This is the last I’ll say about the “canon Jiang Cheng” wankery.

It has been a spoken and agreed upon rule of Tumblr fandom before there was a Jiang Cheng to love or hate that you DO NOT put your hate in the character and ship tags and that you do tag it with “anti-character name”. The reason is because fans utilize those tags to find and share art, fiction, and discussions about their favorite characters. The tags have always been meant to be a space to bring people together positively.

It’s long been understood that anyone who puts hate in the tag either doesn’t know any better or they just want to start shit. I’m late to the fandom, but my impression of the JC antis and this whole tag mess is that you all just want to start shit and be miserable because honestly, the majority of you all contribute more hate and negativity to fandom than you do anything else. You talk about JC fans being delusional. Ok, and? Even if they are, they’re having fun! They’re making friends with each other and bonding over their love for this character, which is how fandom is supposed to be. You’re worried about this so called delusion because why again?

Ya’ll knew that naming the tag “canon” would be contentious. Different people have different interpretations of canon, but rather than accept that in good faith, you’d rather accuse people of lying, making things up, and being delusional. Do you feel better doing that?

It’s a fictional story we’re all supposed to be having fun with. Yall make shit not fun. I hesitated for a long time to even engage with this fandom because of the amount of hate and vitriol I see antis spewing on a day to day basis. I just recently watched as antis on that confession blog appeared to have gotten their face chewed off enough by JC stans so then they tried it with the JGY stans and proceeded to get steamed rolled again. Yall do this shit to yourselves and cry victim. Stop it. Get some help. Get jobs. Mow the lawn. Do something productive. This ain’t it.

I’m so glad you like Shi Wudu because I do too and it’s rare to find people who don’t hate him in the fandom. Like how can you hate him! He did it all for his brother! It was all for SQX! Was it ethical? Hell no but he’s so compelling as a character! I have /so/ many extremely complicated feelings about Shi Wudu that I could talk for hours about but all I will say is that “I decide my fate and not the heavens” is so metal and I think that there’s so much to say about just that line it makes me go feral. His relationship with Pei Ming also makes me go feral because the amount of trust (love?) that SW must have had in PM to trust him, at his lowest, with the most important thing to him (SQX’s life). Especially considering the fact that SQX has been antagonizing PM and been openly hostile towards him, for what we can only assume is centuries, and yet SW was certain that PM would put all that aside for his sake (and he did!)

Also I am now curious about the JGY stan to SW stan pipeline because it seems like we both experienced it and we can’t possibly be the only ones so now I’m wondering if there are people who like one but not the other and why.

(Also I saw your tags about beefleaf and you managed to capture my feelings about them perfectly. Like no I don’t want to read fluffy modern AUs I want to read fics where they both love each other but it’s not enough, they never choose each other and they’re both miserable and fucked up about it)

yo never apologize for sending long messages with your thoughts/feelings on these characters, i am SO HERE for reading them!! i hadn’t considered the presence of a jgy-to-swd stan pipeline, mostly because when i’ve checked the character tag, i’ve mostly seen comparisons to nmj and nhs. which dgmw, i absolutely believe that nmj loved nhs and wanted to protect him! but we know exactly what nmj would have done to save nhs from an unspeakably awful fate in canon, because that’s already something that is completely within his power to change. and he doesn’t do it.

also absolutely i believe swd loved pei ming—like i don’t think there’s enough in the source material to support a romantic or reciprocated romantic ship there, but that absolutely won’t stop me from doing it anyway, and in canon, it says so much that pei ming is who shi wudu tells shi qingxuan to go to after he dies.

Hi! I wanted to tell you that recently I came across Simmer (and the whole simmer-verse) and O.M.G. It's so good!!! First of all, thank you for the chubby!JGY💘 I didn't even hope I would find something like that (bc the fandom tends to see him as very thin) but you saved me xD

But most of all I admire just how good it is written! It literally taught me a lot of things about this kink that I didn't know about, like the fact that this kink can be non-sexual and I'm actually not doomed to life without it if my partner happens to not have it in a usual way😅 Simmerverse really helped me realise many new things! And also these fics made me like NMJ and NieYao because previously I only have seen them being toxic in fanfics, but after Simmer I started to understand Mingjue's personality and his feelings/trauma about Meng Yao's betrayal QwQ

Hi! Thank you for the lovely ask - the Simmerverse has a special place in my heart, it's always so nice to hear that it meant something to a reader.

You're very welcome for the chubby!JGY content 😁 When I first started out with Simmer I thought it might be just me and one anon on the kinkmeme who'd enjoy seeing him reimagined like that, because yeah, his portrayal in fandom often puts a lot of emphasis on him being thin. Not that there's anything wrong with that - it can be cute, I'm definitely not immune to the appeal of "A-Yao small 🥹" - but it's very different to how I wrote him in Simmer. That might be part of why I did it, honestly. I have a contrary streak a mile wide, so when I saw all those fics cooing over JGY being so tiny and cute I went: OK, but what if he wasn't tiny? Would we still think he was precious, lovable and desirable if he gained weight? Does fitting perfectly in his partner's arms necessarily mean being small? I'm gonna write him getting fat and coo over how cute that is, he'd look good with a tummy. I was (and still am) delighted by how many readers liked it too!

Thank you for all your kind words! I'm glad my fic gave you so much to think about, and especially proud that I won you over to liking NieYao and NMJ. I came to the ship from the opposite direction - I was sad about NMJ and wanted him to be loved instead of murdered, so I dove into fics about NieYao reconciling and ended up loving and sympathising with JGY too. Hearing that my writing made someone who didn't like NMJ before start to sympathise with him feels like closing the loop, and maybe also like I've won some kind of fandom medal.

However, after giving the matter some thought, I came up with a couple: It's all coming back to me now by Celine Dion for when ghost/fierce corpse a-Yao returns to him. Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are for post-canon Lan Xichen, and I'd Lie For You And That's The Truth, also by Meat Loaf for just, like, the general vibes of him and JGY up until the last few days.

a notp: I don't really see the appeal of any ship with LXC other than XiYao. I can cope with most of them - I've even read some decent Lancest - but I have an especial dislike for xisang and xicheng, and I am not a big fan of 3zun because, idk, the vibes don't work for me? I don't know, I just can never really get my teeth into 3Zun, I find it kind of off-putting.

favorite platonic/familial relationships: Ugh big brother LXC is so chef kiss. The way he gently ribs his stuffy baby brother and just wants him to be happy always and forever aaaargh it makes me go feral. I have been known to read fics explicitly tagged Not JGY-Friendly because I was informed they have excellent Lan brothers content, and since JGY is my poorest little meow meow, that's a big deal.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: Himbo Lan Xichen. Like, come on, he's a sect leader, he is apparently the only person in the entire gorram Sunshot Campaign that realised that they needed a fucking spy , and he's the greatest cultivator of his generation. Come on people. You can be intelligent without being an asshole, you know. Just because he's nice and he drank his Respect Meng Yao juice every day doesn't make him a himbo (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻

the position they sleep in: He goes to sleep on his back in proper Lan posture, but he wakes up cuddling his blankets and/or sprawling so as to occupy maximum real estate.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in :SVSSS would be great, because he could use a magic mushroom to make A-Yao a non-dead body, but idk I kind of want him to cross over into like, the most mundane cozy romance you've ever seen in your life? Like, I would like to read a story where literally nothing bad happens ever at all. I want a story where LXC falls in love with this beautiful boy, and the beautiful boy falls in love right back, and it should have an epilogue where they have the world's biggest golden retriever and six cats and a little house in the woods or something.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! I respond to every comment if possible - I think the only ones I might not respond to are where someone says something as a placeholder and that they'll give another comment saying more, but never do. But yeah, every comment however big or small means the WORLD to me, so the least I can do is send back a thank you :D

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I think this is probably Mercy - it ends with NHS foregoing his revenge against JGY to give him a quick death with his reputation intact and it broke my heart to write.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Hard to pick since in general I tend to go the happy/hopeful ending route, and what constitutes a happy ending can be a very individual thing (e.g. for many the "married with children and a white picket fence" is the ideal happy ending, though I'm of a different opinion). If I had to choose, I think it would be a tie between Bed of Roses (modern day SangCheng, where the guys don't just get together but NHS can finally visit with his family again after 2 decades apart), and In This Garden, We Raise a Little Shell (I did the seemingly impossible and gave Jin Zixun a happy ending that people actually seemed to LIKE no romance just a JZXun/Garden ship lol).

8. Do you get hate on fics? Now? No, not really - every now and then there might be a comment that's a little less than stellar, like a criticism of a direction I went in or saying I was too generous in giving a certain character a happy ending, but that's very minor. Once upon a time? Yep - I stared writing back around the turn of the millenium when anti-gay crusaders were ecstatic going onto people sites and commenting that they would be going to hell because they're such sinners, etc - I once wrote a fic where a character was in Montreal with family on the day remembering the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, mostly gen but at the end I had him get a hug from his boyfriend - since I didn't put it as a ship in the description, I had comments, very unpleasant comments, about it.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes!!! I enjoy it, I hope readers enjoy it too. And I've written all kinds - romantic, casual, kinky, mistaken identity, multiple partners, dubious noncon, m/f & m/m (and I have an idea in the works for a f/f). I think the only I haven't written is smut where one is trans (am not trans myself, and I think I would worry too much about how to say things and worry I'm using the wrong terms or being accidentally disrespectful), serious dead dove stuff, or A/B/O (the latter is a squick of mine).

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? I have written crossovers, though very few recently. The craziest one was probably one called Things To Do in L.A. When You’re Insane - it was a crossover between the A-Team, Skinner (an old horror movie with Ted Raimi and Ricki Lake), Lunatics: A Love Story (another movie with Ted Raimi), and Xena: Warrior Princess, where characters from the original 3 modern-day canons were reincarnations of the triplets Joxer, Jett & Jace from Xena. It was weird but fun!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge. Lots of accidental 2Cakes situtations, but that's all.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No - I did receive a comment asking if someone could translate one of my fics into Russian once, but I never heard from them again.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes!!! In 2 different ways. My old fandom friend JoeyRZ and I co-wrote a Xena/seaQuest crossover that turned out so well, and our writing styles were so similar that nobody could tell where one of us started and the other ended :D It was great!!! Also, way back in the day we used to do Round Robins - A story told from one person to another (e.g. the order is chosen at random, one person writes the first scene, the next the following, etc etc until a story is done), sometimes with themes (I remember the centaur sex one and the "copy such and such writer's style" one, both had been on KSAres if I remember right). They were great, low-commitment and high creativity community activities that I would LOVE to see make a comeback!!!

14. What's your all-time favorite ship? For this, I'm going to consider both romantic and platonic ships, and I'll list for a couple of fandoms. Back in my Xena days, I know Joxer/Ares was huge for us Joxer fans, but I was a multi-shipper to the core... so I think actually the platonic Joxer&Xena&Gabrielle was my favourite to explore because they were totally found family :D Back in seaQuest, I loved Tim O'Neill & Miguel Ortiz both platonically and romantically - even when I shipped Tim with other guys, they'd always know that there is no Tim without Miguel :D And currently, even though I enjoy shipping Nie Huaisang with several others, my heart belongs to SangCheng.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Toooo many, I even have a folder titled "Neglected WIPs".

16. What are your writing strengths? I think I'm good at dialogue, and at seeing the world through another character's eyes, particularly to where their opinions and mine might differ greatly.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Figuring out how to end a scene (and keep writing and writing long past when it should have ended), impatience (particularly in the editing stage - I just want to get the damned thing online even if it's less than perfect), lack of confidence in my writing (which affects me actually getting to writing it). I'm having a good day so that's my answer, but on bad days that list can go on far too long.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? It would have to be one I'm familiar enough with, and I would always put a translation next to it - never assume everyone else knows the same combination of languages that you do (e.g. some people have accused me of not being bilingual because I don't speak spanish - doesn't matter that I speak english and french fluently, learned some Russian in uni, and am picking up bits and pieces of random mandarin at the moment, etc etc).

19. First fandom you wrote for? Technically this would be the Muppets - I wrote a story about Gonzo the Great for a class project in 6th grade. But when it comes to grown up fic writing, I think it was Xena - I know I wrote a couple of Red Dwarf fics around the same time so I'm not 100% sure which came first, but Xena was my first HUUUUUGE fandom experience :D

20. Favorite fic you've written? I have no idea how to answer this - I've written a lot in several different fandoms, and there have been ones in each I'm proud of, including fandoms I try to stay away from these days (HP). But maybe because there's so many and they're so varied, I just can't bring it down to one or two favs.

14: that one thing you see in fics all the time

Gosh I've been reading fanfic for almost 2 decades I've seen a lot of shit like look I can forgive moderately bad grammar this ain't lit class it's fine I can even dig a lapslock fic but if you're shit is formatted incorrectly? I can't read it PARAGRAPH BREAKS I BEG the other thing is I hate fics where it's clear the writer embraces more fanon than canon so the character acts more like the fanon version than the canon version (anything w/ stiles and/or sterek is a good example) actually another thing I see a lot of is ppl tagging a secondary ship when that ship is completely unimportant or has like 1 line like just lead them off or hell tag them as minor involvement don't waste my time!!! also tagging a fic with a pairing but it's a love triangle and one char gets with a different char like tag what the end game is don't worry about spoilers this is fanfic for godssake I'm reading for a hobby I wanna know that when I'm reading xx/xx they're gonna end up together!

We Just Don’t Get It: there’s effectively no relationship to speak of in canon, and whatever vibes they’re picking up on must be in the shrimp spectrum.

despite this, it’s disproportionately popular, outpacing the rest of the top 10 ships, that, for the most part, are deeply significant relationships in canon, even if not romantic.

popularity lends itself easily to oversaturation and subsequent annoyance, not to mention how often/badly they’re mischaracterized

the intense popularity in spite of any foundation in canon is baffling and vexing to many of us, but when people question it, a very vocal minority can get aggressively defensive*

i’ve noticed a sense of anger/scorn/disdain at “canon” in general or mentions of it?

the amount of jgy bashing in xi//cheng works/circles isn’t helping* (some ‘takes’ have genuinely been a little concerning)

*as seen on my “worst hits” compilation (i.e. “can you believe this shit” vent post) and in these weird tags someone put on my own joke post

a lot of us have just Seen Enough to have a visceral “eugh” reaction, is all.

As in favorite types of fanfics? I adore canon divergences and time travel kind of fics. Or even characters just talking about that one unaddressed thing. Like fics where wwx talks about his golden core to lwj are *chef’s kiss* my kind of fic. Especially if it’s like in an accidental moment of weakness the truth is revealed 🤭

18. Something You Want To Change In The Story

Hm. I actually wouldn’t change much. I love this story, cruelty and tragedy are a part of it. But if I had to change one thing I know what it would be. It’s more of an addition, but I’d like to see Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian be brothers again. People have their opinions on them but if you ask me, I just want them to have a good relationship. Just like Jin Ling is both from the Jin Clan and the Jiang Clan, I want wwx to be both from the Lan Clan and the Jiang Clan. It’s just… they loved each other so much. Even if it’s just a little at a time, I’d like them both to try to be brothers again.

Okay this answer may be long, so I’m gonna put this under a read more 😆

MDZS/CQL Ask Game

Alright! It’s difficult to choose just one thing because I love this story to pieces 💖. I loved the yi city arc and the repercussions of xue yang’s actions. After two years of living with xxc, what xue yang wants has changed but he is still stuck in his ways and his own actions take away this new comfortable life he was starting to love. I love the confrontation in jin guangyao’s mirror chamber. How lwj and wwx had all the evidence to unmask jgy and by the end of that scene wwx is the one who is unmasked and dying in lwj’s hands as they are forced to flee. I love every scene that involved Wei Wuxian SLOWY realizing his true feelings for his beloved hanguang jun. But my favorite thing. The one thing that makes me go B-A-N-A-N-A-S is the golden core reveal.

Okay, so all of the adaptations handle this differently but to date the way this is revealed in the book is my favorite. Because we read the story through wwx’s eyes. So what he doesn’t want to think about or want others to know, he hides SO WELL. And he REALLY hides the reason he became a demonic cultivator. He convinces himself (and in doing so, he convinces the audience) that it was to destroy the evil wens or because he doesn’t need to cultivate normally. He doesn’t hold a sword anymore because he wants everyone to know he is stronger without it. He boasts and he taunts and I started thinking maybe he’s lying.

Maybe he lost his core at the hands of Wen Zhuliu and that’s why he taunted him with Wen Chao’s disfigured body “I want you to see him this way and realize that you have failed. You have failed in protecting him from me.” Instead of just killing him outright. I was so sure he lost his core but I was also like am I wrong? Why does he never think about his golden core if that’s the case? We never saw him lose it… (In cql there was a scene where jc is healing from his lost golden core in yiling and then wwx begs wq for help of some sort. The latter wasn’t in the book. They were just there for a moment and then they left to baoshan sanren’s mountain) And then wen ning reveals the truth and like ripping off wallpaper everything suddenly made sense.

I’m the type of person to overanalyze. Often times that ends up being a downfall and as it turns out my theories were just a case of me expecting too much from a writer. But the yi city arc left me with an idea. Because there was something bothering me about that arc. It happens so early (around the 20-30 chapter mark). And it seemed like a big stop in the story. Yes, our main characters are there to find the missing body piece of their good brother “mr. severed hand”. But why do we need to know the life and backstory of these characters and leave wwx’s pov to see primarily through A-Qing’s eyes? Why is this important? You could have cut a lot of details and left it at a-qing hates her murderer and xy is a talented demonic cultivator who needs help with one body he can’t bring back to life. And I am of the thought that if it can be cut, then cut it. Side characters aren’t just protagonists of their own separate side stories; they’re best used when defining our protagonist (or another main character) through comparison.

So when we reach the halfway point of the novel and Wei Wuxian takes Jiang Cheng to see Baoshan Sanren to repair his core, the puzzle pieces formed and were begging to be put together. I thought back to the yi city arc and the story of Xiao Xingchen taking Song Lan to Baoshan Sanren to heal his eyes, when in actuality he was giving Song Lan his own. I was like the parallel is clear!! Wwx gave his core to jc instead of ‘helping him form a new one’! But wwx’s own behavior made me toss my theory aside. Because he said so himself. Wei Wuxian didn’t lose his core. And he seemed so sure of himself. Like the very idea was ridiculous. And he had me fooled! I had it solved but the protagonist made me rethink everything. And then to add the cherry on top, after all is said and done and Wei Wuxian is walking to his happy ending, we get to see Jiang Cheng’s point of view. And we discover that all along he never lost his core on a quick revenge scheme as we had been led to believe by wwx. He had lost his core to save wwx. Just as wwx had for him.

I think the main theme of mdzs is that everyone comes in shades of gray and everyone’s capable of great evil or great kindness depending on their circumstances (except maybe a few characters lol). Nhs… hm. The thing is… he’s such a good actor. Even better then jgy. So it all comes down to interpretation. I think he genuinely was a good guy who liked art and goofing off with friends. But the death of his older brother really made him snap. I think the moment he figured out the man who killed his brother was the most powerful cultivator in the Jianghu, he realized he would have to proceed carefully. And he got tunnel vision when thinking of his end goal. He’s just a guy who was put into an awful position and hurt others trying to get to his end goal. But I still think he’s a great character :)

XiSang Fic Recs

I haven’t seen any rec lists floating about, so for the XiSang Week 2020 challenge - Day 7 - Free choice, I wanted to create a rec list of my personal favourites for Nie Huaisang/Lan Xichen ship. There’s actually a lot of stories that are great and I don’t want to duplicate the entire ship tag, so these are just the top 10 that I found super enjoyable: 1.  My Heart is a Saber by peskyjellyfish (~11k)

Summary: Huaisang is on his way to Xinglu Ridge when he gets sidetracked. Rec: This is the fic that gave me everything I wanted to read about them post-canon. Nie Huaisang is angry and damaged, Lan Xichen is hurt and curious, and they find the kind of hope in despair that can only be found together. 2.  come and find me (lying in the bed i made) by ImaginationCake  @demonic-cultivar​ (~22k)

Summary: After Jin Guangyao dies, Nie Huaisang is ready to enjoy his life free from the burden of revenge plots and subterfuge. But his decisions have resulted in a deep guilt that he can't shake, and he struggles to stay afloat with no one left to support him. To top it off, he finds himself tangled up in politics that he really couldn't care less about.What he does care about is Lan Xichen's opinion of him, but Lan Xichen won't even look at him anymore. Nie Huaisang can only hope that his life doesn't get any worse. Rec: The fic that got me into this ship! ♡ I did of course come to AO3 looking for more NHS & LXC content immediately after watching the Untamed. After seeing that ending scene with their conversation on the Temple’s steps I wanted more, but I wasn’t sure it was a romantic ship for me until I read this story. It’s got everything, a kidnapping, a rescue and a bad case of feelings :D 3.  A Skilled Tactician is the Jewel of a Kingdom by Hypatia3 (~50k, WIP) Summary: During the Sunshot Campaign, Nie Huaisang wants to help despite his terrible sword skills. But there are other things he's good at, and nobody can say his mind is weak. But nobody has to know.After all, he wants to go back to his life of general uselessness after the war is over, and Nie Mingjue would never allow it if he saw a single sign of competence from him.But this has consequences that he didn't expect. Rec: One of the absolute best stories in this fandom when it comes to Nie Huaisang’s characterization -- he’s clever and yet so very Huaisang, in such a believable way that *hands* I can’t explain how much satisfaction I get out of reading and rereading this story. Honourable mention:  A Decisive Victory by Hypatia3 (~24k, WIP) Summary: When Jin Guangyao acts against the Nie Sect a little earlier, Nie Huaisang ends up in over his head as acting sect leader. But he has a responsibility and a duty to his sect. His brother is counting on him until he recovers.Or Nie Huaisang loses his temper, starts a war, and impresses a lot of people along the way. Rec: This is not marked XiSang, and is a divergence from the earlier Tactician story (around chapter 7) but it’s such fun to read and Huaisang’s interactions with Lan Xichen are top notch, so I can’t help mentioning it here.

4.  from tomb to tomb by @the-pretzel​  (~16k)

Summary: It's a lot easier to get truth out of someone, even one with a very good reason to lie, when they're drunk. Or, five times Nie Huaisang was drunk and once it was Lan Xichen's turn instead. Rec: Written to capture moments over the years during the course of the show, as Lan Xichen and Nie Huaisang dance around each other, this story is absolutely beautiful and vivid. I can still see the scenes of the story pop up in my head like drawings, of Lan Xichen walking in on semi-hungover Nie Huaisang and the sheer tension between them enough to keep you breathlessly reading.

Honourable mention:  when i'm reborn by @the-pretzel (~1.1k)

Summary:  Nie Huaisang's daemon settles the day he finds out what Jin Guangyao has done. (His Dark Materials fusion) Rec: A very short, very lovely daemon AU, which I’m definitely reading as XiSang :)

5.  What I had to do by @ibijau​ (~20k) Summary:  After three years in seclusion, Lan Xichen gets an unexpected guest he would rather have avoided. Yet when he learns that Nie Huaisang is dying from a curse, he is forced to confront his guilt toward Jin Guangyao's fate and the people his sworn brother hurt. Rec: I’d say this is a fandom classic, so you’ve probably read it already :D But, one of my favourite things about this story is the way it captures Nie Huaisang running away from emotions, and Lan Xichen being selfless when it comes to those he cares about. 6.  gather jewels from graveyards by LuckyDiceKirby (~15k) Summary: Nie Huaisang stole happiness from Lan Xichen. He stole peace. If he could just see him, and see for himself exactly what he’s done, and know—that will be enough. Then he’ll be able to paint again, and his hands won’t shake as he does it, and he’ll remember why he ever in his life bothered to put brush to ink to paper. After all, a man should have to live with his mistakes. There is no other way to learn from them. His brother believed that. Rec: One of the first stories I read for this ship and so well done! This is one where Nie Huaisang feels very guilty, and who doesn’t enjoy reading that? Nie Huaisang comes to the Hanshi to make amends, and doesn’t go away when Lan Xichen won’t see him.

7.  When the world is cold (I will feel a glow) by @marsdiogenes (~3k)

Summary: Xichen is trying very hard to get his crush to notice him, but gallery curator Nie Huaisang has a job to do and would appreciate it if Lan Xichen's beautiful face would stop for a moment so he can focus. Mingjue just wants to have a nice, quiet family dinner and for everyone to respect his efforts.

Rec: I don’t normally go for Modern AUs for this ship, but this was so fun and sexy! Also Nie Mingjue’s knowing reaction is :3 8.  to embrace doubt by fensandmarshes, Fleetling, idendreams, medievalfantasyqueen, space_enjolras, sxnshot (blasphemyincarnate)

Summary: Five times people thought they understood Nie Huaisang + one time someone admitted they didn’t - a collaborative, semi-chronological character study of Nie Huaisang through other characters’ eyes. Rec: Okay, it’s technically not marked shippy, but you tell me that someone who thinks about Nie Huaisang the way Lan Xichen does in this story, in the chapter that’s from his pov can possibly not love him, and I won’t believe it. The lyrical prose is the best description in a paragraph I’ve ever read of Nie Huaisang.

9.  Love of my life, I hate you by Ibijau (~126k) Summary:  With Qishan Wen growing ever more powerful and menacing, QInghe Nie and Gusu Lan decide to cement a firm alliance between their sects through a marriage between their children. Lan Xichen and Nie Huaisang are less than thrilled to learn this, but nobody is asking for their opinion anyway Rec: At first, I wasn’t sold on Lan Xichen being so thoughtless in his treatment of Nie Huaisang as a child and mostly wanted to smack him, but damn if the later events don’t make up for it, make him grow up, and turn the tables around. :D This story is utterly satisfying to read, like one of those novels that give your Id everything you want, eventually. I love slow burn and this is that in spades! So much fun, I’ve re-read parts of it multiple times already.

Honourable mention: Ibijau has so many interesting XiSang stories, like the one where Jin Rusong survives and Nie Huaisang ends up raising him (Second Chances For First Time Villains), and the one where Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang, both in love with someone else, make a marriage match and solve crimes together ( We can light a match and burn it down), the god!LXC AU, and many others. Check them out! And finally,

10.  Chapter 95: LXC finds out about JGY and tells NHS,  from MDZS short fics by nirejseki ( @robininthelabyrinth) (~1k) Summary:  In that AU where LXC pretends to be LWJ and discovers NMJ's head, what if he went on a quest to put the body of his old friend together and along the way accidentally ran into NHS who's on the same mission. And they realize the other knows! Rec: Nirejseki writes a lot of great Nie brothers content, and this is one short story that can arguably turn into XiSang in the future. The possibilities of this AU make it so exciting, I had to include it on the list even though NHS and LXC only talk and nothing else happens.  ...Okay, that was more than ten fics here, but can you blame me? 😍 I love these two together. And with the XiSang week running we have so much new stuff!

As someone who has come into the fandom as a Wangxian fan first, I am going to say that it is mostly Wangxian fans who were problematic. When I saw how toxic they were to JC fans, JGY fans, BottomJi, and Chengxian fans, I couldn't stand being around them, so I left. I also saw how they attacked other fandoms and seemed to put Wangxian above any other ship, acting all haughty and holier than thou about it. It disgusted me, and it honestly made me very disappointed in the fandom.

Whilst there are toxic JC fans who may be bullies, I'm coming out here to say that we don't claim or condone them. And I've seen many JC fans share that same sentiment as me. I am yet to see any Wangxian fans claim any responsibility and apologise to us for how terribly their fans have treated us.

Wangxian is a much bigger fandom than the JC fandom, so whilst there are bad eggs in ours who may hound you, we get the hounding a lot more and are bulied and jumped on in the droves.

You're allowed to hate JC and you're allowed to write your meta on him. All we ask is to stop the hate campaign against US. Let us use the canon JC tag (since we are using it for our interpretations as you are yours) and address the bullies in your fandom. That's all.

Favorite character: Need I say it? I think you know it’s my murder gremlin Xue Yang, who I still can’t believe didn’t catch my eye until Yi City. Runner-up is JC, who was my favorite all through my first watch.

Favorite friendship: Going to say WWX/WQ, as I love how that develops from cold aloofness. I love the depth and respect there but she deserved better and deserved to be mentioned more than once after the time-skip! Runner up is NHS/JGY because of the fun character dynamics of it all falling apart spectacularly.

Favorite ship: XueXiao all the way, baby. “Heartless” villain falling for his too-pure-for-this-world archenemy and becoming a happy househusband? Yes please!

Favorite Sect: Going to have to go with Jiang. They’re the only clan I’d last in for more than a day. The Jin are too snooty and materialistic, the Lan too rigid (great library and HQ, though!), the Wen are cool but all dead, and the Nie is like perpetual gym class.

Favorite Sword: Xue Yang’s sword is brutal yet elegant, but it’s really the double blade that puts it over the top. JC’s amazing sword comes next. Really, all of the swords on this show are incredible.

I feel you 100%. Every time I log on, I risk seeing just the most insane and disingenuous takes. I try to ignore them, but I just can't allow such blatant misrepresentation of the characters to go on like this. It's as you say, misleading to new fans and paints an unfair picture of the characters.

Literally, most of the things I've seen under the canon JC tag have all been complete ass pulls, with literally zero evidence to back their claims at all. Like JC being a woman hater and now someone who veiws his sister as a commodity?? Like, really?? I have to ask if we have read the same book as them. Or do they really hate the character that much that they've imagined all the crimes they have accused him of committing?

JC is a flawed character. But there are parts of him that is loving and caring (though he doesn't outwardly show it). MXTX herself said he wasn't a bad person. If he saw his sister as just an object, MXTX certainly wouldn't refer to him as such. Plus, the canon facts just completely disapprove that ridiculous accusation anyway.

JC held so much respect for his sister that he sought vegance for her after her death. If she was just a commodity to him, he would NEVER go to that extreme to avenge her. Nor would he have wanted to take up his responsibility as uncle and look after JL, who was already well cared for by the Jins anyway.

It's all this and the accusations that you're an "abuse apologist, a genocide apologist (yes, they have even accused us of supporting the genocide in Palestine previously for liking JC) etc" is what has driven me away from Wangxian tbh. So I completely understand how you'd feel that way. Because I have been there too 😔

I try not to let them push me away, though, because that would mean conceding to bullies, which I refuse to do. They have already bullied a friend of mine off the app before with terrible accusations, just for appreciating JC's character. I refuse to be another victim of their bullying. All I can do is offer my opinions on here and balance the argument. Because the opinions on JC are so skewed that at this point, they're really resorting to just making things up about him or overinflating his actions just to hate on him and weaponise his character against his fans even more.

It is honestly such a cruel thing to do.

Fandom is meant to be a fun space, as you said. I come here to retreat from the world. So, to see such nasty vitriol on here is disheartening to see, I agree. I really don't think they understand how toxic they have made the fandom. Because bear in mind, they don't just treat JC fans like this, but JGY ones too. Heck, I've seen them attack other ships outside of MDZS and claim that theirs is somehow more superior, as well.

It just makes our fandom look like a joke. And whilst I may get a bit reactionary and sarky in my response posts to them, I do try to encourage polite debates whereever possible.

I'm a very argumentative person. So I'm happy to debate with anyone who has opposing opinions to mine, so long as they're respectful. The problem is, most JC antis I've come across here are incapable of that and just resort to nasty accusations and name calling instead as we have seen in the tag. It just ruins the fun of debating entirely. Especially when they blatantly refuse to see things from JC and his fans' perspectives at all.

For this reason, I suppose just blocking them is the best option so you can curate your timeline. It shouldn't have to come to that but these people just don't know how to use proper manners at all. Plus if you don't block them.. You'll run the risk of being dogpiled, attacked and harassed simply for having a positive opinion on JC, just like my friend was :')

In short, please don't feel disheartened or put off from debating here. I love reading how other people have interpreted the character, so long as they're polite and reasonable. Hearing opinions from other fans can be refreshing to see instead of the same, regurgitated ass pull takes I have seen around here lately. 😅

Leaving the fandom will just mean that these toxic fans have succeeded in doing what they sought to achieve. And we mustn't let them win. Let's show them that the fandom still has some warmth in it. And that you don't need to be a belligerent asshole when giving your opinions 😂

To say JC was disrespecting his sister's sacrifice by blaming WWX for her death is a bit of a reach, honestly. Especially since that's obviously his trauma speaking. Merely him trying to put the blame onto someone because sometimes, when we grieve, we feel better when there is someone to blame. Something to attribute those feelings to and hope that by hunting it down, maybe they'll finally go away? And that maybe he will finally get the answers and feelings of closure he yearns for when he does?

We see his conflicted feelings throughout the latter part of the story and how he struggled with them, after all (Which is another tragic aspect of his and WWX's character, which we can't ignore).

Even then, you could argue that in the moment, that was just how JC perceived and rationalised things. WWX did lose control at Nightless City. And whilst it wasn't intentional, and this time by the hands of someone else, rather than his own "zombies", we can see why JC would rationalise it to be WWX's fault. That's what trauma does to a person.

Also, the implications that JC sees his sister as some "commodity" is just wrong and unfairly misrepresenting his character, too. Sorry. Especially whilst he respected all of her wishes throughout. Be it her choice to marry JZX or not, despite JC and WWX hating the dude.

Allowing her that choice to either reject the arrangement (which was hugely beneficial for the sect btw and something families did back then), or accept it by choice is a big deal for a dude of that period tbh. Especially whilst JC effectively had "control" over his sister (which again, he never exercised. She was always the big sister to him, whose word he respected. We see this when he confides in her during the search for WWX during the war). So no. She wasn't a commodity for him. JC started a siege over this woman. He loved her dearly and to reduce their relationship to something so surface level is disingenuous and so not what the author wanted to convey in her work. Js.

To sum up, whilst JC was factually wrong to accuse WWX of the death of his sister, we can see beneath the surface why he reached that conclusion, regardless of the facts.

Context matters greatly here. And WWX did inadvertently bring that threat to them. What doesn't help is also the events that took place before this.

WWX refused to open up to JC when prompted. He kept things from him prior to the incident and just.. Looked culpable as heck for everything despite actually being innocent (especially since this took place not long after the death of his brother in law which was apparently by WWX's hands). All feelings of confusion, anger and grief were bound to mount up and unfortunately, WWX was going to be the outlet for all that because behind it all, there he was. Looking responsible for all that went wrong for JC (despite us as the reader knowing that there's more to the situation than that and that wasn't true. But remember, JC doesn't see what we see. So it's only natural he's going to attribute all that's gone wrong in his life to the man that was always there, somehow at the core of it -ahem. No pun intended there!-).

But all this aside, you've got to remember that JC does let WWX go in the end anyway. He drops all feelings of malice as the truth comes out and he learns that WWX wasn't actually fully responsible for everything he accused and hated him for.

To still hate JC for initially blaming WWX for the cause of JYL's death is a bit silly tbh, especially when they effectively closed that chapter at the end of the book and moved on anyway.

JC doesn't pursue him anymore for answers and nor does he continue to hold him accountable for everything. To bring up his old feelings when the book is finished and all has been put to bed is unfair tbh. Especially when some of you won't even put yourself in JC's shoes and try to come to understand how he came to that conclusion in the first place.

sometimes I forget (200) - This fic is very special to me (first completed multichap, Chengning) so I'm happy to see it as the first. I think my writing abilities have grown since then, but I'm still very satisfied with the story.

seven nights to turn (195) - My other Chengning multichap, close behind! This is my personal favorite so I'm thrilled by the reception it got. I loved digging deep into JC and WN's emotions in this fic.

thermal scheming (192) - Fluffy Sangcheng oneshot, one of my older fics. I'm honestly shocked it did this well!

Every single one! I love getting author replies when I comment on fics, so I do the same for comments I receive. I'm really grateful for readers and want to tell them that.

A lot of times I don't know what to say besides "thank you" and a keysmash and some emojis...but if I see an opportunity to slip in a short ramble about my fic I'll take it :D

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Hm...I do write some angst but never really end with angst. Maybe Writing Out Days (sad Burial Mounds Wen siblings) but that fic is less than 1k so it's not like much happened to be wrapped up with an "ending", per se. The ending of sometimes I forget is kinda angsty, but then the little bonus chapter after it is pure fluff...idk man...

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I would say no, because I'm not interested in writing or reading crossovers, and yet I impulse-wrote a MDZS/TGCF fic where Sandu's sword spirit meets Hua Cheng 🤷

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I got visited by the Xiyao troll once! It was a magical experience. The best part is that LXC and JGY had said hello, once, and the comment wasn't even on that chapter. I hadn't even gotten to the background Xiyao yet (and never will bc that fic is 100% abandoned)

Do you write smut? if so what kind?

Kind of! I'll occasionally include non-explicit sex. Little ace me can only handle so much 😅 I only have one fic with actual smut (seven nights to turn) and even then it's...idk. Not that detailed? What’s your all time favorite ship?

Chengning! Specifically post-canon. They have so much history to work with! I like the ship for the parallels, the way they have to confront both each other and themselves, the hurt/comfort, the fact that it's my two favorite characters...

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

1) Wen Ning's POV during WWX's second life - what the Ghost General does when no one's looking. Basically a character study with some side adventures and introspection.

2) A post-canon case fic thing involving Nightless City mostly focusing on JC's relationships with WWX and JL. Maybe WN too. But it would be so much work and despite the idea sitting in my head for a few months and a few pages written, I still don't have the plot straightened out.

What are your writing strengths?

Well. Um?? Going based on comments I've gotten, I can sometimes effectively evoke emotion! And some people enjoy my sense of humor.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I sometimes struggle to make my vision clear, especially when explaining what characters are thinking/feeling or if I have some unnecessary meta that I'm determined to put into the fic. I'm also not the best at planning lengthy plots (or committing to them).

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I basically only read fic for Chinese novels/dramas, and I enjoy seeing original-language terms used (titles, genre-specific words, foods, etc.). Not sure how I'd feel about other fandoms because I haven't encountered that in a fic yet.

AO3 has a cool feature that lets you hover over a block of text on desktop (tap on mobile) and it reveals the translation. I've used it before. I feel like this is a good option unless the fandom would be familiar with the dialogue in another language.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

MDZS/CQL!

We are not counting the "original story" I wrote in middle school that was basically The Outsiders with different names

Hmmm I'm not sure if this means putting out content to the fandom or just me coming up with crack shit in general, BUT my favorite crack ship is simply JC and JGY because they legit co-parented JL for YEARS and I love coming up with hilarious and frustrating scenarios for them.

My favorite crack theory is a joke my friend Sabrina and I came up with, where NHS tormented JGY for ten years with the most ridiculous shit. Like interrupting Xiyao's tea dates to complain about his problems, antagonizing other leaders during conferences to make them longer and more painful, letting 30 Nie juniors loose in Lanling with spending money, buys JL 5 ponies just because, or buying JRS trumpets and drums and non washable paints he gets all over the walls of Koi Tower, is the Master of setting JC off just by wearing the same perfume JYL used to wear, etc.

...Am I writing a ficlet about this crack theory one day? Yes.
