*The door to where Pit is kept opens. Instead of Daddy Longlegs again like he expects, a greasy ass teenager walks in. Slicked back hair and terrible acne, he’s followed by Anna (pit doesn’t know who this is but shush) who’s carrying what looks like a blowtorch and metal pole*
Well well well! If it isn’t my favorite penguin!
Why penguin? You could’ve said like chicken or something and it’d have been more accurate.
Shut the fuck up, Anna.
I’m just saying Judas, if you’re gonna call him a flightless bird, at least make it his type of color scheme.
Just… just shut up. We have things to do that isn’t argue about birds.
*she sticks her tongue out at him*
Alright, Pit. I’m gonna level with ya, I’m going to enjoy this.
That’s a bit fucked up.
Just hand me the brander.
Branding iron.
Anna, I swear…
*She hands him the branding iron and blowtorch he brought in*
Let’s see if this works on something like him!
*he starts heating the iron, forcing Pit to watch*
*looking at it, the iron says “useless” on it*
Seriously?! Judas, this is exceptionally cruel…
Yeah, but it’s fun. Plus it’ll get his friends to come faster if they know he’s harmed. Dark Pit will tell them. They’ll come in without a proper plan and voila! We capture a bunch of the best fighters in one fell swoop!
Okay. Counterpoint, I don’t like this.
Counterpoint, you let your partner die.
*Anna gives Judas a death stare*
I’m gonna go wait outside so I don’t bring your ass with my foot right now.
Have fun! I know I will.
*Anna leaves the room and Judas looks Pit in the eyes*
What do you wanna talk about while we wait? Cause I doubt you’ll be doing much talking when I’m done with you.
Y-you're not really gonna use that, are you?
[PIT looks scared. He starts frantically trying to escape]
#of COURSE the most evil character is named Judas!#may as well have named him Satan!#he's way worse than Puyo Puyo's Satan#but these are greek mytholgy characters so they won't get the name reference#but to the audience that name alone is a HUGE red flag#mafia arc#my baby NOOOOOOOOO#cw torture#tw torture#non omori characters#omori food administration

The Dark Picture ~ Origins of the Ink Demon : Operation Drawcia Pt.16
"At Gal Da val Islands..."
"PSO STAGE : Gal Da Val"
[Jungle ~ A Lush Load - Fumie Kumatani]
Nights : (sighs) Sometimes. This is pretty a bogus day for being a Sonic Team title of my own, I mean, Yuji Naka has always been a top notch since he and Naoto Ohshima had went up their separate ways. It's been toughs since Sonic Team has been like this together with PSO, it's becoming a huge phenomenon in the Real World since Samba De Amigo was released. I gotta hand it to admit, the Nakaster had a pretty life style when it comes to Phantasy Star, plus, Sonic Team is getting good With Puyo Puyo since their owner Compile was shutdown as Sega gave the rights to it. It is was it is.
Tillis : There you are! I've been looking for you all day.
Nights : Tillis. What are you doing here?
Tillis : Well, I had to make sure that the Black Arms staying busy dealing with the invasion since your last gig at the Casino in 1998, but I had to comeback just to make sure that this wasn't the first time you ever came to PSO on this day. I heard that you are exicted that SEGA Carnival/Illusion will be appearing as a race track for Yuji Naka's last game, but I heard that the officials are going close down the game servers.
Nights : Yeah, that seems fair alright. Nothing that Sega matters. Hope everyone is all right since the new guy is coming.
Tillis : Who's the new guy?
Nights : Didn't you heard? He just got out of the joint 10 years ago, they say that he's the guy that had taken the blame for shooting a chairman of Japan's largest syndicate, the Yakuza.
Tillis : Yakuza? Wait a sec. Wasn't that F-Zero GX was working a new game after they made F-Zero GX/AX?
Nights : That's what I told them. The producer who made those games like Fighting Vipers and Super Monkey Ball is making a new series that is about a crime syndicate, Yakuza.
Tillis : Oh no! Nights what did I tell you this before? The Yakuzas are bad, they are a crime syndicate that are the Mafia of Japan, they're gangsters. What does Sega have to do with a crime syndicate?
Nights : Things Changed for Sega, Sega is officially making changes after the Dreamcast Era ended right about now. This is a picture of man who took out the captain of the Tojo Clan.
[Roar of the Dragon - Hidenori Shoji]
Tillis : Who is this man? Who looks very odd.
Nights : his name is Kiryu Kazuma, he is Yakuza member of the Dojima Family, the family that he was expelled from, but it simple that he's other wise known as the Dragon of the Dojima Family.
Tillis : The Dragon of the Dojima Family. (gasps) Hey, I heard something about that creature, Soryu.
Nights : Soryu? Who's that?
Tillis : Soryu was the name of that Dragon who protected Real World Earth from the threat of Demon Vibe that stopped Demon Vibe for around 3000 years ago. Demon Vibe was banished into that dimension which of became a shell of a universe, we like it to call the shell of another dimension. The world of Soul Eater had been a hoax the entire time, facade created by Demon Vibe in order to manipulate the humans and witches fighting against each other.
[Theme of Babylonian - Fumie Kumatani]
Nights : That's an interesting name for cosmic dragon that protects the planet Earth. Soryu was the one who gave Shinra hope of saving his world before the Time Eater came and erased half of the universe that once lived in. Shinra Kusakabe's story was retconned when he created his man-made son and the world of Soul Eater itself.
Tillis : You have my word nights.
Nights : But who let him and his people die by the hands of the Time Eater including Soul Eater's universe being destroyed in half?
Tillis : The true mastermind behind the meisters and witches conflict was caused by Darkside Death, a heartless who plans on conquering all this entire planet killing all-living things that have hearts like us. Your so-called courage is caused by your heart like Elliot and Claris's, the courage you given them was heart.
Nights : No wonder why we protags or heroes like us had the potential of being a cocky hero. That's some pretty rad stuff about it. But let me tell you this one I defeat a god with...not courage, but valor. Valor is the same as Courage and Bravery. Thank you understanding me that, looks like you just set a new record for uncovering the secrets of Soul Eater's story.
Tillis : You got that right. All heroes can't defeat a god with courage that is love, but they can defeat a god with Valor!
*WHOOSH+SPLAT!*
Tillis : Hey! My face! Get it off me! Get it off me! Who threw that!?
Nights : Tillis! (washes Tillis's face with rinse water) Tillis! Are you okay!?
Tillis : I'm fine! But this jerk over here just splashed me in my face with Ink! I hope someone's gonna pay for that!
Nights : Hey, watch where you throwing that stuff, ya coward!
Tillis : Hey, isn't that...?
Patty Thompson : You finally knew that I am here. Yes, I did it all, I was the Ink Demon that attacked the American public, I was the one who framed Maka Albarn. And the one who cause the attacks in Tokyo, it was me.
Tillis : Now I know who you are, you're the real Patricia Thompson! The real one who became the Ink Demon!
Nights : So you're the one behind all of this! Why on earth did you do it?
Patty Thompson : (chuckles) You wanna know something why? You're about to see something dramatically, you wanna know really something about me, do ya? Well then...I suggest that you no such things as a lions, tigers, and oh my...No bears at all. But there is one animal that is hiding her shell. And I'm about shed it for ya (turns into the Ink Demon) How do you like it to feel shedding your skin now...Huh, punks?
[Jungle ~ A Forest Cage - Fumie Kumatani]
Tillis : Wait a sec!
(flashing images of Patty (as the Ink Demon) battling Inky Albarn while attacking the city)
Tillis : I finally figured it out! You're the one who attacked Tokyo!
Maka Albarn : Sorry we're in bit of a pickle! Master Phanto had requested some deceiver who framed me and I really need to clear my name!
Tillis : You think so, well guess what. It turns out the who framed you is this one. It's one the main heroes of Soul World!
Patty Thompson : Oh, look. If it ain't the victim of an innocent little girl, I should've known that you would comeback to me.
Maka Albarn : Wait. Patty Thompson, it was you who framed me? How can you do things like this! Why frame me!? Why do you save all that trouble just to make me look like the bad girl!? I thought we were friends!
Patty Thompson : We were never friends to each other, Maka Albarn! Ever since Sammy Lawrence captured me to become one of his test subjects, I became the first human girl to become a weapon for the Ink Demon, a biological weapon that will make me the Ultimate Thompson in the country! Making a mess on the American Public, causing the attacks in Tokyo, it was all part of Inky Albarn's plan of eradicating the evil that someone has caused!
Maka Albarn : A plan, you mean Inky Albarn was responsible for all of that?
Patty Thompson : Exactly! The reason that Soul Eater existed because Shinra Kusakabe has been spreading lies to us and the Real World!! We all knew that the story of Soul Eater is false! There was no Shinigami, there was no Kishin, and there is no such thing is Madness.
Tillis : Shinigami, Kishin, Madness? Wait a sec, was this all just a wordplay from Atsushi Ohkubo so that mangakas like him can raise all the stakes to himself?
Patty Thompson : Isn't about the money, it's about retribution. I will reclaim you as your only helper of a hero, or that so-called power of friendship crap just wanna make me puke. Why would Ohkubo make us the heroes of Soul World and it's story, it's because Shinra's spreading influence made us stubborn and kept on continuing to let truth out of it. And yes, Madness i just a wordplay for the story.
Tillis : And yet I believe Zim said that. He said the word "Madness" a million times over. That was only a concept in Ancient Greece. That thing doesn't work anymore, Truth ceased "Madness" to function with a simple mind of Calm and a cup of Tea.
Patty Thompson : Cup of Tea, you say? Calmness and Tea does help make your sanity at a normal level, but why do you think Madness was used as a wordplay for Soul Eater's story?
Tillis : Oh, I don't know, some word that you should never play with.
Nights : Well...This excursion is getting me a major bum out, I should never play with a bunch of words, and I will not give it up without a fight put up.
(the two starts battling against Patty Thompson)
[Nebula Montana Pt. 2 - Fumie Kumatani, Kenichi Tokoi]
Maka Albarn : So, Patty! Is that the reason you got me framed for what you did something you do?
Patty Thompson : Inky Albarn wanted to bring the Ink Demon Bloodline royalty back after it was being used heartless. The Medusa Gorgon you knew is actually a banished half of the original and she wanted to put an end to Shinra's legacy!
Maka Albarn : Medusa Gorgon was literally a banished half of the original? Our author got us involved of killing a heartless just for the sake of protecting Shinra's Legacy! We went through all that trouble in the beginning just for a stupid legacy!? I looked up into Shinra, I looked up into his man-made son, how could author not made a prequel about Shinra Kusakabe's life, how can he hid the truth from us!? No wonder why we existed!
Patty Thompson : That's on you, humans might be good on the outside, but are sometimes evil on the inside. So after I became this, Liz would get in trouble of ruining the Mario Bros homeland, so I decided to make her go to a safe place.
Maka Albarn : A safe place? What safe place? You mean you made her move to Virginia, didn't you? That's why she couldn't come back to Brooklyn.
Patty Thompson : True, I had to make her escape. I didn't wanted to get her hurt! I just wanted those that wanted to get hurt!
Maka Albarn : Is that is why you framed for those that I never wanted to get hurt. But the Kishi--
Patty Thompson : Cut the Kishin crap, Maka! There is no Kishin, there's no god in the Ohkuboverse at all, this was all simply a lie from the start, Demon Vibe wanted to rule the Galaxy and the Ohkuboverse was nothing more than a shell of the dimension he was imprisoned at.
Maka Albarn : The Ohkuboverse was just a shell of a dimension, not a real universe?
Patty Thompson : Exactly, therefore. I must put everything to an end quickly?
*THUNDER BOOMING*
Maka Albarn : What's that thundering and lightning?
Patty Thompson : Looks like the fight's interrupted! I guess we'll call this a forfeit, so I guess that you decided that you won this time.
*Cellphone Ringing*
Maka Albarn : Cellphone?
Patty Thompson : I believe that's for you. Pick it up.
Maka Albarn : (answers phone) Hello?
Moirai Albarn : (via phone) Sister! It's me, Moirai Albarn!
Maka Albarn : Sister! Where have you been? What is even happening!?
Moirai Albarn : (via phone) I'm in hot water! The robots in the city are running amok and the Egg Pawns have gone haywire! I believe there is some data corrupted by a FOmar from PSO, it looks like that someone is trying to pull the data through! This is the work of Dark Falz! I am at the Central tower! Meet me there!
Maka Albarn : Right!
*Gal Gryphon Roaring*
Marie Mjolnir : Looks like we'll have to split up, You go find your sister and I'll go deal with this creature that lurks in the stormy skies!
Maka Albarn : Alright! Good luck, you guys! (Runs off)
Nights : You heard her. Let's make sure that we'll get to the bottom of this! Let's investigate this island furhter. It's gonna be one heck of a party to take villainy down! (The group runs off along with Patty)
Patty Thompson : Hey! No fair! I can redeem myself too, you know! Why does people always have the fun without me?

I didn’t post about everything I played this year, so here’s my opinions on the stuff I played that I didn’t make a rec post for:
Raging Loop
Raging Loop is one of them twisty meta Zero Escape-y branching-path visual novels where an ensemble cast is trapped in a mysterious circumstance where people are dying gruesomely, and you have to find out what’s happening and stop it by looping a bunch.
I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it, because... it tries to have its cake and eat it too with the supernatural elements. Clearly magic is real and has important impacts on the scenario, but then other parts are trickery you’re supposed to see through, and it’s entirely uninterested in cluing you in to how that trickery was accomplished. Not exactly a fair play mystery, in that regard- you have to kind of just be along for the ride, rather than try to figure it out.
That said, it’s a good ride- pretty strong character writing, and the central conceit of the Werewolf/Mafia-style murder scenario creates really interesting drama. It’s more concerned with making itself feel clever than letting the player feel clever, but it’s still well-paced and gripping and has a pretty decent resolution.
Detective Grimoire
I recommended Tangle Tower, the sequel, pretty strongly- and this one, while obviously a little rougher around the edges with the art and mechanics (the suspicion tracker system is a total dud; I didn’t even realize it existed until I realized I was missing an achievement for using it), it’s still pretty darn good. Really fun character designs and animations, fully-voiced, and a solid whodunit backing it all. Plus- while the two are more or less self-contained, the continuity threads with Tangle Tower raised some really interesting questions.
Contradiction - the all-video murder mystery
This one was pretty fun, largely on the strength of the actors. The main mechanic of interrogating people on evidence and using their own statements against each other was some good stuff, too. Definitely had that Phoenix Wright quality to the deductions, and Jenks is a really fun character. (Had a few points where progression was just linked to standing in a certain previously-abandoned area of the map where a clue was suddenly there for no reason, there- good thing it had a hint system.)
As a mystery, it could use a little work- most of what you end up finding out is sequel bait (for a sequel that never actually came together, unfortunately), and the actual whodunit is just sort of hiding in the cracks of all that. And... cornering the culprit just sort of happens out of nowhere once you’ve got your hands on the right piece of evidence, without much fanfare. You’re following up on leads like usual, you find a little lie in someone’s testimony, and then- oh, shit, they’re just confessing everything! Unlike all the previous times you questioned them and they were super evasive like everyone else! And then the game is over.
All in all, it’s pretty meaty and entertaining and I’d recommend it, but unfortunately the creators have moved on to other things, so there’s not going to be any follow-up on the stuff it left unresolved.
Ikenfell
Ikenfell is a tightly-designed RPG about kids at a magic school, with Paper Mario-style action command mechanics and a battle system that makes a big deal out of careful positioning and movement, which was really enjoyable. The difficulty’s a little high (I recommend always always always speccing into max damage because killing things before they kill you is worth more than any amount of defense, speed doesn’t work, and healing is cheap), but I found it really satisfying.
There’s... something... off? About... I don’t know how to put it, it’s... doing that “yes, everyone is queer and mentally ill, deal with it” thing, which, sure, okay. But for a lot of them it’s such a background thing, like... half the playable cast is unambiguously nonbinary, but like... I don’t know if it’s trying to make some statement on how there are no rules to being NB and you can 100% perform a particular binary gender presentation but still count, or if they wrote the whole story and then changed the pronouns of some of the characters for Representation Points, or what. Probably the former? I dunno, it just feels weird. Maybe I’m just not woke enough to Get It.
(unrelatedly: why the heck is the official art they use everywhere so... off-model? none of them look like they do in-game- they look like the creator commissioned someone to draw a group shot with one reference image each and didn’t tell them anything about the characters. how much you wanna bet they commissioned a friend and it came out wrong but they were too polite to say “sorry, no, this is wrong, can you do it over?”)
Trails of Cold Steel IV
Hoo boy. It’s... not great, and it’s not great in a pretty predictable way for an even-numbered entry in the Trails series. It happens every time- first there’s a game in a new engine with new characters and a new world to explore, and it’s really nice and does interesting things... and then it ends on a cliffhanger, and then there’s a sequel game in the same engine with the same characters and the same world, reusing as many assets as possible. Also the League Of Generically Evil Anime Supervillains is there causing trouble for reasons they refuse to explain, and the plot is a storm of magicbabble and macguffin-chasing that makes little to no sense.
Cold Steel IV is that for Cold Steel III, full stop. Welcome back to all the same places you visited last game, except this time there’s some stupid magic apocalypse happening (not that it stops you from taking the time to do random sidequests constantly, of course). The whole “oh, the evil curse mind controls people and that’s why they do stupid bullshit that’s in no one’s interest” plot point is leaned on super hard, and it’s just a big yawn the whole way through.
It’s still really fun, though, because the battle system remains really well-designed. (The same battle system that was just as fun in Cold Steel III, mind you, but it hasn’t gotten old.) And- though they’re struggling to square it with the dumb mind control apocalypse plot, the NPC dialogue continues to make the world feel believable and lived-in. They don’t slack on the parts that make Trails good- it’s just the parts that make Trails bad are making themselves more evident than ever.
did finally get to date Towa though so that’s a win
One Step From Eden
OSFE is... uh. It’s fucking hard is what it is. It’s sort of a deckbuilding roguelike, and there’s this combat that takes place on a grid, and- wait, it’s like Mega Man Battle Network, it’s exactly like Mega Man Battle Network. Man, I forgot about that, but the mechanical influence is extremely obvious. It’s MMBN meets Slay the Spire.
Except it’s super duper hard as hell, because unlike MMBN you can’t pause and swap out chips or anything- everything is just always happening so much, all at once, everywhere, and you have no recourse but to git gud and learn all the enemy patterns and the behavior of your own spells and develop the twitch reflexes necessary to not fucking die from all the shit that’s on the screen always.
(What’s the story? Uhhhh, there was some kind of magic apocalypse, and some anime girls are trying to reach a city for some reason that doesn’t really get explained ever. The game doesn’t really care to build its world at all- it’s all mechanics plus a little token character dialogue that doesn’t say much.)
The point is it’s really frickin’ hard but I am an epic pro gamer and I got ALL THE ACHIEVEMENTS, MOTHERFUCKER. If you’ve played it, I expect you to be really god damn impressed with me, okay???
A Short Hike
This one was really relaxing! It’s a platformer where you explore an Animal Crossing-y island of cartoon animal people, collecting mobility upgrades- but like, mainly it’s about straight chillin’. The flight controls are fun and there’s lots of little secrets to find and it’s just a nice time that doesn’t drag on too long. Not too much to say about this one.
Pokémon Sword
Ehhhhh.
I’m not here for the hot takes about how Dexit is good actually. Development hell happened, they had to make cuts for time, I get it. It’s disappointing and makes the game a little bit worse, but it’s not the end of the world.
Apart from that... perfectly serviceable? The Wild Area could’ve used a little more technical polish (as could most things in the game, really) but was a step in the right direction, giving the player a wider array of early-game team-building options than ever before. No HMs is good. Story and characters were kind of nothing, but that’s par for the course. “At least this time they’re not shoehorning in some kind of stupid evil-team-wants-legendary-pokemon-to-destroy-the-world apocalypse plot”, I thought to myself before they managed to shoehorn one in at the last minute with zero buildup- but, hey, beats wasting half the game on it.
It’s nothing special and it’s missing a lot of polish, but its problems are mainly due to being rushed, and presumably next gen they’ll be able to reuse a lot of the models and animations (maybe even improve the animations so they’re not so boring??? a man can dream) and make something interesting. SwSh seem like they were testing the waters for something else, and not taking too many chances in the meantime.
(yo why would you sell all these cosmetic items and then turn them all off during gym battles, though)
Hades
Hades is- oh, who am I kidding? Everyone knows Hades, it’s the game of the year, greatest thing since sliced bread, Supergiant are heroes, yada yada yada. I’ve played almost 300 hours of it and I’ve completed everything except all the Resources Director levels (currently a Sigma Wraith), it’s extremely fun and you don’t need me to tell you that.
Petal Crash
It was that thing the Paranatural creator helped on? It’s, uh. It’s a block-sliding puzzle game thing, sort of in a Puyo Puyo vein. It has fun character designs and some good dialogue, like you’d expect from Zack’s involvement, but it didn’t really leave an impression otherwise (besides how got dang infuriating some of its Turn Trial puzzles can be.) The story is... kinda heartwarming, kinda didactic, kinda childish, not especially deep or interesting. Hard for it to be, when it’s told through little bits of fluffy character dialogue that exist to set up a puzzle battle as quickly as possible. Not super recommended unless you really really like block-sliding puzzles.
Hollow Knight
Man, why’d I sleep on this for so long? It’s a metroidvania platformer with heavy Dark Souls inspiration, in terms of tone and difficulty and death mechanics and environmental storytelling. And it’s... apart from all that, just really good as a game, with tight controls and juicy movement and great animation. Progression is linked as much to mastery as it is to upgrades collected- I found myself in lategame areas facing down things that would’ve killed me ten times over at the start- not because I had the best gear, but because I’d learned the game’s language and understood how to move in ways that wouldn’t get me killed.
(Usually. Sometimes I’d walk into a room and sit on a bench and suddenly there’d be a boss fight and I’d get slaughtered. Ain’t that just the way it goes?)
Anyway, on top of all that it’s just charming as hell, with a really unique and well-realized world full of little bug people. I love how, like, your character is clearly some kind of eldritch abomination, but it’s small and cute and so everyone (besides enemies that attack you on sight because they’re possessed by some kinda evil mold) is like “awww, who’s this little guy? want some help, little guy?”
(except Zote, who is just an ass hole. i love him.)

rennebright: Hoo boy, thought it was another quest but yeah, CSPD gets into some extreme sitcom situations
A normal afternoon for the SSS is:
Waking up and watching KeA Cosmic Brain a new breakfast meal a kid her age has no business learning much less mastering let alone CONCEIVING.
Receiving four requests in their Puyo Puyo computer.
One of the is from Phantom Thief B and he stole the Crossbell Bank Building. He didn’t rob the place, mind you, he stole the building itself. The whole thing.
The next one is from Gracie and she wants you to interview Cryptids for the new block of her magazine: “What Are The Favorite Underwear Colors Of Impossible Creatures?”.
Wazy makes a dry joke at this point.
Third request is something really innocent and simple sounding. You need to recover a book for your librarian uncle. It ends in a high speed motorcycle chase and the arrest of a dragon. You send the dragon to jail. It tries to escape and it is put to the dragon electric chair.
Randy says something funny at this point, to which Tio responds with “You Mother Fucker” but in a very subdued manner and with a polite choice of words.
Last request is dangerous sounding, involve the Heiyue and the mafia. It’s actually just talking to three NPCs and nothing worthy of note happens except some nice world building.
By coincidence, you talked to the maid on the Entertainment District’s hotel on the second floor between the two luxury suites, facing her from the south, unlocking Vol. 57 of “Gambler Jack III -- Ultra Poker Legend”. Collecting all 139 volumes and trading them in with a rabbit during the last chapter nets you one (1) Super Dollar which you can use to make one (1) Super Endgame Weapon.
You happened to talk to the chief of Mainz, which unlocks a secret quest that involves poisoning the water supply of Garrelia Fortress. This indirectly causes Elliot to die in the future, unlocking the true end of Cold Steel IV.
Lloyd accidentally flirts with Ellie and almost drops a baby in her like she’s the gorilla exhibit.
Noel is just happy to ride the car I gave the ugliest decal I humanly could.
KeA eradicates Gordon Ramsay from existence during dinner time with her Pussy Poppin’ Pasta that she learned to make by just watching.
and I want nothing, absolutely NOTHING to change.

Synopsis:
Rinka Shishimai was a high schooler who ran a small café named Lion House in place of her grandmother. She lived her life much like any other person her age, but one day, she was caught up in an explosion while returning home on the train alongside her friend, Naomi Hitsuji. In an attempt to save her friend’s life, she shields her on instinct the moment the explosion goes off, losing her life in the process. However, before she knew it, she was back at Lion House, happily chatting with her friends as if nothing had happened in the first place.
“Good evening, my lovely little slaves to fate.”
A few days later, she found herself in a strange world. Here she met Parca, an odd girl claiming to be a goddess. It turns out that she had somehow become a participant in Divine Selection, a ritual carried out over twelve weeks by twelve people, which allowed them to compete in order to undo their deaths. Yet, what shocked Rinka most of all, was the presence of her friend Miharu Mishima amongst the twelve.
In order to get through Divine Selection, one must eliminate others by gathering information regarding their name, cause of death and regret in the real world, then “electing” them.
This turn of events would lead to her learning about the truth behind her death, as well as her own personal regrets. She would also come to face the reality that Miharu was willing to throw her life away for her sake, as well as the extents to which the other participants would go to for the sake of living through to the end.
Far more experiences than she ever could have imagined awaited her now, but where will her resolve lead her once all is said and done…?
Cast:
Rinka Shishimai Voiced by: Eriko Matsui
(Known roles: Higuma from Kemono Friends, Nao Kamiya from THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls, Suzuka from Akama ga Kill!, etc.)
She currently runs a small café named Lion House in place of her grandmother, who returned to the countryside temporarily to take care of a relative. The blonde streaks in her hair are natural, but have caused her peers to label her as a delinquent. To that effect, she rarely speaks to anyone there other than her friends Miharu, Mao and Naomi. This fact doesn’t particularly bother her however, especially as she’s not one for keeping up with trends and adjusting her attitude to those around her. Ironically she’s also seen as cool and aloof thanks to that, when in reality she cares for her friends deeply.
She has no particular hobbies to speak of, though she does enjoy shopping and reading shoujo manga. Black coffee is a favorite of hers, though she dislikes anything either too bitter or too sweet.
One day while returning home with Naomi, she dies while shielding Naomi from an explosion, becoming a participant in Divine Selection in the process. Her memory is somewhat fuzzy however, possibly due the shock of being caught up in the explosion, leading her to participate while not knowing both her cause of death and her regret.
Naomi Hitsuji Voiced by: Asuka Kakumoto
(Known roles: Elena Shimabara from THE iDOLM@STER: Million Live!, Panotty from Puyo Puyo!! Quest, Niko Oono from Engaged to the Unidentified, etc.)
Rinka’s underclassman at Amecha Girls’ University High School.
Shy and introverted most of the time, though she has no issues talking to those she gets along with. Came to know Rinka through certain circumstances, and eventually became friends with Mao and Miharu through her. A bookworm at heart, she also enjoys making sweets often. Dark places and scary stories are two of her biggest weaknesses. She has a solid relationship with her parents.
Her tendency to keep her feelings to herself lead to her classmates assigning her as head of the committee for the cafe they plan on opening during the culture festival, but her dedication to doing the best possible job leads to her learning how to brew coffee from Rinka.
The events of Rinka’s death haunt her dreams despite said events having been erased due to Divine Selection, possibly because she was present at the time. While not a participant, she does help Rinka gather information for Divine Selection.
Miharu Mishima Voiced by: Yuri Komagata
(Known roles: Sanguina from Fairy Fencer F, Sayoko Takayama from THE iDOLM@STER: Million Live!, Yuri from KiraKira ☆ PreCure a la Mode, etc.)
A student at Amecha Girls’ University High School, and one of Rinka’s classmates. While beautiful with the brains to match, others consider her difficult to approach, which results in her being avoided much like Rinka. As one would imagine, studying is her speciality, to the point where she can go for long hours without any breaks once she gets into it. Her eating habits would indicate that she isn’t fussy in the slightest, but in reality she simply doesn’t care much for taste in the first place. She works part-time at a certain restaurant, but apparently she’s yet to ask Rinka and Mao to come along at some point.
While typically level-headed, she sometimes speaks her mind without hesitation, leading to some harsh takes now and then. Her circumstances while growing up seem to be somewhat complciated, but not even Rinka knows much about it.
Her feelings for Rinka surpass the boundaries of simple friendship, but Rinka herself seems to be completely clueless about this.
Goddess Parca Voiced by: Kanako Nomura
(Known roles: Chizuru Nikaido from The iDOLM@STER Million Live, Lieura from Rage of Bahamut, Yuno Kashima from Little Battlers eXperience WARS, etc.)
An odd girl who claims to be a goddess.
She oversees Divine Selection, and only interacts with Rinka and the other participants within the strange dream world it takes place in. Unlike the participants, she can also move around freely in this space. She feels absolutely nothing over the events that take place during Divine Selection.
Her white dress and wool-like hair provide a fantastical air to her appearance, and while she may speak like a lady from the upper echelons of society, she has little issue saying some rather horrible things. Very little is known about her, including her preferences or even how she spends her time when not overseeing Divine Selection.
Mao Oguma Voiced by: Megumi Nanase
Rinka’s classmate and the mood maker of the group.
Seemingly has little interest in her classmates other than Rinka and Miharu, though unlike them she does have other friends. She loves shopping like no other, to the point that her first priority at amusement parks is to hit up the gift stores.
Rinka makes it a point not to tell her about Divine Selection, though she has noticed that something isn’t quite right.
Chan Chan Voiced by: Yuma Imaizumi
A young and cheerful lady.
Both her and her husband died in an accident while on their honeymoon, but Divine Selection made it so that both of them returned home safe and sound. To this effect, her elimination would result in her husband’s death as well, leading her to desperate measures.
??? Voiced by: Miho Saito
A mysterious child who crossed paths with Rinka and Naomi as they were making their way home. Gender unknown; Rinka thinks female, while Naomi thinks male.
While later revealed to be a participant in Divine Selection, further details are unknown.
Man Within the Dream Voiced by: Koto Nagatsuka
An androgynous man who appeared in Rinka’s dreams. He seems to live in the dream world, but it’s unknown if he has any ties to Parca. Rinka has no recollection of meeting him.
Sofiya Priessnitz Alexeievna Voiced by: Rinne
Otherwise known as Sonja.
A girl from Russia who boldly confronts Rinka in the real world despite being a participant in Divine Selection. What could she be planning…?
Shigetsugu Ushizuka Voiced by: Shouhei Murao
Seemingly the oldest participant in Divine Selection.
His attitude in the dream world makes him difficult to read, though this could be a façade in order to keep his emotions hidden.
Ferderico Carminati Voiced by: Hiroshi Koide
The Italian Stallion.
Seemingly a member of the mafia until he stirred up a certain incident, resulting in his death and participation in Divine Selection. Develops something of a friendly rivalry with Odette, another participant, and they agree to help each other until they’re the final two left.
Incredibly proud of his homeland, and convinced that no other country boasts food better than Italy. This leads to plenty of disputes with Odette. His main priorities when it comes to women are their appearance and chest size.
While rather happy go lucky most of the time, he’s known to display his mafioso side when the circumstances call for it.
Odette Melancon Voiced by: Minami Okamura
A French woman blessed with an incredible physique.
Apparently the representative for a shipping company affiliated with the underworld who were known for taking on illegal work. This led to her clashing with pirates and military forces often, much to her delight as a fighting nut. Formed a friendly rivalry with Federico not long after Divine Selection began, agreeing to help one another become the last two participants.
Has a very larger than life attitude, but boasts an impeccable perception and capacity for reasoning. To this effect, she rarely lets Federico handle important tasks, opting to work on her own.
Alan Scorpion Voiced by: Kunihiro Maeda
(Known roles: Larry from Ayakashi Gohan, Suzuki from Matsutarou Notari, etc.)
An Indian man of little words.
His personality makes his actions hard to predict, though it’s apparent that he has every intention of eliminating every other Divine Selection participant without mercy. What motivates him is unknown, but there’s certainly more to him than meets the eye.
Scale Jones Voiced by: Naoto Takeda
(Known roles: Hercules from Taiko no Tatsujin: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure, Koumei from Yakuza 6: Song of Life, Ryouta Kawamura from Yakuza Kiwami 2, etc.)
A man with an upbeat mentality.
He calmly observed the situation during the beginning of the Divine Selection and little he gets involved in gathering information on Divine Selection. He scrutinizes every action as good or evil and has stated that if the last one standing in Divine Selection is someone of justice, he’d gladly give up the right to be that person.
He’s been seen drinking at the bar with Federico and Odette but what exactly is his relationship with those two…?
Chanho Ro Voiced by: Yoshiyuki Koba
(Known roles: Gentle Nakamura from Yakuza 5, Ren from Shugo Kishi ~Palladium Knights~, etc.)
A well-built middle aged man from China. Apparently works for one of the country’s most influential companies.
Keiko Kamebushi Voiced by: Aoi Morinaka
A woman of many misfortunes, her weak constiution seemingly led to her being hospitalized for a long period of time.
While a participant in Divine Selection, Alan acquires her name card immediately after the ritual began.

Bonus review: Random gaming awards of 2017 part 2:
Now that we got rid of a few awards, there are still plenty to give about games from this year: Cheesiest pop/techno song:Hero from Super Bomberman R(followed by Aqua Road from Sonic Forces)
Ever wanted 90’s Japanese anime endings to make a comeback with a cheesy theme centered on love? Ever wanted to hear that same style of music in English? Well, Super Bomberman R has you covered for that. Aqua Road is also cheesy, but the lyrics are about battlefields and war while the song itself can be pretty cool on its own.

Best game I still haven’t completed the first level of:Flinthook(PC)
A friend of mine, who is a developer for Tribute Games, gave me a free copy of this game. I absolutely love everything about it: especially the mechanics and the overall gameplay. It’s just that I can’t reach the first boss after playing 5 hours of the game, so I couldn’t make a review of the product. I have no other runner-ups for this reward.
Best villain: SPOILERS FOR DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB AND PUYO PUYO TETRIS(!?)
Monika(followed by Ex from Puyo Puyo Tetris)
While I consider Ex to be a tragic villain on a philosophical level, tired of his position as creator of the worlds of Puyo Puyo and Tetris, which causes him to feel lonely, Monika is self-aware that she is in a Visual Novel to the point where she messes up each character’s personalities because she doesn’t have her own ending. She even kills a bunch of them. She also messes with you and your computer, which is why I think she’s this year’s best villain.
Most pathetic villain:SPOILERS FOR PERSONA 5 AND SONIC FORCES
Junya Kaneshiro from Persona 5(followed by Infinite from Sonic Forces)
Although Infinite has a pathetic backstory that essentially boils down to him getting humiliated by Shadow, I still find him a bit interesting as a character. Meanwhile, Kaneshiro barely has any character development and is just a one-dimentional mafia boss doing his job. He is generic beyond anything else I’ve seen this year. Way to go, Persona 5.
Best webseries that is essentially a let’s play of a nonexistent game on PS1: Petscop(followed by Concluse)
Concluse is a great webseries about a guy playing a PS1 game nobody has heard of, which can be considered weird with its Silent Hill-like themes. However, Petscop is an also amazing take on the same concept (despite the six-month wait for episode 11) with many more fourth wall breaks coming from the game and references to real life events. I still recommend you guys to also watch Concluse, though. And Catghost, while you’re at it.

After a successful port to the PlayStation 4 of the excellent Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami, recently reviewed on our site, the Yakuza franchise is back for its ultimate and final episode, supposed to put an end to the Kiryu Kazuma saga. Released back at the end of 2016 in Japan only, the game is finally available in the West thanks to SEGA, with numerous localization updates and changed for our region. Is this the final chapter the series deserve?
If you are reading this review, you are probably familiar with the Yakuza series. For the brave few who would like to start straight away with Yakuza 6, here’s a short summary of what happened so far. In the Yakuza games, you follow the adventures of probably the classiest and most badass of all yakuzas, named Kiryu Kazuma. When he does not kick ass and beat goons, Kiryu takes care of his adoptive niece, Haruka Sawamura. I will not dwell on her story, to avoid any major spoilers, but I will just say that numerous people wanted to see her dead throughout the series.
Yakuza 6 starts right where the 5th game ends. Kiryu is in a bad state and Haruka decides to leave her dream job of being a pop idol to return the orphanage she opened with our favorite Yakuza. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned, with Kiryu sentenced to 3 years in prison for his actions as a yakuza. At the same time, stalkers start attacking Haruka and the orphanage where she is living a peaceful life, mainly because her choice to no longer be an Idol is much more difficult to assume, with heavy harassment in the media and on social networks. Haruka decides to flee the region to avoid bringing her problems to the orphanage. Three years later, when Kiryu is finally released from prison, he discovered that Haruka is in a coma after a car accident, and that she gave birth a year ago to a baby boy named Haruto.
This 6th episode of the Yakuza franchise is a heavy load of emotions. You’ll be dealing as mentioned with subjects as sensitive as that of young teen moms, but also a Kiryu that cannot relax, as he needs to fight against the Chinese mafias and Korean, while improvising his skills a newfound adoptive father to Haruto. If the storyline may seem absurd, it’s because it is, but that’s the beauty of the Yakuza franchise and their insane plots! Faithful to Japanese crime movie influences, with its effective dialogues, its controlled sets and a gameplay of a rare quality in video game productions, the story of Yakuza 6 is a beautifully rendered one. The Dragon Engine, specially built for this episode, does a great job at transcribing the emotions and details on each of the protagonist’s faces. However, I’m slightly disappointed by the rigidity of characters in some scenes, especially when you start comparing them to other Japanese productions that are close to lifelike such as the recent Final Fantasy XV.
The Yakuza series is not only famous for its storyline, but also for its fighting system that is inspired by street fighter games and other beat’em all. Kiryu will not hesitate if necessary to take on three or even ten opponents at the same time, with a facelift of its fighting system and camera features which were one of the weak points of the saga. Much less capricious than in the past, it now features the typical mixtures of quick and heavy attacks, with grabs and new contextual actions such as crushing an opponent’s head against a wall. Unlike previous versions, there is no loading time when you take part of a fight, a transition takes place naturally and instantaneously. Passers-by gathers around you and your opponents to create a makeshift street fighting arena. Chain the basics with the square button and finish your opponents with powerful shots by pressing the triangle button. The fighting is enjoyable and, although there is only one fighting style, it is rare to feel that Kiryu is overpowered in front of enemies. In addition, any object within range can be used to defend you whether it is a bike, a traffic cone or even a beggar sleeping in the street. While it’s definitely not the rigid battles of the previous games, there’s still a lack of fluidity at times where other games like Sleeping Dogs managed to shine.
Each end of a fight will give you experience points divided into different categories to assign as you see fit. This small RPG component is nice but anecdotal because all of your actions in the game give you experience points. Players are never short of experience points and I can maximize Kiryu’s skills a bit too easily (especially with the grinding system). That’s the thing because fighting, completing sidequests and activities, or even taking care of baby Haruto will gain you experience.

On the front of side activities, few titles are as generous as Yakuza 6. The amount of sidequests available is simply breathtaking and the storyline behind them are sometimes hilarious but can be emotional as well. These quests involve things like managing a cat cafe (which I probably wasted too much of my time in), or just simply have fun in one of the Kamurocho arcades. The latter has a fine list of Arcade versions games such as Space Harrier, OutRun, Puyo Puyo and even Virtua Fighter 5 which are all playable as two players! For those wishing for something more “mature”, then you can always go out with hostesses saga, or even play a new minigame which is a live chat app with real women ready to get naughty.
Finally, how can I finish this review without speaking of the way Kabukicho and Hiroshima were reproduced in the game. Yakuza 6 is a beautiful love letter to Japan and all its peculiarities that make it a country as intriguing as it is charming. The sounds, conversations, billboards, bright neon and the architecture of buildings are just amazingly redone in the game. The environments are finally at its best and every little change is appreciated at its true value, offering much more freedom than previous episodes, and you will take a pleasure to get lost in the streets and alleys of these two cities, even if there’s rare invisible walls in some parts. The majority of stalls and shops are accessible without loading time, helping deeply with the immersion, and you can simply order food, or play a little bit and then resume the course of your core activities.
YAKUZA 6: The Song of Life was reviewed using a PlayStation 4 digital download code of the game provided by SEGA. The game was previously only available in Japan, released on the 8th of December 2016. We don’t discuss review scores with publishers or developers prior to the review being published (click here for more information about our review policy).
The most beautiful experience in the series, YAKUZA 6: The Song of Life is great way to close the Kiryu's story in style, with a fun and long adventure, full of content and side activities. Even if you didn't play the previous games, you shouldn't miss this goofy yet also mature and serious game. After a successful port to the PlayStation 4 of the excellent Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami…
