Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2023)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
The duality of man is summed up in me watching this immediately after Cocaine Bear. This film, especially as a wee dessert for Cocaine Bear is highly recommended.
This animation style was super satisfying, almost like a cross between the typical Dreamworks style with nods to comic book stylings. Gorgeous and genius.
The journey you take with these characters are so well written as well. There are themes of hope, trust, forgiveness, family, fear of death, asking for help and love all in a movie… *checks notes* for children⁉️ Dang, ok, the kids are being fed well today.
This movie was totally cinematic.
John Mulaney makes a good villain… and I will not elaborate on that.
Watch this movie if:
You adore stunning animation
You are a fan of quests with loveable characters
Redemption
Titles similar to this:
Other titles in the Puss in Boots Cinematic Universe (PiBCU), so that you may see the legend himself

the fact that puss didn’t realize that death was, you know, death until the fourth time he saw him when death had to literally spell it out for him. like my mans really thought it was just some weirdo bounty hunter obsessed with death motifs and metaphors and whanot who somehow managed to drive him into a blind panic with his mere presence. orange cat behaviour.

something about the way Kitty can't help but end up trusting and loving others despite all the ways she has been hurt, and her own insistence that she does not trust others. The way that she so naturally falls into trusting Puss when he shows a modicum of honesty and genuine emotion to her.
I think Kitty is someone who has a lot of love in her heart, a fact she hates about herself because it leads to her getting burned quite often. She feels like she cannot ever truly practice what she preaches and just stay away from caring. Even, towards the end, she gives up her wish to Puss, not because she thinks he deserves it more, but because at that point, even wishing for someone to trust feels like a failure on the part of herself to just learn her damn lesson and stay away.
Which is why it is so important that she finally gets what she needs through Puss. That she witnesses him fighting for his life instead of running, fighting for his right to love her for the short time on this earth that he has left. She needed to hear this from somebody, that she is worth caring about. More than just a cute pet that looses its luster when it starts scratching the furniture, more than just a fleeting fancy abandoned the moment something goes wrong. She finally has someone tell her she is worth recieving the love and trust she so easily gives, in equal measure.

i find it extremely funny how dreamworks created this god awful, completely unloving, irredeemable villain to present to the internet. On top of that, they made him as conventionally unattractive as possible, PLUS he was voiced by JOHN MULANEY. and they completely expected us to drag him and hate him to eternity but OH BOY OH MAN
so this is my interpretation of that
Dreamworks: so, we can all agree to hate this guy, right? i mean he's completely unfeeling as he lets his men get slaughtered in the span of twenty minutes, he's absolutely spoiled and entitled and wants to literally take over the world, he-
Us: he's definitely a babygirl
Dreamworks: a fucking what

Death in puss in boots pt 2
His voice, his voice was perfect it was deep it was kinda raspy and it left you feelin nervous, also his introducion was amazing, no big show a little set up it was quick and it was strong It was exacly how it shoud have been becuse honestly i love my over the top villians But What I love even more are the villians i am accualy afraid of exaple I love izma from emparors new groove, but dear god if I had to choose between seeing her or seeing HIM from ppg I woudn't think twice about my choice even though I love her
But I fear HIM and the villians that are on the other side of the screen (or on both sides with the movie reminding you that) it just hits diffrent and it hits right
Dreamworks doesn't mess around with ther villians and I wanna just kiss the for that DEATH himself Was done right by them and that movie deserves awards for that!
Dreamworks I reach my hands to you You killed it with this one like always But this time Oh you were perfect, accualy perfect with it

Why the fuck do I get hyperfixated on DreamWorks stuff, some of it is genuinely good quality shit (Puss In Boots The Last Wish, Megamind) and some of it is just childsih stuff that they added a smidge of emotion to (Penguins of Madagascar, Mr Peabody and Sherman)

my hot PiB take for the night is that i think ppl who think perrito is completey unaware that his backstory is sad and traumatizing are wrong.
Certainly some of it is normalized to him, but the way he tells it reminds me of the way i tell stories from my bad family life. Its not that we aren't aware it isn't funny, but like. Sometimes its all so ridiculous how bad it all is, how are you supposed to tell it? Especially when you're not sure how the people around you are going to react. Dramatic, tear-jerking reveals about your trauma like in the movies often just get a lot of awkward attempts at sympathy from people who never went through anything like that and don't know what to say. And they feel ingenuine anyways, bc that's not what it feels like to actually live through it.
Perrito has a lot of emotional maturity as well, and he understands more than he lets on. Why else would "therapy dog" be a goal of his if he didn't understand, on some level, that he has been hurt, and subsequently know about how to heal from said hurt? It would be a wildly coincidental career choice if he didn't get it in some capacity.
I think he simply doesn't like to dwell on or over-dramatize what happened to him, but probably overshoots it a bit and so instead ends up making his backstory sound like a morbid joke.

Me: “Why’s everyone gushing about the new Puss in Boots sequel? Eh, might as well check it out, I haven’t gone to see a movie in theaters in a while.”
