Recently picked up this Schrade Little Ricky sheath knife to take care of light wood chopping and other outdoor tasks. The s thing is a beast - full tang, about a quarter inch thick, and 14 inches long. You can actually use it kind of like a hatchet owing to the machete-like blade and weight, but surprisingly, the balance point is pretty close to the end of the handle, meaning it’s not unwieldy and isn’t a bad thrower. Here are a few throws from 10-15 ft. One of the reasons I was looking for one like this is that the Imperial Rangers in #TheThirteenthHour were written to have sheath knives like this as part of their loadout in the book - big, heavy, and long for chopping, hammering, and generally abusing, but a lot of real life counterparts didn’t quite fit the bill, so I just used my imagination. Despite what happen on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (both the cartoon and first movie), throwing the sai (which I use more along the lines of its original use - making holes in the dirt for gardening), doesn’t work all that great. Most of the ones you can buy are made of cast iron so are really heavy and not very well balanced for throwing. If your goal is to get it stuck in the target, the bluntness of the end and the balance make it hard, though it can be done. Of course, one could argue given the weight of the thing, it frankly doesn’t matter which end you get a hit with. It’s probably best used in its original capacity (hand to hand), like the jutte (Japanese equivalent), but always interesting to know it could have another use if needed.
