what I like to call Separation Au or the universe where Agatha is ready to break bones at all times only Sophie makes it to the school. It's a lot of fun to consider when you realize without Agatha, Sophie can't do more than psychological torment and emotional manipulation - and that's something the schools' inhabitants excel at!

Wait but waittttt. She going through the woods alone means she is getting practical knowledge from nowhere - she is winging it and finding everything by trial and error - if she gets administrated into the school she would crush it in Surviving Fairytales.

But! More importantly! She gets to make acquaintances along the way. I really want her to vibe with some random witch... or a man-wolf. Or a deer. I dunno - she thinks she is hallucinating because she kinda understands the animals? And ooh! The wish-granting debacle.

How far away is the school from Galvadon? How quick are the... bone-birds?? (sorry, forgot the spelling and the name) Does Agatha get lost? How long does it take her to reach the school?

I have this plot in my head now, ideas and dialouges, but will i actually do it? idk so here's a couple sketches i did, what i imagined what happens at the aftermath of the kidnapping

pale october twlight: this was written for 2020 sgetober. there are some goodies in there, and theres a lot, so some of it has to appeal to someone! various aus, ships, concepts and characters.

before the winds of mistrust: nicphie oneshot, angsty. i'm so proud of this one, listen. "Cool, unflappable Nicola who never lets anyone or anything under her skin and who’s been under Sophie’s since the day they exchanged words." god i miss them. this was the stepping off pad for my oneshots, aka

aka the rare ships. these, despite being of varying quality, they usually have comprehensive character studies and some funny bits. you're bound to like something here.

glowing dim as an ember: such a cool au. agaster forbidden romance, dancing, childhood friends.

witchy chicken soup for the soul: a gamechanger. this au (modern magic) is a blast and i still love reading this one. beatrix is really fun to write for, and this was the best way to discover their dynamic. anadil/beatrix changed lives guys i'm so serious. i haven't been the same.

the spirit of exploration: chaddick/ravan, set during AWWP. have you noticed that these are all ever/never. well now you have. as i said in my notes "it is quite possible the everboys had 'college girl phases' during awwp and thats the basis of the whole fic". yeah.

white heart (made it red): THE FIRST ANADIL/AGATHA FIC, written for meg <3 an au, anadil character study, and anadil and agatha exploration. these two are actually so very very interesting and writing them was very fun. give me that anadil character baby

chivalry is on fire: post tlea, chaddick ravan beatrix and reena focused. gives the students a bit more depth, they play pranks and reminsce and make promises. good stuff, i love all four of them.

just good stuff. some of the last things i wrote before the movie came out.

an acknowledgment of the pain: tagatha, set during tlea. a reconciliation between tedros and guinevere through the lenses of a biracial tedros. it means a lot to me and helps their dynamic out a bit.

the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams: a princess mononoke au. unfinished,but still a worthwhile read imo. i DO plan on finishing it someday, promise 😔

Rhodonite and Obsidian: I legitimately still think to this day this is one of the best things I've ever written. keian multi-chapter fic, in which I dive into Kei, his family, his relationship with Rhian, and his fate. you guys miss kate pumpkinpaperweight has this bookmarked. If that's not an assurance of quality, i don't know what is.

TPK Q&A: Author and Editor Edition with @pumpkinpaperweight

Questions for Kate from Crystal

1.) What were your first thoughts of the first few chapters?

Was nice to see some of Nicola in Gavaldon bc that’s something we never saw for ourselves in the series, anything about Nicola’s past was either mentioned in passing or through another character, so good to see it directly! Also appreciate that we get right back into School stuff, I appreciate it not messing around too much lol.

2.) What drew you to the story?

I always like fics where people pick a side character and give them their dues, and Nicola was so damn hard done by in the series that I really think she deserves a fic or several with her as the main focus! Also I like seeing people play around in the sandbox of the school, there’s a lot of potential there with talents and so on.

3.) Do you have a favorite character in TPK so far?

Very fond of Lakim! Also not exactly a new character but I like Professor Espada’s increasein prominence, that’s fun since he’s not around much in the books.

4.) Do you have a favorite chapter in TPK?

Chapter 7 was nice; I really like extra worldbuilding and trivia about SGE stuff so all the historical bits you made up about other kingdoms were super interesting. Also the Circus of Talents was interesting to see what everyone was competing with, I find talents really hard to come up with but there was a massive variety which was really fun.

5.) If you had to choose one of the special talents shown in TPK, which would you choose and why?

Etain’s talent to manipulate shadows of others to attack them was super cool, really liked that one! Spooky. Realistically I think I would probably actually manage to blow myself up somehow but it sounds cool in theory lol.

6.) What else would you like to see explored in the TPK series?

Anything further than first year is of interest to me, since no one often gets past that! The internships and stuff could be really good to play around with.

7.) Any final thoughts for Crystal or the audience?

Enjoyed editing this, thank you!! Really enjoyed the creativity w the talents and backstories and worldbuilding, the type of thing I always go in for, so great to see!

Questions for Crystal:

Have you been planning on writing this for a long time, or was it a more spontaneous thing?

 TPK was the combination of my desire for Nicola to have a story of her own and a dream that introduced me to Lakim and his backstory.

How did you come up with the OCs for this fic? Or are they previous characters you already had?

 If you would believe it most of the Odd Evers came from dreams I had around the time I contemplated writing TPK

How have you found writing a multi-chapter fic, since they’re notorious for being a bit difficult? 

I would say it was of medium difficulty. I find writing papers much harder and they have outlines!

Who’s your favourite of your OCs? (if you can pick!)

 Lakim and Natasha would be tied for me. Lakim because he is everything I wanted to be represented as a black boy in this world. He is caring, loyal, expressive and fully enjoys his interests even if some would say it’s “girly” he would say “and what’s wrong with that?” Natasha is a lot like me in many ways. She’s reserved and knowledgeable but when she’s excited she’ll be so loud most people would be surprised how high her voice can be.

What’s something in the future you’d like to explore in the SGE world / the Woods? Could be a place or a concept or another character, anything. 

I’m setting up to thoroughly explore the politics of the Woods because I feel it wasn’t well utilized in the series. This question has a lot of room for me to give spoilers but what I can say is TPK holds quite a few secrets to Lakim’s past.

Are there other fandoms you’d like to write fic for in the future? If not, are there other SGE fics you’d wanna do?

I’m actually planning to post original works through ao3 just to get practice. When the PJO series comes out I’ll probably write short stories for it. I would love to write some Tagatha stories, especially ones that tie into TPK.

What were the most difficult (and easiest!) bits of writing TPK?

The most difficult bits would have to be the descriptions and dialogue. The descriptions were very hard for me to put in words though I knew exactly what I wanted to describe. A lot of times, Kate would edit chapters I wrote at night and I would be so embarrassed by it. The dialogue was hard because I really wanted to make sure it was understandable and sounded like something each character would say.

Any other comments or things you wanna say that you’ve not had a chance to?

There is far more TPK in store as the story continues the Odd Evers will enter their second year at the School for Good and Evil. If you have The Ever Never Handbook that will give you some ideas of what to expect but don’t get too comfortable as a story comes with quite a few twists.

The Definitive Guide to the ages of the SGE characters (PLOT SPOILERS)

Part 1: Ages of the main characters

So I saw @sabrinaofwoodsbeyond​ and @pumpkinpaperweight​ trying to deduce the ages of the characters from textual clues in the books, and here’s my take + extensive proof.

Sophie and Agatha were both seventeen (17) years old in TLEA (Book 3). 

Sophie’s mother died five years before Sophie was kidnapped to the School for Good and Evil (SfGaE) in SGE (Book 1). 

“Now [Stefan] wanted to marry that beast. Five years after her mother’s death, it wouldn’t be seen as improper or callous. ” -- Book 1, The School for Good and Evil Chapter 2. “The Art of Kidnapping” 

We know from August Sader’s revelation in the Brig towards the end of TLEA that Sophie’s mother was still alive when Sophie was ten (10) years old.

“[...]the scene pivoted to Vanessa standing with young, ten-year-old Sophie at the kitchen window, each of them blond and gorgeous, watching Stefan playing with two young boys in Honora’s front yard.” -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 33. “An Unexpected History Lesson”

Hence, Sophie  was fifteen (15) years old in Book 1, when she was kidnapped, and was eleven (11) years old (too young to be taken) during the last kidnapping four years before.

“Four years ago, [Sophie] had seen the same desperation to avoid the curse, but it wasn’t her turn then. The School Master took only those past their twelfth year, those who could no longer disguise as children. -- Book 1, The School for Good and Evil, Chapter 1. “The Princess and the Witch” 

“The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. The ages were just as fickle; one could be sixteen, the other fourteen, or both just turned twelve.” -- Book 1, The School for Good and Evil, Chapter 2. “The Art of Kidnapping” 

Now, Sophie could not have been sixteen (or older) in Book 1 because then she would have been twelve during the last kidnapping and thus old enough to be taken by the School Master for that round. 

Neither could have Sophie been fourteen (or younger), because Vanessa, who had been dead for five years, was still alive when Sophie was ten.

Further evidence that Sophie was seventeen in TLEA (Book 3):

“ ‘I only saw your mother once or twice in town when I was really young,” said Agatha. “But I remember she was beautiful, like a gold-haired nymph.’ ‘It’s been seven years, so I can’t even picture her face anymore,” said Sophie. “The more I try to remember it, the more it shape-shifts, like I’m trying to recapture a dream. But she didn’t leave the house much. Didn’t have any friends either except Honora, until . . . well, you know.’ “ -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 25. ”The Scorpion and the Frog” 

Also, as of TLEA, more than two years had elapsed since Sophie and Agatha were kidnapped and sorted into their respective Schools, so Sophie would have turned seventeen at any rate if she was fifteen in SGE.

“Two years ago, the School Master had put her in the school where she belonged—the school she was meant to one day rule.

[...]

Two years ago, the Circus Crown dangled above this spot the same way, awaiting the winning student of the first-year talent contest.”

“That night more than two years ago, when the School Master took [Agatha] and Sophie from Gavaldon . . . he’d dragged them into the Endless Woods, where a stymph hatched out of a black egg, snatched them in its jaws, and flown them off to their fateful schools.” -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 30. ”Apologies and Confessions”

Agatha is exactly the same age as Sophie (actually, a few minutes younger than her, if you want to be precise) as Sader revealed in The Tale of Callis & Vanessa that Vanessa had given birth to both of them at the same time, but had taken only Sophie home & abandoned Agatha.

Tedros turned sixteen (16) years old one day after the end of the events of TLEA, that is two days after the conclusion of the New-Old War, and six months before the events of QfG (Book 4). 

“[...] Tedros puffed. ‘Rescue Sophie, kill the School Master, take back Excalibur, free the other students, and you and I go to Camelot in time for my sixteenth birthday, and coronation as king.’“ -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 3. ”The New or the Old”

“‘Coronation’s tomorrow, which means they paint the royal portrait, which stays up for the next thousand years. Sorry if I want to look my best,’ Tedros groused.” -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 35. ”Never After Ever”

So on his and Agatha’s scheduled wedding day, Tedros would have been sixteen-and-three quarters (16 3/4) years old... or technically still a minor by the legal standards of today’s Western countries. Agatha (and Sophie) would have been eighteen or very close to eighteen. 

“It had been six months since that day: the day of the coronation.

[…]

The wedding was still two months away.”

Rafal is a couple of-hundreds- or some-thousand-year-old (400--9999 y.o.) shapeshifting murderous pedophile who killed his brother and became School Master two hundred years before the start of the events of Book 1, SGE. He assumed the form of a sixteen-year-old (16 y.o.) youth to trick his way into Sophie’s affections. DO NOT SHIP HIM WITH SOPHIE. Or with anybody, really.

“[Rafal] certainly looks young, Sophie thought, peering at the lean, shirtless boy as he gazed out the tower window, bathed in faded sunlight. Sophie studied his hairless white skin and snug black breeches, his thick spiked hair the color of snow, his tight-veined arms, his glacier-blue eyes. . . . He didn’t look a day more than sixteen. And yet somewhere within this beautiful stranger was a soul older than sixteen—much, much older than sixteen.” -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 1. ”The Master and the Queen”  

“With each second, [Rafal] grew older and older, thousands of years old, screams of rage tearing from inside of him as his flesh boiled with heat. His clothes burned off of him, smoke spitting through his mummifying skin, until the School Master was unmasked at last, a naked corpse of blackened, hateful flesh.”  -- Book 3, The Last Ever After, Chapter 34. ”The War of All Things”
