I love both Law's subbed and dubbed voices; the fact that both VA's also voice Levi from Attack on Titan is wild!

Just like her encounter at Loguetown two years ago, she asks her victor why he isn't finishing her off. She is offended to be spared. But Law did not spare her because he is the pitying type.

Honestly I have too many thoughts about this. It's helping me wait for the dub to come out

Such good ideas though, omg. I'm thinking and more is coming to me for this, it's such a good prompt. There's so many ways it could go!

But for now...

Law had not intended to save you when he came to Punk Hazard. He had a plan, one that would hopefully bring down this Devil Fruit factory and help him get his revenge, it didn't include meeting and getting to know you little by little in the time he was there. You had run into Law by accident when trying to escape, making him curious about what was going on.

You look scared when you first run into him, having turned a corner abruptly and colliding with the young doctor, asking him for help.

"Please, help me get out of here!"

"What?"

There's a fear in your eyes he doesn't like seeing, while you grip his coat tightly and plead with Law to save you, somehow. He knew Caesar was conducting experiments, obviously with the SMILE fruit and everything, but he didn't know the extent, and now he's more curious seeing you.

You look perfectly fine and healthy, there doesn't seem to be a reason why you should be afraid of anything. Most of the people that Law has seen through the lab are willing participants, or they've been bribed by Caesar with something for him to use them. You don't seem to fit either bill, unless there's something hidden that even he can't see.

But his powers should tell him, right? The brief scan he does shows nothing is wrong, though he can see some kind of drugs in your system. He'd have to do his own testing to figure out what they are and what they're for, but you're interrupted by Monet a moment later.

"Oh, I see you've met our oldest patient, doctor."

Law's concerns grow when you immediately remove your hands from him, looking towards the ground with more fear than before. Monet explains you'd been sick with a highly deadly virus three years ago before she and Caesar took you in, away from your home and family, and have been working ever since to find a cure. He watches as you back away bit by bit, turning more into yourself and apologizing, before turning around and running back where you'd come from. When he asks Monet at the illness was, she beats around the bush and doesn't give a straight answer, Law knows something is wrong with this situation but he's not in a position to figure out what it is.

Not until the Straw Hats and the Navy show up anyway. The distractions provided by them allow him the time to find you again, though you still seem fearful of him. He holds his hands up where you can see them, making you tilt your head.

"I won't hurt you. I won't touch you at all. I can use my powers to see about your illness."

"...why bother? I'm gonna die anyway."

How strange, to hear words he'd said so long ago said to his own face, but in such a different situation. After Law explains how his Devil Fruit powers work, you consent to letting him do a proper Scan, and you're confused when he tells you there's no sign of any illnesses in your body. He still sees those drugs in your system, but he doesn't have the time to check what they are yet.

"We're going to destroy this place. You'll have to come with me if you want answers from Caesar."

You really don't know if you should trust him or not, he hasn't given you much of a reason not to apart from being a doctor, like Caesar and Monet had claimed to be. Your voice is shaky when you ask Law if he promises to find out what happened, and when he does, you're almost crying as you nod. Law lets you take his hand, once you've calmed down and agreed to go with him, he starts to lead you to a safer area.

"I won't let anything happen to you, all right? Not until we get you the answers you need."

For some reason, you decide to trust him.

Here's some more reasons to hate sanji because people ignore his weirdo behavior

Vivi ( she was 16 pre time skip, Sanji was 19 ) , Shirahoshi ( 16 post time skip, Sanji was 21 ), pudding (she's 16 and he 21)

(How he treats women in general is creepy, and how treats women he doesn't find attractive is rude and insulting most of the time)

The weird scene in film Z where Sanji fantasizes about young Nami " growing into her body '" is another weird one too (I know the movies aren't Canon but still)

Des Demonas — Apocalyptic Boom! Boom! (In the Red)

A late year banger comes from DC’s Des Demonas, a band of friends powered by squalling farfisa, pummeling drums and political rage, poetically expressed. “The Duke Ellington Bridge” is one of 2024’s very best songs, wheeling in on a blare of organ, pursuing a rock ‘n roll grove that circles rather than progresses. It would be very, very good, just in musical terms, but the words are top-notch as well. Atop it all, one Jacky “Cougar” Abok reads the scriptures in a Kenyan cadence, unspooling visionary rants about all the things he is (“a necromancer,” “a black dictator,” a “head tranquilizer,” a “D.C. sniper”).

This is only Des Demonas’ second full length, following a 2017 self-titled debut, but its members have long histories in DC punk, Abok in the Foul Swoops and Thee Lolitas, guitarist Mark Cisneros in various Kid Congo outfits, the Make-Up and the superlative post-punk Hammered Hulls. Paul Vivaree, whose wailing Farfisa is so integral to this band’s sound, plays with Benjy Ferree and drummer Matt Gatwood is a member of Two Inch Astronaut. So, while not a supergroup on the level of, say, the Hard Quartet, these are seasoned hands, and you can hear it in how tightly, hard and selflessly they play.

You can hear all manner of classic punk influences in these songs, the dub-touched anthemry of the Clash in “Fascist Discotheque,” reeling Steve Nieves’-style keyboards in “Restructuring,” the stinging offbeats of two-tone ska in “Angola.” The title cut slithers ominously a la certain African Head Charge cuts, resounding with thunderous bass. Rhythms clank and groan ponderously, then cut whip switch turns, gloriously heavy, furiously agile.

Still no matter how great the rest of the band is—and make no mistake, it is pretty great—the spotlight rightly falls on Abok. His rough-cut poetry comes in an incendiary stream, touching on arts, politics, activism and revolutionary economics. He spits out phrases, howls disjointedly and sometimes hazards a wandering melody in an acrobatic vocal performance.  It goes pretty fast, and a lyric sheet would be helpful to decrypt the words, but even snatches caught on the fly illuminate and provoke.

These songs careen wrecklessly, bouncing off music history and rebounding to the present. Song titles nod to Arthur Lee, Miles Davis, Elvis and Duke Ellington, bringing the rage and resistance and creative resilience of the past into the now, where it slaps as hard as it ever has. Fucking A.

Uneggpected Development

Honestly it was hard to know where to start so let's start with Silly Boy and his silly face interacting with Robonosuke. Yes of course I'm going to keep calling him that but don't worry, we'll get to the actual heavy Wano callbacks later. This is a weird chapter...because it feels like we're hurtling swiftly towards an ending to Egghead now. Our giant robot friendo is a big part of that.

As we're blasting off the big robo seems to be gearing up for a huge attack. Maybe a self-destruction. A concept echoed nowhere else in this chapter and certainly not anywhere recently. But you do have this moment that reminds me of Zunisha. Luffy hearing what is likely the Voice of All Things emanating from Robonosuke. Dude is finally ready to rock and roll, looks like it'll time out well with the final notes of the broadcast. You'll see this theme pop up again here, I really want to see the next note before I think too heavily about that but we'll have a lot more to talk about that through the lens of...

Atlas pulls a move we've seen out of other Vegapunks before and seems set to become yet another casualty of this arc. I don't care too much about that for this review, not because I don't like it but because of what Atlas does first. Slamming Lilith into the deck and turning off some kind of tracking device York was using. Which...type of thing that would have been nice to come up at some point earlier but I'll give at least a chapter or two to see if there's like, a reason they didn't do that earlier.

It's obviously Lilith I care about. We could move very quickly out of here into the next arc. Like, you could literally do it in one chapter. Robonosuke go boom cutting off Vegpaunk from giving too much of a reveal, Coup de Burst off into the sunset, cue the newspapers. Lilith is hanging around for whatever reason as a tie to the next. Lilith even can relatively quickly become an off-ramp for what I've seen winding out of Wano through Vivi, Bonney, & Stussy this arc. She was a first impression of the arc too, even had some little quirks with that building off of Kiku last arc who did the same with Pudding who did the same with Rebecca. Speaking of though, pay attention to the title.

Two problems. One that leaves a lot untied. Like, much more than Wano. I suppose you could fill in a bunch of stuff after the exit about Lilith, but the reason that idea ever worked at all for Kiku was because of her personality. Stussy's someone who can believably pull that too, we even just saw her do something like that with her talking to Kaku. Lilith is like, the opposite of mysterious. There was nothing like a mini arc introducing you as cryptic and guarded or juggling loyalties all Egghead. York was the one who played really well into that aspect of things. Lilith is even after Atlas right here giving you the self-sacrifice and how about that light/dark framing with the different expressions up there!

Two, as it stands now there's still no real "point" to the story. This is all literally happening while Vegapunk Prime dumps everything he knows about the big lore, of course he isn't going to get too close because that's Robin's story. So I doubt Lilith has some extra info to add. And of course...a lot of things have flared up for a couple of chapters and faded as quickly as they did. I don't think we're too far from the end, but I still have that feeling this is a little misleading. There was one last aspect of this chapter that makes me wonder about just a little more getting us there:

It's the combination of Clover's denial of his name to survive as well as this late-game Punk Hazard flashback. It all feels so, so Kaido all of a sudden. Maybe it helps or hurts that I'm watching through dub Wano's end with sweetie but this scene feels like such a blend of Kaido, King, & Momonosuke right now. Which is a really weird discordant note. And one that casts that shadow over Vegapunk again.

That's actually the big thing to me. The broadcast has crackled but now its coming to an end. Watch the next few chapters closely. Egghead could end in the next chapter or two, but I wouldn't be shocked if it had another volume in it to get a little weird.

Good evening/morning! I have a question. I recently saw your post about how you got into One Piece and coming from a person who has tried multiple times but have been unsuccessful...

What helps you get through the episodes? Because the major thing that is holding me back is the fact that it's over 1,000 episodes.

so i got over the initial hump of like starting cuz i was trapped on a plane with nothing else to do so i was like man let me try this for real so many people love it and honestly once you get invested it’s really hard to stop

that being said - arcs take a bit to set up and get extremely complex so there are like lulls, i would say skypeia and thriller bark are the biggest offenders imo and some parts of punk hazard got a bit tiring, even dressrosa because it was SO complex

the main thing to know is that the plot and the storytelling mechanisms are so good that even the ‘boring’ parts are important

the characters are also extremely intriguing even tho so many of them look genuinely bonkers and even a background goofy ass side character can end up coming back later. the relationships between characters are really interesting to watch as well, even subtle things

i watched most of the episodes in dub with dual screens and like early on for example i would play genshin (just do comms) or fields of mistria so it’s like low effort external stimulation so i could pay attention still but like not feel like i was just sitting idly

or like i’d watch while folding clothes cuz ngl i have trouble concentrating on just Watching something

sometimes i doodle too

but for a non-freak, the show is definitely engaging on its own and I would say tbqh there’s a lot more going on thematically than similarly loved shows like mha or hq if i’m completely honest

the most important thing to remember is there’s no like Rush to get through episodes, people have been talking about one piece for literally 25 years and people still make new content every day. you can watch as much or as little as you want, as fast as you want and take breaks whenever

i think the issue these days (not to say you’re implying this but in general) is that people rush to be involved in or create content when stuff is still ‘hot’ because of this weird influencer vibe being applied to fandoms these days but the truth is if the media itself is interesting and deep, it won’t fall off over time

people will continue to pick it up and enjoy it every day, much like me picking up a series in 2024 that’s been airing since 1999

so enjoy yourself!! and if you think it’s boring drop it any time!

Final marks? Dub Doffy is sexy as hell, he climbed to #1 Dub, Law is now #2 bcs of that but he’ll probably drop to #3 cus Dub Cora sounds amazing 😍😍😍

Dub Doffy is definitely the sort that would fool me. Sub Doffy I’m on my guard from the get-go cus of his voice cus it’s so deep and confident, commanding and just overwhelming it tells you “I’m a god, get on your knees.”, but Dub Doffy is more like “Come on, darling, won’t you make me happy and get on your knees for me?” and both are PERFECT. Dub Doffy captures that charming essence that people get tricked by. By people, I mean ME.

I will say when Sub Doffy softens his voice (and it happens) he is charming as well and WOULD trick me too. Whichever situation, it’s a lose-lose for me, is all I’m saying.

Meet Concordia!!

concordia, known by her alias " scales of justice ", is an ex-marine judge used to "see" the "sins" of portgas d. ace by the world government. after the fight between akainu and aokiji, she judged the winner and after realising the winner was akainu, she defected from the marines and had hid on punk hazard since, avoiding the government. since, the government dubbed her " liar of the past " just in case she tried ro relay the truth to the people.

during and after the events of punk hazard, she had asked for a ride since she couldn't leave the island entirely by herself to which luffy agreed to the crew's dismay. although first wary of her, they saw she posed no threat to them specifically, although she did seem to pose a threat to herself the most with her "daydreams".

after the events of dressrosa, luffy officially asked her for her decision whether or not she wishes to join his crew or if she wanted to stay on dressrosa and she agreed to his request to join.

her devil fruit (i didnt give it a japanese name Yet) is the "past-past" fruit which is a paramarcia type devil fruit that affects her vision for the most part but also does control other parts. as her devil fruit is awakened, these are the abilities :

- seeing into the past (passive; controlled by seastone items to turn "off" her devil fruit)

- seeing and interacting with ghosts of the past (the dead, or the area of how it used to look like in the past)

- (through touch and concentration only) seeing into people's pasts, their lives and pains

- (awakened) speaking with the ghosts

- (awakened) trapping someone briefly in a past memory (duration: 3 minutes)

- (awakened) using her present surroundings and turning them into their past form (duration: 5 minutes)

additional skills :

- 7 blades of urumi master

- advanced observation haki (mostly used to keep herself in the present)

- close combat and swordsmanship skills

additional information :

- she's in her 40s (around 43-45)

- she is bisexual fem oriented

- no one is sure what her specie is. luffy saw her and thought she looked cool. people of punk hazard assumed she was one of the law experiments due to her four arms. she's purple and has star shaped freckles all over her body (small size, in shapes of asterisk stars)

- she cannot cook for herself, often ends up in a past moment during and hurts herself by accident

- although she is quite tall, she is very careful with those smaller than her (especially chopper)

- she sees ace's ghost around luffy.

- the government found her and experimented on her as a child (she does not remember this part), used her well until adulthood. she was supposed to "judge" nico robin during water 7, however plans changed with events of blackbeard saying he will bring a high bounty for the position of a warlord of the sea; she was transferred last minute to marineford.

- concordia adores sweets but cannot have many or she will pass out

- out of the straw hats, she enjoys sanji's, chopper's, brook's, luffy's and robin's and jinbe's presences the most. she didn't go to whole cake island out of respect for the crew and wanting to be on the part of the crew to take zoro into wano. she feels as if nami might not like her so she shies away from her.

- she gives govermental input on things the crew asks about the goverment they need to know

- her official role in the straw hat crew is the judge (luffy made a suggestion of " if you already were a judge, why dont u just keep being one here??? " and she was like " oh,,, i didnt even think of that " )

When it comes to One Piece, I mostly prefer the dub. It's surprisingly good for a dub! But when it comes to Caesar Clown, I have to say I’ve always preferred the Japanese voice. Ryūsei Nakao's portrayal is just so...cunty 👌. I might be biased because Frieza was one of my longest hyperfixations.

Jerry Jewell does a fantastic job too, mostly when it comes to comedic moments, particularly after Punk Hazard.

I started rewatching PH when it hit Netflix but this time in Japanese, particularly the Caesar scenes, and I love it, it's a new experience.

Hi there! Your recent enthusiasm for One Piece convinced me to give it a shot again, after a very long time. I started with that new live-action one, which was very enjoyable! And now I'm thinking to move on to the anime.

The thing is, the last time I attempted to watch it (a decade or so ago), I became intimidated by the amount of episodes and stopped. And now there are so many more!

All that to ask, do you have any favorite arcs/episodes? Or, if not favorite, ones you consider very important to the enjoyment of the series?

No pressure to answer, naturally. And let me just say your excitement and enjoyment of the series has been fun to see second-hand. 😁

There are SO many episodes!! It's definitely intimidating. I gave it a brief try before the Live Action came out, wasn't sure I wanted to invest that time and gave up. But after watching and LOVING the Live Action, I've tried again and really enjoy it!

That being said, my method of getting through long TV shows is just multi-tasking. I watch the dub (It's good!) and am usually doing a craft while watching or sometimes scrolling through tumblr, etc.

Other than that method, I know there is a fan-made cut of the show that removes a lot of the filler/redundancy and shrinks the run time significantly called One Pace, that gets recommended a lot, but I haven't tried it personally.

It is a bit of a hard show to skip around, imo, because a lot of the fun of it is the characters and their interactions and how they grow, plus a lot of minor characters appear in one arc and pop-up again later.

BUT if you were to eliminate episodes, here are what I'd consider the most important arcs, though I'm no means an expert.

-There are roughly 100 episodes of filler you can definitely skip, though that doesn't get rid of that much.

-If you want to skip what the Live Action covered, you can start with episode 48 and the Loguetown arc (48-53).

-The next few arcs introduce some minor characters we see again, but the next major arc that introduces a new Strawhat member is the Drum Island arc (78-91).

-It's long, but I would definitely recommend watching the next arc, Alabasta to get to know several reoccurring characters and the next Strawhat (92-130).

-It also goes on a while but the Skypiea arc introduces some important lore of the show (153-195)

-It's filler, but I ADORED the G-8 arc (196-206). Just funny hi-jinks that didn't feel like filler at all

-There's a few arcs in between you could skip but DEFINITELY watch Water 7 (227-263) and Ennies Lobby (264-312). There are parts that go on a bit long, but this was my favorite part of the show that I've seen so far and I know Water 7 is the favorite arc of many fans of the show. It condenses a lot of the best elements of it and is so fun to watch

-Thriller Bark DOES introduce the 9th Straw Hat, you can watch those episodes (337 and 338) but after that, I would go forward to Sabaody Archipelago (385-405) because it introduces some major plot points and characters and I feel like the positives of the Thriller Bark arc are outweighed by the negatives, imo.

-Impel Down has a lot of fun characters, but could be skipped and you could move onto Marineford (457-489). Definitely watch that to understand the story moving forward

-Post War Arc (490-516) is good to watch for Luffy backstory and what all the characters were doing during the time skip

-It doesn't seem like Fishman Island (523-574) really impacts the plot as a whole? (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong) So I think you could skip it.

-Punk Hazard (579-625) is fun and does set up the next arc (Dressrosa) so I might recommend watching that

I am watching Dressrosa (~Around episode 665 iirc) now so I can't speak past that! If anyone else sees this post, feel free to weigh in!

Wano Kid post pt. 2 before I am forced to go to work

Then after being humiliated he and Killer get tortured!! Thank you Luffy for getting really pissed off on their behalf. Seriously though, the two of them kind of go through hell. They really do.

We know Killer can speak, he did so when he was fighting Zoro as Kamazo, but for this entire scene he's so emotional he can't do a damn thing but laugh hysterically, and Kid still doesn't know why. But he sure as hell doesn't give up on him. Also I think this scene hit way harder in the dub.

I can't do this myself.

I also can't show emotions like a normal person.

He's so much more calm and determined than he was before. And that's what works.

He was able to talk Killer back to himself, if just a bit.

And of course, he seems to go back to his usually haughty self once they're free.

But for a moment, I think he was genuinely entertaining the idea of trying to work together. But he got burned too badly by Apoo and Hawkins, and he blames himself for that.

Even if he wanted to at this point, he wouldn't. At least, not outwardly.

Of course he shows up at Onigashima. And it turns out that for all that snarling, he plays pretty damn well with others.

Post-Wano, he doesn't take that lesson to heart and it costs him dearly, but I really think that Elbaf will be the arc he learns that lesson. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a turnaround from here, and he's going to be the one to finally ask Luffy to form an alliance, like Law did at Punk Hazard.
