2023 we got Tales of Light and Life, an YA short story anthology by the high republic authors at the time, bridging all 3 phases and giving us the first phase 3 stories. they were:

Tessa Gratton: A Closed Fist Has No Claws (phase 2, Marda epilogue)

George Mann: Shield of the Jedi (phase 2, Silandra and Rooper epilogue)

Charles Soule: All Jedi Walk Their Own Path (Bell story bridging his stories in phases 1 and 3, plus pre-phase 1 flashbacks)

Cavan Scott: Light in the Darkness (phase 3, Keeve story setting up the 2023 adult comic run)

Lydia Kang: The Call of Coruscant (epilogue to phase 1, new character Amadeo Azzazzo, setting up Tears of the Nameless)

i assume there will be either 5 or 6 stories (leaning 5, because they'd have to make them pretty short to squeeze 6 into one issue). the Soules are obviously writing together. the issue is part of phase 3, and i expect all the stories to be set during it or potentially give backstory to characters introduced in phase 3.

the inclusion of the issue in Crash Zone implies a(t least one) Crash-focused story. DJO is the author of the collection's other two Crash issues but Alyssa Wong has written Rogue Element about Crash, a character based on them, and co-written another high republic work with DJO (Escape from Valo). maybe they're cooperating on this one too?

Rosemary Soule cooperated with her dad on Jedi Brave in Every Way, a children's book featuring Burry, Yoda, and the younglings Bree, Jon and Toko. these three have shown up in phase 3 comics as cameos (Shadows of Starlight issues 1 and 3, and Echoes of Fear issue 1). i think there's quite a chance the Soules' story brings them back in bigger roles, and i wouldn't be surprised to see Bell, Ember and Burry together in a low-stakes story.

i'm sorry if i have a limited mental image of Justina Ireland but i do feel fairly confident that her story is about Vernestra again... it's her brand after all, and she clearly enjoys writing Vern across the years. dark horse prediction: something about Avon, maybe connecting more to the Sana Starros comic.

Zoraida Córdova has written one phase 3 story (Beware the Nameless), and her high republic writing is connected by the Greylark family. i predict more Zenny Greylark, quite possibly with Churo the Hutt, set after BtN. i wouldn't be surprised to see a more explicit connection to Axel Greylark and the phase 2 storyline.

Zoraida, Alyssa, and Daniel have also all written the phase 3 Valo youngling gang including Tep Tep, Kildo, and their single teen dad Ram. are they going to do anything with them in this collection? i don't really expect it but it'd be cool. those kiddos have great designs.

i have no idea what to expect from Cavan, man. definitely a connection to the adult comics. quite possibly more about Keeve, whose story in phase 3 has covered the smallest amount of time of the main characters - then again, she is going to be in both Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone and Fear of the Jedi. maybe we're getting more Lourna instead, perhaps connecting to Tempest Breaker.

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 47

Ailee | Identity: nonbinary | Media: The High Republic Cataclysm 

Ailee was the port commander for Erasmus, the capital city of Eiram during the events of Cataclysm. When a ship exploded on Eiram and E’ronoh’s shared moon, they ordered the reverse military hauler Palana Van to investigate and interrogate the survivors of the crashed ship. They reported to Phan-Tu and the Eirami queens that the bioweapon klytobacter was found on the ship- which was a Path of the Open Hand ship that intentionally crashed on the planet to attempt to restart the Forever War.

They were aggressive and mistrustful of E’ronoh, only begrudgingly accepting the cease-fire. They ordered Palana and a squadron of Eirami ships to destroy the hauler with the klytobacter, assuming it was working for E’ronoh.

Bibs | Identity: non-binary | Media: High Republic Adventures (2020)

Bibs was one of the padawans being trained on the Star Hopper. Bibs wasn’t as close to Lula as Farzala and Qort, mostly hanging out in the background of panels doing their part, occasionally saying things. They were part of the mission to save Trymant IV. They were part of the large group of Jedi padawans and younglings that befriended Zeen when she first arrived on Starlight Beacon. Their next appearance was with the same group of young Jedi when Kantam was giving them updates on the situation after Valo before taking the main cast to Takodana. They participated in the Jedi Rumble Race where they took the “there are no rules” to mean they could replace the fuel in Ram’s droid with milk. Later, when scouting in a Vector (trying to compose some kind of song or poem to pass the time), they found the Nihil encampment on Dol’har Hyde, where Krix would finally be captured. They presumably escaped Starlight with the rest of the younglings and padawans they hung out with.

Fennec is in her merciless cutthroat assassin era - she’s a rising star at the top of her game. Hell, she’s gone toe to toe with Cad Bane. She speaks violence like it’s her second tongue and she’s played by fucking Ming-Na Wen, a queen of queens!

And now Asajj - she’s darkness and pain and agony, she’s been a slave, a padawan, a Sith, an assassin, a Nightsister, and a bounty hunter. She’s seen more of the galaxy than anyone else could hope for. She’s come back from the dead.

They’re toxic yuri, they’re murder wives. They’re violence4violence. Imagine them teaming up together - imagine the delicious angst you can write with these two! Hurt people hurt people - can they stop hurting each other? Do they even want to? Neither is trying to fix the other - they’re making the other worse. And I love that for them.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s Stats - Fourth Quarter

Since October 1, the Duchess of Cambridge has completed 55 engagements, averaging around 18.3 a month. Her busiest month has been October, during which she completed 31 engagements, undertook a tour of Pakiston, and was seen once, watching an Aston Villa football match, with her husband and two oldest children. She was also sighted three times in December, including making an appearance in the BBC One documentary “A Berry Royal Christmas”, and released two official photographs (one she took and one, unofficially released, which she appeared in).

Of her 20 patronages, she has visited or completed work for 5, totalling 20 engagements in total. In October, Catherine completed two engagements on behalf of the Natural History Museum and four engagements for the Royal Foundation. In November, she undertook eight engagements for the Royal Foundation, as well as two engagements for EACH and one engagement for Action on Addiction (footage of this visit was made available in December). In December, she completed two engagements on behalf of the Royal Foundation, as well as a surprise engagement for FamilyAction.

Of her 55 engagements, 17 have been solo and 34 accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Cambridge. Three engagements were with the whole BRF (the two Remembrance Day engagements in November, plus the NATO reception), whilst for the Diplomatic Reception in December she was accompanied by the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke of Cambridge.

Nearly all of the engagements have taken part in England, with the remaining 20 occuring in Pakistan. All of the England-based engagements took place in London bar four; one in Buckinghamshire, one in Liverpool, and two in Norfolk.

The majority of her engagements have been predominantly themed around the children - mainly due to an increase in engagements focused on her Early Years initiative - with diplomatic engagements, helped by duties undertaken while on tour, coming a close second. She has also undertaken engagements around the theme of the outdoors, mental health, fashion, the military, and sport. Several of her engagements did not fit into the theme headings I have created.

Clotheswise, her most worn designers have been Catherine Walker and Maheen Khan, followed by Alexander McQueen and Unidentified Fashion Objects. Her most carried bag designer was Emmy London, followed by Aspinal London (carried twice), and Chanel, Zeen Woman, Mulberry, Smythson, Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Choo (all carried once). Her most-worn shoe designer was both Gianvito Rossi and Jimmy Choo, followed by Emmy London and J Crew. For a second time, her most worn designer was not Kiki McDonough; instead, the majority of her jewellery was on loan from Her Majesty The Queen, while most of her accessories have not been identified (although she wore three scarves from Maheen Khan). When it comes to hats, three were worn, one each from Zara (a headband), Lock & Co., and Philip Treacy.

you smile softly, looking at the moon shining bright in the sky while sitting on your balcony railing, being careful not to fall. a little laugh escapes your lips as you think about all the times that byounggon, your best friend, scolded you after seeing you like this. the first time that he saw you sitting there he let out the loudest gasp ever, he came running to you and he hugged your waist, and then he picked you up and took you inside the room.

“are you out of your mind?” “I do that all the time, it’s not dangerous!” “all the time?” “yes, and as you can see, I’m still alive” “y/n, you have to be careful, what if you fall?” “stop being so overprotective gon, I know what I’m doing” “someday I’ll have a heart attack and it’ll be your fault, you little princess”

you also remember convincing him to sit on the railing with you, and how he didn’t let go of your hand until you both got down of it. byounggon has been your best friend since you can remember: you did everything together since your two royal families were and still are very close, you grew up together, and you two were there when the other one was sad and needed a hug. every person in the kingdom called you ‘the little royal couple’ because you were inseparable. every time one of you was doing something for the first time, the other was there, watching and holding their hand if they were scared. you two were also the first kiss of the other. you remember that day like it was yesterday: you were sitting on the railing like every other night, and byounggon was sitting next to you, holding your hand because he was “afraid to fall”, and you were looking at the moon together.

“it’s beautiful, isn’t it?” you turn your head to look at byounggon, and you nod. “yes, it is” he smiles at you and he turns his head to look at the moon. you start admiring his features like you do every time he is not looking at you, and you stay like this for a few minutes, not realizing that byounggon is staring back at you. “I know that I’m very beautiful and that you can’t resist me, but stop staring at me like that, it’s becoming creepy” you snap out of your thoughts, and as soon as you realize what happened, you start blushing like crazy. byounggon laughs and squeezes your hand to reassure you, looking at you in the eyes. his laugh slowly starts to fade, just like the little smile that formed on your lips, and in a few seconds, everything is in silence, and you two are lost in the eyes of the other. byounggon’s eyes slowly start to shift from your eyes to your mouth for a couple of times, until he breaks the silence. “can I kiss you?” for a few seconds, you’re surprised by his question, but as soon as you look at him in the eyes, all your worries disappear, and you nod, smiling at him. byounggon smiles too, and leans closer to you, reducing the gap between you two, until his lips touch yours. the kiss is a little slow and soft, but also clumsy and awkward being your first time. when you break the kiss and make eye contact with each other, you both start blushing and a laugh escapes your lips. “I never told you this, but I wanted to kiss you for a very long time” byounggon takes your other hand in his and starts drawing circles on your skin with his thumb. you smile at him. “mee too” “and… there is also another thing that I want to do” “what is it?” “asking your father to marry you” you look at him in disbelief, not knowing how to react. “b-byounggon…” “I know, I know, it may seem something impossible because our parents probably already decided who will be my future wife and your future husband, but… y/n, my princess, my love, my best friend, I love you so much, and I want to make you the happiest woman in the universe. I want you to be my Queen, and I want to be your King. I want you to be my beautiful Queen, forever.” at this point, tears are rolling down your face, and soft sobs are escaping from your mouth. “oh no, don’t cry please, did I say something wrong?” “no, no, it’s not that… I.. I love you too, and… and what you said was beautif-” another sob escapes your lips, and you start crying in byounggon’s arms, while he rubs your back. after a few minutes, you’re able to calm down, so you start speaking again. “I honestly don’t deserve you, gon, you’re a beautiful person, what did I do to have someone like you in my life?” byounggon smiles at you and dries your cheeks, wet from the tears, with his thumb. “what did you do to deserve me? you’re a beautiful person, inside and out, you always help people from all the kingdom, rich and poor, you always play with the little kids in the streets, you buy flowers and you gift them to the little girls and you let them play with your hair… I am the one who doesn’t deserve you. you’re truly an angel, y/n, my beautiful angel” byounggon smiles at you and leans in to give you another kiss, that you instantly return.

Susan Bones panted heavily as she faced off against the indomitable Major General Olivier Armstrong, sword in hand. Five minutes haven't even passed, she already is out of breath and any moment the young girl looks like she is about to keel over. This is the most fun she had in the longest time. None of her previous teachers had ever gone against her in such manner and gave her helpful criticism.

Here's to hoping Susan can still feel her arms by the end of the practice.

Sitting in the corner of the training room is Susan's aunt and guardian, Madam Amelia Bones. She quietly poured herself a cup of tea, non-magically. Something about not wanting to dilute her tea with magic. She also poured another cup of hot tea for Major Miles, whom is sitting on the other side of the small table that sat in between them. They were invited to watch the practice and it amuses them both for different reasons. Bones for reminiscing on how much Susan reminds her so much of her late brother, even down to her footwork. For Miles, the only time the Major General had ever been around children is her own and that's all. It's a refreshing sight.

With one last, clank, Armstrong easily pushed young Susan down to the ground before she put away her sword. She looked down at the young girl with a stern expression, Susan looked heavily bruised, breathing harshly and one of the biggest smiles she'd seen. "Again!"

"So much…fear. So much… chaos." Edward chanted out into the empty room, his eyes blank and body nearly lifeless. Sitting at the other side of the room is Roy, who is just as traumatized, mumbling to himself quietly. It's only been three days since the last meeting with the Ministry Officials, and many of them are still healing from their wounds. It was agreed that all meetings will be postponed until the last week of August or until the official nomination of Minister is announced.

"I am rethinking if my plans of leading Amestris." Roy stated in a blank voice, he twisted his head just enough to looked over at Edward.

Edward snorted, his previous trance all gone. He now causally sat in the chair and faced Roy with a placid expression. "Now, now. Don't quit while you are already ahead, Mustang. The Major General took care of majority of the work. We just have to finish it…"

"Here's to hoping she doesn't kill us before we can finish whatever we are doing in the first place." Roy deadpanned.

Edward paused for a moment and promptly shivered out of fright. Oh yes… everything will be for not if he gets killed. "At least she took out our main opponent and caused this place to rethink their opinion about us."

"Ah… yes… Opinion." A new voice chimed in tiredly.

Edward and Roy turned to see Alphonse walking into the room looking completely worn out. He had dark circles around his eyes, hair disheveled and looking like he is about to fall over at any moment. In Alphonse's hands is a clipboard that is overflowing with papers, letters and other random items. "Everyone that Major General Armstrong confronted against in the meeting are at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Fudge just experienced a third mental breakdown, Umbridge is dealing with a broken skull, fractured femur and a couple of torn up ribs, and everyone else have similar outcomes as them."

"What about that reporter?"

"Er…" Alphonse looked through the documents and pulled out a rather thick envelope. "Both wrist broken and dealing with hair loss. Ms. Skeeter is planning on taking us on in court."

"…Can she do that?" Roy asked with an eyebrow raised.

"We'll… unfortunately for her, Madam Bones allowed what occurred in that room to slide under the table due to an old law. Plus, Skeeter wasn't even allowed in the meeting that day and was only permitted under Fudge's watch. She was his responsibility." Alphonse read the letter tiredly. "Bad news, she might continue to slander our names."

"Does she really want to risk the anger of the Ice Queen herself?" Edward deadpanned.

"Well… when she was saying all of this, apparently she was still under the weather. It's up to interpretation at this point."

"...I wonder what's Winry is doing right now?"

Severus peeked his head through the doorway he knew Edward is currently located at. He is carrying a bottle of finely ages firewhiskey and a couple of glasses. Hopefully he'll manage to pry some information from him and break him from his trance. By the looks of it, Edward had snapped out of his comatose like state. Edward sat in a front of the fireplace with his rough draft of his book. "Edward?"

"Hm?" Edward hummed out, his attention still on his book. "Vat?"

"Care of a drink?"

"It petter pe fireviskey." Edward stated, his accent back in full blast. His eyes narrowed on the bottle Severus is waving around in front of himself. "Kood. I'm in need of it."

Severus snorted, he handed Edward a glass before he sat down in a chair next to the Golden Blonde. "That bad?"

"I haffe zeen many zings in mein life. Zeeing zee Ice Gueen in aczion once more, prings pack mein nightmares." Edward flinched at the first memory of meeting the eldest child of the Armstrong Family. He extended his arm out with the glass in hand for Severus to sever him his drink. "I vould face off mein demons any day zan to effer face her head on."

"What did she do?"

"Sche uzed her svord... zen uzed ein ben... after preaking zee ben... sche schtarded kicking... Oh truth..." Edward gulped down his drink in one gulp, he shook his head at feeling the drink prickle his throat as it went down. "Zen... it vas offer. Zey vere all fordunate sche did not kill any of zem."

"You make it sound like you expected death?"

"Ja." Edward answered with a snort. "Hoveffer... from vat I haffe peen told, killing vould rezort to haffing zomeone takeoffer her Briggs Bears."

Edward extended his arm out again, signaling for Severus to refill his glass. Severus rolled his eyes as he filled the Alchemy Teacher's glass once more. At least he got some information on what occurred in that meeting room. Major General Armstrong was insulted, she took personal action and the end result are many taken to get medical attention. Nothing new. Nothing old. "I am surprised none of you were ordered to leave the country or have your minds obliterated."

"...Madam Bones found ein old law..."

"…Of course, she did."

Tepoh | Identity: genderfluid (varying levels of female) (zhe/zher) | Media: Queen’s Hope

Tepoh was a member of Naboo’s diplomatic corps who was recommended to interview to be Senator Amidala’s handmaiden. Mostly out of curiosity, zhe took the interview but was passed over in favor of other candidates. Dormé recommended Tepoh to Saché as an aide, who was now a member of Naboo’s legislative assembly. As Saché’s aide, zhe joined them on a diplomatic mission to Karlinus, one of Naboo’s client states, to help renegotiate an ancient exploitative law and investigate a strange flow of freed slaves being sent to Karlinus. Tepoh figured out that all the slaves came from planets with a strong presence of corporations that were now aligned with the Separatists (this would help Padmé put things together in the A plot, it was a Nemiodian trying to get Padmé to support him in his coup attempt by freeing and sending enslaved people to the same planet she helped resettle Tatioone slaves when she first became a Senator).

Tepoh was a very skilled aide, and even on zher first mission things were more organized. Zhe was reading a guidebook on the way to Karilinus, attempting to learn the local culture. When zhe took the interview to be a handmaiden, zhe was unsure if they’d be completely comfortable with the job and having to present as female all of the time. Zhe liked the idea of sometimes pretending to be Naboo royal guard depending on that day’s gender.

Zeen Mrala | Identity: wlw | Media: The High Republic Phase I

Zeen Mrala was raised in the Elders of the Path cult, a religion which saw force-sensitivity as abhorrent. In a metaphor for being neurodivergent and/or queer, Zeen was force-sensitive, which was something she had to keep secret. When her planet was simultaneously affected by an Emergence and attacked by the Nihil, she was forced to use her powers to help the Jedi save her people. This caused her closest friend, Krix Kammerat, to feel betrayed, and he joined the Nihil. Unable to stay with the Path, she joined the Jedi of the Star Hopper, who agreed to train her as essentially a Jedi auxiliary even though she was too old to become a proper Jedi. She found it was much easier to make friends when she didn’t have to hide who she was, and easily found a family among the Padawans on the Star Hopper. She grew closest with the padawan Lula Talisola. She joined the Jedi in attempting to hunt down Krix, who was quickly growing in power within the Nihil. Through her Force connecting with Lula and the balancing of love and nonattatchment they were able to succeed. After Starlight Beacon was destroyed and Lula was declared missing, she swore she would do whatever it took to find her love.

When Zeen first confronted Krix after she decided to hunt him down, her anger at Krix’s reaction to his view of her powers drove her to Force choke him, only being held back by Lula. After further Jedi training, the next time she had Krix had her mercy she was able to resist his bait and didn’t harm him. She had come to terms that Krix had never really loved her if he couldn’t accept all of her. She took well to Jedi training, but never had any angst about not being allowed to become a proper Jedi.
