POGGER IS ON & WORK TRIP
Pogger is on a work trip
What should I do in plinks abscence
Un-bury my lusus's corpse again
Kill my ex and hide her corpse under the floor
Stage a coup
Record myself freestyling until I say something gay

Eroticism and Early Britpunk Fashion
Recently I read an interesting post about rockstars, a once ubiquitous sub-category of celebrity that's currently fallen to the cultural wayside, and how eroticism is often an integral component of their public images.
And that got me thinking about early (as in 1976-1978) Britpunk's relationship to eroticism and sex. So here's a silly, rather disorganized write up I did on how sexual Britpunk fashion is and why I think that appealed to certain people.
Unlike many youth subcultures, Britpunk- which, for those who don't know, is the British version of the punk subculture- tended towards asexual puritanism. Both as a reaction to the free love movement of the hippies that Britpunk characterized itself as being inherently in opposition to in both behavior and values, and as an extension of the theory put forward by Greil Marcus about punks being the spiritual successors to medieval heretics who considered the material world to be wholly corrupt- including and especially carnal pleasures such as sex.
Viv Albertine notes in her autobiography that in Britpunk culture sex was treated as a commodity, no emotional attachment needed. Johnny Rotten, the main figurehead of the punk movement at the time, once famously called sex 'five minutes of squelching sounds' and his deep disgust for anything sexual did a lot to shape the subculture's negative perception of sex. There are barely any Britpunk songs from the era that portray romance as something positive and even less that discuss sex in any way at all.
So isn't it a bit odd that Britpunk fashion is so sexual? Because it is very sexual.
A lot of original Britpunk fashion is appropriated fetish gear. Bondage suits, leather, collars, and latex. SEX/Seditionaries, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's boutique that basically single-handedly created the iconic look of early Britpunk, carried all of this along with t-shirts with sexual images- such as a pair of women's breasts or the word 'perv' spelled out in chicken bones- or actual porn on them- such as drawings of cowboys touching tips or Snow White having a gang bang with the Seven Dwarfs. The London Leatherman, who got his start in the gay leather scene, made leather clothes and accessories for bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash and The Slits while allowing McLaren and Westwood to sell his wares in their store. Ripped clothes that showed off the chest and chains as an accessory were also common. Because of this the average punker in London was decked out in clothes that wouldn't look out of place in a sex club.
Let's take a look at some examples.
Tumblr media
(Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols wearing a handcuff around his wrist and a t-shirt with a drawing of gay cowboys that resembles Tom of Finland's work on it.)
Tumblr media
(Paul Simonon of The Clash wearing a shirt that says 'everyone's a prostitute' and has two scantily clad women on it.)
Tumblr media
(Siouxsie Sioux wearing a t-shirt with a pair of women's breasts on it.)
Tumblr media
(Soo Catwoman wearing a spiked collar with a chain around her neck.)
Tumblr media
(Various members of the Bromley Contingent, including actual dominatrix Linda, wearing various erotic clothing items such as a see through dress, collars, and leather shorts.)
Tumblr media
(Jordan and Vivienne Westwood wearing full bondage suits.)
Tumblr media
(Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols wearing a ripped version of the gay cowboys shirt that intentionally exposes his naval and nipple.)
Tumblr media
(Adam Ant wearing a leather t-shirt.)
Tumblr media
(Paul Simonon of The Clash wearing a leather jacket, leather trousers, and a spiked leather wristband while exposing his bare chest.)
Tumblr media
(Alan Jones wearing a shirt that says 'perv' on it and Chrissie Hynde wearing a latex or leather top while another woman wears a latex or leather dress.)
So if Britpunk was so anti-sex, why play with such erotic imagery?
For Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, fashion was an art form that was all about bringing the taboos of the repressed British culture out from the shadows, including and especially the aesthetics of sex. They wanted to shock people out of their complacency and liberate young people. What better way to do that then to turn something as incredibly taboo as fetishes primarily associated with gay men (latex, leather, and bondage) into the hot new couture? But neither Westwood nor McLaren were actually interested in sex (especially not with each other despite having a child together) and were content to simply explore it in an artistic and emotionally distant way. Their clothes are sexual but they aren't sexy. The eroticism exists primarily to make a point, not to tantalize.
Westwood about SEX/Seditionaries' clothes: "We’re here to convert, liberate and educate. We want to inspire people to have the confidence to live out their fantasies and change. What we’re really making is a political statement with our shop by attempting to attack the system."
But why wear these clothes? Obviously teenagers and young adults love the idea of doing (and wearing) taboo things that piss off their parents and other boring old farts. Obviously fans of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and other punk bands wanted to dress like their idols and set themselves apart from the average citizen. But why else did punkers- in particular young female punkers- latch on so heavily to such risque fashion?
Well, to steal one of the few good lines from Danny Boyle's Pistol, when you dress like that you get a lot of funny looks but no wolf whistles.
If you've spent enough time online, you may be familiar with the concept of danger hair. If not, it basically means that if a young woman has brightly colored dyed hair then she's crazy and you shouldn't bother hitting on her. Kind of like how a poison dart frog is brightly colored to let birds know that it's deathly poisonous and they shouldn't bother eating it. Obviously this phrase is misogynistic but it does have a kernel of truth to it. Throughout history certain women have chosen to dress in ways that are intentionally unappealing to the majority of men in order to ward off unwanted advances.
Britpunk fashion on women was, despite how sexual it was, deeply unappealing to men. Legs McNeil, co-founder of PUNK magazine, talked extensively about how vile he found punk girls who dressed in the Britpunk style, how sexually unappealing they were to him. Little did he know, that's why those girls were dressing like that in the first place.
Back in the 1970s, the Britpunk style was beyond shocking to the majority of people. If you were a teenage girl or young woman who didn't want anyone to catcall you or make random passes at you while you were out on the town, decking yourself out in the latest clothes from SEX was a great way to get most men off your back. Instead of danger hair, it was danger clothes. Just because you were dressed in a sexual way didn't mean you were dressed sexy- at least in the opinion of the average man at the time.
Unfortunately though you'd just be trading in one form of violence for another as it was common for members of other youth subcultures to brutally attack punks who wandered the streets alone.
These days though everyone wants a punk girlfriend. Too bad they won't be getting one!

ok off the top of your head, your three most developed OCs:
what's their favorite color
are there any movies that would make them cry
how do they handle scary things/horror?
Thanks for the ask, and it's nice to meet you!
Okay, so my three most developed OCs in What You Cast Out are Tracey, Sarah, and Reliquus.
Favorite color Tracey: It's black. She's actually pretty uncaring about color, but black is a neutral color that matches everything and freaks people out, so she gravitates towards that. Sarah: Sarah loves greens and blues, with a hint of purple or pink sometimes to spice things up. She's not unaware of the irony in her liking green, but will roll her eyes and get annoyed if anyone brings it up. Reliquus: The Reliquus... if they have a favorite color, it's probably something outside of the human visible range and doesn't have a name in any human language.
Movies that would make them cry Tracey: Don't tell anyone, and she will deny everything if you ask her about it, but she cried her eyes out at The Shape of Water. Sarah: Just about any sappy romance will do it, bonus points if it's a queer one. At the point in the story we meet her, any movie involving sibling relationships might also trigger a fit as well. Reliquus: I legit cannot even imagine the Reliquus watching a movie at all. Fiddler on the Roof, maybe?
Horror and Scary Things Tracey: Tracey has already survived things that would land most people in a hospital, and come out the other side... okay, maybe "okay" isn't the word, lol. She's quite good at compartmentalizing the fear, most of the time, but she does have limits. Mostly, she prioritizes getting to safety over the indulgence of panicking. Sarah: If Sarah has someone to protect, such as her niece and nephew nearby, she will go full Mama Bear and focus on protecting them at all costs. If it's just her, she's a lot more normal about it: screaming, having to fight back panic, but probably still surviving it. Reliquus: The Reliquus is the horror, thank you very much. And they're slightly offended at the implication that they're not the scariest thing in the room right now. You might want to start running.

What You Cast Out: A Tale From Little Egypt is a dark fantasy novel set in Southern Illinois. It follows a rookie police officer and an autistic punker as they investigate a murder, leading them back to the place the punker ran away from as a child and the things she told herself she must have imagined.
Monsters will attack. Elves will get high. And while all hell breaks loose, the locals will continue to complain that nothing interesting ever happens in Southern Illinois.

The novel is published in serial zine format on my Patreon and Ko-Fi pages. The first two chapters are already out for my supporters, ready to be downloaded and printed at your convenience!

49: Shopping // The Official Body
Tumblr media
The Official Body Shopping 2018, FatCat (Bandcamp)
If they ever tour again, London dance-punk trio Shopping are the kind of band you should drop everything to catch. I saw them on a stacked bill at Toronto’s Baby G in 2018, supported by Detroit experimental garage punks Tyvek and local emo act Feels Fine, and it was one of the sweatiest, most pogo-powered gigs I’ve ever been too. Shopping have a kind of loving telepathy onstage, exchanging lead vox, lacing together jittery high-stepping funk rhythms, and constantly cracking each other up. The last show I had tickets to before the pandemic lockdowns set in was a Shopping gig at Montreal’s La Vitrola with (adequate) electroclash act Automatic and (much-missed) post-punkers Dishpit that was rescheduled, rescheduled, and finally canceled.
youtube
That anecdote’s emblematic of the way the pandemic hip-checked a lot of the best indie rock bands of the late ‘10s just as they were building momentum, especially those who thrived on word of their live prowess to entrench their reputation. There hasn’t been much word from the Shopping camp in the past coupla years, which blows because they also really have the goods on record. The Official Body, produced by Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins, is the successor to ESG that the early ‘00s Rapture-Franz Ferdinand-LCD Soundsystem revival never really provided. Guitarist Rachel Aggs, bassist Billy Easter, and drummer Andrew Milk are all beasts on their chosen instruments, and the sound they make together has something of the endless party vibe of African highlife or soukous music. They’re a little more lyric-forward than ESG ever were though, kissing off the square world with a stream of deadpan personal-is-political sloganeering.
Collins has an unfailing sense of Cool, and his production helps Shopping sound like the kind of band that will always be in style. If their lyrics’ hyper-concern with the body and telling the straight world to keep its hands to itself will date-stamp it to a certain cultural moment, it will be in the same way Gang of Four’s talk of Armalite rifles and warfare on 18-inch screens does—speaking in specifics about concerns that are endemic to life in western society, while agitating always to change things for the better.

hey! sorry this is a bit of a weird ask- please feel free to ignore it- umm so I think I recall you sayin you were punk a little while ago? If that is you and is the case, do you have any tips/resources for baby punks?
I've really, honestly, tried lookin myself but all I can find are posts sayin that it ain't tied to the way you dress (true!), but I'm lookin for somethin more. Ya know? Somethin a little more informative.
Once again, real sorry.
Yeah totes. Punk is, in essence (aside from the clothes and music), about rebelling against the norm. Punk is the queers and the drag queens and the fags and poc, and alll the societal ‘undesirables’ that the white cishet high classes like to say are subhuman, and it’s them banding together to create a community where we take care of our own. Punk has changed a lot over the years, but it’s always been very strongly intertwined with activism. So there isn’t really much to DO per se, which may be why it’s hard for you to find info, other than just. Be loudly and proudly yourself, be caring and considerate to other people, and fight for what is right and what is important to you. Being punk is about expressing yourself and shedding the constraints of what other people expect or demand out of you. Which is usually silence and compliance.
The louder and angrier and more YOU you can be, the punker you are as far as I’m concerned
(If anybody reblogs this post. Do not tag it ‘q slur’ or ‘q word’. Don’t trigger tag my queer posts)

Here are my top Zutara fanfiction recs.
The biggest factor in my ranking and why I recommend them is because I had a hard time putting them down. Other than that, they are pretty all over the place in terms of content and setting.
His Majesty Prefers Blue by Shamelessliar
Rated M  212K+ words  Completed 2012
A year after the war's end, the gaang returns to the Fire Nation for a week of diplomatic meetings. There, they hear rumors about a vigilante who wears a blue mask and Katara finds herself digging deeper into his identity and motives. Blue/Zutara Lemons
Trigger warnings: rape, torture (1 scene)
This is my absolute favorite fic. It has a little bit of everything: romance, humor, drama, suspense. There is an actual plot too! It is also one of few fics which show Zuko and Katara being a great team.
When The Mask Comes Off by Jamie Hasaku
Rated K  73K+ words  Completed 2006
After freeing her and her friends from capture, Zuko has no choice but to care for a gravely injured Katara, who was left behind by accident. The trick? Keeping his face hidden so she doesn’t hurt herself even more by trying to fight him. Zutara Blutara
This is not your average capture fic. Katara is still pretty badass. The scene where she finds out who is behind the mask made my heart melt. Hanae is one of my favorite OCs ever! It does have a sequel which has been abandoned, but that doesn't change the fact that this story is wonderful by itself.
The Dragon and the Siren (AO3) The Dragon and the Siren (ff.net) by CultofStrawberry
Rated M/T  147K+ words  Completed 2012
Zutara, Hades x Persephone inspired. In a land of gods and spirits, Katara is the daughter of the Sea, and Zuko is the powerful and reclusive God of the Fire Realms. Zuko has been pining for her for too long... so he finally takes action.
Being a huge fan of Greek mythology and A:TLA, I did not think I would enjoy this fic. I was pleasantly surprised as the author combined the two seamlessly. The worldbuilding is amazing and the tale is not an exact replica of the myth. The AO3 link contains smut, but is incomplete. The fanfiction link has the completed story.
  Subterfuge by Smylealong
Rated M  113K+ words  WIP last updated Oct 2020
Thirty years ago, the Fire Nation attacked, throwing the world off balance. Katara entered the Fire Nation war camp at Ba Sing Se as a healer, prepared to do whatever it takes to play her part in stopping the war. Getting kidnapped with the Fire Prince and falling in love with him were not parts of the plan. AU. Zutara.
Trigger Warnings: Sexual Assault, Incest, Graphic Depiction of Violence
This fic is VERY dark. However, the writing is amazing which more than makes up for it.
Dancing in the Dark by DamageCtrl
Rated T  61K+ words Complete 2006
Post-Season 2 AU: While in Ba Sing Se, Katara and Toph hear a rumor about two tea servers in the lower tiers of Ba Sing Se and sneak away go to investigate only to have their suspicions confirmed. On her personal time, Katara tries to teach herself to dance and fails so badly, a masked man takes pity on her to try to help.
In case you haven't noticed, I LOVE the Blue Spirit. This fic is full of fluff, and awkward Zuko is my favorite Zuko. It does start slow, but once you get into it, it is a pretty cute story. Zuko is the one with multiple suitors for once.
Twist Me to the Left by Grapefruittwostep
Rated T  91K+ words  Complete 2017
So here Zuko is, with no family, no band, and no more record contract. Just another punker with a guitar who thinks he's got what it takes. Then he meets Avatar, the band breaking all the rules. They've got everything going for them, the rising star, and they're everything Zuko isn't. But maybe, just maybe, they want a new guitarist. As long as the pretty keyboardist with the blue eyes doesn't murder Zuko first.
Warnings: References to Drugs
This is a college age AU with an angsty emo/punk Zuko. A fluffy enemies to lovers trope, but fun nonetheless.
Don't Stand So Close To Me by Cinemascope08
Rated M  76K+ words  Abandoned 2013
Katara and the Gaang are in full swing at Ba Sing Se University when interactions with a new professor start affecting Katara's life in increasingly complicated ways. Rated M for scenes of a graphic nature.
Trigger Warning: Torture, Murder, BDSM, Incest
Another really dark fic, but it takes a bit to get there. Once it does, you are hooked by the suspense. It is abandoned, but still a good read.
So let us melt and make no noise by LittleLostStar
Rated M 69K+ words  WIP last updated Jan 2021
When a mission to the South Pole goes awry, Prince Zuko awakens in the home of a healer named Katara and finds his heart is damaged and his bending has vanished. His quest to find the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe is his destiny-- the one chance to regain his honour and return home. But as time passes and Zuko's heart heals, it becomes clear that Katara is protecting an ancient secret of her own, and that both of their destinies are entwined in ways never before thought possible.
We get to see Zuko at the mercy of Katara here. And this fic has an actual plot to it, which is an easy way to get into my good graces. There is a lot of mystery and suspense. It has slow updates, but the author has commented that she intends to complete it.
Butterflies and Hurricanes by Rerbirth of the Phoenix
Rated T  103K+ words  Complete 2012
"You may find yourself capturing hearts that you are forbidden to keep." She is a servant. He is a Prince. Together they are about to go against everything that keeps the world at peace. Zutara
This one took me a bit to get into, as I was bothered by the ages at the start. Fortunately, it takes place over several years so we see the relationship develop. No spoilers, but wow the ending really got me.
  The Penance Series by delectate
Rated M  39K+ words  Complete 2010
The road to forgiveness is long and arduous...just ask Zuko. Season 3 Zutara, following the episodes past 312. Rated M for Mature.
Warnings: BDSM
Zuko is taken prisoner at the western air temple. As it turns out, Zuko is a masochist and Katara lets her freak flag fly. I like this one because it does such a different take on the characters, and it actually makes sense that Zuko would be a masochist since he has such a messed up family.
Lotus Lake by Rebirth of the Phoenix
Rated T 65K+ words  Complete 2006
Zutara AU. An orphaned Katara and her brother find themselves at boarding school. Katara's first thoughts are that her life will now be filled with boredom. How wrong she was!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse
This is a bonus rec. While not super high on my list, it is still an enjoyable story. Plus, I really like the boarding school premise since I love shows like Rebelde and Het Huis Anubis. I would have liked to see more drama with Jet though. Still a good one if you are looking for fluff.
I added some more to my top recs!
  Indigo Summer by Serendipitea
Rated T  21K words  Complete 2020
Zuko takes up a life guarding job the summer before going off to university. What he doesn't expect is to be completely distracted by the surfer girl with bright blue eyes.
This one is just so darn cute
And expectations she won't meet by Gxldentrio
Rated  T  8K words  Completed 2020
Katara’s organic chemistry TA is an asshole ----- or is he?
A texting/social media fic that I reread all the time because it is just that GOOD! I love the way the author uses all the character's interactions to tell a cohesive story.
(if my wishes came true) it would have been you by TheDecension
Rated  T  34K words  WIP Last updated Mar 2021
Katara overshares on the internet. Zuko makes it a point to only lurk. Good thing there's nothing tying their online adventures to their real lives — right?
Or, Katara and Zuko have something of a history, and when they reconnect after months of silence, there could be more going on behind the scenes than they realize.
If you haven't heard of this one, you should! It is though social media posts and text, and it is just wonderful!

“Scratchcard Lanyard” by Dry Cleaning
MG:
Ostensibly, “Scratchcard Lanyard” is a song of words without meaning, strung together for their clang associations, but then why do I slam my car door every afternoon after parking it on the empty side of the street and think “A WOMAN IN AVIATORS FIRING A BAZOOKA” as I walk to my apartment? It’s a curse and a shield both -- I’ve concluded my working day, try and kill me. And then I get inside the building and I’m back to being a Tokyo bouncy ball, an Oslo bouncy ball, a Rio de Janiero bouncy ball, just interchangeable sounds, as purposeless and small as a plaything can be. I won’t suggest that post-punkers Dry Cleaning have found a new form of expression amid their wiry guitars and flat affects, but I will say that “Scratchcard Lanyard” maths up in a way Entertainment! does not. These aren’t expressly political observations, but even the corporate journal of record (The New York Times) recognizes that the economy is more than a budget and in that same way that civil society contributes something money can’t paper over, Florence Shaw’s apparent ennui belies all the rage and frustration threatening to overwhelm the system.
DV:
In one sense, on a personal level, loads happened in 2021 - had a baby, switched jobs, etc etc - but when I hear Florence Shaw sing “Do everything/ Feel nothing” it feels like the opposite’s been the case, at least day-to-day. As the second year of the pandemic’s drawing to a close I’m doing nothing and feeling everything, seemingly growing more sensitive by the day but also still only leaving the house to run errands at a handful of stores. And that will change, at least partially, at least hopefully: MG and I have some concert tickets we might finally get to use in January. Maybe at some later point I’ll stop getting teary every time I think of something with the tiniest emotional resonance. But “Scratchcard Lanyard” is most interesting to me because the city-to-city ennui Shaw describes, the affectless numbing effect of too much travel, is the inverse of my experience since 2020. Being largely confined to a single place has brought me much more in touch with myself (and my partner, for that matter) than I ever managed to achieve during the years before, in all that traveling and experiencing and learning. Sometimes a song teaches you about yourself by giving you language or sound that embodies how you’re feeling; I appreciate “Scratchcard Lanyard” for the experience of learning something from what I’m not.

Hello everyone! Chapter 7′s here! I posted this last night, but I forgot to post it on here too. It’s very long and took me forever to write, but I like how it turned out. It’s 13 000 words, so it’s longer than any chapter I’ve ever written for a fic, but I really like how it turned out, and I hope you do too. I’m sorry if it’s a little cringey in the beginning, it gets better, I promise. But yeah, I’m in the process of writing the next one, which should be up by Monday. As always, I hope you enjoy the chapter, and any feedback is much welcome. Thanks guys! Until next time!

„What is going on with you?! This is not how you usually behave.“
„You don't know me or how I behave!“ Annabeth snarled, „Do you really expect me to just sit down and let her walk over me like that? Fat chance!“
„What has she done to you?“ her dad crossed his arms.
„She has been humiliating me all evening!“ Annabeth cried, „She's been impugning everything I said since she came in! And now those two rip my whole life's work?! And you're defending them?!“
„That's enough,“ her dad finally stopped her, „I don't know what she's done to make you act this way, or why all of a sudden you're behaving like this, but I will not stand for it. Go to your room and cool off. When you're ready to apologize to Helen, then you can come down.“
„I'll apologize to that bitch when the sun burns out of the sky!“ Annabeth snarled.
„That's enough, young lady!“ her dad shouted, „I don't know what's gotten into you, but ever since you've been hanging around that Percy guy, you've been snappy and impolite! Helen's right, punkers are never a good influence, and you're proof of that! I don't want to see you with him ever again, am I clear?!“
Oh no he didn't! He can shout at Annabeth all he wants, but no one, no one , is going to speak about Percy like that. She won't let them. Not now, not ever. Especially not her father who knows nothing about Percy. He has no right to tell her who she can or can't see. She's known Percy just a few weeks, and she was closer with him than she ever was with her father. He was practically a stranger to her. And she will not let a stranger tell her what to do.
„You have absolutely no right to tell me what I can or can't do!“ she screamed, „Percy's the best guy in this whole world! Better than you a million times, and then a million times that! He's the best influence in this whole city! He's the sweetest, kindest guy in the whole universe, and I will not stand by and let anyone talk about him like that! You can shout at me all you want, you can ignore and neglect me all you want, you can defend that witch of a woman for walking over me as much as you want, I don't care, but no one, and I mean this, no one in this whole world will speak badly of Percy Jackson, so long as I'm alive! Yes, he's a punker, and yes, he can be rowdy and cause trouble, but he's the best person I've ever met! And I won't let you, or anyone else, speak poorly of him!“ She shouted at the top of her lungs, glaring at him.
Her anger rose with each word. She wasn't sure where exactly it came from, but when Helen said that about Percy, something inside Annabeth clicked and she went off. Deep in her heart, she knew she cared about Percy more than anything else. She felt the sudden need to protect and defend him from every bad word, and that's exactly what she did, and what she plans to do whenever someone dared utter a bad word about him. Over her dead body. Her dad finally looked away, flinching under her gaze. Annabeth shook her head. She didn't know her dad's such a wimp, but she also wasn't exactly surprised. She grabbed her black leather jacket and pulled it on, grabbing her keys and some money.
„Where do you think you're going? We're not done talking here.“ She felt him grab her arm again.
Annabeth spun around, glaring at him again, „Well I am! I'm not staying in this house as long as she's here. And you and I,“ she hissed, gesturing between them, „We will talk when you grow a spine and for once stand up for me! And don't you dare ever again utter a bad word about someone I care about, especially about Percy Jackson, or you'll see just how bad my attitude can get!“
She did not wait for a response. Instead, she just ripped her arm out of his grasp and slammed the door behind her. She was walking down the path of her front yard, thinking what to do now, when she heard the door open behind her.
„Annabeth! Annabeth, wait!“ her dad called out.
Annabeth did not wait, nor did she turn. She just stepped out onto the sidewalk and marched away down the street.

Cured Pink — Current Climate (Rough Skies)
Tumblr media
Current Climate by Cured Pink
Cured Pink is a Brisbane-based post-punk-into-dub experimental outfit, headed by Andrew McClelland. The band’s last missive, 2015’s As a Four Piece, was fascinatingly hard to pin down. In my review for Dusted, I wrote, “The trick in assigning references is that Cured Pink sounds vaguely like a lot of things — the NY/Berlin art punk outfit Tonstartssbandht on the voice-heavy bits, the Fall on the more propulsive ones, dub-heavy post-punkers such as Pig Bag and the Pop Group in the echo-drugged sprawl of ‘Treated Unwell,’ fellow Aussies the Fabulous Diamonds, The English Beat, PiL, Cabaret Voltaire — at least until you listen to them side by side and then, when you do, not like any of them.”
This collection follows much the same pattern, swamping brain-rattling spoken rants with dense malaria-dreamed fever visions, where notes are shrouded in echo so thick that the rebound seems larger and realer than the music itself. McClelland’s crew is the same as last time with Stuart Busby blowing hallucinatory trumpet blasts, Mitchel Perkins thudding menacing, driving bass and Glen Schenau syncopating junk-yard percussion with manic precision.
McClelland himself spatters robotic verses, often not quite intelligible, but when emerging from the thick of it, as on “The Artist” squawking with indignation. He has a way of stuttering a line in broken bits, getting a bit of it out, backing up, starting again, getting further next time, and lurching finally to the end. Reiteration drills the sense out of the words, so that they become mainly bits of sound, for instance, “I am making things that match up, making things that match, making things that match up, making things that match…” And yet you’re haunted by the sense that there is a meaning and a narrative in there, one that flitters like a swamp light in your peripheral vision, always just out of grasp.
These tracks were recorded between 2012 and the present, suggesting that there’s some temporal, as well as personnel overlap with As a Four Piece. In any case, it’s hard to discern a trajectory from one to the other. They are equally abstract and knotty, equally physically transporting. I do find, however, that Current Climate sags towards the end, after the explosive jitters of “The New Public” and “Drone Pleasure,” it slips into a trance-y, soul-flavored groove in “Good Day on the Internet,” then gets a little snoozy with jungle-drummed, vocoder’d, endless “Sunshine,” and “Pop Up Shop.” I get the appeal of draining hot genres like dub/soul/funk of their emotional content and seeing what’s left in the grooves, but these songs go on for a long time in which nothing much happens. “Another Urban Fox” is pretty good though, in a booming, echoing, dystopic dance way, pitched somewhere between Shackleton and the Fall.
Last summer, the blogosphere collectively went a little ape shit for Black Midi, a much younger band with a similar ranted, chanted, complexly rhythmed aesthetic. You have to wonder what the same writers would make of Cured Pink, which is in the same ballpark but wilder, weirder and with a trumpet.

AP web exclusive: All Time Low tour diary
Posted by Scott Heisel on 08-Dec-06 @ 04:43 PM
Last month, Baltimore pop-punkers All Time Low took to the road with Sugarcult for a series of shows on the West Coast. Here's some of what they saw, in words and pictures. Learn more at www.alltimelow.com.
#1------------------------------------------------------------ Ooohooo So last night we celebrated two awesome occasions...well 3 since matt's molars finally grew in...anyways yesterday was Haloween and our first night of our tour with Sugarcult. I must say, it is pretty strange touring with a band who I spent the better years of my middle school life watching on MTV. Regardless of where this band has been, it definetly didn't eff with their personalities. They were all super nice to us and each came up and introduced themselves. The show went pretty well but it wasn't a good judgement of our the whole tour is going to be because Sugarcult didn't even headline, the Eagles Of Death Metal did, and the tickets for $25 on Haloween night :) I'm sorry but I would never go to a show if those were the circumstances...I'd be out expanding my collection of holiday treats. Tonight the 'real' tour begins so we will see how it goes. We are playing Washington State University in Pullman Washington. We haven't done too many college shows, so this should be interesting...anyways before we got on the road a couple days ago we were couped up in Ben Harper's (formely of yellowcard, now in amber pacific) house/studio in long beach, CA working on our new CD :). We demoed some hot licks that were going to send over to our producer matt squire so that he can put in some input. I heard my blogs are going to be posted on the Alternative Press website for this tour, so if that's the case then...helll yeah! Well I just woke up from sleeping in the van so I am gonna walk out into the freezing streets of Pullman, WA crack my back and grab some Qudoba. Much Love, Jack --jbstar #2------------------------------------------------------------ Yoo dooodds, So I'm gonna update you guys on the passed couple shows...on Wednsday we played Washington State University. Those kids are freaking crazy! Everyone seemed to be having a good time and we made some awesome new friends. I cannot stress enough, how cool the Sugarcult guys are. Which is really cool because I have been listening to those guys since 6th grade! Anyways before we played, matt thought it would be a good idea to have a fork and knife fight backstage...yeah it turned pretty ugly and we should have some footage online soon enough. That night we partied at 'The Christmas House'. Lets just say that I'm pretty sure alex made out with a dog...I really miss Hit The Lights :( Anways...we played Seattle after the college show and it was offf the hoooook. Everyone in the room was dancing and it got pretty redic. As soon as we told them the alex/dog story they went nuts. We met up with the Pink Spiders that night. We were nervous about that because we've heard some stuff...but for real those guys are the shit. There all super nice and we have no complaints about them. We have yet to tour with a band who we don't get along with (fingers crossed). We also heard that we may be doing a few shows with Cobra Starship in Dec, if that happends that would be sick. I'll keep you guys updated. Someone made us a bucket of the craziest donuts ive ever seen at the portland show last night!! They were reallly good. Sorry for the lack of pics, I'll make sure my next post has more, its just hard to take good pics on a sidekick :). Talk to you guys soon!!Jacko #3------------------------------------------------------------ Yo Babaayyss, Last nights show was off the hook! I love playing at The Boardwalk in orangevale calii. The crowd was as wild as usual and a bunch of kids were singing along. A lot of the same kids who saw us there on the Amber Pacific tour came back. Its always cool to see so many familiar faces,,,cough cough hint hint nudge...you get the idea folks! The next couple shows should be interesting...reno and vegas. I wont be able to gamble but at least ill be able to look at a lot of lights. We all have family comming out, so that should be exciting. I havent seen my brother and sister in ages and i know their gonna be wasted so that means they will be even more friendly :) Also Meg n Dia join up in vegas which is sick, SO SIKED FOR THAT!!! We met them on warped and their super nice. anyways i think its time, i go to In and Out because after this tour im not going to be able to go back for a while :( im going to eat there everyday twice a day until we leave Arizona. Ive attached pics from our set on the Epitaph stage at this years Bamboozle Left and also some pics of our acoustic set the 2nd day! Thanks to everyone who watched us either/both days :) love you peace peace n a bottle o' hair grease, jack #4------------------------------------------------------------ Wow...vegas has to be one of the strangest places on this earth. First of all we showed up in Reno (shity city) only to find that only sugarcults crew was there and the show probably wasnt going on. We were welcomed by a hooker in a pink tanktop and no teeth asking if we had any shirts we could give her...Thankfully we have power windows and middle fingers. Thankfully zack was asleep or he might have took her up on some of her offers...he's getting desperate you know..just kidding! Anyways we decided to hang out with sugarcults crew for a little then start the drive to vegas early since it was 8 house. We got to go over the Hoover Damn which was sweet. It's seriously Vegas Vacation all over again! Anyways, we got to vegas around midnight and it was a fantastic site! My bro and sis were staying at the MGM so thats where i headed. Rian to the Excalibur, Alex and Matt to the Venecian and Zack to the Luxor. We all split up and hung out with our fam for the evening. My brother took me around vegas and boyyy was it interesting. I was approached by numerous drunk people. It was basically like an Ocean City, Maryland for older people. It's just a place for adults to drink, walk around drunk, act like teenagers and maybe gamble a bit here n' there. it was Akward to say the least. Anyways the next day was the show at the House Of Blues at Mandalay Bay...probably one of the nicest venues we have ever played. We introduced ourselves to the Meg n Dia folks and got to know our new tour mates as we shared a dressing room. We soon found they are awesome people and they share a love for getting wild! The show was pretty cool, and the crowd was big. It was weird though because the merch was not in the venue, it was in the cassino haha. Anyways Vegas was an experience we wont forget, and I cant wait till we go there again. I hope the next time we go, were 21...actually nevermind because that would be three years :)stay rad, Jack #5------------------------------------------------------------ Lame! Tonight was our last show on the Sugarcult Tour featuring The Pink Spiders and Meg n Dia :( Damone will be taking our place on this great lineup. I am jelous that they get to join up! Anyways we made some lifetime friends on this tour and it was a great experience for everyone. Every single show was amazing and the fans never let us down. Traveling to bumfuck arizona and hearing a couple hundred kids sing your song is the coolest feeling ever. Sugarcult was very warming towards us and their personalities suprised the shit out of me. they were such cool guys and even when zack was sick they made him soup and gave him Emergen-C. WHO DOES THAT !?!? Thats like something my mom does...so in a way Sugarcult are our parents. They actually reffered to us as their younger brothers on stage. At the last show of the tour in Little Rock, Arkansas us and Meg n Dia ran on stage during "Bouncing Off the Walls" and started bouncing around and took over Tim's Guitar n Mic, Marko's (my twin) guitar and Airens Bass. It was so fun to bro down with a band that ive been listening to since middle school haha. Alex also got to soundcheck with sugarcult at Texas AM College because tim was at the hospital taking care of his sickness (i think he had a nasty cold). It was so crazy to see alex soundcheck with a band who for the past few years have held a special spot on my ipod and in my cd player :) I attached a pic of him sound-checking for fun. At the end of the show we said our goodbyes and gave our hugs. This is'nt the end of these friendships though, only the beggining...now we head home to write a new cd. Catch us on the road in the northeast in december when we head out with Cobra Starship! Stay safe, Jack

First Instance Research on American Horror Art and Music
Tumblr media
I was always fascinated by horror, since I started to think and like and dislike things, sometime before or around my 5th year of age.
My horror tendencies costed me dearly during elementary school. I was disliked by most of my classmates because of them.
To feel identified with skate and punk-rock when I was a teenager was fortunate. I think that it was, because there is an undeniable horror facet to punk-rock and skateboard aesthetics.
In less then one-thousand words, I’ll try to make a rough list of nexuses between punk-rock, skateboarding and horror. This is a first instance of me doing anything like it, and I thought it was appropriate to share it.
Music
1950s Horror Soundtracks
Fuelled by the 1958’s Horror Craze and New Age of Horror Cinema.
Tumblr media
1950s/1960s Horror Music
Horror records by Power Records, mainly Frankie Stein and his Ghouls.
Umbrella Terms: Horror Rockabilly / Surf Rock
Tarantula Ghoul and Her Gravediggers Kip Tyler and The Flips Lord Luther The Duponts Ronnie Cook and The G
Vee-Jay records, a Chicago records label. Established in 1953, on Gary, Indiana. Subsidiary of Concord Music Group. This label has more than a thousand releases. Still, only one of them pertains this post: “It’s Monster Time!” By The Deadly Ones.
In the sixties, its seems that the band that had the most horror-oriented aesthetics was Fleetwood Mac. If we don’t take on account Frankie Stein and His Ghouls, and a few others.
1970’s Psychobilly & Horror Punk
Tumblr media
The Cramps need a special mention. From my point of view of horror fan, it’s not just that their overall aesthetics are great. To me, Lux and Abbie approached music in a scientific way, and the result is a refined proto-punk rock that distillates a lot of other stuff that came before into a single, unified style.
Tumblr media
Not just that, but my educated guess is that The Cramps must have kick-started the psychobilly branch of the proto-punk genre.
Tumblr media
Misfts, from Lodi, NJ, and their neighbors/friends Mourning Noise are the quintessential horror punk bands. They worked hard to create and shape horror-punk.
Tumblr media
1980’s Death Punk/Skate Punk
Tumblr media
I don’t know the precise facts, but as I understand it, death-punk is horror-punk with a different nickname, and generally of the 1980s. Maybe because it was a return to the nineteen-seventies psychobilly/deathrock bands like Rocket from The Tombs. This is debatable, but who cares? There may be musical differences between death-rock and horrorpunk, but to me they are hard to spot.
Tumblr media
I don’t know the precise facts of music industry and never really did a research to find out when dark and creepy album covers got started.
Tumblr media
At first an educated guess made me search for the discography of the three earlier most important metal bands to find out. That would put Black Sabbath Judas Priest earlier in the time-line.
Tumblr media
But to say that early metal bands, or anyone else, like Daniel De Carlo, Fleetwood Mac, Delia Derbyshire or anyone else that ever made a camp record cover has anything to do with this post is like saying that horror records in general are at the level of the styles and scenes that Psychobilly and Horror Punk created.
Tumblr media
What I’m just trying to achieve with this post is to have a rough overview of the origins and everything between horror as related to music. But with a meaning or pattern to it.
Tumblr media
I think a dumb inquiry on this subject would be to conclude that after the induction of horror into the music world by Universal Studio soundtracks in the early nineteen-fifties, that a market for horror records was created.
Tumblr media
To see it like that would be dumb because if we take all the camp musicians that used horror aesthetics there’s not much meaning.
Tumblr media
Other than the feeble thread connecting garage rock bands of the fifties and sixties, that made creepy songs, before the Cramps at the lyrical and aesthetic level, and Misfits at all levels, nobody coordinated horror music into separate, focused styles.
Tumblr media
Horror-Themed Skateboard Deck Art
Tumblr media
The horror, psychedelic, comic, and cartoon styles dominated the skateboard deck design scene in the 1980s. It’s yet to be seen, when a database of skateboard decks appears, what was the proportion that each of the styles claimed.
Tumblr media
As I see it, most of the old-school decks had a camp or horror theme. Only when decks started having the standard banana shape design the art themes became broader. It’s yet to be seen in, in that sense, how the themes of skateboards evolved through the years. For this, that database will have to have a “genre” or “theme” field.
Tumblr media
All through skate history many skaters designed, drew and/or colored the art of their personal model. It’s unfortunate that a site where skateboard decks are classified with useful, reference data is still lacking.
Tumblr media
Because of this lack, I couldn’t find much information on who designed what. But someone who’s impossible to miss is Jim Phillips. To me, the most iconic of his work, the plethora designs he did for Rob Roskopp and Santa Cruz before the banana boom of the early 1990s.
Tumblr media
Other American Horror Art
Tumblr media
And why I didn’t include it? I threw a few names of horror music’s history and just touched the subject of horror art in skateboard decks. I didn’t pick any other subject like comics or film because this post was to make a point.
This is the point: from my point of view, nobody in culture, sub-culture or counter-culture of the earth’s nations developed a meaningful, cohesive horror-based scene like psychobilly rockers, horrorpunk punkers and skaters did.
Even if the skaters’s stylistic message is something bigger than the campy themes of the decks (and not that much related to horror), the statement made from the beginning about the preferred sensibilities is something with the potential to stay fresh today, and well into the future.

"Punk music from the 80's and early 90's says the same shit that anarchists are saying now"
The anarchist punk rockers from the 80s and 90s who were saying such things were not in any way mainstream (except arguably Kurt Cobain, immediately before blowing his head off with a shotgun, because that's the natural end result of trying to believe such things): the messages we see promoted today by every TV company, corporation, social media giant, western university and even police spokespeople (all white people are evil, all men are evil, black people can't be racist, and disagreeing with that is racist; transwomen are women and must be refered to as beautiful and brave) would have been absolutely unthinkable - even unconscionable - 40 years go. And not even the most underground hardcore punker from the 80s was saying a 5 year old should choose their own gender and be given the opposite sex's hormones.
"cancelling" people for little, overall irrelevant things or misunderstandings, but that's all internet culture."
People are literally being visited by police and/or arrested for refusing to call what looks like a bearded man in a dress a woman, and teachers are literally being arrested or suspended from work for refusing to use nonsensical made-up pronouns from their teen students:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All this is happening in the real world, not on the internet, and none of this was the status quo 30 years ago. All of it has come only from the pressuring of the left.
"Since 9/11, conservatives... have slid closer and closer to fascism"
You mean, in response to having a never-ending war declared upon them, and Islamic terror attacks continuing up until the present day? If you're using the term 'fascism' to refer to an increased vigilance towards outside threats, wouldn't that just be normal behaviour for any country in that situation? I mean, historically?
"I will openly say that I believe communist governments, like that of the former USSR and modern China, are in fact fascist."
Well now, that's some silly bullshit. First of all you link to Umberto Eco's "14 points of fascism" (as if it is a text signed off on by actual fascists, rather than a explicit criticism of them) and then say because Donald Trump appeals to Christians and patriots that he's a fascist, then you say the Soviet Union and 'The People's Republic' of China are ALSO fascist. If all these things are the same then words no longer have any meaning, and also all the western communists who have most visibly been running around screaming about how they are "smashing fascism" for the past 50 years have been seriously wasting their time.
(I mean, they have been wasting their time, but even more so if the words they have been screaming have no meanings.)
A clearer way of putting it, I think, would be: Communism and Fascism are both totalitarian. That doesn't mean both are fascist.
To expand upon what I said in my earlier post about the right in America, it's absurd to say that they are less "progressive" than earlier generations and are sliding much further right: 40, 50 years ago, all the way back to their party beginnings, it's impossible to imagine a transwoman like Blaire White, or a gay man like Milo Yiannopoulos being enthusiastically supported by right-wing Republicans the way they are today, and even more impossible to imagine them even tolerated by actual fascists and Nazis 80 years ago: Hitler and Mussolini would in all likelihood have had them killed.
The issue, really, is just what the cartoon at the top of all this says: ordinary things like love of one's country, some kind of religious faith, love of family, desire to protect children, vigilance of outside attacks and protection of one's culture and community, are the norm in just about every known culture in every point in history, but have all been increasingly redefined and demonized over the past 30 years by the left - and by you, in this very thread - as being dangerous, fanatical, far-right fascism.
It's nonsense. All these things can, in certain circumstances, lead to an increased militarism and aggressive warlike behaviour, but in themselves they do not indicate anything except human business as usual. The lens you are looking through at them is the thing that is new, the thing that is dangerous, fanatical and destructive, and that is the actual problem.
------
The Right today controls none of the entertainment industry, none of the education system, none of the social media giants, none of the TV companies and only a small minority of the mainstream press. But because the identity of the Left is so necessarily tied up in victimhood, they cannot recognize that all their positions they think they're revolutionarily fighting for are - culturally, at least - already the status quo. Republicans might be showing sign of beginning to become organised in ways they haven't since Reagan appealed to the 'religious right' for their support back in the 80s, but that's only because to not do so will simply guarantee their complete extermination.
Culture has sprinted left - and only left - for at least the past 30 years (I'd say 50, 60 years is a lot more accurate). It could be that that will change in the future, and the pendulum swing the other way - there certainly are stirrings of that on the internet, though they are routinely and aggressively stamped out by the very 'woke' (i.e. left-wing indoctrinated) internet companies - but to describe the actual reality in which we live today as the opposite of that is utterly delusional.
And I'll just put in here before anyone starts hurling the usual insults and ad hominems: I'm not American, I've never been a fan of the Republican Party, and I've never voted for the Conservatives (or any right-wing party) in my own country. I'm simply describing what I think anyone trying to be objective would have to note about where we are now culturally in relation to where we were 30, 40, or 80 years ago.
