Spain's golden fleece order is only given to men (see misogyny). King Juan Carlos broke tradition and gave it to Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Beatrix and Queen Margrethe II. They were the first and only women members for decades until King Felipe gave it to Princess Leonor, and I'm glad he's extending that now to his mother. There are only 4 living women members of the order: Princess Beatrix, Queen Margrethe, The Princess of Asturias and Queen Sofia. I expect we'll see Queen Letizia given it one day too, and all the future sovereign queens of European countries. King Felipe giving it to Queen Sofia is a milestone in the history of the order. She's the only female member who isn't, wasn't, or won't be sovereign in her own right. He just said fuck it, she deserves it and I'm King, I'll do what I want. Some Hapsburg is rolling in their grave right now.
