What are the roles of characters like Hamlet Sr., Claudius, and Fortinbras like in your Hamlet AU?
I'm so glad you asked! The backstory I've constructed for the three of them is heavily inspired by what I imagined when I played Gertrude.
Hamlet Sr and Claudius (identical twins) grew up in Elsinore, alongside Gertrude.
Gertrude always had feelings for Claudius- ever since they were children, she'd known that, and eventually it was clear to her that her feelings were returned. Her parents, however, had other plans. When Hamlet and Claudius's parents died, they left the house and the money to Hamlet, and Gertrude's parents new from that point that it was Hamlet their daughter was going to marry.
Gertrude has never been a person who makes her opinions known. Hamlet asks her to marry him. She says yes. She buries any wish for anything else, and does her duty. She marries Hamlet, and she gives him a son. They're happy. They're happy enough. She likes him- she even loves him- and maybe it's not a passionate love, and maybe her heart hurts when Claudius visits and he smiles at her, but it's companionship. It's enough.
Eventually, though, it's not enough for Claudius. He had a life he meant to lead, and he wants to lead it. He wants the wife he always meant to have and the house he always meant to live in. Eventually, he decides that he's done waiting. If Hamlet dies before his son is eighteen, Claudius gets the house. Hamlet Jr is sixteen. He doesn't have much time to lose.

Reason:
The circumstances surrounding the marriage are suspicious. Gertrude married Claudius almost immediately after her first husband, Hamlet Sr, gets murdered by his brother, who's no other than Claudius himself. A good majority of Gertrude's character is ambiguous and left up to personal interpretation, so there's the possibility that Claudius forced her to marry him. And if you want another character's opinion on the marriage, Gertrude's son ain't having it and is pissed off about his mom and uncle marrying, especially so soon after his dad's passing, which honestly, fair enough.

I think that a really cool fanart for Hamlet would be Ivan the Terrible Holding His Son, but have it be Gertrude holding Hamlet.

Lesbian Claudius so that Hamlet’s speech about “frailty, thy name is woman” is lesbophobic as well as sexist and also because Shakespearean yuri is my shit
