Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP)
Breeds with HYPP; Quarter Horses, American Paint Horses, Appaloosas, and Quarter Horse Crosses.
HYPP
"An inherited disease of the muscle, caused by a genetic defect. A mutation in the sodium channel gene. Sodium channels are pores in the muscle cell membrane which control contraction of the muscle fibers. When the defective sodium channel gene is present, the channel becomes “leaky” and makes the muscle overly excitable and contract involuntarily. The channel become “leaky” when potassium levels fluctuate in the blood. This may occur with fasting followed by consumption of a high potassium feed such as alfalfa. Hyperkalemia, which is an excessive amount of potassium in the blood, causes the muscles in the horse to contract more readily than normal. This makes the horse susceptible to sporadic episodes of muscle tremors or paralysis."
GENOTYPE
HYPP Positive= H/N and H/H
HYPP Negative= HYPP N/N
HYPP horses with H/N genotype means they are heterozygous carriers, carrying one copy of the HYPP gene. If you bred a mare who is H/N to a stallion who is N/N, you would have about a 50% chance the foal is H/N as well. However if you bred an H/N mare to an H/N stallion you will have about a 25% chance the foal being N/N, a 50% chance it will be H/N, and a 25% chance it will be H/H.
HYPP horses with the H/H genotype means it is homozygous, carrying both copies of the HYPP gene. 100% passing the HYPP gene to it's offspring.
I made a thing in case it helps the visual learners out there

IMPRESSIVE (but not really)
Let's talk about the QH stallion, Impressive. All horses that have a HYPP positive gene of any kind, all descend from this horse. Impressive sired 2,250 foals and they estimate he has around 50,000 living descendants. No dilution of lineage will remove HYPP, as it is a dominant trait and will show whether you are 5 generations back or 2.
HYPP SYMPTOMS
HYPP varies in severity, it's not always equal and every horse may have different reactions. HYPP can be confused for tying-up or even colic, they may have difficulty breathing, muscle tremors, sweating, weakness, tremors. In more severe cases the horse may collapse from paralysis of the muscles in the airway and can result in sudden death.
Not every horse who is HYPP positive may display symptoms, making this disease sometimes hard to detect.
IS IT CURABLE?
No. HYPP may be managed with diet and certain medicines for maintenance but it cannot be cured. H/H positive horses have poor prognosis and can be much more difficult to manage.
VIDEOS OF HYPP ATTACKS

Is there anything I forgot? Anything to add? Just covering the basics of this disease and what it does to these horses.

Boarders who mistreat their horses are the worst
I work as a groom since autumn 2018. My first boss was very abusive to her employees but she loved her horses. She fortunately changed over the years but she taught me to always put the horses first.
On my current job we have a married couple with three quarter horses. A senior gelding aged 26 and two younger geldings, chestnut and dapple grey, both turning six. The senior and the dapple grey are owned by the woman and the chestnut by the man.
She bought her young gelding in autumn only last year. She had a four year old mare before that but they "didn't work" (because she/both of them treat their horses like shit!). She sold her after giving her to a trainer and the mare was already "doing better" but whenever she visited to ride her, it worked out poorly... I wonder why....
Their horses hate them. Especially the woman's "new" dapple grey, Pelle, is so afraid of her. It breaks my heart!
Pelle is a sweet heart. Very friendly and sensitive but ABSOLUTELY done with this shit! He changed SO much since arriving at our stable. He used to play with Socke, the gelding in his age and he used to try to seduce the mares next to their pasture.
Now, not even 6 month later, he is numb. He just wants to be alone, is actively hostile towards Socke and is so so afraid of her owner. He can't be ridden rn because his front left leg tendon is injured. It happens a lot that the couple's horses get injured because they push them to their limits aka mistreat them.
Both of them love nothing more than to share their "wisdom" with you because they are "the only boarders with well behaved horses". They don't even know the names of the horses or most of their owners they share their small part of the stable on the farm with, let alone the other boarders and horses on the farm... They aren't new. They have been here for a decade.
They know nothing about how to treat a horses right and many people and instructors tried to teach them but they wouldn't have it. They were so obnoxious many riding instructor just bailed on them. They punish their horses for shitting in their through or waterer. THEY ARE ANIMALS! They don't get why you are angry! Feel free to be annoyed by this but don't punish your horse for it! What the fuck is wrong with you???
It's the third of six weeks of "no work" for Pelle and I hoped that he could get some rest but the fear of his owner is still there.
He stared to rush into his stall because that is a save place for him like two month after he arrived. He tried to rush into stalles that aren't even his to get away from his owner's.
Pelle got spooked TWICE by seeing his owner on wednesday when my colleague took him from the pasture to his stall. I was right behind him. He had the two young geldings and I the senior. Pelle's owner commented how "funny" that was. My own horse gets jump scared seeing me.... So funny....
I hate her and her husband. They are weird people but I gained their trust by doing my job. Telling them when their horses lost a shoe or informed them about a rug malfunction. They like me now.
Being nice to even the worst borders will give you ammunition. Even if it's just to twaddle.
My boss knows how shitty they treat their horses but they are here for over a decade so it's fine??? My boss is a fucking pushover. His wife and I are the only ones who challenge him. He does mean well but he is the worst people pleaser I have ever met.

I know the ugly yearling stage is a thing, but was that REALLY the best photo you could get of the poor thing?
Also of course it's PSSM positive. -submission
Honestly I can't stop looking at the brand. Is that a dancing stick figure with a halo?
