Ahahaha oh god and he's the only one with a hard hat, of course. (I like to think he didn't start wearing the hood up until after he and Resh'an started fighting, but that image is just too good.)

I do like the idea that Serai had some kind of relationship to the Queen! I agree that she's got to be at least a few hundred years old, and I think most of the humans were probably turned at around the same time. We don't see any cyborg babies, so it may be that Aephorul waited until all of them were at least self aware before throwing them through the machine.

I do wish we knew why he made them into cyborgs, unless it was to maintain a steady food supply for the Dweller of Dread. Maybe it was just spite; cursing other creatures with immortality seems to be a big part of what he's doing.

Now I keep thinking about Aephorul, surveying all the forklift certified Songsters working on Es'tristae, and then filing all of their complaints about unsafe working conditions directly in the trash.

He keeps his "World's #1 Boss" coffee mug (a gift from Two) on his desk next to a framed picture of Resh'an.

Pondering timelines and things under the cut.

Resh'an talks about wanting natural flight

Aephorul finds the birdmen on Serai's world and makes a deal with them- he synthesizes their souls into a transmutation spell for Resh'an, and they get mind magic and a god

He takes a bunch of Songsters hostage to force T'kor to build Es'tristae. This may or may not happen before he completes the spell for Resh'an.

The human Queen sells out her people in exchange for a body made of guns. This may or may not happen before the spell is complete and the Songsters are subjugated.

Resh'an gets his birthday gift. This may or may not happen before (3) and (4).

Resh'an captures the Sands of Time with Aephorul's help.

At least several hundred years later, Resh'an finds out about Aephorul; they start fighting

Resh'an breaks the space-time continuum.

Aephorul starts building the Clockwork Castle (to impress Resh'an. Bruh.)

Cael and the kids build the cloud condensers for Sky Base

Aephorul crashes the moon into the ocean and blots out the sun, solidifying his base on Serai's world

Stuff that I can't place but will have to make decisions on at some point-

The last of the Songsters die or get turned into gaseous soul-forms. ('Untethered souls', which are not the same thing as ghosts; Hortense and the former Aventry Manor staff aren't subject to the same limitations.) We don't know how long Aephorul was experimenting on them. I would probably put this between 7 and 8 on the list above, followed by:

The transformation of the remaining Repine humans into cyborgs. Could happen concurrently with any number of other items in the list. I think the humans probably fell after the Songsters, and Aephorul used what he learned from the Songsters to create the cyborgs.

Barrier over Mesa Island- was this raised by Khukharr as a containment measure after DoS? Or was it raised after Aephorul left? Can Khukharr raise and lower it at will?

The Acolytes can move through the barrier without issue, but we don't actually know how teleportation works.

How did Yomara get to Songshroom Marsh? Has she been there since before the barrier went up? Could she leave before it came down?

When did Romaya move into the eastern swamp? Could she have left without getting pulled in by the DoW? Her soulstones can cancel DoW's summons, but if Woe were really determined to take her, would she have stood a chance?

Can't decide if I like the idea of Moyara also having an affinity for swamps, or if she didn't even know how to swim.

27. I'm actually gonna ask the same thing I asked smaller-comfort. tell me your personal SoS lore for your fics. Your headcanons. I want to know your interpretation of characters and worldbuilding!

I have so, *so* many. I apologize now for the length!

I can't remember if this is addressed in game, but headcanon that Aephorul is extremely skilled at traveling through space/dimensions. Also headcanon that he *can* travel through time as well, it's just more difficult for him to do so (doesn't have a Vial of Time like Resh'an does, but has his own way of doing it.)

Contradictory to canon, Dwellers *can* be killed without Solstice Warriors, but it's extremely difficult to do so (and at extreme loss of life and destruction of the surrounding area). After Resh'an figured out that Solstice magic is the best chance at defeating Dwellers without all the immense fallout, he propaganda-ed the hell out of the worlds to make it seem like *only* Solstice Warriors are able to fight them to mitigate the losses; then implemented his Cult for Child Soldiers(TM) to ensure that those Warriors wouldn't question it. (Honestly, the whole thing is Resh'an's answer to the Trolley Problem).

People who are born *close* to a Solstice, but miss the actual day, have a huge boost to their magical potential. Much higher chance for elemental magic that corresponds to the Solstice they're near.

Borrowed from @smaller-comfort, but Resh'an has a system of puppets on the various worlds/dimensions that deal with *most* of the Solstice Born and deliver them to their Mooncradle/equivalent. Those that he sees have an extremely high potential of success, he delivers personally (Valere and Zale, for instance).

Parents of Solstice Born are given advance warning by the Great Eagle Puppet landing on their home, sometimes even arriving before the parents realize they're gonna have a baby themselves. This is to give the family time to come to terms with having to part with their child. If the parents do not name the baby, then the current Headmaster will on their arrival at Mooncradle.

Minor Mooncradle headcanon: The beard that younger Moraine, Brugaves, and Garl sport is unique to Mooncradle. They start growing it out in their 20s (mustache is optional, but is usually started around 40-50's).

Another Minor Mooncradle headcanon, and Trio Headcanon: Kids keep their hair about shoulder length until they hit their teens, then they can do what they want (though most keep it long anyway). Zale *hated* the long hair, and snuck out to chop it all off with stolen shears (a couple of years before they sneak into the Forbidden Cavern). When he got in trouble, Garl did the same in solidarity (though he managed a much neater cut to his hair); Valere never cut her hair bc she likes the length, though would help Zale and Garl keep their hair shorn short (either by standing guard while they cut it, or cutting it herself (it's usually neater when she does it. Zale usually gets impatient and ends up hacking at it. Eventually the adults give up on enforcing the hair rule for them.

Monsters are on the rise, both because of the ones being developed in Aephorul's Lair and sent out to the game world, and the Acolytes also doing whatever they could to boost them (monster farmers?? *snerk*). A lot of smaller villages/towns get overrun and are either completely destroyed, or people end up just leaving their homes and making their way to larger cities for the protections they provide (why Brisk looks/feels so sprawling and diverse; also why some get desperate enough to try for Lucent (not believing the warnings/tales and getting stuck).

All the cyborgs on Serai's world have actually been around for a long, long time. None of them can really remember exactly how long anymore, due to their trauma of being turned into cyborgs along with all the continuous torture from the Dweller of Dread.

Serai is related to the Queen that Was (going for niece, atm), and part of her desperation to fix everything is because of that (though she can't fully remember *why*, she feels responsible for it all.)

The Queen That Was had been a powerless figurehead for the government in the Megacity, and had made a deal with Aephorul or one of his followers, to grab for power for herself and humans against the other races.

Tentative idea is that Cedric (computer aide to Serai) was a scientist whose experiments/designs were stolen and repurposed into the Catalyst. He learned what was happening, and before he could be captured and forced into the Catalyst himself, managed to upload himself into a computer in Repine (saving his soul from the Dweller). As time went by, he became more like a computer/machine himself until it was just assumed that he is an AI when found by Serai.

Songsters were little guys! Look like an anthropomorphic cat, with a very long, prehensile tail (resembles a cougar/snowy leopard in shape.) Broad shouldered, are very strong, but short and stocky (ranging around 3 or 4 feet in height.) Hands are 5 fingered, but feet are broad paws to aid in climbing (so no shoes for these guys). Very large ears, and their faces don't really lose a kitten-ish look; there is a huge variety of fur types and colors. Clothing is loose and draped when not working/building; more for decoration than protection (they wear more when dealing with other races, to account for differing race stances on nudity). They have specific clothes they wear when building, for fur/body protection (PPE, like little hard hats, special boots, etc).

Songster cities were designed to look like they sprung up with nature, as balanced as they possibly could with their environment. They had magic and tech to make life comfortable, even in the smallest villages. Their tech was pretty advanced, and built to blend in and be unobtrusive.

Human cities lean more to high urban and tech, though they do have many pockets for greenery (parks and the like). Essentially like how Star Trek and Star Wars "utopia" cities are depicted? All clean lines or heavy industrial and super integrated with tech and machines (leaning more towards Star Wars. There are still slums and underlying issues that are swept under the rug).

The Birdmen were not necessarily less technologically advanced, but their religion/culture made it look as if they were. Like the Songsters, they built their structures to work with nature, but with as little influence on the "wild" areas as possible. They have technology, but is integrated into their structures to not be as obvious as the other races; and due to their religion, some technology is simply forgone. (In game the Sacrosanct Spires is very heavy on the stone structures, integrated with nature, but the huge root system and cut branches suggests a lot of it was cut down and back? Possibly something that happened during/after Aephorul's influence). Their preference is to keep as much of their history/religion/culture intact, so they appeared to be less advanced. (Birdmen were possibly dissmissed by humans (and even by Songsters?) as being hidebound to their religion and less advanced as a result, and that might have been a driving force as to why they sided with Aephorul).

The Megacity was built as an attempt at strengthening a developing peace between the races, with the Songsters doing a lot of the design, but all contributing to it's development (definitely prior to the Cult getting a firmer stranglehold on the Birdmen.)

Before Aephorul arrived and set up his stronghold, there were a lot of wars between the Birdmen and Humans, as well as civil wars between Humans. In the height of strength in the megacity, there was ultimately a huge grab for power by the Queen That Was to solidify humans as the ones in charge instead of being governed by a congress of all races.

She gets her power from the sun and hellfire. She can create light beams, stars, etc. it can blind her opponent and it can burn from the heat of the beam and it mostly depends on her emotions on what color it is. Serafina is an extremely powerful enchantress. Serafina has a great ability to levitate objects metallic and nonmetallic, with the electromagnetic field she can levitate objects and destroy them in the air, or through a small manipulation of gravity. To put it more simply she can manipulate metal and the magnetic fields around her. Serafina is a gifted and accomplished huntress. She has a heightened sense of acrobatic and hunting prowess.

Personality

She is known to be very vibrant but she is also known for her haughtiness honestly she is one of the sweeter things in Outworld believe it or not. According to, Kitana and Mileena she is known to also be considerate, she is optimistic about the decisions she makes and always listens to other people's problems and opinions. She is honest with herself and others even though they don't want to hear the truth, especially from her.

History

Serafina is the daughter of Ambrosia the Edenian who raised the sun in every realm and Drake the natural leader who wanted a realm of his own to rule.

Serafina grew up in Outworld with her mother, her brother, and her baby sister. It was rare when she saw her father until she just stopped seeing him altogether.

In Mortal Kombat 9, Serafina is shown to have a close friendship with Nova and Jade but she isn't seen that much until MKX.

In MKX she is seen helping Mileena, Tanya, and Rain with the Rebellion to help Mileena win her throne back. She is seen battling Dʼvorah but once again isn't shown much but it has been hinted that she was thrown into the dungeons and to avoid execution she joined Koʼatalʼs court.

In Mortal Kombat 11, she is seen hugging Jade as she enters through the portal and she aids Kitana in becoming Kahn.

In MK1 she has a much bigger role in the new era. She is seen training among the Umgadi in her younger years but never officially became an Umgadi not favoring the stone rules she must follow so Sindel offers her a position inside her royal court after her mother retired.

Serafina is shown to be close to Countess Jade and Tanya even supporting Tanyaʼs relationship with Mileena but warning her to be mindful of elders who wouldn't approve. Serafina also cares for Rain in her own way or at least that what others tend to say.

Serafina openly shows disdain towards Reiko and General Shao. Not so much to Reiko but more so to the General, because he has proven to her that so much ego and ignorance can quite literally be shoved into one person.

A workbench and a cot is not proper furnishings, Serai. I would say we need to get you a bed but we already did, on the Vespertine.

Worlds plural? Serai, did you visit other worlds before coming to ours?

Come to think of it, how did you even get to ours? The Sky Giants seemed to imply that the Vespertine is a necessary key for traveling the Sea of Stars and no other vessel can do it.

Well, at least we know what the pink glowy thing in the desert is. It's not the Dweller; In fact, based on drone footage, I'm now pretty sure the Dweller is in the ocean and guarding the moon. But it's still awful. Pretty sure everything in this world is.

So, I believe I've wrapped up all the sidequests that specifically tied to each of the individual playable characters. It's clear they were evoking Chrono Trigger's optional mini-quests individualized for each of the core cast members, which is great, but while the latter used that as a vehicle to examine its characters, Sea of Stars... doesn't really.

I know there's a mixed opinion on how bland the characters are. I'm firmly of the camp that it's fine the way it is. I don't particularly care that the main characters are straightforward depiction of their specific archetype, a lot of their personalities carry through as is. But I think there was a missed opportunity to takes these sidequests that were very specific tied to them and expand their idiosyncrasies a bit.

It's kind of expected Zale and Zalere wouldn't get much to begin with because they were designed purely to be as Vanilla as possible. I'd argue there wasn't much that could be done with Puppet Resh'an than what we got (and arguably, his doll form pulling out the cork from its hat after all that puzzle solving and sea slug-beating was more than quirky enough), but the other half really missed the mark.

I think Serai's in particular hit me the most between her and the Queen Who Was. She mentioned the latter "betrayed" them, implying a past that greatly effected both her and the town of Repine. I really wanted to know more.

And I'm not arguing for the deepest take on each of these characters. It's just, well, it ain't gonna beat out CT where we had Lucca guilt-ridden over the loss of her mother's legs because she couldn't figure out how to work her inventor father's machine, causing her to embrace science so she could benefit both mankind and her own. It's not Marle who reconciles with her father, having formed a strained relationship since her mother's passing. It's not Robo who discovers his true name and purpose.

There are only hints of something greater with Sea of Star's Character Quest, but it never quite gets there.

Kings&queen j'ai un dilemme.... Depuis un moment je me dis que j'aimerais demander un 80% l'année prochaine. Si c'est accepté c'est payé 85% de mon salaire temps plein.

depuis quelques années le mois de novembre est devenu le pire mois de l'année, alors qu'historiquement c’est censé être mon mois, avec le scorpion et mon anniversaire et noël au bout du couloir. mais là j'ai envie de le faire disparaitre mon anniversaire qui marque le temps qui passe et de crier whitehead you were WRONG je suis le grain de sable dans la théorie de la process philo parce que je bouge pas moi, jamais. je suis, dans l’ordre chronologique de mes divers diagnostics: endormie, gelée, à moitié morte, anesthésiée. sans oublier le moteur de ferrari coincé dans une deux chevaux. gracious.

ça va faire 48h que je suis enfermée dans ma chambre parce que maman est malade et que j’ai pas envie de tomber malade alors que ça changerait pas grand chose à mon quotidien pour être honête. dehors il pleut et c’est la tempête et hier soir j’ai regardé real housewives of new york jusqu’à deux heures du matin pour couvrir le bruit des voisins qui rigolaient à gorge déployée avec leurs invités en bas. j'avais l'impression de m'être cramé le cerveau mais dans un des épisodes jenna lyons va dans un bar lesbien de manhattan et monte sur scène pour danser avec une drag queen strip teaseuse donc ça en valait la peine. je veux aller dans un bar lesbien avec jenna lyons et qu’elle flirte avec moi ostensiblement pour me ramener dans son appart de soho archi luxe que je connais déjà par coeur.

à paris dans le metro j’écoutais une fille d’une vingtaine d’années qui racontait à son amie la première fois qu’elle avait eu un crush sur une fille qui était hétéro et son amie lui demandait si elle le lui avait dit mais j’ai pas entendu la suite. ça m’a renvoyée à moi à paris y a douze ans avec ma profonde solitude face à mes tout nouveaux et terrassants sentiments pour j. et puis le soir chez chartier on était assises à côté d’un jeune étudiant en première année de licence de lettres modernes qui parlait de ses cours chiants et de ses devoirs à rendre avec sa mère en visite à paris et ça m’a rendue un peu mélancolique, pas dans le sens nostalgique mais dans le sens si je m’étais penchée vers leur table pour lui dire que moi aussi j’avais fait des études de lettres modernes à la sorbonne et qu’il m’avait demandé ce que j'en avais fait j’aurais eu que des regrets à lui rapporter. regrets de pas avoir continué dans la linguistique l’édition ou le cinéma pour avoir au moins un master, regrets de pas avoir bifurqué vers des études d’art, regrets de m’être laissée glisser dans le vide avant même d'avoir terminé mon année de m1.

à part ça lundi matin en sortant de la gare de l’est j’ai vu céline sallette au coin du boulevard magenta, elle m’a brièvement regardée, sans doute attirée mon oeil gauche comme tous les autres gens. elle portait une doudoune noire et elle tenait un enfant par la main. elle avait l’air soucieuse mais elle était magnifique.

quatrième, cinquième, sixième, 180e jour d'exil dans ma chambre? je me suis quand même aventurée dans le salon pour regarder harry potter 3 ce soir mais j'ai loupé la moitié du film parce que je discutais de trucs cons avec r., on discutait déjà de trucs cons ce matin, puis je suis partie à la pharmacie et à la boulangerie chercher des trucs pour maman et on a continué à discuter quand je suis rentrée, il me racontait qu'il avait réussi sa formation et obtenu un contrat d'un an qui lui permet d'être payé pour développer ses propres projets et après ça normalement il aura droit au statut d'artiste et à la fin du message il crie et j'aurai plus besoin de job alimentaiiiire!!!!! comme dans ma chanson de saturne. j'ai du me forcer à me réjouir pour lui, heureusement par écrit c'est facile de faire semblant, mais si je l'avais eu en face de moi il aurait vu mon âme morte derrière mes yeux, et ma saleté de jalousie aussi. il part en tournée en france bientôt et je sais pas pourquoi ça me met dans cet état, je suis jalouse à en avoir mal au ventre, alors qu'y a un an je le connaissais pas et il vivait sa vie de musicien et moi je vivais ma vie de merde, blissfully unaware.

une fille qui a vu mon film au festival en islande hier soir m'a dit qu'elle l'avait trouvé très beau et plein de joie et que c'était le plus cool qu'elle ait vu jusqu'à maintenant et ça me tue d'être enfermée dans ma chambre à regarder rhony et à pleurer sur r. et sa jolie tête dans des vidéos de huit minutes où il joue des trucs discordants sur ses multiples synthés à me dire non mais il pourrait pas au moins avoir la décence de se couper la tête pour la remplacer par une plus moche c'est quoi cet affront là, au lieu d'être en islande en train de discuter de mon film avec des gens et agrandir mon réseau. le nouveau directeur de la lunga school semble l'avoir bien aimé lui aussi donc je me dis qu'il est peut être pas si nul que ça? mon film pas le directeur.

Name meaning tag game

Stolen from @catchingbigfish because I don't yet know enough authors to be tagged very often.

Rules: list your OCs and explain their name meanings

Most of my character names are actually names that come from the constructed language I created. So it's bound to be wordy. Also these are the main characters for the first four books of the series.

Dobid - comes from the word dobeda, which means ghost/immortal/books (it literally translates as "that which is unrestrained from time", there's also an element of separation from the community, so it infers things like ghosts and gouls because they're not "us".

Jaola - canonically her name comes from Ja'Jo'La, or Ya'yola, which essentially means "ender of life", which suits her in one way because she was trained/brainwashed to become an assassin and she's very good at it, even if she hates it. In real life, I created her character in my tweens, and at that point I was taking names from real life and mashing them up, her name originally came from Julia. I don't know off the top of my head what Julia means, but the conlang meaning of her name is more appropriate anyway.

Jessal - another mashed real name, I have a cousin called Jessie, she had a crappy childhood too so I borrowed her name and put it into my story as a tween, then changed it to Jessal when I was 19. In the conlang it would come from "Ye Sala", which, from the story mythology is the name of a famous prince who lead his people out of a famine.

Asha - Comes from Ashaana, which means goddess. The context is that her grandmother, who is called Ashaana, is very powerful in her homeland and when she eventually dies, she doesn't reincarnate again, she becomes a Time Guardian, which is a sort of deity. Asha, the granddaughter, is more in line with the older version of the name which describes the divine feminine, which is a powerful, strong warrior. So her name means "formidable warrior", and she totally is kick ass.

Taelin - comes from the older name Taelanei. Taelanei is a nobleman's name, it translates from the conlang as "a world of life and magic/spirit", in a less literal translation, Taelanei would be the conlang name of the Kingdom of the Fae or Fairyland or whatever else folks call it. So in Taelin's version, his name basically means that he has a whole world on the inside of him, waiting to come out.

Nalana - another conlang name, which means "the embodiment of life". She's a healer (kind of like Reiki but strong enough to heal a bullet out of a body), and the energy used as a healer is lifeforce, so, basically her name means "healer".

Nama - the oldest form of his name is Namaan/Ngamaan. As a word it basically means a person who is very present in their body and in the world. But when I first started making the conlang (and before I named the character), I created myths and stories to give colour and references for the conlang. So, there was a general called Ngamaan, the nobleperson he worked for was corrupt. And after an inciting incident where the noble killed a bunch of civilians for a really selfish reason, Ngamaan lead the armies into a coup. He killed the corrupt noble, became the steward of the kingdom, adopted the nobleperson's heir, brought them up to be a good leader and when they came of age, he surrendered the title of steward and the heir became the king/queen/whatever. So while the name means one thing linguistically, the story infers the name means the kind of person who would have this sort of honour and dedication. Which, Nama the character really does.

Serai - is a hard name to translate, there's an inference of nobility and/or strength (se), and inference of a life path that is lived in a very non-typical way (rai). But she's a character who ends up working in a very hostile context, and manages to still kick ass in the office and eventually become a boss. She also kicks ass out of the office because she's actually a spy. In the real world, her name was a second generation mashing up of Sarah. A long time ago I had a brilliant friend called Sarah, and she died, so I kept her alive in the various versions of her name in the story (there are currently four of them in the larger scale of the story - which spans more than a hundred years).

Riian - Comes from RiiYaan, which the literal translation is "yellow path", but yellow is associated with joy and happiness, so what her name really means is "Joy". Also, fyi, her name is actually the male form, the womenly form is Riiana. This is one of my many little hints in the story to show which characters might be trans.

Anarian - is actually very similar to a Maori name "Anaru", which is a transliteration of Andrew. My first boy crush was called Andrew, (Anarian is a very old character). In the story Anarian is a mash up of his actual name An'aa, and his adopted sister's name Riian. An'aa's name doesn't translate from my conlang the nearest word "ana" which is a piece of grammar that marks the present tense in the middle of a sentence. He's an alien to the main characters, and on his homeworld, there was another one called An'aa, and this figure was brave and smart and adventurous, they're famous for discovering something that allowed his people to safely travel the stars. So, in his culture, his name means things like adventurous, smart, courageous, and most importantly, it means that his parent hopes he's destined for greatness.

I haven't yet interacted enough with writerly mutuals yet to remember their usernames enough to tag them, so if you see it (and are interested) feel free to consider yourself tagged.

Does it say anything in there about what she is? Like, I have a vague understanding of what she is in the sense that she's an ominous force that menaces Repine. She used to be their queen but then she betrayed them, possibly to the Soul Curator?

But. Like. Literally, what is she? A robot? A monster? Just some asshole in the desert? What are we dealing with here and, more importantly, what kind of dimensions are we going to need to dig for the grave?

There is one thing in this entry that is no longer true. I aim to create further contradictions.
