i rly just want to be a good dog, but there are all these human things i don't understand and human expectations of me.

i want to feel like i'm more than a reflection of others

i want to be a person, in my own way. i want "me" to actually define something

it feels like i dont contribute anything except sharing stuff from elsewhere. I only create a single thing and that's writing that nobody reads. idk how to interact anymore and it feels scary and isolated and i just don't want to feel like this.

atsumu is always alllll over you.

he’ll always have an arm draped over your shoulder or a hand around your waist

he’s not much of a texter, as he’d much prefer to see you in person, he’ll text you constant “i miss you’s” though.

super duper affectionate, especially when he’s tired.

in public, he’s always right behind you, checking for any danger.

sometimes, hes almost too much. you can count on both hands how many times you had to call him off of a poor stranger who happened to be looking in your direction.

he hates when people make noise when he’s doing a killer serve, but you’re the only one he tolerates. when he hears an “i love you, tsumu!” from a familiar voice in the crowd, he concentration is almost doubled.

most of the school knows to be quiet, so when people in the crowd are angry with you, he shoots them a sharp glare.

after games, he searches for you in the stands and blows a cocky kiss, an act you’ve grown to love.

overall, you’re atsumu’s pride and joy, his number one supporter.

TETSURO KUROO . . .

tetsuro is less clingy than most, but when he’s had an especially bad day, he’s constantly on you.

he’s wrapped around you back or leaning his head on your shoulder, and when you two are cuddling, he’s usually on top, covering you like a weighted blanket.

his texts are short and sweet, something like “have a good day ❤️” or “thinking about you!”

not to mention, you’re cool with all of his friends, which he loves. that doesn’t mean he doesn’t get jealous, though.

when you’re talking to kenma a tad too much about his video game, or when lev seems a bit too excited to tell you his progress in volleyball, he sends a killer glare their way.

not that it scares anyone, though. in reality, he’s really just making a stupid face.

kuroo is amazing to you, too. he’s the type of guy to buy you something even if you briefly mention it.

“hey, remember that xyz you said was cute a while back? i got it for you, just because.”

expect random dinner dates, too! fanciness ranges from super ultra mega fancy, to cafe down the street fancy.

kuroo is also big on hand kisses!! when he greets you, when he’s leaving, throughout the day. he just loves the romantic energy of it. grabbing your hand oh so tenderly to plant a soft kiss on it. bonus points if someone’s watching.

KOTARO BOKUTO . . .

with bokuto’s loud personality, comes his loud love for you.

every time he score’s a point in his games, he says “That’s for Y/N!!”

akaashi is starting to get tired of it…

when he loses his games, he’s so upset. he immediately runs to you for support. He puts his full weight on you, leaning against you as you rub his back.

like a puppy, bokuto is at your heel with a big happy smile plastered on his face

he texts you constantly, always informing you of new drama within the team or just random updates about his day. he often includes pictures! his favorite ones are the 0.5’s he takes of akaashi.

he looves when you send pictures back! he makes them widgets on his phone, and when he takes pictures of you, he puts them as his lockscreen and/or homescreen

he has a picture of you sleeping that you think is…rather unflattering. but he always says its his favorite picture and that you look so peaceful!!

along with the pictures he takes, he posts you all the time! he has a “daily y/n post” as he calls it.

RYUNOSUKE TANAKA . . .

oh boy, where do we even begin??

tanaka is the loudest of the bunch.

he’s always huffing and puffing when he’s not near you. when he is, he’s all smiles.

he treats you like a god/goddess. like he LITERALLY worships you.

hes loves to show off, but when you’re around, it’s a million times worse (or better? who’s to say?)

he takes his shirt off and swings it around way more when you’re around LMAOO

like atsumu, he’s constantly looking out for creeps and weirdos, or even fans. even when you reassure him you don’t have fans, he doesn’t understand.

“no, i refuse to believe you don’t have a group of fans. look at you! you’re amazing!”

he absolutely loves to show you off, you give him a sort of confidence boost. he’s so proud to have you at his side, and he makes that known.

when you’re cheering him on from the stands, his gameplay goes from 100% to 150%. before you, he was always talking about how awesome it would be to have a hottie cheering for him and how it would make him much better of a player, and he was right!

”Are you nervous?”

You don’t answer, instead you subtly do breathing exercises while staring at the white wall ahead of you.

Rose sighs but chooses to fix a small flaw in your hair instead of pushing for an answer.

Of course, you were nervous, you were at the KMA’s. Your group was up for four different awards, including Musician of the Year.

The funniest thing about being up for arguably the most important award of the night was your soulmates were up for the same award.

The “pregnancy scare” that happened a few days ago left you feeling a little overwhelmed. You hadn’t been ignoring your soulmates, but you’d be lying if you said you were jumping at any opportunity to talk to them.

You made sure to keep them in the loop about the doctor’s appointment you scheduled two days after the initial scare, and you could feel the relief they felt through your symbol when you confirmed what the at-home tests already told you.

They understood why you needed a bit of extra time to think, but they missed you terribly.

Chan would try his best to catch you at the company, and when he did, he bought you food every time. You thanked him with a few kisses and a tight hug each time, so he started to believe you weren’t angry at them.

Rather, you were just…tired.

Your career, the trauma stemming from your mom, the way Eunji was still very passive-aggressive towards you. So much was happening at once, and you were just ready to rest.

Truth was, after the award show, you were set to leave and go straight home. You had a flight to Jeju the next morning, and you were excited to have some time to relax.

Your nervousness carried for the rest of the night. From taking your seats in the audience to interacting with other idols. It spiked when you realized eight pairs of eyes were a few rows in front of you, taking advantage of the fact that a group they were close friends with sat next to yours.

They took turns looking back, pretending to joke and laugh with their friends but staring at you with what you’d call “puppy dog eyes.”

Seungmin was the best at it, of course, always lingering a little longer when it was his turn to stare.

You smiled each time they looked at you, so they knew you weren’t upset. You loved them, and that little spat wasn’t a make or break in your relationship.

Soon it was your turn to perform, and your anxiety was replaced with excitement and adrenaline for a few minutes while you and your girls destroyed the stage.

You could barely enjoy the standing ovation you received when that familiar feeling crept back into your stomach.

You were on autopilot for the rest of the night, only coming out for a while when your soulmates took their turn on stage. You weren’t shy to admit you were even louder than the fans that were there.

Soon after their performance, it was time for the grand prize winner to be announced.

Your group managed to snag an earlier award which you were extremely grateful for, but this one was the most important.

Again, nervousness.

The murmurs of the crowd sounded like static in your ears. You watched the presenter, nonblinking, as the world around you slowed down.

You watched her mouth move

“And the award goes to…”

She revealed who won. But you didn’t hear her. The feeling that shot through you, starting at your palm and ending at your feet, made you gasp.

You thought your soulmates had won, that was why you felt such strong emotion despite you actively blocking the bond.

But no, it was your group’s picture up on the screen. All of a sudden, you felt hands shaking your shoulders and screams all around you.

Your palm was burning, so you quickly checked it to make sure the ointment wasn’t coming off.

Your older group mates grabbed you and dragged you to the stage with them. As Dae gave a tearful speech, you looked out into the audience, seeking a specific group of people.

They were all standing, giving you looks of pure pride and happiness. Your anxiety vanished, quickly, as if it were never there to begin with.

That moment was when you started to think about your future with them, and that moment was when you started to get excited about the future.

Wanda is the same person when she transformed but Yn doesn't. Yn is quieter but wanted to play a lot and trust them when they transformed and very protective, always around Nat and Wanda, Thor, Yelena and Kate. They liked when she is a werewolf because she doesn't care too much about anything. She bites a bit, but always playfully and gives them something to play.

NO ONE'S POV "Wands, I don't know" Y/N sighs, flopping down on the couch next to her girlfriend.

Wanda and Y/N have known each other since childhood. The two have been through everything together… Y/N's parents death, Wanda's parents death, then Pietro's death and even their first ever transformation into wolves.

Yes, Wanda and Y/N are werewolves. The girls were scared at first and had no idea what to do. After all, they were only 16 when it happened for the first time.

They learned how to control it over the years though and now their favorite thing to do is running around the forest in the middle of the night.

"I know it's scary. We've always had only each other and I really enjoy being only with you… But having some friends can't harm us. And we can help to save other people" Wanda says, holding her girlfriend's hands and hoping Y/N would agree. "We can always leave if we won't like it"

"… Fine" Y/N sighs, giving in. "But if we don't like it, promise me we'll just leave and live together in a little house in the forest like we've always wanted" Y/N says, looking Wanda in the eyes.

"I promise" Wanda smiles and leans in to peck her girlfriend's lips with a kiss. "Thank you"

And that's how the two ended up joining the Avengers. Y/N still isn't exactly happy about it, but Wanda is. And when Wanda's happy, Y/N feels happy too.

Y/N found her small group in the Avengers where she feels comfortable. Of course Wanda takes number one place, she's her loving girlfriend and Y/N loves her more than anything.

Then there are Yelena and Kate. Both absolutely love playing around with Y/N when she's in her wolf form. Plus the three are really good friends and somehow always get in some kind of trouble which drives Wanda and Natasha crazy.

That brings us to Natasha who would be another person Y/N feels comfortable with. The redhead still has nightmares from the Red Room and Y/N helps her with it just by being with her. The Black Widow seems tough, but there's nothing she loves more than when Y/N's in her wolf form, resting her head on the assassin's lap while she's running her fingers through the wolf's soft fur.

This group wouldn't be complete without Thor. He never resists the cute puppy eyes Y/N gives him and always shares some of his food with the wolf underneath the table. Wanda's always quite annoyed by it, but she knows damn well that she can't resists Y/N's cute puppy eyes either.

"Wandaaa, I'm booored. Come play with meee" Y/N whines, pulling her girlfriend out of their bed. She's been feeling super playful today, but Wanda's in the exact opposite mood.

"Y/N, I'm tired. You kept me up until like 4 am. I want to sleep" Wanda sighs. The girls spent the night in the forest again and went to bed really late.

Y/N groans, leaving the room and transforming into her wolf form. She feels more comfortable like that whenever she's upset.

The upset wolf makes her way over to Natasha who's currently filling up some mission reports in the living room.

Y/N walks over to the couch Natasha's sitting on, putting her head on the redhead's lap.

"Hi there, Y/N/N" Natasha smiles, running her fingers through Y/N fluffy fur. "What got you so upset?" She pouts, looking at how quiet her wolf friend currently is.

Y/N runs for the ball that she spotted in the living room before running back and placing it on the ground, nudging Natasha's leg with her head.

"Oh. You want to play" Natasha chuckles, Y/N waving her tail in response. Natasha picks up her phone, leaving Yelena a quick text. Natasha loves playing around with Y/N, but she really has a lot of mission reports to fill up. Knowing her sister, Yelena doesn't care about some papers, so she'll definitely have time to take Y/N on the garden.

"Y/N/N, come here! I heard someone wants to play!" Yelena calls from the door frame, squishing Y/N's favorite toy on which Y/N immediately runs up to the blonde, happy that someone will play with her.

Yelena takes Y/N out on the garden and runs around with her, throwing her branches they found on the garden and just playing. The pair is soon joined by Kate who saw them from the window and decided to join her two friends.

About two hours later, the three girls are laying on the grass, Y/N back in her human form and they just laugh about some silly things that come into their minds.

"I don't know how about you, but I'm pretty hungry and something's telling me Thor's just making himself some snack, so I'll go to check that up" Y/N says, standing up, Kate and Yelena following.

They walk back to the kitchen and as Y/N thought, Thor's sitting at a table, eating his big snack. She sneaks behind him, stealing one of his pop tarts and running away, ignoring Thor's calls. She knows he'd end up giving her some anyway as they're really good friends.

"Oh. Wow. Slow down" Wanda chuckles, spotting her girlfriend running towards her.

"Oh. Hi, Wands. Did you have a nice nap?" Y/N asks with a smile, hiding her pop tart behind her back.

"Yeah. What do you have there?" Wanda asks with a raised eyebrow, trying to look behind her girlfriend's back.

"Nothing" Y/N responds, moving around, so Wanda couldn't see anything.

"If it's nothing then why don't you just show me? Are you afraid you'd have to share food with me?" Wanda asks teasingly, raising her eyebrow again.

"Hm. No?"

"Yeah. Sure" Wanda smirks, slowly walking behind Y/N which makes the girl think she's free of this conversation.

Y/N isn't the only one in a playful mood now though. Wanda sneaks behind, ripping the pop tart out of Y/N's hand and running away. "Thanks, babe!"

"Hey! Get back here! That was mine!"

Would probably accidentally leave one of the kiddos on his back bc he’s got his hands full with the others, so they’re just hanging out behind him

The absolute best at pretend, he’s got stories and character roles all up his sleeves

Frank like to pretend that Howdy is turning into a butterfly, so he pretends he stays in a lil blanket cocoon and then emerges with these plastic butterfly wings on his back

Sometimes I think I played the first chunk of my life on easy mode. I always got away with everything, I had money in my pocket that I earned, even when shit was bad at school I always skated by.

I met Kenna, and we were joined at the hip. We got married, and we moved to New York. Even when money was tight, we always managed to make something work. I was happy, I think. Because I ignored how I felt inside, just suppressed it.

Things were good. I had a very well paying job, we finally had our own place, we werent just surviving, we were thriving and healing.

Then I got fired, and it feels like every day has been a struggle. I decided fuck it, time to do some personal growth, and I learned how to unmask. Imagine being so diligent, so efficient at masking, you have to unlearn how to do it. You have been so afraid of being your true self for so long, you don't even recognize yourself anymore.

Dont get me wrong, I love my partner and my friends with all my heart. They are true, genuine bright spots in my life. But everything outside of them is so dark. I hate how weak I've become, that the smallest thing puts me in bed for days. I feel sick all the time, I can't find motivation for anything but spending time with my friends.

And if I think someone is upset with me? Even over something small? Who needs sleep anyway? Every time I fuck up, the first place my head goes is: they're going to abandon you, just like every other person you cared about. You're going to be all alone, and no one will care. So get out ahead of it. Push them away first, go cold again. You don't need them, you got along fine on your own.

I hate myself for it. Because now, I fight back. I swallow my pride and I reach out. And it's never serious, they always tell me what the problem is, and we talk it out. But I'm such a whipped fucking puppy, I go through anxiety for hours or days before I work up the courage.

Prim, proper, well mannered that is all the things a future queen needs to be for the grimmlands…something gem absolutely appalls she’s not fit to rule a country heck half the time she just wants to stay in bed for a whole day reading manga or watching cartoons! But nooooo the Royal advisors aka the biggest pricks she’s known since childhood continue to try and turn her into the one thing she isn’t until one day it just breaks her. Now that wouldn’t be an issue normally but when your a wither hybrid who’s mainly ability is to cause death and decay around you at every corner by spreading wither rose bushes and vines you end up having the very messy situation of now there are a lot of injured people around her because said pricks pushed her over the edge.

She ran for weeks and weeks until she collapsed into the hermitcraft server where she was found by Pearl and Tango who took her to Pearls shack where gem woke up to being covered by Tilly and her many many puppies almost not going into panic attack until Tango calmed her down and asked for her name. And after some explaining to Xisuma why there’s a wither hybrid currently sleeping again Pearl’s dire wolf Tilly he made her a hermit because he’s dealt with idiots like that in the past and he knows they aren’t gonna let Gem go that easily so he asked Grian and False to get in contact with Joel and Scott to let them know if somebody from the grimmlands try and come to hermitcraft

For the past few months Gem felt…safe which was a weird feeling since she never really had a proper chance to relax to begin with back home since one slip up meant she could kill a city’s worth of people with her roses but no! Turns out those royal advisors lord to her about the lethality of her roses! She felt so angry and tired and scared that she just wanted to curl into a ball and be left alone forever. Luckily Pearl sat down with her and told her whole Scarlet Pearl fiasco and how she got over it. Granted it involved a lot of murder but still! And Tango told her how he got over feeling betrayed by his family from banishing him from the nether.

Gem felt comforted in a way knowing she wasn’t the only one who was hurt in the past eventually she learned she wasn’t even the most dangerous person on the server. What in hell do you mean Cleo petrified an entire kingdom with a single state?! Wait Grian can do what with his wings?! Safe to say a lot of her fears were gone well…until the Royal advisors came to try and “catch the monster”…well unfortunately for them they now had a very angry Xisuma to deal with.

She does feel for her kingdom and her people, but she could never be the queen they wanted of her. Adventure is in her heart, and without the opportunity for that, she escapes through stories instead. She doesn't understand how anyone is supposed to always put on a strong façade. Day in, day out... If she thought too much about it she'd cry.

So, was it any surprise when she finally shattered under the stress and pressure of her role? The cracks had been appearing for a while. The hermits are always happy to remind her of this as well. She was always told to suppress her abilities instead of how to control and manage them, and that's not her fault.

Gem doesn't even hear about the hunt for her until it's already over. She's a little upset - she would've liked to give them a piece of her mind - but she knows Xisuma's right. It wouldn't help, it wouldn't give her the closure she's looking for. All it would do is make her angry. Prove the advisors right.

Pearl and Cleo spend the day with her once she's told, Tilly keeping them company. They braid flowers into each other's hair and they let Gem talk about her favourite books. It's not easy, but the twisted black vines are slowly crawling back down the walls, and Gem breathes a little lighter.

Weird to have a supportive family that triggers the fuck out of you. Dad asked me to get dinner, which he paid for, and we ate together. He gave me meat from the freezer.

I tried to help with the puppies, and he didn't like me messing with their routine, and I'm nervous about them resource guarding, and they still have puppy pads in the house because for some reason the rescue they're working with recommends this???

I don't remember the rescue's name, but one of the first things you learn in house training is that if you use pads AND try to get them to pee outside, it can confuse them. You keep them in a room with you, tether them to you, or keep them in a crate until they're potty trained.

They are not doing this.

Little Bit is still scared of the puppies, and it's not funny anymore. I really only thought it was funny the first time because I was able to control the situation and I was trying to keep her safe.

Mom thinks it's fine and that she should get used to them, and tried to bring her up close to the puppies more than once. This is NOT how you're supposed to do it.

They got upset that I put the puppies back in their pen so we could leave in peace. It's the perfect place for them to get used to each other, since they can see each other but can't get to each other, but God forbid I don't follow the schedule exactly.

My dog was shaking when we came in. I was holding her, and the puppies were at my feet. I don't think bringing her over there is worth the stress.

Dad didn't want puppies, mom did, and she's the one who agreed to foster. Mom is also flying a lot, so dad is left to take care of the puppies on his own for long periods of time.

Before all of this, mom invited me to an event so I could meet her friends' adult kids. I know that no one there is going to be masking, or even give a shit about covid.

Called grammy. She's sympathetic about my dog's health issues. She said she'd help. She also said that she doesn't believe in covid.

Dad sent me a promotional email for a job fair. It's in person and I'm sure it's another crowd that doesn't give a shit about masking. I don't even know if I'd be interested in any of the companies there. Maybe some of the remote roles.

I was going to talk about the budget and what's realistic, but dad was tired and sad so I just told him I'd made a little money this week. Someone tipped me $20. It's the most hope I've had in a while. It's also a drop in the bucket. It's a huge deal to me, but I'm going to have to do this about a thousand times over if I want to survive on my own.

I avoided mentioning what it was because I do not want my parents anywhere near my current writing in any way, shape, or form, so I have no idea what he thinks I might be doing. "I get paid per view and people can tip me." What does that sound like? I'm not gonna clarify.

When I see my family I usually stay up even later than usual because I can't deal with it, but I have a vet appointment tomorrow. I can't fuck around this time unless I cancel before 9am, and I don't think I should cancel. I'm stressed about the money.

You can’t you can’t you can’t. Jane’s going to kill them. Jane’s going to make you kill them.

“You’re alright. You can freak out for as long as you need to, and we’ll still be here. Unless that’s making things worse. Are we making things worse?”

Your throat burns and your ears ring. Have you been screaming? You’re being stabbed in the head over and over again. And being beaten with a sledgehammer.

“Should we let him claw himself like that?”

You notice you’ve been scratching your arm, at your brand. There’s blood under your nails.

“I… don’t know. Maybe just put something he can scratch over top of it?”

You think it’s a bit condescending for them to talk about you like you’re not here. You find you’re scratching something softer than your skin. Your arm burns. No, no, you can’t go through that again, can’t be branded again, please! You’re sorry, you’re sorry!

You killed someone. You killed someone and you didn’t have to, you still had more fight in you, you were just tired and scared and wanted water. And then you just didn’t think about it, ever.

You didn’t deserve to be rescued. It should’ve been Puppy or Kitty. You know they fought their very hardest, always. They’re not weak like you.

And all those people Jane killed, when you played the escape game… That was completely avoidable. You may as well have been the one to kill them, even if it was with Jane’s hands.

You smell peppermint and blood. You focus on the peppermint. Did Diya make you tea? That’s nice. Ey wouldn’t do that if ey knew you were just as bad as Jane.

“I don’t care what you’ve done, you’re nowhere near as bad as Jane.”

Someone is squeezing your hand rhythmically. Puppy…

It’s not Puppy. She’s not here. You left her and Kitty so you could be free. You chose yourself over them. They’d never do that to you.

Everything hurts. You’re a coward and a murderer and you don’t deserve to be happy.

“Ethan…”

You’re so tired. You haven’t been sleeping well, lately. You slump back into the couch, panting and worn out. Too tired to cry, too tired to be eaten alive by guilt.

Diya speaks carefully, as if any word might make you freak out again. Maybe ey’s right. “We know she made you do horrible things, that’s how we met. It’s not your fault. You did what you had to.”

You didn’t have to. You could’ve fought harder.

“Ethan, I’ve done horrible things, and none of it was because I was under the threat of torture. All I can do now, all we can do now, is move forward and try to do better. And you’re already doing better, because you were only ever doing those things because Jane made you. You don’t need to tear yourself apart. You did the best you could. Maybe you don’t believe it, but I do.”

“That just means my best is weak.” Your voice sounds awful.

“Then we’re all weak, because I’m sure we all would do the same stuff you did. None of it was your fault.”

“I was stupid to go with her.”

“So? She shouldn’t be kidnapping and torturing people. She’s the one in the wrong. Obviously.”

You sigh. “You’re going to get killed because of me. Did I ever tell you about when she slaughtered an entire hospital to punish me? She’ll do the same to you.”

“We knew the risks when we decided to save you.” There’s no doubt in Barron’s voice. “This is worth it.”

Tears stream down your face. “She made me eat their bodies…”

“I’m sorry that happened to you.” Greg says softly, hesitantly. They said a phrase that upsets them to comfort you… “It wasn’t your fault, and it doesn’t change how we feel about you.”

You can’t think of a way to argue with that. Maybe when you’re less tired… Oh, but you do not want to go to sleep, no way.

“Why don’t we just watch a movie or something?” Diya suggests. “Late at night is a horrible time to debate whether or not you’re a good person. Let’s just get you some rest, even if you can’t get back to sleep.”

You nod. “That sounds good.”

You’re in too much pain to do anything else, anyway.

Diya picks a movie and Barron gently asks to see your arm, and cleans and bandages the scratches. You’re dead asleep before it finishes.

“How’s my Puppy doing?”

Puppy doesn’t answer, of course.

“Do you want to go upstairs?”

Puppy nods, but barely. Every movement hurts.

“Alright.” Jane unlocks the cage she left Puppy in. “Things are going to be different, though. The shock collar will be set to shock you if you try to talk or hum or scream. And we’re only going to take the muzzle off for you to eat. Understand?”

Puppy nods. Jane grabs her hair and yanks her out of the cage. She fastens the collar around her neck.

“Kitty’s been missing you. Why don’t you go say hi?”

Puppy makes a show of trying to stand, despite knowing she won’t be able to. Then she crawls up the stairs.

Kitty isn’t waiting by the basement door, of course. Puppy knocks on the floor to get their attention.

Kitty cautiously enters the room to investigate the noise. Their eyes widen in horror when they see Puppy.

“Oh my god.”

Puppy must look pretty bad.

“This is my fault. I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. I’ll never do something like that again. I’m so sorry.”

Puppy doesn’t blame Kitty at all, but she doesn’t have the energy to soothe their guilt right now. She stares at the ceiling.

“Did Jane say you could eat? Or sleep?”

Puppy shakes her head. Kitty tenses.

“…Alright. That’s alright. Well, it’s not. Let’s get you cleaned up.”

The moment of guilt is over. Neither of them have the time or energy for any more of that.

yes and no. they definitely shouldve had one, but how things flow in the drama (i didnt read the novel so feel free to educate me!), between all that happens in ep 7 and ep 8, it almost felt like there was no time for that to happen. if anything, maybe instead of his percent going up from being jealous of seeing her with fuyi, they couldve done something there, but the version of ziqi theyre trying to portray is one who is already beginning to like her romantically, skipping over the friendship part and just wanting to Be Together. like a desperate lovesick puppy

I figure ep 9 is a better place to respond than your ep 4 rewatch because it's here that Miaomiao says Mu Sheng should go see a therapist. The drama keeps a lot of the novel's dialogue about how Mu Sheng sees himself (he's tired of his life, he thinks that his death is the ideal solution to everything, he believes that his only purpose in life is to protect Mu Yao, etc), but it doesn't go into detail. How does a person with such deep loathing for himself and suicidal tendencies behave?

In the novel, the moment when he realizes how much he wants her affection and her warmth, he instinctively wants to kill that desire for self-protection. He believes that he's a monster and only a saint like Mu Yao will care about him. He fears rejection and believes that it's inevitable, so he wants to get rid of her. But at the same time, he really wants her attention and gets upset when she ignores him. The more he likes her, the more he gets scared of what he thinks will happen. He doesn't have the sense of security to want to enter a romantic relationship yet.

(Whereas in ep 8, it seems as if Miaomiao had said she likes him instead of saying she cares about him because she's his disciple, he wouldn't try to send her away. His fear is that she will reveal his secret to Mu Yao.)

He hates himself, so he keep sabotaging his relationships. He has to believe he's deserving of love and friendship to stop pushing her away. And even then, healthy behavior isn't the absence of bad behavior. It's a completely new set of behavior that happy people learn from their interactions with parents as children. For a person like Mu Sheng, who didn't come from a happy family, he has to learn it as an adult from Miaomiao.

We can sort of see this in the drama too when Mu Sheng says he doesn't like to argue with Mu Yao in ep 4. 

I really like how you phrased his mindset in that moment "placating her and telling her he doesn't like arguing with her, that sister knows best, just because he can't deal with hearing her say these hurtful things anymore, and he cant handle it if his sister has such a negative view of him, all while hes trying to smile. its genuinely hurting him internally, as we see in a moment. "

In the novel scenes where he thinks/says those lines, he's innocent of what Mu Yao is accusing him of even though it looks incriminating. Mu Yao gives him time to explain, but he doesn't want to. He wants the conversation to end as fast as possible. As the readers, we can see that this sort of misunderstanding has happened so many times in the past and shaped Mu Yao's view of him, but she still asks him. She desperately wants him to be innocent, but he's so stuck in his negative emotions that he can't see this.

"if you think it was me, then it was me." This new line and his expression when he says this is so perfect for how Mu Sheng views himself in the novel. His self-esteem is a house of cards shakily propped up by how Mu Yao and Miaomiao view him. He places Mu Yao and Miaomiao on a pedestal, and I like how the novel shows this places an unfair burden on Mu Yao and Miaomiao. I don't think this aspect is shown in the drama.

Anyways, I like that we get to see a different take on their relationship in the drama. I just wish the drama spent more time on it, especially their relationship as fan/reader and author.

since mu sheng is xia ziqi's self-insert, who does that make yao (not that she has to be a specific someone, i just mean does she stem from somewhere)? 

I viewed it as this is how a teenage boy would write an empowered woman. Except for a few scenes closely adapted from the novel, she doesn't have emotional fragility. I love that scene where Mu Yao is the only one not affected by the water demon's deepest fear trap, so its not that I want her changed. More like, it would be interesting to see her change. For example, if she had rethought her view on what a hero should be like after meeting Guo Xiu.

On a side note, that Mu Sheng would say he's not a member of the Mu clan and only Mu Yao's brother would imply he was treated badly. Do Mu Yao and Mu Sheng ever talk about this in the drama?

In the novel, Fu Zhou is a female author, has no connection to Mu Sheng, and the story is not a dream. So, the characters that a teenage boy writes would be different from the characters that a woman would write. It would have been interesting to see the female protagonists that Fu Zhou writes as an adult. I'm curious how Fu Zhou would portray Mu Yao in his revised version. I think she would be more nuanced.

The drama removes three female characters (Lin Yu's aunt, Mu Yao's biological mother, and Mu Yao's father's legal wife) and adds four male characters and one female character (Cuicui, Guo Xiu, the marquis, Liu Fuyi's master, and Liu-niang). The novel's final mystery arc is female-centric. It can be viewed as a tale of four mothers, the sacrifices they've made, and how that shaped their children in a patriarchal society part 2. 

(Which sounds depressing, but it's being revealed during the happiest time in Mu Sheng and Mu Yao's lives. Their childhoods sucked, but they met people that love them and helped them walk out the shadows of their childhood, and their future will be so happy. I think this is why the author chose to reveal their parents' stories this way.)

Although I want to protest about screenwriters that change female-centric novels to focus on the male protagonist in xianxia drama adaptations, it wouldn't make sense that a teenage boy would write that type of story. He doesn't understand how women think or how motherhood changes and impacts women.

"again, i think miaomiao is disregarding that this is a parallel universe, since she just sees it as the book's world and everyone is pretend, so venting like this, especially to ziqi, is not something that she has to hesitate about. they dont understand, and they dont fully question her, so why not speak to them as if they arent real people? at this point in the series, thats still how she sees them."

When I rewatch the part where she's sharing her vulnerable thoughts to him, I wish we could have gotten a scene where they're themselves with their memories intact and continued this conversation. It would have been such a good resolution! We never get to see them on the same page. We find out that Catching Demons is like a love letter to Miaomiao, but Miaomiao doesn't know that. I feel like I went to a restaurant, patiently waited for the chef to cook, enjoyed tasting while waiting, and right after the splendid meal was about to be served, the restaurant closed and takeout wasn't allowed.

"i like that after 5 years of traveling together the name ziqi has not come up once."

Lol. Shows that Mu Sheng has no friends T.T Strangers would call him Mu-gongzi/Young Master Mu to be polite. Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi call him Ah'Sheng. His mom calls him Sheng'er. In the novel, Miaomiao is the only one that calls him by Mu Sheng or Ziqi. I like that the marquis refers to him as that Ziqi guy because that's how he hears Miaomiao's address for Mu Sheng. That was a nice detail.

and yes, miaomiao has clearly changed a lot in the story, yet with how she is supposed to escape, the system will still ensure that she gets through it similarly, since she HAS to defeat the resentful woman, so the story has to continue,

I keep forgetting the system gives her two goals in the drama. I think this is because we only see Miaomiao working on Mu Sheng's favorability % and Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi's relationship. Let me know if I'm wrong or if I miss something. In the novel, she works on finding out more about the final boss and increasing her fighting ability to prepare for the ending throughout the story.

When I was re-watching the drama, I noticed how the omission of very minor details changed how I view Miaomiao. For example, in the novel, when Mu Sheng sticks the immobilizing charm on her to snatch Liu Fuyi's sachet from her, MiaoMiao's first thought is on the charm, how cool and useful it is. She asks him for one. It shows that she cares more about the demon hunter world and planning for future dangers over Mu Sheng and his petty behavior.

but hes so annoyed LOL. using a control talisman because HE WANTS THAT DANG IT. no hesitation at ALL.

ahhhhhh looking at the sachet for a moment and then her as he goes to grab it. he wants to intimidate and tease her so badlyyyyyyy

Oh Mu Sheng, if only you kept this jealous behavior and ripped off the love bracelet. What was the point of testing the bracelet? He should have just yanked the bracelet off. It's like seeing people on fire and not wanting to get close to them to throw water over them because they're naked. In an emergency situation, there is an exemption for everyday politeness.

In a magical world where a single talisman can make someone execute a complicated action and one person has the power to alter the memories of an entire village for years on end, and there's no magical way to check, an experienced demon hunter like Mu Sheng should have basic safety protocols. If she isn't acting like herself, the first step should be to strip her down to make sure there's no hidden magical item and question her to pinpoint when their memory or behavior changed.

and how he looks surprised "its a sachet" / "doesnt it look like that?" my guy what skills do you possess besides being super hot? because idk i havent quite seen them

Lol. Is it clear in the drama that he's terrible because this is the first time he's made a protective sachet? In the novel, the first ones that he offers Miaomiao are three lumpy bags crammed with talismans. A protective sachet normally has ONE talisman. He stayed up after their 5-in-a-row games to make them. Gets rejected by Miaomiao. Later on, he forcefully gives her one that's just as nice as Liu Fuyi's. Presumably, he's been secretly working on perfecting his sachet making skills.

crossing his armmmmssss i LOVE how much he does that and how LITTLE fuyi does it. like absolute foils for each other. wait. are mu sheng and liu fuyi supposed to be two sides of ziqi? ive considered it but i dont know. blah, i dont want to talk about this right now, so many of you are much better at this than i am.

This would have been so interesting for the drama to explore! What does it mean that Fu Zhou had Mu Sheng marry Lin Yu (a woman that was in love with Liu Fuyi? Just a way to torture himself? I wish we got to see them interact more beyond that drinking their sorrows away scene.

Early on in the novel, Mu Sheng has a one-sided competition going on with Liu Fuyi. Liu Fuyi is oblivious to this. As he likes himself more, he does this less. By the final story arc, he doesn't react negatively when Liu Fuyi consoles him about something. He still gets jealous of Liu Fuyi, but he recognizes that it's his problem and that it isn't okay to act out his jealousy. Mu Sheng's precious character growth!

hes just so pretty, even blurred. AND SO IS YAO. mu siblings gorgeous genes even tho theyre not blood-related.

i find that on rewatch, i like cuicui less and less? i had no problem with him on my first watch, and he doesnt even do anything wrong. i think i just found it grating to go through his scenes again LOL. like goddammit just give me the romance and action!

My tipping point for Cuicui was ep 21. I wish we could have seen Miaomiao supporting Mu Sheng after he spits out blood during the battle scene instead of having to hold a 150-year old bamboo demon. It would make sense that CuiCui was stuck in his original form because of the pressure of the formation. His role is to help push them together, but he's always standing between them and literally keeping them apart. I can see why fans are so upset about his character on Weibo and Douban.

(Feel free to ignore this ranting. Got carried away. I get so annoyed whenever I think about this. 

Ep 23 was the final straw. I watch the drama at 2x speed in any scene he's in. In the novel, we have Miaomiao idly playing with Mu Sheng's hair and him getting super flustered. She handfeeds him her snacks or any food that she enjoys with him, but it has now become the exclusive-privilege of Cuicui.

In the last third of the novel, even when she's talking to someone else, she notices when Mu Sheng is sad. She has become as sensitive to him as he is to her. She reaches out to hold his hand when he sits down next to her. She half-hugs him and holds his hands to make dumplings. Just little moments.

Instead, we have this in the drama:

In ep 14, Mu Sheng walks away because he's upset and jealous. After a similar situation in the novel, MiaoMiao drank a bit to get courage and went to Mu Sheng's room to apologize for poking at his sore spot. She ends up drinking way too much. After she apologizes, she rambles on that she's worried about him. That he should like someone like her. That he would be happy with her. That she would pamper him. She kisses him on the cheek and then tries to wipe her rouge off his cheek. This is how Mu Sheng knows that Miaomiao likes him.

How did they go from this to needing a 10-year old child to progress their relationship? Cuicui spilling Miaomiao's crush to Mu Sheng even though she told him not to.)

Sorry, this got too long. I've never felt so frustrated by any drama character before. More than any other reason, Cuicui is the reason why I only re-watch up to ep 8. I was curious to read your thoughts on ep 9 because you've pointed out so many things I missed, so I continued. I can just scroll past the Cuicui parts.

ziqi is so unserious. like not only does he not want to indulge in an emotional convo but he also has to pick on her and take personal offense.

miaomiao only taking fuyis hand. yeah thats on purpose.

say what youd like but i think he stares at her chest because he wants to confront her by looking at her face but cant, so he settles for that, then perhaps realizes that its inappropriate, so he looks back down. im just reading into things, thats what i do here.

following up to the ending of ep 8, we see ziqi STILL HOLDING HER HAND after putting on the ring.

did they put rings on fingers back then for marriage (yes im too lazy to look it up, sue me)? regardless, this feels like, even if it is, ziqi is clueless regardless, because he has no romantic awareness.

he purses his lips because he feels like hes committed some faux pax, but he doesnt know what, so he has to ask. the way he asks is so gentle, he really wants to know ;_;

miaomiao doesnt wanna tell! i think she was truly feeling some attraction towards him in this moment, but shes shy, and if she tried to tell him, hed make fun of her, or he wouldnt get it.
