Camping at Sids Farm — Weekend outing from Hyderabad
Run a simple google search on the word “Escape” and you would most likely end up with a result that connotes “to slip or get away, as from confinement or restraint; gain or regain liberty”. Yet to many corporate city dwellers like me the word holds superlative value beyond the wisdom of a dictionary. It is a way for us to express the unsaid and live the uninhabited. A getaway that lets us explore the uncharted ourselves, to unwind and rejuvenate. Most often than not, this escape is not necessarily a far flung dream. Rather it could be something rudimentary right in your backyard awaiting its discovery.
I found my backyard treasure when we planned a day’s outing at Sid’s Farm. Just 50 kms from Hyderabad, a fun filled evening, delicious food and deep discussions made Sids Farm a perfect escape within an arm’s reach. Though a farm does not sound like a place to escape, wait to read the complete travelogue and then decide for yourself.
Weekend outing options from Hyderabad Nestled near the Chevella village, the journey from Hyderabad to Sids Farm itself was memorable. Taking Chevella road from Himayat sagar, the roads seemed to be better than most of Hyderabad, both in terms of traffic and potholes. Before Chevella, turning left to Shadnagar — Chevella road brought us on a wonderful patch of road with endless fields on both sides. You then turn right towards a narrow street and might require personal directions to reach the farm as the path is not properly available on google maps when we publish this.
Upon reaching the farm around 5 PM on saturday evening, we were received by our host Shivam. In his twenties, Shivam answered his call and left his illustrious overseas career to work towards his ideology of sustainable future. Currently he overlooks the operations of the farm and double hats during the weekends welcoming guests with a smile. We also met Kishore who is the owner of the farm. Shivam showed us around the farm and we were divided into teams who would be taking up different tasks from fetching wood sticks and lighting up the charcoal fire to pitching tents, chopping veggies and skewing the barbeque. In the meanwhile along with evening high tea we were demonstrated how to pitch tents and the associated tips and tricks.
We had biscuits and tea as everyone gathered again taking a break from their assigned activities. This whole idea of community living is new to us Indians who generally prefer comforts of a bed and room service if they happen to take a break on weekends and go out visiting some place. But here we were in an isolated farm learning and carrying out basic chores on a weekend which is usually spent in malls, movies or restaurants. It felt good, it felt different. And there was a unique joy that I sensed when everyone did their bits for the common purpose of cooking delicious food and having a good time. The kids especially were having fun seeing ducks and cows. The cycle, tractor and football added more fun to the evening.
As the orange hues in the sky marked the advent of dusk, we all took a moment off from our assigned chores to appreciate the sublime environs of the isolated farm. Silence that is often subdued in the cacophony of the bustling metropolis was in abundance, only to be perturbed by chirping of the birds returning back to their nests. The darkness brought intermittent showers which played a borderline spoilsport. Hats off to the gutsy spirit of all who relentlessly kept up the barbeque and cooking hopping between the indoor kitchen and the outdoor charcoal pit. A rigorous effort to light up the damp wood sticks camp fire followed the dinner. It took considerable splashes of kerosene to beat the monsoons and then there was no stopping the blazing fire. Everyone was content with the efforts of the evening as they had a fulfilling dinner.
Time always takes a back seat when you are engrossed in sharing life experiences, and we were no different to this. We engaged in interesting conversations through the night with Shivam and Kishore. We were so curious to know their past and what brought them here to this farm.
Kishore, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus and PHD from University of Massachusetts worked for 6 years at Intel corp before realizing how difficult it was to get healthy, pesticide & chemical free food. He wanted his children (The farm is named after his son — Sid) to always get healthy and natural food. This desire made him leave his lucrative corporate job and move back to India to set up farms which fulfilled this need. They explained us how they feed natural grass to their cows and do not inject any hormones to boost milk production. They do not add any preservatives to their milk. They provide this natural milk to various parts of Hyderabad everyday.
We enjoyed experimenting with night photography as the night grew darker. Being away from the city the skies are pretty clear and thus gives many opportunities to click the night sky. However as it rained, most of the sky was cloudy and we could not do astrophotography, so we settled for the next best thing. Long exposure shots of objects around us. We retired into our tents with satisfaction in our minds and tranquility in our souls. Surprisingly we couldn’t find a single mosquito though we were quite prepared to handle them. The following morning we planted trees, helped in few of the farm chores and played football and frisbee. A quick bite of breakfast again made by us was followed by group photos and it was time to say goodbye but with an urge to come back again. We not only had a unique experience of spending a night in a farm and community living, we left being inspired by Shivam & Kishore. Their vision, risk taking appetite, boundless energy and humble nature inspired us to think beyond our routine day to day lives. By all means this weekend was an escape in its true sense.

Secrets Told in the Slow-Cart Kingdom
consider this an apology for not finishing Goretober, some things came up that made it hard to work. Happy Halloween!
Word Count: 2k
----------------------------
“Have the statues been taken care of?” Sun Wukong whispered, a sly grin slowly inching its way onto his face. One of his feet impatiently taps on the stone beneath him while his tail swings side to side, ‘they are going to enjoy this!’ he thought.
“Yes, down the deepest river I could find!” Zhu Bajie replied with a huff “I don’t see why you had to wake us up in the middle of the night simply to get rid of some stupid Daoist statues!” his voice raises before quickly being shushed by Wukong
Quietly agreeing, Sha Wujing nodded.  “It is a bit odd for you to call something like this…’ fun’...” covering a yawn with his hand as he awaits the monkey's response. An annoyed sigh leaves Wukong and he motions his companions to follow him inside the Daoist temple, the smell of cooked food, fruits, wines, and tea filling the air as the trio make their way to the main hall. Bajie’s ears wiggled and his stomach rumbled at the intoxicating aromas, Wujing gave a soft smile at realising what this was really for.
Entering the main hall, the monkey stops. All around him are intricately carved pillars, paintings on the walls that depicted three godlike entities, incense burners, all the things Wukong should look at with familiarity, but he kept his eye forward. He only spared them a single glance
“I hope you remember what those statues looked like because we are going to need to look like them for us to stay safe” Wukong swung around, looking at his friends with a smile and a gleam in his eyes that read of pure joy with a hint of mischief  “Go on, we can’t let anyone know we were here.” and with that, they turned into nigh identical copies of the original statues…well, most of them were identical.
“Stupid monkey! Telling us we need to remember when you clearly have the worst memory out of all of us!” Bajie started “If it wasn't for master’s kindness, we’d have-”
“Enough, Brother Pigsy. We must stay quiet, remember?” Wujing said sternly. “Brother Monkey, I believed that your statue had a longer beard, as well as a shorter nose and pudgier physique”. Despite his mild frustration at Bajie’s remark, Wukong shifted his form to fit the description given.
“Better?” He grumbles out.
“Better.”  Wujing and Bajie said in unison.
“Good” Wukong replies “Now, Pig, you must sit on the left and Sandy sits in the middle. I will sit on the right” instructed to take their places, they do as they are told.
Pigsy’s attention immediately returns to the food and drinks in front of him, marinated bear, warm buffalo milk, red bean buns, an assortment of steamed vegetables and fruits as well as fresh ones, jellyfish spiced with Sichuan pepper, cardamom, and ginger, sweet wines and peach tea…his mouth was a waterfall. He spent much time analyzing the food in front of him, so much so he didn’t even notice his friends were already eating, but when he did he dug in without hesitation.
“Absolutely divine!” Bajie whisper-yelled, his face stuffed to the brim “What would we do without you, Monkey Bro!”
“Die.” Wukong said bluntly, eating a random fruit he grabbed.
“WHA- we would be just fine without you, SIMIAN!!”
“Quiet, Swine! One would think that with those big ears of yours, you could listen when we tell you to. Be. Quiet.” Wukong shot a glare at Bajie, his gaze seemed to go past the Pig, despite looking straight at him.
Sandy chuckled, spilling a small amount of tea on his lap. Back-and-forth bickering between Wukong and Pigsy was something he’d gotten used to on this journey, and came to enjoy it well enough. Though slightly upset by the tea spill, he simply poured more into his cup and began to drink once more. He wasn’t the type of person to be hungry after waking up, so this would suffice for now.
So the trio continued to eat without a word, Pigsy gorging himself on all he could grab, Sandy satisfied with his drink, and Monkey slowly grabbing fruits now and then. Bajie broke the silence with bewilderment
“This beef is just heavenly! It's sweet and tender, seasoned perfectly with most of the juice retained! It almost of tasted like-”
“Human meat?” Monkey interrupted, looking for what to eat next.
“Why- yes in fact-” Pigsy stuttered
“Have you eaten humans, Brother Monkey?” Sandy asked, his tone serious, eyebrows furrowed.
“Of course I have! But that's nothing- hey, can you pass me that….uh ....” Wukong squinted his eyes, “...that…. weird smelling…peach-thing?”
‘Do you mean the mandarin? But about the human thing-”.
“Yes! The mandarin! Hand it over will ya?” cutting Sandy off and not really willing to get into his past, Monkey beckons his hand for one of the citruses. Wujing hands the fruit over, he’ll let this pass for now, but it will be followed up eventually. They continued in silence once more, it was clear that something was in the air, but still, as silent as ever… until Bajie filled the silence once more.
“Monkey, Why didn’t you just say ‘mandarin’ in the first place? Have you honestly never seen a mandarin in your whole life? I find that hard to believe”.
Wukong paused for a second…he could lie about this, or simply ignore the pig…
“Well? What is it?” Pigsy insisted.
“...I couldn’t see it” the open and honest truth.
Sandy chimed in “couldn’t see it? Brother Wukong, you are a very observant man…how could you just…not see it? The bowl is only a couple of feet away!” He turned his head to face the monkey, attempting to stay as quiet as possible. “You just…couldn’t see it?”
“Yes. I couldn’t see it… it just looked…blurry- or foggy-… I don’t quite know” sighing as he peeled his fruit, avoiding eye contact. “Everything is like that, blurry. A mess of colour swatches that make up only vague shapes” Wukong lowered his voice more, as if ashamed
Both Pigsy and Sandy paused at what they were hearing… Did Sun Wukong, The Monkey King, Great Sage Equal to Heaven, just admit he has bad eyesight? It seemed like something that would never affect him, and yet here it is. All of a sudden, things start to make sense, the statue, his aversion to reading, he simply couldn’t see properly. But that doesn’t explain other things…
“Wait, if you can't see…then how can you tell demons from humans?” Pigsy asked curiously.
“Simple, it's magic. My Golden Eyes of Truth allow me to see something's true form. It's the only way I really can see clearly…especially master, he’s just a ray of gold and cicadas…it genuinely burns my eyes” Wukong chuckles a bit at the end, couple his blindness with light sensitivity? A match made in hell.
“When did your eyesight start to degrade?” Wujing leaned in closer, wanting to know more.
“Wow, rude.” Wukong started “First, it did not degrade naturally. Second, and I'm surprised you both forgot, when I got arrested by heaven they took away my amour and threw me in the Eight Trigrams Furnace, all that smoke and heat had an impact on me. At first, I thought it simply was…fog that blurred my vision, but when I burst out I was too angry to notice how little I couldn’t see. A literal blind rage, if you will”
Of course, how could they forget? How could anyone forget? It was the biggest event to occur in heaven in a very long time. The pure bloodlust and unbridled rage that came from the monkey was a truly traumatizing sight. His scleras stained red as if drenched in blood, the iris yellow like pure gold, pupils narrowed and catlike. The stone monkey was on fire and smoke burst from his mouth…anyone who saw his rampage was left with a myriad of psychological scars. Heaven was left as rubble and ashes held together by the blood of countless immortals and warriors. Each corner and crevasse was like a painted masterpiece, left soiled by the thick red ink.
“...Can you draw us?” Sandy asked, ripping everyone’s minds away from those dreadful memories and placing their attention on him.
“I- What?” The monkey sputtered “I just told you I can’t see proper-”
“Yes, Brother Monkey, I know. But I'm curious as to how you see us right now, without your gold vision. How do you think we currently appear as mortals? As we are on our journey right now” Sandy paused “Paint us”
“Be sure to make me as handsome as possible” Pigsy chimed in.
‘I suppose it could be interesting’ thought Wukong “there really is no time like the present” he closed his eyes and plucked 3 hairs from his neck, turning them into a brush, ink and a piece of paper, he began to work. Trying to see properly, Monkey got as close as he could without smudging anything. Stroke after stroke he worked the brush like a weapon, his two companions silently watching, taking in how much he was trying. Wukong will admit, he’s no artist, he’s a fighter and a crafty one at that. He takes joy in listening to poetry, maybe getting someone to write his own poems and songs down but he simply cannot do it on his own. Despite that, he’ll try, simply because he can.
Just as Wukong’s art is finished, the trio hears footsteps coming into the hall and they all scurry into their popper positions. They see three figures, there is no doubt that it's the Three Daoist Immortals. Needless to say that now is when they get to have some mischievous fun.
—-----------------------------------
Having left the Slow-Cart Kingdom, the pilgrims continue to journey westward. Memories of their primate companion disembowelling and decapitating himself were still fresh in the minds of each of them, the only difference being that Wukong himself was the only one to view it positively.
Tripitaka decides to send Bajie off to find some food for the group, such ordeals with demons can still leave a person quite hungry. Even with the disgusting events that had occurred, nature dictates that people, especially humans, need to eat. Wukong simply doesn’t trust the pig to do his job properly, so he opts to leave and spy on him. Wujing, Tripitaka, and Ao Lie are left alone with each other
“Master, would you like to see something?” Sandy gave a curious look to the young monk, a warm smile on his face.
“Hm? I suppose that depends on what it is, Wujing” Tripitaka said cautiously, not wanting to be subjected to the sight of more gore.
“Do not worry Master, Brother Monkey made it”  taking a piece of folded paper out from one of the bags he was holding “You are aware of Brother Monkey’s impaired eyes, yes?”
“Of course, Bajie informed me earlier…” Tripitaka trailed off as his disciple handed him the folded paper. Opening it he finds four simple paintings of…what seemed to be their group. The first seemed to be of Ao Lie, a simple dragon-like squiggle, next to it was some very childish and messy handwriting simply spelling out the dragon-horses name. The second was of Bajie, Wukong quite obviously didn’t put much effort into his one, so there is less detail, excluding the stink lines emanating off of the pigman with crudely written insults popped off to the side. The third is Wujing, more respect is placed in this painting, and his features are more defined with cleaner lines and a modest face…there is also a silly painting of him where he simply has a fish for a head. Finally, there was Tripitaka himself, still crude yet genuine passion was put into his depiction. Painted as a heavenly figure who has come to help Wukong become who he was meant to be. There is no doubt that the loyalty Wukong feels for his master is genuine.
Tripitaka sighs, a small smile creeps on his face “Wukong is a kind soul, despite his destructive methods, he is a good person. Don’t tell him I said this, but I believe when he reaches Nirvana, he will truly become what he was always meant to be…..” his voice trails off again

The Journey of Milk: From S.V. Dairy Farm to Tirumala Temple
Tirumala, nestled in the hills of Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its sacred temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, attracting millions of devotees each year. One of the key elements of the spiritual experience is the offerings made to the deity, with milk playing a significant role. This blog takes you on a journey that traces the path of milk from S.V. Dairy Farm to the hallowed halls of the Tirumala Temple.
S.V. Dairy Farm: A Pillar of Quality
Established by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), S.V. Dairy Farm is a testament to quality and sustainability. Located near Tirupati, the farm is dedicated to producing fresh, pure milk that meets the highest health standards. With a commitment to hygiene and animal welfare, the dairy farm employs modern techniques to ensure the milk’s quality, making it a crucial resource for temple offerings.
The Milking Process
The journey begins at the dairy farm, where highly trained staff care for the cows and buffaloes. Each animal is selected for its health and milk yield. The milking process is performed with utmost care to ensure cleanliness and to maintain the integrity of the milk. The milk is immediately collected, cooled, and tested for quality, ensuring that only the best makes it to the next stage of the journey.
Processing and Packaging
Once the milk is collected, it undergoes rigorous quality checks and pasteurization to eliminate any harmful bacteria while preserving its nutritional value. The processing facility at S.V. Dairy Farm is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, allowing for efficient and hygienic handling of the milk. After pasteurization, the milk is packaged, ready to be transported.
Transporting to Tirumala
The journey continues as the packaged milk is transported to the Tirumala Temple. Special care is taken during this phase to ensure that the milk remains fresh and uncontaminated. Given the temple's altitude and the influx of devotees, timely delivery is crucial to maintain the quality of the offerings.
Rituals and Offerings
Upon arrival at the temple, the milk is used in various rituals and offerings. It holds great significance in Hindu traditions and is often offered to the deity as a symbol of purity and devotion. The milk is used to prepare prasad (sacred food) that is later distributed among devotees, making the cycle complete. The act of offering milk symbolizes devotion and gratitude, enhancing the spiritual experience of the pilgrims.
Community Impact
S.V. Dairy Farm not only provides quality milk for the temple but also plays a vital role in the local community. By sourcing milk from local farmers and providing them with fair prices, the farm supports agricultural livelihoods and promotes sustainable practices. This initiative contributes to the local economy and reinforces the cultural significance of the temple and its offerings.
Conclusion
The journey of milk from S.V. Dairy Farm to Tirumala Temple is not just a logistical process; it is a spiritual pathway that connects the devotion of millions to the divine. Through quality, care, and community support, S.V. Dairy Farm ensures that each drop of milk embodies purity and devotion, making every offering at the Tirumala Temple a truly sacred experience. Whether you are a devotee or a visitor, understanding this journey adds depth to your experience, reminding us of the intricate connections between nature, community, and spirituality.

Timeless Culinary Secrets: Elevating Flavors with Traditional Oils
In the world of cooking, the right ingredients can transform a dish from ordinary to extraordinary. Among the many secrets of culinary excellence, the use of traditional oils like buffalo desi ghee and mustard oil cold pressed stands out as a time-honored method to enhance flavor, texture, and nutritional value. These oils, deeply rooted in Indian cooking traditions, are not just ingredients; they are the essence of what makes many dishes memorable. Let’s explore how these timeless oils can elevate your culinary creations and bring a taste of authenticity to your kitchen.
The Richness of Buffalo Desi Ghee
What is Buffalo Desi Ghee?
Buffalo desi ghee is a form of clarified butter made from the milk of water buffaloes. Unlike regular cow ghee, buffalo ghee has a richer, creamier texture and a stronger, more robust flavor. The process of making buffalo desi ghee involves simmering butter until the water evaporates and the milk solids are removed, leaving behind pure, golden butterfat that is packed with nutrients.
Health Benefits of Buffalo Desi Ghee
Buffalo desi ghee is more than just a cooking medium; it is a nutritional powerhouse with numerous health benefits:
High in Healthy Fats: Buffalo desi ghee contains higher levels of fat than cow ghee, making it an excellent source of energy. The fats in ghee are also essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Promotes Digestive Health: The butyric acid present in buffalo desi ghee supports gut health by nourishing the cells of the colon and reducing inflammation.
Enhances Immunity: Rich in antioxidants, buffalo desi ghee helps in strengthening the immune system, making it a valuable addition to any diet.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Ghee has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries due to its ability to reduce inflammation and promote overall well-being.
Culinary Uses of Buffalo Desi Ghee
Buffalo desi ghee’s rich and creamy flavor makes it an incredibly versatile ingredient in the kitchen. Its high smoke point makes it ideal for frying, sautéing, and roasting, ensuring that it doesn’t break down into harmful compounds at high temperatures. It can also be used as a spread on toast, a drizzle over hot vegetables, or even as a finishing touch in dal and curries, adding depth and richness to your dishes.
The Authenticity of Mustard Oil Cold Pressed
What is Mustard Oil Cold Pressed?
Mustard oil cold pressed is extracted from mustard seeds through a traditional process that involves pressing the seeds at low temperatures. This method preserves the natural flavor, aroma, and nutritional properties of the mustard seeds, making the oil a superior choice compared to refined oils. Mustard oil cold pressed is particularly popular in regions like Bengal, Punjab, and Rajasthan, where it is a staple in everyday cooking.
Health Benefits of Mustard Oil Cold Pressed

This guide will help you understand what to look for and how to make the best choice when purchasing buffalo milk.
1. Why Choose Buffalo Milk?
Before diving into the purchasing process, it's important to understand why buffalo milk might be a great addition to your diet. Here are some key benefits:
Nutrient-Rich: Higher in calcium, protein, and healthy fats compared to cow’s milk.
Lower Cholesterol: Contains less cholesterol, making it heart-friendly.
Immune Boosting: Rich in immunoglobulins and lactoferrin.
Digestive Health: Easier to digest for some people who are lactose intolerant.
2. Where to Buy Buffalo Milk
Buffalo milk is available at various places, depending on your location and access:
Local Farms: If you live near dairy farms, check if any specialize in buffalo milk. Buying directly from a farm ensures freshness and supports local agriculture.
Farmer’s Markets: Many farmers’ markets feature local dairy producers who sell buffalo milk.
Health Food Stores: Specialty stores often stock buffalo milk, along with other unique and health-focused food products.
Online Retailers: Numerous online platforms offer buffalo milk for delivery, often from reputable farms.
3. What to Look For
When purchasing buffalo milk, consider the following factors to ensure you're getting the best quality:
Freshness: Always check the expiration date. Fresh milk will taste better and retain more nutrients.
Source: Look for milk from well-managed farms with good animal welfare standards. Organic and grass-fed options are usually higher in quality.
Packaging: Opt for milk in glass bottles or BPA-free containers to avoid potential contaminants from plastic.
Certification: Check for organic certification or other quality assurances that indicate the milk meets certain standards.
4. Types of Buffalo Milk Products
Buffalo milk is available in various forms:
Raw Milk: Unpasteurized milk, which some people prefer for its natural enzymes and probiotics. However, ensure it's from a reputable source to avoid health risks.
Pasteurized Milk: Heated to kill harmful bacteria, making it safer for consumption.
UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) Milk: Treated at very high temperatures for a longer shelf life, though it may have a slightly altered taste.
5. Understanding Labels
When buying buffalo milk, it's important to read labels carefully:
Fat Content: Buffalo milk is naturally higher in fat, but you can find skimmed or partially skimmed versions if you prefer lower fat content.
Ingredients: Pure buffalo milk should have no added ingredients. Avoid products with added sugars or preservatives.
Nutritional Information: Check the nutritional panel to understand the content of protein, calcium, and other nutrients.
6. Storing Buffalo Milk
Proper storage is crucial to maintain the quality of buffalo milk:
Refrigeration: Always keep buffalo milk refrigerated. Consume it within a few days of opening.
Freezing: If you buy in bulk, buffalo milk can be frozen. However, it’s best to use it within 3-6 months for optimal taste and quality.
Avoid Cross-Contamination: Use clean containers and utensils to avoid contaminating the milk.
7. Price Considerations
Buffalo milk is generally more expensive than cow's milk due to its richer nutritional profile and the costs associated with raising buffalo. However, the health benefits can justify the higher price. Look for deals at local markets or consider buying in bulk to save money.
8. Supporting Ethical Practices
When buying buffalo milk, consider the ethical aspects:
Animal Welfare: Choose products from farms that ensure the humane treatment of buffalo.
Sustainable Farming: Support farms that practice sustainable agriculture, reducing environmental impact.
Conclusion
Buffalo milk is a delicious and nutritious alternative to cow’s milk, offering numerous health benefits. By understanding where to buy, what to look for, and how to properly store buffalo milk, you can make an informed decision and enjoy this fantastic dairy product. Whether you’re purchasing it for its health benefits or its unique taste, high-quality buffalo milk can be a valuable addition to your diet.
