Do you think readers' lives would be different if they were a deer hybrid?
Fun Fact: Did you know that cervids (from the deer, deer and elk family) are considered extremely sensitive animals. When suffering severe stress, such as when captured or rescued, for example, the animal's reaction can cause what is called 'capture myopathy' ', which compromises the organism of these animals.
I do, actually. Because, another fun fact! In June of this year me and my roommate saved a baby deer who was laying next to her mums dead body (she was less than 48 hours old). Fortunately she wasn’t injured. We were extremely lucky to be living next to a wildlife specialist, our neighbour, who’s been looking after Astrid and will continue to until she’s old enough to be relocated. Thankfully this wasn’t the first deer that’s been brought to her. So unfortunately I'm very acquainted with that fact.
She’s still striving strong though! These were the first pics taken of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, how they’d react:
Batfam x deer hybrid reader
With Damian's exceptionally caring nature when it comes to animals, he has already meticulously planned out the perfect environment for your deer forms comfort. He has considered every possible scenario and tailored everything to ensure your contentment as well as a space to meet all of your needs.
The young Wayne would thoughtfully strategize and visualise your reactions to every minor action or stimulus. He would carefully consider the most appropriate responses and adapt his behaviour to ensure a positive and nurturing environment for you. Even if the environment in question was one that you were forced into.
The bats would handle your transformed state with great caution, disregarding if your human mind was in control when you were transformed or not. Given your affiliation with the Cervidae family in your animal form, the Wayne family would be especially mindful and considerate of your natural tendencies, behaviours, and instincts.
Despite Dick's intelligence and expertise as a vigilante, being second only to Bruce Wayne himself, his impatience would become apparent within the twenty-ninth attempt to approach you for some affectionate ‘big brother cuddles’. Assuming you’re an adult or older teen, you would be extremely skittish and resistant in your deer form to his advances and attempts to get close, if not completely avoid his presence altogether, let alone let him cling to you for a ‘snuggle.’
Jason wouldn’t comprehend why you’d consistently conceal yourself, in both forms, hiding behind the couch every time he arrives, or why you involuntarily freeze at the sound of his motorcycle, or even why you instinctively flee at the slightest hint of him standing or making a move. But despite his confusion, he doesn't hold it against you. He’s witnessed the horrific experiences and trauma the children of Gotham City are subjected to, and if hiding and evading is the way you cope with what you’re going through, then he’s willing to wait patiently for you to feel secure in his presence. As your sibling, he vowed never to give you a reason to fear him. He knows just how overwhelming it is in this new environment, and he’s not planning on giving you any more reasons to be frightened by them.
Tim would find it easier to deal with your distressed nature than the others, opting to monitor you through the security cameras, allowing him to work on his cases simultaneously, rather than being overly affectionate with you. This way, he could keep a watchful eye on you without having to directly interact, which allows him to multi-task and focus on both keeping you safe and solving his cases.
Despite Jason and Dick no longer living in the Manor, Bruce would likely be the one to spend the least time with you. However, he's not neglecting you. He makes a conscious effort to rearrange his busy schedule, keeps certain days free every week, and meticulously plans time for some quality family bonding. Even if the quality time in question only consists of him quietly sitting in your vicinity, sipping on some freshly made tea while reading the newspaper, he cherishes every moment that he gets to share with you. Simply being near you is enough. Because you're his child, and he's not planning on fucking that up ever again.

Roman's primary structure hangs from cables as it moves into the big clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
What Makes the Clean Room So Clean?
When you picture NASA’s most important creations, you probably think of a satellite, telescope, or maybe a rover. But what about the room they’re made in? Believe it or not, the room itself where these instruments are put together—a clean room—is pretty special.
A clean room is a space that protects technology from contamination. This is especially important when sending very sensitive items into space that even small particles could interfere with.
There are two main categories of contamination that we have to keep away from our instruments. The first is particulate contamination, like dust. The second is molecular contamination, which is more like oil or grease. Both types affect a telescope’s image quality, as well as the time it takes to capture imagery. Having too many particles on our instruments is like looking through a dirty window. A clean room makes for clean science!
Tumblr media
Two technicians clean the floor of Goddard’s big clean room.
Our Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland has the largest clean room of its kind in the world. It’s as tall as an eight-story building and as wide as two basketball courts.
Goddard’s clean room has fewer than 3,000 micron-size particles per cubic meter of air. If you lined up all those tiny particles, they’d be no longer than a sesame seed. If those particles were the size of 16-inch (0.4-meter) inflatable beach balls, we’d find only 3,000 spread throughout the whole body of Mount Everest!
Tumblr media
A clean room technician observes a sample under a microscope.
The clean room keeps out particles larger than five microns across, just seven percent of the width of an average human hair. It does this via special filters that remove around 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger from incoming air. Six fans the size of school buses spin to keep air flowing and pressurize the room. Since the pressure inside is higher, the clean air keeps unclean air out when doors open.
Tumblr media
A technician analyzes a sample under ultraviolet light.
In addition, anyone who enters must wear a “bunny suit” to keep their body particles away from the machinery. A bunny suit covers most of the person inside. Sometimes scientists have trouble recognizing each other while in the suits, but they do get to know each other’s mannerisms very well.
Tumblr media
This illustration depicts the anatomy of a bunny suit, which covers clean room technicians from head to toe to protect sensitive technology.
The bunny suit is only the beginning: before putting it on, team members undergo a preparation routine involving a hairnet and an air shower. Fun fact – you’re not allowed to wear products like perfume, lotion, or deodorant. Even odors can transfer easily!
Tumblr media
Six of Goddard’s clean room technicians (left to right: Daniel DaCosta, Jill Bender, Anne Martino, Leon Bailey, Frank D’Annunzio, and Josh Thomas).
It takes a lot of specialists to run Goddard’s clean room. There are 10 people on the Contamination Control Technician Team, 30 people on the Clean Room Engineering Team to cover all Goddard missions, and another 10 people on the Facilities Team to monitor the clean room itself. They check on its temperature, humidity, and particle counts.
Tumblr media
A technician rinses critical hardware with isopropyl alcohol and separates the particulate and isopropyl alcohol to leave the particles on a membrane for microscopic analysis.
Besides the standard mopping and vacuuming, the team uses tools such as isopropyl alcohol, acetone, wipes, swabs, white light, and ultraviolet light. Plus, they have a particle monitor that uses a laser to measure air particle count and size.
The team keeping the clean room spotless plays an integral role in the success of NASA’s missions. So, the next time you have to clean your bedroom, consider yourself lucky that the stakes aren’t so high!

Writing Notes: Relationship Red Flags
Tumblr media
Red flags in a relationship - consist of early warnings your potential partner is pretending to be someone they are not.
While nobody is perfect, there are certain key qualities necessary for someone to be a good partner.
Red flags indicate they don’t possess these essential character traits.
In the honeymoon phase of a relationship, it’s common to want to ignore these sorts of signals.
You might want to believe they’re outliers rather than worthwhile insights into your new partner’s overall character.
Still, early red flags indicate increasing levels of emotional abuse might be down the line as you settle into your relationship.
Some Relationship Red Flags
You might be able to spot common red flags from potential partners. Keep this list in mind when gauging whether someone is worthy of your time and affection:
Abusive behavior: If you notice any sign whatsoever your new partner is willing to engage in emotional or physical abuse to get what they want, terminate the relationship immediately. There is no context in which an abusive relationship of any variety is acceptable. There are many major red flags to look out for, but this is perhaps the most important one of all because it places you in immediate danger.
Clinginess: If your partner shows signs of excessive clinginess, it’s a sign they’re not ready for a relationship. While there might be a fine line between the sort of love bombing that occurs in these scenarios and more healthy displays of affection, the key sign to watch for is whether the other person can maintain their own happiness and contentment as an independent individual. Relying on you as their partner to totally validate their sense of self-esteem is unhealthy for both of you.
Controlling behavior: Look out for signs your new partner might think it’s acceptable to control what you do, who you associate with, or how you spend your time. While relationships require some level of sacrifice, there’s an important distinction between spending quality time with your partner and heeding their commands as if they’re a dictator.
Disrespecting boundaries: It’s reasonable and essential for your new partner to respect boundaries you set about your personal space as an individual. Anything short of this falls under the umbrella of toxic behavior. Your partner needs to give you time to yourself, as well as respect your personal beliefs, values, and standards.
Lack of trust: Possessiveness and jealousy are often symptomatic of mistrust. Trust is a bottom-line foundation for any healthy relationship. Your partner should feel comfortable with you spending time with other friends and family members, just as you should feel comfortable with them doing the same.
Manipulative tendencies: There are many different forms of manipulation in relationships and all of them are red flags. Perhaps your partner gives you the silent treatment when you stand your ground on a point of contention. Maybe they try gaslighting you when you confront them about something they did that upset you. Manipulation of any variety is a deal-breaker.
Narcissism: Keep an eye out for whether your partner always prioritizes their own needs and wants over yours. If they do, you might be dealing with a narcissist. Even if someone doesn’t have a full-blown narcissistic personality disorder, they can still treat you like you’re unimportant. Stand up for yourself in this scenario and exit the relationship.
Substance abuse: Alcoholism and drug abuse are both relationship red flags. Keep in mind: It’s possible someone can suffer from addiction and be a terrific person. Still, if they’re in the throes of a major substance abuse problem, that’s a sign they need to prioritize their own well-being and get help rather than pursue a new relationship. A psychotherapist or addiction specialist is who they need at a time like this, not a new partner.
Recognizing Relationship Red Flags
It can be difficult to know what to do when red flag warnings start cropping up with a potential partner. A few tips to both recognize and address these negative signals:
Consult trusted people. Seek the counsel of loved ones about whether or not a new partner seems like a good fit. Friends and trusted family members will have your best interests at heart. Reach out to a clinical psychologist or another type of mental health professional for further advice.
Go with your gut. Your gut feeling is often worth sticking to when it comes to red flags. You’re unlikely to feel a constant pit in your stomach if you’re in a healthy relationship. Especially if you’ve been in toxic past relationships, you will have a fine-tuned sense of red flag behavior from new partners.
Prioritize stability. Your relationship should be a source of joy for you. If a new partner detracts more than they contribute to your emotional health and wellness, it’s a warning signal you should leave before things get too serious. An unhealthy relationship is far worse than a longer spat of singleness.
Recognize your rose-colored glasses. The early phases of a relationship are when everything seems to be trending in a perfect direction. Still, remember to pay attention to red flags even when you want to get caught up in the moment. It’s better to break up early than to become too invested in an unhealthy situation.
Stick to your standards. Prior to starting a new relationship, set standards for what you want in a partner. Red flags are signs of complete unsuitability, yellow flags are annoyances you could do without, and green flags are signs your new significant other is the right one for you. You will inevitably argue at some point, but perhaps the key sign of a relationship’s health is how well you and your partner love and respect each other through difficulties to achieve conflict resolution.

An astonishingly simple and comprehensive guide to avoiding airborne illness while traveling. Many of these tips work for trips to the pharmacy or grocery store too. Stay safe out there!
By Korin Miller
Whether you’re traveling domestically or heading abroad, feeling your best at your destination means you’ll get the most out of your trip. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is still out there, and cases are expected to climb again as we head into the winter months. By now you’re likely aware of basic COVID prevention strategies, but air travel presents unique challenges that can be tricky to navigate.
Luckily, you can take steps to lower the odds of picking up the illness on your next flight. To help you do just that, we asked doctors and health policy researchers how they lower their COVID risk while flying. Here’s what they recommend.
Wear a mask—before you’re even on the plane Many of us know this already, but it’s worth recalling: Research has found that wearing a well-fitting, high-quality mask like an N95 or KN95 lowers your chances of picking up COVID-19 by 83%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But when you wear a mask during your travels matters, says William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
“You really want to use your mask consistently around others, whether you’re in the airport or on that plane,” he says. Thomas A. Russo, MD, professor and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University at Buffalo’s medical school, agrees. “Think about the whole process when you fly—going through the airport, checking in, boarding the plane, and being on the plane—you’re going to interact with people from all parts of the world… There’s a risk you might get COVID,” he says.
You can help protect yourself by always keeping your mask on—and wearing a relatively new one. Compared to a mask that’s gotten a lot of use, a fresh one will fit more snugly around the nose, cheeks, and chin and, in turn, catch particles more effectively.
Put the air vent to good use If you prefer not to wear a mask, you should take steps to protect yourself in other ways. For example, after you get to your seat, adjust the vent so the air blows over your face, suggests Sheldon H. Jacobson, PhD, a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor and researcher whose work includes using data-driven risk assessments to inform public health policy.
Dr. Jacobson says most airplanes use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that catch microbes. Plus, cabin air is refreshed every few minutes, and a good portion comes from outside the aircraft. As a result, what blows out of the vents is pretty fresh. This strategy also keeps the air around you moving faster, meaning there’s less time for you to inhale any possible germs in the cabin, according to Dr. Jacobson. Still, if the person sitting next to you is coughing and sneezing, it’s best to wear a mask if you have one, he says. The filtration system can only do so much in that instance—and it’s not always on before takeoff and after landing.
Be mindful about how you eat and drink If you can, Dr. Russo suggests eating before you get to the airport to lessen the number of times you’ll need to remove your mask when you’re around other people. If you need to dine at the airport, Dr. Schaffner recommends looking for seating away from crowded areas.
When masks were still required for air travel, the suggested strategy for eating and drinking on board was to wait until your fellow fliers finished their snacks and refreshments. But now, Dr. Russo points out, the people around you may not mask up at all. Instead, he suggests dropping your mask, taking a sip or bite, and immediately pulling it back up. This lowers the odds you’ll breathe in viral particles that may be floating around, he explains.
Plan your vaccine around your trip Dr. Schaffner and Dr. Russo recommend getting the updated COVID-19 vaccine about two weeks before your trip. “It’s a good strategy,” Dr. Russo says. It usually takes 14 days or so for your body to build up immunity to COVID after getting vaccinated, according to the World Health Organization. This means your body should be ready to fight the virus by the time you fly, Dr. Russo says. Immunity also fades over time, making the timing of your shot important, he says.
Wash your hands…a lot Experts say you’re more likely to get COVID-19 from breathing in infectious droplets and particles than from touching things. But there’s still a chance you could get sick if you happen to touch a contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose, or mouth.
“What we’ve learned is that transmission from this virus from inanimate objects is very low, but it’s not zero,” Dr. Russo says. That’s why he recommends good hand hygiene while flying. You should wash your hands with soap and water, making sure to scrub for at least 20 seconds, and do so often: before and after security, whenever you use the bathroom, and before eating or touching your face. Hand sanitizer is also a good option in a pinch, Dr. Russo says. But he stresses that keeping your hands clean shouldn’t replace masking up. “It’s much, much less helpful than wearing a mask,” he says.

my first instinct upon seeing this was to get angry and want to hit this person with hammers, but actually I want to talk about this.
this post, and I didn't even want to click in the read the rest bc it made me to sad to see, is saying that Wilson and Amber only dated for a maximum of three months, so should he really be this torn up about her loss?
So, as a grief support specialist and house fan, let's talk about it.
First and foremost, it's the depth, not the length, of a relationship that matters. Quality over quantity, all of that. Of course. But also, if we look at Amber and Wilson's relationship itself, this is kind of the first time Wilson is in a relationship that feels really good to him. Amber doesn't just want Wilson bc she needs him and needs to be put first by him, she wants him to take care of himself too. He's being challenged for the first time (in a romantic context) (canonically) to not put himself on the back burner for everyone else, but to think about what Wilson wants. House, of course, does this too, but in different ways. Which is also to say that Amber is a revelation for him because she is like House--House who is his longest and arguably only real friend, the person he trusts the most, is most able to be himself around. And now he's found this person who he can feel all that in a romantic and sexual context too.
Which is all to say that this relationship wasn't like any other three month fling he had, this one had a depth to it from the very beginning that was really important and profound to Wilson, and was changing some parts of himself in a way that was really kind of life altering, even as it was also pretty subtle in many ways to the casual viewer.
This, plus the fact that her death itself was really sudden, very traumatic, and prolonged (a couple days and many really traumatic failed attempts to save her life, including his best friend risking his life for her), really adds up to someone being profoundly affected by this loss.
But beyond this, Wilson did not only experience the loss of Amber with her death. There are losses we grieve beyond simply dying. The whole experience before finding out she was even missing and hurt, of seeing House without memory, of even for a little while thinking they may have had an affair, of watching House kill himself (literally) to bring back his memories - this portion of the situation alone is an experience of a loss of safety. He's realizing that life is random, and terrifying in a whole new way than he may have known it before. His best friend was in a bus accident. Life is random and he could have died. There is no guaranteed safety. His best friend who knows everything suddenly knows nothing. A loss of the status quo, of what he's assumed is the way things are. he's watching his best friend go to extreme lengths in order to capture his memories. he's watching his best friend fucking die on a bus floor as he tries to revive him with his boss. Loss of control, loss of the norm, loss of the future they could have had if none of this happened.
THEN.!! He's made aware that Amber was involved in all of this. And we don't know where she is or how she's doing. He's now been introduced to ambiguous loss (which he has experienced at great length with his brother who went missing, and is now experiencing again). Now they have to find Amber. Okay and now they've found her and she's in a coma and really on the brink of death. And this too is an ambiguous loss of another variety. He's experiencing both sides of ambiguous loss about Amber back to back (1. Physical absence and psychological presence (ex. someone missing/estranged) 2. Physical presence and psychological absence (ex. parent w dementia, someone in a coma))
He then has to skip over the grieving part and jump into problem solving and trying to keep her alive. and then his boy best friend has to risk his life for amber and wilson and almost die. And then Wilson has to realize that now, his kind of technically-alive-but-not girlfriend, he has to let her go. And she's woken up and he has mere moments to say his goodbyes and I love you's.
And ALL OF THAT is just the loss itself.
Then he is "grieving" or "mourning" in the way that is generally understood by the average person. If you ask the average person (esp in the US) what grief is, they'd usually point to this--after someone dies when you're sad--and none of the many paragraphs of grief and loss grappling I wrote about just before that.
The average bereavement leave is 3 days. Grief will invariably last more than three days. The amount of time we see Wilson grieving is frankly, really fucking regular. Even for a death less fraught and traumatic (subjectively) than this one.
Besides all of this, there are a number of different grief styles, and I think that Wilson's grief style is that of the Intuitive, or Heart, Griever (isn't that just perfect? I wonder if the writers knew that when they named the episode Wilson's Heart...).
This type of griever is more overtly emotional than the Intellectual, or Head, Griever (the other 2 styles are the Blended, or Head & Heart Griever, and the Dissonant, or Head vs Heart Griever). But is again, really common! Perhaps the asker of this original Reddit question is a head griever, or a dissonant griever, or perhaps even someone who has never yet had to grieve, and has only been fed the myths about grief, and they're trying to make sense of such a large grief.
There is no right way to grieve, there is no correct length of time that that grieving should last. There's no correct amount of time you are allowed to know someone before you grieve their death or pain. The way you grieve is the way you need to grieve, you simply have to try to honor it.
(I don't have a reddit so I can't respond to this directly, but feel free to link this in the responses to the post itself if you feel so inclined)

Considering Alexander’s official version of history vs what historians know today, what is the thing Alexander was trying to hide the most?
Quite an interesting query. There’s one big problem with answering it, however: we don’t have Alexander’s official releases. That would be Kallisthenes’s account, and it’s among those early Alexander histories lost to time.
A quick reminder: our earliest still-existing Alexander history is Diodoros’s, and he was writing in the middle/late first century BCE. His last known work dates to 21 BCE, and the Bibliotheka Historika (World History) dates between 60-30 BCE, with the Philip/Alexander/Successors portions (Books 16-20) written around the middle. (The full Bibliotheka was 40 books; only portions of it survive.) Alexander died in 323 BCE…almost 300 years before any of it.
What survives is one part luck and one part quality and another bit of luck, part II. We have (maybe) a quarter of what was actually written in ancient Greece and Rome.
While Diodoros, Plutarch, and others may have used parts of Kallisthenes’ reports, it wasn’t their primary source. Arrian tells us that he preferenced Ptolemy and Aristobulos, Diodoros used Kleitarchos, while Curtius also used Kleitarchos as well as others, including Kallisthenes, and Plutarch used a mishmash of what he could get his hands on. THEN they modified it. This isn’t like a lazy high school student’s term paper, cut-and-pasted from 19 different places. I kinda wish some of them HAD worked like that. Ha. They’re all writing to show off their own literary mastery, which meant, yes, showing how well-read they were…then do something new and unique with it. It’s more akin to that annoying friend who has to pepper conversation with quotes from Shakespeare or other literary giants. Arrian even went so far as to write the Anabasis in the same dialect of Greek as Xenophon wrote his Anabasis, then to write his Indika in the same dialect of Greek that Herodotos wrote the Histories. That’s some serious showboat mimicry going on, no?
But none of it is exact copying.
That means, even when we know/strongly suspect they’re lifting from Kallisthenes, we can’t be sure it’s Kallisthenes’ actual words, or even the gist. How have they repurposed it?
For instance, if your annoying Shakespeare quoting buddy claims someone you both know is “but mad north-northwest,” they just mean the person is off their rocker sometimes (and maybe deliberately pretending), not that they’re a prince of Denmark in a play about revenge. So, they may be relating things about Alexander gleaned from Kallisthenes, but using that information in completely new ways. (See the embedded video below where I explain lost sources in a little more detail.)
So, what that means is that we can only “suppose” what Alexander’s official version actually WAS…and the specialists may disagree about it.
Let’s take the Burning of Persepolis. Here, archaeology reveals the actual fire was controlled, contradicting accounts in the sources, which either gloss it, or exaggerate it into something like a drunken frat party gone horribly wrong. So how did that wild story get started? And why was the tossing-of-torches led by an Athenian courtesan (Thaïs)? WHERE did that story come from?
Apparently, Kleitarchos. But where did Kleitarchos get it? He wasn’t there.
I’d propose we look at what really happened: a controlled burn of the royal platform after everything of worth had been carried out or pried off the walls, specifically aimed at erasing (damnio memoriae) the hated Xerxes. Darius the Great’s stuff was left untouched. That was a message for the Persians. But it’s not the message Alexander wanted to send back to Greece. So I’d propose that the “official” (Greek) version was that the palace was burned down not just by an Athenian, but an Athenian “whore” at that—the ultimate insult!—in revenge for the earlier Persian burning (by Xerxes) of Athens.
“Mission Accomplished.”
Kleitarchos got a hold of it and turned it into a Dionysian komos. (His history was, we know, rather sensational—probably why it was so popular. The ancient version of The National Enquirer or The Daily Mail.)
Not all my colleagues would agree with that reading. I’m reconstructing it based on what’s in the sources, what we know from history of Greek attitudes, and what the archaeology tells us. Someone else might reconstruct it a different way. We don’t actually know what Kallisthenes wrote about it, to send home to Greece.
So, the answer to the question is…I’ve no idea what he might have put out as the official version in order to hide something else. We can only guess. What we CAN say is that he was a master of propaganda—but not everybody in Greece bought into what he was selling. And some (as with Demosthenes & Friends, like an ancient Fox&Friends) would have hated anything he did because he was a Macedonian and Philip’s son.

I should probably add, the companion video to that one above, about the lost historians themselves:

One of a Kind 1,500-Year-Old Roman ‘Lorica Squamata’ Legion Armor Restored
The 1,500-year-old Roman ‘Lorica Squamata’ legion armor, the only known example in the world, found in the ancient city of Satala in the village of Sadak in the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane in the Black Sea region of Türkiye, was restored.
Archaeological excavations continue in the ancient city of Satala, the only surviving castle on the eastern border of the Roman Empire and the only Roman Legion castle in Anatolia that can be excavated. and this unique artifact was unearthed during the 2020 excavation season.
The ancient city of Satala, where the 15th Legion of the Roman Empire, also known as the Apollinaris Legion, ruled for 600 years, is a well-known castle visited by Rome’s five emperors.
In a remarkable feat of preservation, the only known example of a “Lorica Squamata” model Roman legionary armor, dating back 1,500 years, has been successfully restored in Türkiye.
The completion of the restoration was announced by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism on its social media account.
Tumblr media
The armor was first found and removed from the location in 2021 with assistance from the Ankara Regional Laboratory. It was then moved to the Erzurum Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory. Erzurum Atatürk University carried out a thorough examination, which included tomography and X-rays, to record the armor in its soil-encrusted state.
X-ray results revealed that almost the entire armor was intact. Micro CT imaging of a three-plate block taken from the edges helped determine the armor’s full measurements and partial metallurgical properties.
The conservation and restoration procedures were finished after three years of painstaking labor by the Erzurum Regional Directorate of Restoration and Conservation Laboratory. The armor was then resewn, returning it to its original form.
According to the ministry’s statement, the armor dates back to the Late Roman Period. It is a significant example of the Lorica Squamata type, noted for being the first known to the world.
During the Roman era, legionary armor was not made to order; instead, it was repaired and reused as needed. Surviving examples are extremely rare these days because, once damaged beyond repair, they were melted down and used for new purposes.
Tumblr media
During the height of the Roman Empire, the Lorica Squamata was a common type of armor worn by military officers and specialists such as musicians or standard bearers. In certain provinces, it may have also been used to outfit entire regiments of Auxilia infantry, archers, and cavalrymen. Later in the Empire’s history, troops frequently used scaled armor as a form of protection.
Scaled Armor was very difficult to cut through and offered a strong, reliable defense for the wearer. In addition, the armor’s overlapping scales provided some absorptive qualities against concussive force. Usually, the scales were between.5 and.8 mm thick to keep the armor’s total weight under control.

About the cost of child birth that was talked about here recently; I've got a story to tell because you can't write Germany without bureaucracy. (By someone who isn't an ethnic German and just has to shake her head at this like everyone else)
Every year my husband's health insurance wants us to fill out a form about our family status as in are we still as many people as last year. It's complete bullshit but Germany. That year, we were several months late to do it and then a new baby was born anyway.
A month or two after the birth, I got a letter from the hospital. In it was the bill for my stay and delivery. The only reason why I got that bill was because of the form that our insurance hadn't processed at that point so for the hospital it looked like I wasn't insured. (Why the insurance threw me out at all, I have no idea).
The issue was resolved the minute I showed the bill to a clerk from my insurance. I literally just said "I got this in the mail" and she immediately answered with "that shouldn't have happened" then she looked at my info on her computer and said that everything is already cleared up.
Anyway, I got to keep the bill so now I can tell all of you what an uninsured stay for a birth at a hospital in Germany looks like.
I was at the hospital for 6 nights; 2 pre-birth for inducing labour, 1 emergency cesarean, 4 post-birth, I had midwives look after me, I used a breast pump, one specialist visited me to help with breastfeeding, and the first doctor's appointment for the baby also happened there. I had three meals every day.
Total cost: 5,400€
Costs I paid out of pocket: parking but not really
The cesarean was the biggest chunk of the costs with 3,700€ but my baby urinated on the main surgeon so that's fair. The next biggest cost were my nights I stayed there with a total of 1,400€.
Everything else was either some one or double digit additional charges for things like "quality of control" and other stuff I can't be bothered to translate with 11 separate "items" on this list.

Wheelchair excitement is being more than slightly dampened by concern that either my insurance is going to deny me and I won't be allowed to pay for the chair myself because I have Medicade OR that the physical/occupational therapist and/or wheelchair assessment people will decide I don't actually need one despite my primary, who again is a former EDS specialist and is very certain my quality of life is bad enough I need one, and turn me away.
Like my mom has gotten a wheelchair through Medicaid basically her whole life and she told me that the assessment people aren't allowed to turn you down, they are ONLY there to help you decide what chair will best fit you and take the needed measurements and make adjustments once it's made, the only person who can decide if I truly need one is my doctor and the prescription is the final say, but most of the stuff I've been finding online about the process is saying the assessment people are part of the initial decision about my need for one and their say has just as much weight as the doctor writing the prescription, and I am sadly WELL AWARE of how anti-mobility aid a lot of physical therapists can be so the thought of getting that far and being shut down is concerning me greatly.
I'm also worried my insurance will only approve me for one of those manual transport/hospital drive ones that are too heavy and weirdly built for the passenger to propell themselves meaningfully on their own...I know I can fight it and one of those straight up will not work for me but still. Also I've heard Medicaid will refuse to pay for one if you don't need to use it inside the house, which I won't need mine for that plus my house is way too small for me to even use it in here at all, and I guess I could lie but eugh I am not good at that.
I probably shouldn't worry until I actually get in touch with the assessment people, and tbh when I called them earlier this year to ask what the process was they told me all I need to see them is a prescription from my doctor so I'm really praying everything goes smoothly but like shit typically does NOT go smoothly for me so I know my ass is just gonna be freaking out and over thinking it the entire time.
I just really need this chair. My quality of life is gone, it's so hard for me to even find the will to do the things I need to to regain what mobility I can because I know it will never be enough to allow me to actually do the things I want to do and I don't get to do anything fun in the meantime so I'm just depressed about this constantly, and I truly do not know how much longer I can sit here and watch my entire life go by without me. I want to be able to run errands and spent time with my family and go to museums and parks(masked ofc) and go to school and it is abundantly clear that no amount of knee braces, pain meds, and physical therapy will get me there, so it is truly cruel and unfair to say I should just not do all that because the thing that would let me do it at all is somehow "bad" for me.
I deserve the dignity of risk. I deserve to give informed consent. I deserve to be treated like the fucking adult I am who is more than capable of doing physical therapy and other exercises at home to maintain my muscles and mobility. I can be trusted to know when it's appropriate to use my aids and when it isn't. I am so FUCKING sick of being treated like a literal child by doctors who insist if I get in the chair I will simply give up and never walk again, I'm almost 30, I have self control, I'm not lazy. Every single activity I have given up, be it work or hiking or walks has claw marks in it, I am the opposite of lazy.
I just don't think I can take much more of my life being denied to me by abled people who clearly think all disabled people are lazy idiots who can't be trusted to make their own decisions. I genuinely cannot take it. If this doesn't work I don't know what I'll do.
(I think for now to temper the anxiety I'm going to write down all the measures I've tried to fix myself(PT, knee braces, rollator, ect.) and why they haven't been enough to achieve the VERY REASONABLE goals I have for myself. Also all the ways my current medical conditions limit me. That should help me feel more like I can actually convince the right people that we are well past the time that this should have been considered. Fingers crossed anyway.)

Drying Herbs
How to Dry Herbs
Tumblr media
Drying is the easiest method of preserving herbs. Simply expose the leaves, flowers or seeds to warm, dry air. Leave the herbs in a well ventilated area until the moisture evaporates. Sun drying is not recommended because the herbs can lose flavor and color.
The best time to harvest most herbs for drying is just before the flowers first open when they are in the bursting bud stage. Gather the herbs in the early morning after the dew has evaporated to minimize wilting. Avoid bruising the leaves. They should not lie in the sun or unattended after harvesting. Rinse herbs in cool water and gently shake to remove excess moisture. Discard all bruised, soiled or imperfect leaves and stems.
Dehydrator drying is a fast and easy way to dry high quality herbs because temperature and air circulation can be controlled. Pre-heat dehydrator with the thermostat set to 95°F to 115°F. In areas with higher humidity, temperatures as high as 125°F may be needed. After rinsing under cool, running water and shaking to remove excess moisture, place the herbs in a single layer on dehydrator trays. Drying times may vary from 1 to 4 hours. Check periodically. Herbs are dry when they crumble, and stems break when bent. Check your dehydrator instruction booklet for specific details.
Less Tender Herbs — The more sturdy herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, summer savory and parsley are the easiest to dry without a dehydrator. Tie them into small bundles and hang them to air dry. Air drying outdoors is often possible; however, better color and flavor retention usually results from drying indoors.
Tender-Leaf Herbs — Basil, oregano, tarragon, lemon balm and the mints have a high moisture content and will mold if not dried quickly. Try hanging the tender-leaf herbs or those with seeds inside paper bags to dry. Tear or punch holes in the sides of the bag. Suspend a small bunch (large amounts will mold) of herbs in a bag and close the top with a rubber band. Place where air currents will circulate through the bag. Any leaves and seeds that fall off will be caught in the bottom of the bag.
Another method, especially nice for mint, sage or bay leaf, is to dry the leaves separately. In areas of high humidity, it will work better than air drying whole stems. Remove the best leaves from the stems. Lay the leaves on a paper towel, without allowing leaves to touch. Cover with another towel and layer of leaves. Five layers may be dried at one time using this method. Dry in a very cool oven. The oven light of an electric range or the pilot light of a gas range furnishes enough heat for overnight drying. Leaves dry flat and retain a good color.
Microwave ovens are a fast way to dry herbs when only small quantities are to be prepared. Follow the directions that come with your microwave oven.
When the leaves are crispy dry and crumple easily between the fingers, they are ready to be packaged and stored. Dried leaves may be left whole and crumpled as used, or coarsely crumpled before storage. Husks can be removed from seeds by rubbing the seeds between the hands and blowing away the chaff. Place herbs in airtight containers and store in a cool, dry, dark area to protect color and fragrance. Dried herbs are usually 3 to 4 times stronger than the fresh herbs. To substitute dried herbs in a recipe that calls for fresh herbs, use 1/4 to 1/3 of the amount listed in the recipe.

Petal Ninja (Ninja Archetype; Ghoran)
Tumblr media
(art from Wilderness Origins, taken from Nathaniel James’ Artstation)
Today marks the end of the final first-party ninja archetype (there were only 5, admittedly) that we’ll be covering on the blog, so let’s take a look!
It’s hard to do characters that are flashy and over the top while also having them with a job that ostensibly requires them to be stealthy most of the time. More often than not, this is played for laughs when the former quality absolutely shattering any illusions of succeeding at the latter.
However, it is important to remember that there are many ways to conceal oneself, and one such way is distraction and discombobulation.
Plenty achieve this with fire or various tricks to inhibit the senses, but for characters with magical abilities, sometimes the answer is a little more green.
Originating with ghorans and almost certainly limited to other planty folk like leshies or perhaps the very rare humanoid, I present the petal ninja, a specialist in conjuring and transmuting oneself into clouds of petals and pollen to befuddle foes and avoid notice.
No doubt you’ve seen plenty of visual media where a character vanishes or reappears in a cloud of leaves or petals (most commonly sakura blossoms), as well as using such whirlwinds of plant matter to befuddle their foes, and that’s exactly what these ninja do, tipping this particular sort of ninja into the “supernatural badass” zone.
Some might fight to protect their people using subterfuge, while others may be little more than mercenaries. Regardless, petal ninjas has a reputation for being able to sneak into impossible places, perhaps more so than even other shinobi.
So, with that in mind, let’s take a look and see what they have to work with!
With an expenditure of ki and focus, these ninja can conjure up swirling storms of petals nearby. At their base level, they provide concealment for them, making them hard to hit and easy to hide in. However, by focusing, they can add in additional effect, ranging from being near-blinding to infused with toxic pollen to even be mesmerizing, forcing foes to make saves against increasingly more harmful effects. However, this comes at a cost. The more they focus on the potency of their clouds, the less they can focus on their enemy’s vitals, reducing the amount of harm they can do with attacks that strike for their foe’s weak points until the storm passes.
They can also transform themselves into a cloud of petals for a few seconds, becoming insubstantial but not invicible. However, it can be difficult to tell them apart from any other cluster of plant matter, making it easy for them to vanish, drop into hiding and strike foes from a new angle, or simply use it to pass into a secure location through holes small enough to let delicate flower petals through.
They also have an ability to alter local light levels, creating areas of darkness or brighter light as needed, perhaps to thwart enemy ninja or harm the eyes of light-sensitive foes.
While a ninja thrives on being completely undetected, these shinobi specialize in battlefield control when stealth fails and they must fight. The conjured storms of petals are perfect for combat stealth to get a foe to lose track of you while you set up sneak attack after sneak attack, and adding additional effects is useful for debilitating or suppressing foes when corralling and weakening foes is more important than setting up the killing blow. What’s more, the ability to briefly become a cloud of petals is not just good for mobility, but also for getting out of a scrape while simultaneously setting up for another attack or clean getaway. The ability to alter light levels is… neat, but only super useful if the lighting is already within one stage of what you want it to be. Spending multiple ki points to try and turn an area of bright light into total darkness is a waste. Beyond that, however, I recommend a build with other battlefield control options, as well as tricks that add additional debilitating effects to your sneak attack, negating the reduced damage that comes with making use of their abilities.
Vanishing into flower petals and reappearing again is a powerful aesthetic that I’m sure we can all appreciate, and that signature style no doubt is very precious to the ghoran people, a thing that they created, which despite being unique enough to put the potential blame on their kind after a job, makes it perfect for sending a message when needed.
Having dedicated their life to protecting societal order, but realizing that doing so meant sometimes in “pruning” undesirable elements, Serenity the aphorite chose to become a shinobi, one specializing in using their cosmic dust to befuddle foes and vanish from sight. Now, they serve as a mercenary, taking contracts against anarchists and those who abuse the law alike, as long as their client provides incontrovertible proof first.
The ghoran village of Tsubaki has long been guarded from intruders by it’s guardian shinobi, that use their vanishing arts to lure those that seek their village astray, getting them lost in the confusing forests until their expire. However, this has led to a growing problem with trailgaunts, as the poor souls they abandon arise as perpetually lost but ever malevolent undead.
After nearly being killed by assassins despite being a humble locksmith, the ghoran Aelgar is forced to seek out a master of dream magic to delve into the vague memories of his very first life and incarnation. In this dream, he is confronted by a powerful ninja that vanishes and reappears in a cloud of blossoms, and the shadow of the one this past self wronged.
