So we've been using a coffee maker for the last year or two as a catch all for coffee, tea, and also making broth from bouillon cubes. Well lately I've been making coffee but only like a half cup at a time to make iced coffee and I was like man this is kind of a waste of grounds and time and a coffeemaker doesn't really do the good grounds I got justice. So I did some Looking and we've updated our setup to a kettle and a pour over carafe and I justified the switch to my roommates who are staunch tea drinkers by telling them that it would make better tea as well. They didn't seem to think the difference would be that big but I fuckin showed them that tea is banger now that its made with actual boiling water. The carafe is mad convenient too I see why some people are very invested in making coffee this way

How to make meth
Making Methamphetamine at home:
List of chemicals and materials:
Diluted HCl - also called Muriatic acid - can be obtained from hardware stores, in the pool section
NaOH - also called lye
Ethyl Ether - aka Diethyl Ether - Et-0-Et - can be obtained from engine starting fluid, usually from a large supermarket. Look for one that says "high ethyl ether content", such as Prestone
Ephedrine The cottons in todays vicks nasle inhalers dont contain efed or pfed (ephedrin or psuedoephedrin) but there are still lots of easy ways to get good ephed or pfed, pure ephedrin can be extracted out of it's plant matter, from a plant that can be bought at most garden stores. Or you can get pfed from decongestive pills like sudafed. Most people perfer to work with pfed from pills rather then ephed from the plant. The important thing is that you must have pure pfed/ephed as any contaminants will fuck up the molar ratio leaving you with over-reduced shit or under-reduced shit. Or contaminats will jell durring baseifying and gak up your product which will then be very hard to clean. So you want to find a pill that is nearly pure pfed hcl, or as close to pure as you can get. Also check the lable on your pills and see what inactive ingredients they contain. Inactive ingredients are things like binders and flavors. These you dont want and will remove when cleaning your pills. but certain inactive ingredients are harder to remove then others. You dont want pills with a red coating, you dont want pills with alot of cellose in them and you dont want pills with much wax. you also dont want pills that contain povidone. As a rule, if you have a two pills that contain the same amount of pfed hcl then take the smaller sized pill because it obviously has less binders and inactive ingredients, time released pills are usualy harder to work with because they have more binders and tend to gel up durring the a/b stage. Also only buy pills that have pfed hcl as the only active ingredient. You first have to make ephedrine (which is sometimes sold as meth by itself):If you are selling it...I would just make ephedrine and say it's meth.
Distilled water - it's really cheap, so you have no reason to use the nasty stuff from the tap. Do things right.
List of equipment :
A glass eyedropper
Three small glass bottles with lids (approx. 3 oz., but not important)one should be marked at 1.5oz, use tape on the outside to mark it (you might want to label it as ether). One should be clear (and it can't be the marked one).
A Pyrex dish (the meatloaf one is suggested)
A glass quart jar
Sharp scissors
Clean rubber gloves
Coffee filters
A measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Preparing your Lab:
Preparing Ethyl Ether:
WARNING: Ethyl Ether is very flammable and is heavier than air. Do not use ethyl ether near flame or non-sparkless motors. It is also an anaesthetic and can cause respiratory collapse if you inhale too much.
Take the unmarked small bottle and spray starter fluid in it until it looks half-full. Then fill the rest of the way with water, cap the bottle and shake for 5 minutes. Let it sit for a minute or two, and tap the side to try and separate the clear upper layer. Then, draw off the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, and throw away the lower (water) and cloudy layer. Place the ether in the marked container. Repeat this until you have about 1.5 oz. of ether. Put the cap on it, and put it in the freezer if you can. Rinse the other bottle and let it stand.
Ethyl ether is very pungent. Even a small evaporated amount is quite noticeable.
Ephedrine & or P-Ephedrine: Please discuss this on the neonjoint forum
5. Pour 1/8 teaspoon of the lye crystals into the bottle of ephedrine and agitate. Do this carefully, as the mixture will become hot, and give off hydrogen gas and/or steam. H2 gas is explosive and lighter than air, avoid any flames as usual. Repeat this step until the mixture remains cloudy. This step neutralizes the HCl in the salt, leaving the insoluble free base (l-desoxyephedrine) again. Why do we do this? So that we can get rid of any water-soluble impurities. For 3 oz. bottles, this should take only 3 repetitions or so.
6. Fill the bottle from step 5 up the rest of the way with ethyl ether. Cap the bottle, and agitate for about 8 minutes. It is very important to expose every molecule of the free-base to the ether for as long as possible. This will cause the free base to dissolve into the ether (it -is- soluble in ether).
7. Let the mixture settle. There will be a middle layer that is very thick. Tap the side of the bottle to get this layer as thin as possible. This is why this bottle should be clear.
8. Remove the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, being careful not to get any of the middle layer in it. Place the removed ether layer into a third bottle.
9. Add to the third bottle enough water to fill it half-way and about 5 drops of muriatic acid. Cap it. Shake the bottle for 2 minutes. When it settles, remove the top layer and throw it away. The free base has now been bonded to the HCl again, forming a water soluble salt. This time, we're getting rid of ether-soluble impurities. Make sure to get rid of all the ether before going to step 11!
10. If there is anything left from step 3, repeat the procedure with it.
11. Evaporate the solution in the Pyrex dish on low heat. You can do this on the stove or nuke it in the microwave (be careful of splashing), but I have found that if you leave it on top of a hot-water heater (like the one that supplies hot water to your house) for about 2-3 days, the remaining crystals will be ephedrine HCl.
If you microwave it, I suggest no more than 5-10s at one time. If it starts "popping", that means you have too little liquid left to microwave. You can put it under a bright (100W) lamp instead. Microwaving can result in uneven heating, anyway.
First Batch: 120mg ephedrine HClEstimated: 300mg (100% of theoretical, disregarding HCl)
Now, Making Methamphetamine out of ephedrine by reducing it with Hydroiodic Acid and Red Phosphorus.
Items needed:
Alot of matchbooks (the kind with the striking pad)
Coffee filters (or filter paper)
Something that measures ml and grams
A flask (a small pot with a lid can be used)
iodine
Hydroiodic Acid (I will tell you how to make this)
Red Phosphorus (I will tell you how to make this)
Lye
*Optional (toluene and HCI gas)
Making Red Phosphorus:
The striking pad on books of matches is about 50% red phosphorus. The determined experimenter could obtain a pile of red phosphorus by scraping off the striking pads of matchbooks with a sharp knife. A typical composition of the striking pad is about 50% red phosphorus, along with about 30% antimony sulfide, and lesser amounts of glue, iron oxide, MnO2, and glass powder. I don't think these contaminants will seriously interfere with the reaction. Naturally, it is a tedious process to get large amounts of red phosphorus by scraping the striking pads off matchbooks, but who cares?
Making Hydroiodic Acid:
This is made by mixing iodine and red phosphorus. When making hydroiodic acid from iodine and red phosphorus, the acid is prepared first, and allowed to come to complete reaction for 20 minutes before adding the ephedrine to it. The way around the roadblock here is to just boil off some more of the water from the ephedrine extract, and make the acid mixture in fresh pure water. Since the production of HI from iodine and red phosphorus gives off a good deal of heat, it is wise to chill the mixture in ice, and slowly add the iodine crystals to the red phosphorus-water mixture.
Now, Making Methamphetamine:
To do the reaction, a 1000 ml round bottom flask is filled with 150 grams of ephedrine. Also added to the flask are 40 grams of red phosphorus and 340 ml of 47% hydroiodic acid. This same acid and red phosphorus mixture can be prepared from adding 150 grams of iodine crystals to 150 grams of red phosphorus in 300 ml of water. This should produce the strong hydroiodic acid solution needed. Exactly how strong the acid needs to be, I can't say . With the ingredients mixed together in the flask, a condenser is attached to the flask, and the mixture is boiled for one day. This length of time is needed for best yields and highest octane numbers on the product. While it is cooking, the mixture is quite red and messy looking from the red phosphorus floating around in it.When one day of boiling under reflux is up, the flask is allowed to cool, then it is diluted with an equal volume of water. Next, the red phosphorus is filtered out. A series of doubled up coffee filters will work to get out all the red phosphorus, but real filter paper is better. The filtered solution should look a golden color. A red color may indicate that all the red phosphorus is not yet out. If so, it is filtered again. The filtered-out phosphorus can be saved for use in the next batch. If filtering does not remove the red color, there may be iodine floating around the solution. It can be removed by adding a few dashes of sodium bisulfate or sodium thiosulfate.The next step in processing the batch is to neutralize the acid. A strong lye solution is mixed up and added to the batch while shaking until the batch is strongly basic. This brings the meth out as liquid free base floating on top of the water. The strongly basic solution is shaken vigorously to ensure that all the meth has been converted to the free base. You now can sell or use the free base for injection use or with free base meth now obtained, the next step you can do is to form the crystalline hydrochloride salt of meth. To do this, a few hundred mls of toluene is added to the batch, and the meth free base extracted out as usual. If the chemist's cooking has been careful, the color of the toluene extract will be clear to pale yellow. If this is the case, the product is sufficiently pure to make nice white crystals just by bubbling dry HCl gas through the toluene extract. If the toluene extract is darker colored, a distillation is called for to get pure meth free base. The yield of pure methamphetamine hydrochloride should be from 100 to 110 grams.

Celebrating July 4th in Strange Times, Pt 2
Of a Too-hot Kitchen, the Sauce, the Meatballs, and the Tater Sallid.
I got goin' as soon as I felt caffeinated, glad I did, as far as time required to get things done. Had to tell my self not to lose focus or get distracted a few times, and things are done, except the oven-roasting of the chicken thighs slathered with The Sauce, which can happen about 5pm. By 1pm kitchen was too hot, so cooling breaks of running back to my room for five-ten mins and back out ensued.
First things first today: Start The Sauce & The Tater Sallid.
for The Sauce:
1 lg yellow onion, finely sliced, and then minced...very finely chopped!
Start clarifying that in about 2 tblspns butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in a teaspoon of salt and about the same in coarse-ground pepper.
6 -8 large cloves of garlic, finely minced, thrown into the pot with the butter and onion mix. Stir and don't let burn. You want extremely clarified onion/garlic bits, speckled with black pepper.
Once you get there, dump in 16 oz tomato sauce, stir and mix thoroughly.
Now pour in 1/2 cup Grandma's Molasses, stir in.
Add in 1 cup Heinz ketchup, and 1/4 cup white vinegar, stir vigorously.
Stir in 1 heaping teaspoon of coarse-stone-ground mustard.
Now pour in 1 cup strong black coffee. Stir it in until you've got a mixture that's pulling together.
Now keep on the back burner to "cook down" until it is a thick, viscous and clingy goo. Perfect for stickin' to da chicken.

Now throw on the potatoes to boil: 4 or 5 lbs of either red potatoes or goldens. You want a waxier tater for this, rather than a gritty one like a russet. Yeah...boil them quickly, salted water to cover by at least a couple inches. Twenty -thirty minutes tops. Until the skins are cracking. Drain and allow to cool for about 20 minutes.
While that's happening, hard-boil 4-5 eggs, depending on what size they are. These were tiny mediums, so I'm using 5. Bring to a boil, cover, remove from heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Voila. Peel.
Meanwhile, chop one big-ass RED onion, and 3 or 4 garlic dill pickles.
Once the taters have cooled some, hold them with a hot-pad in your palm, and roughly chop them. You want them still MOSTLY hot, but cool enough you don't hurt yourself. It's that mid-point that will give you the texture/feel you want.
Now, pour and sprinkle 2 handfulls of the dill pickle juice over the taters. Add the red onion, pickles and a jar of diced pimientos, plus some of the juice as well. Put the eggs in and the use a knife to rough-chop them as they sit atop the rest of the ingredients.

Now, add 1 1/4-1 1/2 cup HELLMAN'S or BEST FOODS MAYO. Period.
Now stir. Keep stirring, as you are folding all the ingredients together.

Now, Cover tightly and fridge for the rest of the day, until dinnertime.
Now make The Meatballs (which are tasty dipped in The Sauce!):
Do as you did for The Sauce, the clarified onion/garlic mix. Set aside to cool
In a big bowl, pour the following:
2 cups Progresso Italian Breadcrumbs
1 cup grated parmesan
1/2 cup finely chopped parsley
Stir to mix.
Take a 2-cup Pyrex measure, and pour in 1 cup cold water.
Crack in 4 eggs...use a fork and break the eggs up, and distribute through the water. Pour into the bowl and stir into the dry ingredients. Add the onions and garlic (now cooled down.)
Crumble in a pound of ground beef and a pound of hot Italian Sausage. Now comes the fun part. Be four again and squish and squish until it all comes together as a solidly distributed mix.
Form into balls and bake at 350 for about a half hour and you get this:

lulz. OK. SO: Meatballs? Check! Sauce? Check! Tater Sallid? Check! It's about ten til four. I'm gonna shoot for a seven-seven-thirty eat time, so I'll start roasting the chicken about 5pm.
Which means I got an hour to CHILL in THE AC.

How to make meth
Making Methamphetamine at home:
List of chemicals and materials: Diluted HCl - also called Muriatic acid - can be obtained from hardware stores, in the pool section
NaOH - also called lye
Ethyl Ether - aka Diethyl Ether - Et-0-Et - can be obtained from engine starting fluid, usually from a large supermarket. Look for one that says "high ethyl ether content", such as Prestone
Ephedrine The cottons in todays vicks nasle inhalers dont contain efed or pfed (ephedrin or psuedoephedrin) but there are still lots of easy ways to get good ephed or pfed, pure ephedrin can be extracted out of it's plant matter, from a plant that can be bought at most garden stores. Or you can get pfed from decongestive pills like sudafed. Most people perfer to work with pfed from pills rather then ephed from the plant. The important thing is that you must have pure pfed/ephed as any contaminants will fuck up the molar ratio leaving you with over-reduced shit or under-reduced shit. Or contaminats will jell durring baseifying and gak up your product which will then be very hard to clean. So you want to find a pill that is nearly pure pfed hcl, or as close to pure as you can get. Also check the lable on your pills and see what inactive ingredients they contain. Inactive ingredients are things like binders and flavors. These you dont want and will remove when cleaning your pills. but certain inactive ingredients are harder to remove then others. You dont want pills with a red coating, you dont want pills with alot of cellose in them and you dont want pills with much wax. you also dont want pills that contain povidone. As a rule, if you have a two pills that contain the same amount of pfed hcl then take the smaller sized pill because it obviously has less binders and inactive ingredients, time released pills are usualy harder to work with because they have more binders and tend to gel up durring the a/b stage. Also only buy pills that have pfed hcl as the only active ingredient. You first have to make ephedrine (which is sometimes sold as meth by itself):If you are selling it...I would just make ephedrine and say it's meth.
Distilled water - it's really cheap, so you have no reason to use the nasty stuff from the tap. Do things right.
List of equipment : A glass eyedropper
Three small glass bottles with lids (approx. 3 oz., but not important)one should be marked at 1.5oz, use tape on the outside to mark it (you might want to label it as ether). One should be clear (and it can't be the marked one).
A Pyrex dish (the meatloaf one is suggested)
A glass quart jar
Sharp scissors
Clean rubber gloves
Coffee filters
A measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Preparing your Lab:
Preparing Ethyl Ether: WARNING: Ethyl Ether is very flammable and is heavier than air. Do not use ethyl ether near flame or non-sparkless motors. It is also an anaesthetic and can cause respiratory collapse if you inhale too much.
Take the unmarked small bottle and spray starter fluid in it until it looks half-full. Then fill the rest of the way with water, cap the bottle and shake for 5 minutes. Let it sit for a minute or two, and tap the side to try and separate the clear upper layer. Then, draw off the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, and throw away the lower (water) and cloudy layer. Place the ether in the marked container. Repeat this until you have about 1.5 oz. of ether. Put the cap on it, and put it in the freezer if you can. Rinse the other bottle and let it stand.
Ethyl ether is very pungent. Even a small evaporated amount is quite noticeable.

5. Pour 1/8 teaspoon of the lye crystals into the bottle of ephedrine and agitate. Do this carefully, as the mixture will become hot, and give off hydrogen gas and/or steam. H2 gas is explosive and lighter than air, avoid any flames as usual. Repeat this step until the mixture remains cloudy. This step neutralizes the HCl in the salt, leaving the insoluble free base (l-desoxyephedrine) again. Why do we do this? So that we can get rid of any water-soluble impurities. For 3 oz. bottles, this should take only 3 repetitions or so.
6. Fill the bottle from step 5 up the rest of the way with ethyl ether. Cap the bottle, and agitate for about 8 minutes. It is very important to expose every molecule of the free-base to the ether for as long as possible. This will cause the free base to dissolve into the ether (it -is- soluble in ether).
7. Let the mixture settle. There will be a middle layer that is very thick. Tap the side of the bottle to get this layer as thin as possible. This is why this bottle should be clear.
8. Remove the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, being careful not to get any of the middle layer in it. Place the removed ether layer into a third bottle.
9. Add to the third bottle enough water to fill it half-way and about 5 drops of muriatic acid. Cap it. Shake the bottle for 2 minutes. When it settles, remove the top layer and throw it away. The free base has now been bonded to the HCl again, forming a water soluble salt. This time, we're getting rid of ether-soluble impurities. Make sure to get rid of all the ether before going to step 11!
10. If there is anything left from step 3, repeat the procedure with it.
11. Evaporate the solution in the Pyrex dish on low heat. You can do this on the stove or nuke it in the microwave (be careful of splashing), but I have found that if you leave it on top of a hot-water heater (like the one that supplies hot water to your house) for about 2-3 days, the remaining crystals will be ephedrine HCl.
If you microwave it, I suggest no more than 5-10s at one time. If it starts "popping", that means you have too little liquid left to microwave. You can put it under a bright (100W) lamp instead. Microwaving can result in uneven heating, anyway.
First Batch: 120mg ephedrine HClEstimated: 300mg (100% of theoretical, disregarding HCl)
Now, Making Methamphetamine out of ephedrine by reducing it with Hydroiodic Acid and Red Phosphorus.
Items needed: Alot of matchbooks (the kind with the striking pad)
Coffee filters (or filter paper)
Something that measures ml and grams
A flask (a small pot with a lid can be used)
iodine
Hydroiodic Acid (I will tell you how to make this)
Red Phosphorus (I will tell you how to make this)
Lye
*Optional (toluene and HCI gas)
Making Red Phosphorus: The striking pad on books of matches is about 50% red phosphorus. The determined experimenter could obtain a pile of red phosphorus by scraping off the striking pads of matchbooks with a sharp knife. A typical composition of the striking pad is about 50% red phosphorus, along with about 30% antimony sulfide, and lesser amounts of glue, iron oxide, MnO2, and glass powder. I don't think these contaminants will seriously interfere with the reaction. Naturally, it is a tedious process to get large amounts of red phosphorus by scraping the striking pads off matchbooks, but who cares?

hi blog it's friday!! we made it!
I was about to say that it’s a relatively chill day at work so far but lol I have apparently already forgotten that my 10am meeting slot had five separate meeting invites in it. deciding which meeting to attend every half hour is a full time job in itself!
my post-renovation task this weekend is to find a cute 3-cup pitcher i can display next to my coffee maker. I stopped pouring the water into the coffee maker from the carafe and have been using my big 4 cup Pyrex measure cup instead (because it keeps the water repository in the machine cleaner. no matter how well I wash the carafe every day, the coffee oils build up.) but I'm usually too lazy to dry the pyrex so I keep it out on the counter all day. if I'm going to keep something like that on the counter, I want it to be prettier than the glass pyrex measuring cup. lol 15 year old me who absolutely hated shopping with my mom for home decor would be so mortified how i turned out. but I guess something about having your own house makes decorating so much more fun. I suppose it's finally getting to live in a place decorated to my tastes, as opposed to my parents' tastes.
I can't believe I just wrote a massive paragraph about measuring cup decor. whatever, I regret nothing.
on the writing front, I started editing best vc club fic again! it's getting closer and closer to being done and I'm very excited. I'll probably reach the stage soon where it just needs to be finished, else I will pick at it for all eternity.
secret big bang fic is also coming along! it finally found a plot (yay!) and alsjfjglla I've seen some of my artists work and it's so cool I love it so much I'm so excited.

Celebrating July 4th in Strange Times, Pt 1
I'm still recovering from the literal assault of a week we all just went through. And it's only Wednesday. Time to UNHOOK AND COOK.
I'm not thinkin' too clearly, but like i've often said here on this hellsite (meh): when in doubt, BAKE. And COOK.
I had no idea just why, but my old friend/landlord back in Austin came to mind yesterday, and as a result, this felafel recipe. His grandmother was Lebanese. His grandfather was Italian. And then my old friend who is second-generation Armenian immigrant came to mind, as well.
This felafel recipe is "authentic", and pretty basic to people who know, but to this heavily-breaded and chicken-fried Texas boy, it was a revelation.
Final confirmation the boy knows his felafel came from Chef roomie yesterday that they were, indeed, beatiful and tasty, with the homemade tzatziki as dunkin' sauce.

So this occupied me yesterday, still over a dozen felafel balls left, and lots of tzatziki, and it hit me to celebrate in my own way by making an "All American" dinner that is a blend of food friends have all enjoyed in dinners past.
We'll have those heated, along with more dipping sauce, beside a batch of my oven-baked Italian meatballs, and oven-barbecued chicken thighs, with homemade barbecue sauce (goes great on the meatballs as well!), and my version of potato salad.
As far as dessert, I started today by making a batch of super-vanilla no-churn ice cream in the hottest part of the afternoon. Thought that might cause problems, but it's already setting, so that's good. I am also gonna make a coffee-chocolate sauce to go on top, along with a dollop of the red raspberry freezer jam I made last week.
OK: First things first,
Felafel Recipe
2 cups (dry measure) dried garbanzo beans
4 cups cold water
1 bunch parsley
5-6+ cloves garlic
1 large onion
2 tablespoons of cumin
1 heaping tablespoon of baking powder
3 tablespoons of flour
1 teaspoon salt
Pepper to taste
Put dried garbanzos and water in a medium-small bowl or 4-cup liquid measure pyrex cup. Cover and put in fridge at least over night. They will expand! Leave them for 24-36 hours, until they have at least doubled in volume.
After they have soaked, drain and put in food processor bowl, with regular blade. Put the rest of the ingredients in on top of the garbanzos. Chop the parsley in half first, spread the dried ingredients evenly.
Put the cover on and process, pulse at first, until you see the desired color and texture start to happen. Stop and scrape, then turn on and leave on until you get a grainy texture and STOP.
Transfer to another bowl, cover and refrigerate until you're ready to fry.
Tzatziki Recipe:
1 cup sour cream (or Greek Yogurt)
1 cucumber
Salt/Pepper
Use the large grates on a cheese grater, grate the cucumber into a small bowl. Sprinkle liberally with about a teaspoon of salt. Mash it around, until you see the green liquid start for form. Take and strain, mashing the rest of the water and salt out. Mix with the sour cream and chill.
Fry the felafel into small (1 to 1 1/2") balls, using a teaspoon to help you form the balls. Drop them one at a time into the "chicken-frying hot" fat of your choice. Fry until a dark-golden brown. Serve with the Tzatziki as a dip. The felafel balls freeze and re-heat well.
I'll post the rest of it as it happens tomorrow. I think i've posted the ice-cream recipe before, this time basic vanilla, thus the coffee-chocolate sauce and raspberry jam.
