Tuesday, January 23: Pyogenesis, "Survival of the Fittest"

While at one point Pyogenesis was more of an alternative rock band, the German act had heavied up enough by A Silent Soul Screams Loud to credibly call themselves at least somewhat metal.  “Survival of the Fittest” was a fast and heavy number befitting its title, though the fuzzy guitar sound bordered on grunge.  Flo Schwarz’s vocals were a touch hard rock, but balanced out the chugging and blastbeats well.  “Survival of the Fittest” was pretty catchy considering the disparate textures wafting in and out of the track, though the gang chorus didn’t make a ton of sense.  Still, a fun tune.

Thursday, August 27: Pyogenesis, “These Roads”

Pyogenesis released Sweet X-Rated Nothings right as Paradise Lost broke wide with Draconian Times, and in a way tracks like “These Roads” were like more accessible adjuncts to that record- the vocals were cleaner, the hooks were more upfront and the production was smoother.  But the guitars remained rooted in doomdeath, and for the moment Pyogenesis was still committed to metal, even if the sweetness in their writing and playing began assuming a bigger role. Most of all, “These Roads” played like a mid ‘90s alternative metal track, with all the good and bad that implied, and the band apparently took that to heart since most of their future material expanded on the alternative elements.
