I think the commercialization of alternative fashion and watering down of subcultures is so sad.
No, you don't need doc martens or tripp or London fog to be "legitimate" these pieces can be really cool looking but imo are best tret as inspiration.
No you aren't too poor to dress alternative I'm sorry you were made to believe that. These communities were built by the outcasted and impoverished. Any clothes can fit the subculture. Its about intent, wearing what you like. Following the morals and ideals associated with the subculture. Being passionate about the art, design themes and/or history. Imo the floral bedsheets turned dress are far more in line with these subcultures than the extremely expensive designer brand name dark and studded clothes.
Diy, modify, innovate, don't be afraid to have something turn out bad. Don't let anyone enforce their weird standards on you while participating in a movement meant to be a place for those rejecting standards placed upon them. Don't fall victim to consumerism, or attitudes designed to make communities rip themselves apart.
*if this is phrased weird or overly rambly, I'm not the most awake rn tbh

yooo please may I have some punk music recs!! I'm very new to the genre but I'd love to listen to more!!!!
what I like (not specifically punk bands but I like their sound): Radiohead (my favourite band ever), nirvana, the cure, dream nails, crass, currls (they're so underrated), UK waste, a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees, the smiths, deftones, T.S.O.L, Fleetwood Mac, zounds
I want to find more punk music I like (fan of crass, t.s.o.l and dream nails) but I don't really enjoy music that's super heavy and screams a lot - a couple here and there absolutely!!! go for it!!!! but if it's just nonstop Noise it's not really my thing. so if you know any bands with music like this I'd love to give them a listen!! if you're in doubt, just give it to me anyway I'm open to having my mind changed!!!!
please DM me or leave a note with your music recommendations!! :D
thank you so much!!!

hey queer nd teen here i've been really interested in punk culture and the message drives me to tears but i'm scared of being called a poser because i feel like a coward
i hate cops and i think they should fucking die and the government is fucked and we have to look after each other. but i feel backed into a corner because i'm surrounded by family who would laugh at me and just wouldn't understand and i don't feel like i can Handle it but i Want to
as a shy and nonconfrontational teen with a shit ton of anxiety to boot i dunno. i admire brave hardcore punks who beat up cops and nazis but i Can't Be That
no need for a response but it would be nice
When I was a teen, I was told by my best friend that I could never be a punk. That I would never be a punk. But here I am. I was a shy quiet kid, and I’m still pretty quiet and prefer to avoid confrontations when I can. My point is, these things don’t prevent people from being a punk if its in their nature
Not all punks are the big tough punks who can physically fight those fights. Though they are a very important part of our community. But we also have plenty of disabled, neurodivergent, and chronically ill people who are just as punk, and even people who are just not into violence. They are advocates, they are researchers, they are community care takers. Being a punk isnt all about fighting evil. I actually think thats not the best way to look at it at all. Being punk is about caring for your community. And while ‘fighting evil’ is a part of it, there are a lot more things that entails.
If you truly want to be a punk, it seems like you are already going down the right path. You alluded to a not so great home life where it might not be the best idea to dress in alternative styles. You could always start with smaller, more subtle things. Or you can just wait until you can move out to start exploring that. Remember, being punk is more than just an aesthetic, and while the aesthetic may look cool, it is by no means a requirement to be a punk (honestly half the time I run around it cowboy boots and a flannel - in the winter I usually add the hat too)
You are a teen still. Growing and learning about yourself and the world around you. And so are your peers. Any teen who calls you a poser is being a jerk and doesn’t know all that much about the scene. Any grown adult that calls you a poser is probably a poser themselves who refuses to acknowledge that not every person comes from the same background. But I also feel like it’s important to tell you that what anyone else says shouldnt matter that much. Even if it feels like it does, if you let their words matter to you, you are giving them all the control.
Its okay to be young and not know a lot. Its okay to not dress alternative for any number of reasons. Its okay to not feel like you could go off and fight bad people. None of those things make you a poser.

Can we talk more about the transitional phase between normie and alternative? Because we all did some corny shiz back then. Very poser behavior. And I think we all need to talk about it. Cleanse our souls.
I feel like the "I call myself emo but I don't even understand what that means" starter pack is a tattoo choker, a pair of black plain cross earrings and a band tee for a wildly popular rock band that isn't even really emo like AC/DC or Misfits or something. Or that Nirvana t-shirt, you know the one I'm talking about. If I see that shirt one more time, I'm gonna puke.
It's like you looked around Walmart for anything at all black so you could fit in with the edgy kids at school. It's like those "emo transformation" TikToks but... but this isn't a game to you, this is normal Tuesday behavior. Who is three or four years deep into alt culture and still wearing this outfit? Cuz I wore this outfit when I was probably thirteen... for about a year... never again. Also had a leather jacket that you could not peel off my body. I ran that thing into the ground.
Don't even get me started on how we all labeled everything "emo" that clearly was not- especially music. Who was gonna tell us emo was not a synonym for edgy and sad?
Anyways, I ended up donating those cross earrings to a nearby blossoming baby bat and burned the tattoo chokers a LOOONG time ago. They no longer have power over me. I'm a free woman.
Got any funny baby bat/puppy punk/poser days stories or thoughts? I need this.

back to this weeks episode of ghost's queer rage: women and nonbinary only"inclusive" safe spaces, sports, and other anti masculinity politically correct queer spaces
so, my men of the jury, i would like to open this and say that I am in fact the perfect image of the perfect miss universe afab queer person, I'm quiet, but just proud enough to say I'm open, I mostly like women, but if be open for others, I may be genderfluid but I'm "normal" I'm fem enough presenting, I'm fucking perfect arent i.
where do i fucking start this.
should i start with the absoloute bullshit that are inclusive sport leagues? so I play roller derby, and the closest league to me is an "inclusive" women/enby league. yet its mostly cis women and I have yet to see a single amab person play or be seen on track outside low level training. i play with the junior league, and that league is mixed, because its juniors, but there do the guys go when the age out? fuck if they know.
this club preaches about being inclusive and an open safe place for queer spaters, and yet they're one of two leagues that I know that have women/enby only teams
the fact that theyre women and enby only, means they also don't take all enby people, they only take the perfect enbys, the right queers
i know im yelling at a wall about this because I am their idea of the perfect socially acceptable queer. but what the ACTUAL FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT ANYMORE
THERE ARE NO TRUELY INCLUSIVE QUEER SPACES ANYMORE
BECAUSE THE VERY SLIGHT *HINT* OF MASCULINITY (be that amab people, ftm people, masc women, masc enby people, etc)IS AN IMMEDIATE RED FLAG TO THEM BECAUSE OH GODS THE HORROR MEN = BED
YOU HAVE TO BE THE RIGHT KIND OF QUEER TO EXIST IN AN "INCLUSIVE" SPACE, OR TO CALL YOURSELF QUEER AT ALL ANYMORE, BECAUSE EVEN THE WORD QUEER HAS BECOME THE CUTESY HAPPY PRIDE PC TERM, BECAUSE THE SECOND YOU SEE YOURSELF AS ANYTHING BUT THE PERFECT FAG, ITS OUTCAST UNCLEAN, KILL YOURSELF, FUCK YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR COW YOU ARENT WORTH ANYTHING DIRTY FAG
so can i get a highfive for being the worlds okayest fags?

Went to my first hardcore show last night. It was all ages and the pit got pretty aggressive. But it was also the safest I’ve ever felt. Like wrestling my brothers but the didn’t want to hurt me at all. And every time my group took a bigger hit 3-5 big guys appeared in front of us for a bit.
I do believe I was assigned babygirl at show

wait hold up i’ve never heard of the term puppy punk before that’s so cute
I really like the term puppy punk! I understand why some people prefer baby punk, but I think puppy makes sense if you view it like this:
A punk is kinda like a guard dog, we protect ourselves, our beliefs, and our community. Sometimes we can be vicious if any of those are threatened, other times we are super caring and very loyal
A puppy punk is new to punk, they dont know everything yet. They might not have the skills to protect themselves and their beliefs. They may not have the knowledge to know how to take care of their community. They are just a little puppy right now, but eventually they will grow into a guard dog in their own right
So. Yeah. Thats why I like the term puppy punk. Also it just kinda makes us a little more unique to have our own term instead of just another ‘baby xyz’. And its less infantilizing for adults who are new to punk as well if they want to use a label while they feel like they are still learning things. That might just be my opinion though. I’m sure theres some significance to how the term puppy punk came about that I’m just not aware of, but I like it nonetheless 😄
