Love is one of the most complicated things about our human existence. We’re all stumbling around, holding onto past baggage, carrying burdens and doubt and guilt, trying to fight through the mess of our hearts and find another imperfect being to share ourselves with.⠀ ⠀ We’re all learning who we are, then rediscovering that person standing next to someone else. Valentine’s Day

Yesterday, it was hard to remember that it was Valentine’s Day. This year, Valentine’s Day fell on a Sunday, aka the day of doing and catching up on your homework. But, what is it like on Valentine’s Day on-campus? Well, it is just like any other day really. However, for me, it has almost been a year exactly, since I stepped foot onto Argentine soil to study abroad. So, for me, I chose to sit down on Valentine’s Day and remember how far I’ve come and the people that I love--the ones who’ve inspired me into the woman that I am today.

I'm impassioned by traveling; excited by the chance to create something beautiful, I’ve yearned to join the Peace Corps, and I’ve hoped to do something good for humanity. I want to learn what I can do for the world, instead of being a deadbeat nuisance to it (perhaps, like I have been). It is scary to find who we are in the final months of my undergraduate degree. I don’t know what is next. I do not see a finish line after May 14th. With this in mind, I also realize that it is just as (or more) scary to lose the chance to live.

I don't want to lose life or the chance to run with the (philosophical) beauty of living. I want to be nomadic and accept my fear. Like I did when I was in Argentina.

I’ve asked myself, “Who is this fearful person that I've become lately?” It isn't me. I didn't climb 1,200 Incan steps to discover (for myself), the Lost City of the Incas, or choose to save every penny in order to take a trip to the southern-most tip of South America, to be afraid not. Did I? Life is for the living, Right? Well, why do I feel so dead today? In these moments, I have to rejuvenate myself because I will not accept a mundane lifestyle; a lifestyle that kills my spirit.

All I want to do with my life is to instill love in the hearts of those I meet. That is, in lieu of being someone who disseminates hatred and puts success in the place of everyone else. This is what I've been doing, and I have been seeking a way to fix it. I've done a bad job of living-up to the standards that I have set for myself. Love is not hate.

I haven't been living up to my fullest potential, which is my fault only. I want to love the world and to care for it deeper. 

I am fearful of who I am becoming. The world is so full of evil and when we fail, failure will easily rub off on us (its victim). I've come to learn that the world will unhesitatingly use our weaknesses to crush our courage and create formidable realities that we cannot escape. Realities that I cannot even begin to imagine or comprehend. If I do, my very core shudders and breaks, due to my clear inadequacy to fix any of it.

In closing, I have been thinking and reflecting on the passage below. Thus, I wanted to share it with you now. Reading it, you will notice that I fall short of it and I hope to improve. Anyways, here it is:

If I could speak all the languages of the world, but I do not love, I am like a noisy gong, clanging nonsense into ears of those I meet.

If I have the gift of intelligence and I could fathom all mysteries of the earth, but I do not love--my gifts are worthless.

If I have faith that could move mountains, but I do not love--I am nothing.

If I gave away everything that I owned to the poor, and gave away my body to their hardships, but I still do not love--I gain nothing.

You see, love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil, but it rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, it always trusts, it always hopes, it always perseveres.

LOVE NEVER FAILS!

Where there are scholars, academia will one day cease;

Where there are languages, they will one day be gone;

Where there is knowledge, it will soon be replaced.

I ignored this when I was a child. I talked like a child, I thought like a child and I reasoned "love" like a child. When I became an adult, I put the ways of my childhood behind me and tried to love unconditionally.

When we love unconditionally, we need three things in varying degrees: faith, hope and love. Faith in life, hope in the world and love for each other. But, the greatest of these is love.
