why i don't like the netflix adaption of sge
i've watched the movie this weekend, and i have some thoughts to share:
the people in the village actually know about the school and the fairy tales. it's important because in the books it is one of the things that characterizes sophie the way she is. most kids have developed a fear of being selected for the school for good and evil, while sophie is anticipated to be kidnapped by the school master. she even bakes goods for him, feigns "good" demeanor, and discards all the protective mechanisms her father had constructed to keep her safe.
her father and to-be stepmother are portrayed inaccurately as well. they are simple, sane people. in the books, they never treat sophie really horrible. perhaps her father wanted a son instead of a daughter (we don't really find out if that is true or a part of sophie's broken worldview), but he still cares for her—he provides her with enough resources to do her strange make up routine every morning, he eats her gruesome food (yes, he complains, but not with an abusive tone at all, he just sounds tired of having to consume the vegan food he clearly hates), and he tries to prevent her from getting captured. and her stepmother is also a vaguely decent human being, and not a merciless, evil person.
the way sophie talks to people is very different. in the books, everything she did was to make her appear more "good", so she'd be taken to the school for good. she never actually had any motivation apart from her own wants. most people who watched the movie love sophie, but not because they think she is evil, but because they think that she is simply misunderstood. and in the book it's made extremely clear how false this is. sophie is jealous, cheats, manipulates, lies, finds joy in hurting others, kills, judges easily, only cares for her looks, feels no empathy or guilt, and rejects people who are trying to help her. and she doesn't do it because she is misunderstood and wants to find revenge/was taught to be that way/lived through a traumatic event. honestly, i find her pretty scary. book sophie would've killed movie sophie instantly.
agatha is also a point for me. first of all, her looks. and i'm not talking about the race of the actress (acting skills are what matters and she is a good actress), but about the way how they depicted her. agatha was supposed to look "hideous"—oily hair, watery eyes, grim face. people literally flinched before her in the books because of the way she looked (and treated herself accordingly.) but her movie version looks so pretty, and i mean that not in the objective way, but in the way that they didn't include the things that made her appear ugly in the books. they never let her grow and find out that she was always pretty, but nobody recognized it because she couldn't embrace her beauty. also, the thing about her being good is a thing. in the books we are thaught that regardless of her gruff, quiet, lonesome, and sorrowful personality, agatha still can be a good person. but in the movie she's just your average, nice teenage girl. there is no character depth. where is the mean, broken girl who seemed to hated everything, yet wanted to be good? where is the girl that wouldn't give up on sophie? where is the girl that always prioritized others? well, we never really got to see her in the movie.
agatha and tedros' relationship is an insta-love story instead of a slow burn. remember, in the books he hated her at first and literally wanted to kill her until like over 300 pages into the book. just saying. and in the movie, they are all nice to each other, like no? sophie was the one tedros had a crush on at first because he though that she was his would-be princess. (there was also no character depth on his side. he never overcomes his prejudices.)
they revealed stuff way too early and made the two female teachers enemies instead of friends. (also, why is jesper playing the evil gremlin?) that disappointed me because i loved their dynamic in the books.
all the little yet extremely important things were missing... the lessons yuba, professor sader's whole existence, the test about "being good" that agatha aces, so many scenes with the never girls, the ever girls being more evil than some nevers, all the lore.
it was not a bad movie (it's okay, i guess?), but it's a horryfing adaptation of the books.

Gone back to reading SGE (I'm part way through book 4) and look,,, I know this is a controversial topic in the fandom and I am mayhaps going to be swinging at a hornets nest, but this is literally the only fandom where I (and please hear me out) understand the incest shippers
Because like, Soman does queer-code the fuck out of Sophie and Agatha. And yes, canonically they are sisters! However, he doesn't write them as sisters. They didn't grow up as sisters, hell, they didn't even know until the end of book three. And even after that point, he still writes them with most queer-baity shit!
He is constantly having other characters make jokes or comments about how they're girlfriends, or they were "just off kissing somewhere" (Hort legit says this in book four). That's not how people talk about sisters! At all! And Sophie and Agatha never even bother to address it. Like, sorry, but if someone made a joke about me and my sister dating or, god forbid, having snuck off to make out? You best believe I would be gagging, like wtf?? Who says that??
And it's not like the others don't know, because ~everyone's read the Tale of Sophie and Agatha~! So why does he write them like this! Right from the first book, they've been in this weird in-between of "they're fighting over a boy" but they also have this... weirdly fruity tension. Sophie's dance with Agatha at the No Ball, saying Agatha is "hers" or some shit ("to get at Tedros" but like... weird flex Soph), Agatha saving Sophie with True Love's Kiss... right on the mouth. I do not kiss my sister on the mouth. And yeah, they didn't know at the time, but like, Soman (theoretically) should have known, and it's a weird Luke-and-Leia-esque vibe to put in there. Throughout every book, there are a thousand little moments—I mean the whole three-way true love thing! Because yes, you can make the argument that true love doesn't have to be romantic..... except everyone else keeps treating it like it's only a romance thing. Also, if it doesn't have to be romantic, then why can there only be one???
So yeah, idk, I just feel like there are so many other plot points in this series that make less than no sense and it constantly contradicts itself anyway so... if people wanna say "fuck that" to the sister reveal and ignore it in favour of so much canon queer-coding then... yeah. Not opposed

Missing out on sleep because my brain keeps me awake with ideas for my next attempt at a long-fic, no matter how hard I tell it to shhhh...
I'm not even sure it's going to come to anything, I've never written a supernatural romance with a hint of a murder mystery before, but my mind just WON'T shut up about it.
It's all about working out the kinks, removing plot holes, figuring out the lore (omg the lore!), and then just sitting down to write the damn story itself!
Why brain why!?
Anyway, here's a sneak peak...
“Did you actually just eat that?” she asked, looking between the candy bowl and Agatha, an unreadable expression on her face. Agatha quite reminded Leonora of a toddler sometimes, putting everything and anything in her mouth without thinking, giving no thought whatsoever to the consequences.
“I did,” Agatha coughed then, her face twisting in on itself, because of, what Leonora could only guess, was the sweets bitter after taste making itself known. Regardless, Agatha crunched the sweet between her teeth, “God, that tastes awful!”
Leonora rolled her eyes wondering why Agatha didn’t just spit it out.
“Unsurprising,” Leonora tutted and re-arranged the rings on her fingers, “It’s a fertility booster infused with Witches Broom. It’s supposed to look appetising to make it easier to swallow, but that doesn’t make it pleasant.”
Agatha’s eyes bulged in her skull, “Why on earth would you leave them out unlabelled?”
Leonora made a big show of pulling out a small piece of black card from thin air, the words Sweet Fertility written in white pen on one side, along with the sweets effects and a price. She nestled it between the candy pieces in the bowl.
“To teach sweet-toothed shop assistants a lesson!” Leonora reprimanded, “This is a magic shop, you can’t just put anything in your mouth without checking what it is first! That’s rule number one!”
“I thought rule number one was ‘don’t touch anything,’”
#dovesso#leonora lesso#fanfiction#school for good and evil#agatha sge#AU#supernatural romance with a hint of a murder mystery is in the works#hopefully I'll see it through and not just abandon it halfway through

I've been reading the School for Good and Evil trilogy for the past week and I am just absolutely baffled by the books. I'm not certain if its bad writing or maybe I'm just not the target audience but Sophie is the most unsympathetic character I've ever read. Since the first book when Agatha and Sophie were introduced I was so confused on how the two could be friends. It seemed obvious to me that Sophie was a manipulative and mean friend to Agatha, and we were just being told they are friends without actually showing us why they are. Maybe thats the whole point, maybe Sophie is meant to be a bad friend and Agatha is just horribly naive because Sophie is her first real friend, but I'm on the third book now and it still feels like its pushing a narrative that Sophie can be Good and is someone you'd want to be around. She just seems like the most selfish, self-serving manipulative character I've ever seen written, and she's still convinced SHE deserves Tedros and that Agatha should be the one alone. Yet, I obviously have to be missing something because everytime i look for other opinions on these books It's people talking about Sophie and Agatha's friendship, so obviously there has to be some redemption for her , right? I've not yet finished the 3rd book yet, only having just reached the point where Agatha tells Tedros to go with Sophie alone for the next two days and I can only groan in annoyance because its like Agatha can't simply explain how she feels to Sophie. Honestly, I don't want to see Sophie redeemed. I want Agatha to finally tell her off and grow a backbone, but I know how unlikely that is. Sadly, I do want to see how the series will end, so I will be finishing this book and probably the next two as well, but I am losing my marbles. I'm really hoping i'll finish the third book and look back on this post and laugh at what I was missing, but i just dont know what they could add the would make me like Sophie's character
