i've never been able to convince myself people into music-based subcultures exclusively for the fashion are entirely posers. these are music based scenes so yes it's a little odd, and sure they're more likely to fall into consumerist habits- but you (generally) have to pay for music or access to clubs and venues so it's not like the rest of us are immune (and none of us have to fall into consumerists habits anyway). if fashion is a type of communication and self expression through art, and is so deeply associated with most subcultures as to be almost a dress code, then i see no reason why it's significantly less valid a mode of participation than a shared and publicly displayed love of music- another form of communication and self expression through art. if you can be goth but not dress the part i feel like you could make a good argument that you can be goth and not listen the part. i understand defending the origin of a subculture you care about but it's not 1979 anymore things have changed. definitions are always reshaping themselves around time. sometimes it feels like it's just a rejection of fashion as a legitimate art form more than anything, which is absurd because it's one of the loudest and most immediate forms of cultural connection, communication and self expression we have as a species. i don't think it's what anyone means, but i always wonder

You can be morally bankrupt, and ethically pure. Or morally pure, and ethically bankrupt. It's the difference between doing the wrong thing for the right reasons and the right thing for the wrong reasons.

That, and trying to be morally or ethically pure is bullshit. Unless you're the second coming of Christ, or the next Buddha, it ain't possible. You don't need to be a saint to be a good person. You may be a little reprehensible, as a treat.

this might be another genre of posts that only i understand but. am i the only one who gets annoyed when ppl say they like their faves purely bc they're 'unproblematic' 😭 purity culture hurts my soul bc i see ppl time and time again care way more about the absence of mistakes (i.e. perfection, which mind you is impossible) than actually doing good or trying to improve yourself. and nine out of ten times their faves aren't even 'unproblematic' (or what fits their definition of what they believe to be unproblematic) they have said and done things in the past that were either wrong or hurtful bc newsflash we have all made mistakes or misspoken before. its just that with creators specifically, some were lucky enough not to have their mistakes broadcasted to a huge audience, and some were not.

i just hate the fact that some ccs can say or do smth mistakeningly and they're never seen as redeemable by ppl like this no matter how much they grow and change as ppl, or apologise or make amends, because even though the person they are now is different than the person that made that mistake, in these ppls' eyes they will be tied to that mistake forever, because of the fact that what is put on the internet stays there forever. especially when continually brought up and circled around even many years later. and every time i've seen that happen it's done for malicious intent, not because these ppl actually care about the cc improving as a person.

Casually lurking in Sailor Moon fandom and when I see posts mentioning the Shitennou's knightly titles, I think the translation are off. I don't know if those are just fansubs being wonky, or if even the official ones are not entirely correct...

I've also seen some posts say that "I don't understand what these means". The knightly titles are based on the image and properties associated with each gemstone in Japanese (so, if it has different meanings internationally, it's quite beside the point).

Jadeite: Knight of Resilience 忍耐 and Harmony 調和

忍耐 is often translated as "Patience" in fanworks. 忍耐 is better translated as "resilience", "perseverance", or "endurance". Even when colloquially used to say "be patient", the connotation of it is more along the lines of "endure this". The Harmony one is correct.

"Resilience" is because jadeite jade is the harder jade. "Harmony" because of its traditional usage in spiritual matters, so jade in general has the image of "peacefulness".

Nephrite: Knight of Wisdom 知恵 and Peace 安らぎ

This one makes me kind of laugh because of what Nephrite is like as a character/person. I almost always see 知恵 translated as "Intelligence". It's not wrong per se, but this term here refers to something deeper than just brain smarts, thus "wisdom". Things like wisdom that come from age, or innate perceptiveness, and so on.

安らぎ is peace, as in "inner peace". Basically, "serenity", though it's probably not a good idea to use this word in Sailor Moon for obvious reasons.

Nephrite being the native jade of China, it has been given very sagely meaning to it that persist even in Japanese symbolism. That's why it's like this, for somewhat similar reasons to jadeite's "harmony".

Kunzite: Knight of Virtue 純潔 and Benevolence 慈愛

純潔 can also mean Purity or Chastity. 慈愛 is sometimes translated as Affection, which is also not entirely wrong. It's just that the standard meaning is benevolence or mercy. "Affection" tends to be used in the context of parents and children. In this context probably not the best meaning to use.

This gemstone is associated with the Holy Mother Mary, of all things, that's why it's got very saintly imagery associated with it.

Zoisite: Knight of Purification 浄化 and Healing 癒し

The most straightforward one so I've never seen any wonky translation with this one. Those who are into healing crystals might already know this, but this title is based on the healing and purification qualities that a blue zoisite/tanzanite supposedly have.
