Just a quick note to everyone sending me political asks: believe me, I get the desire for reassurance, I am honored that many people have found my commentary helpful, and I will occasionally pick and choose a few of them to answer. But those asks that are essentially requesting long theory-heavy or policy-breakdown or in-depth historical or comparative analysis etc., are probably less likely to get answered. This is absolutely nothing against any asker and as I said, I am super flattered that you want to hear my take on This Shitshow. However, I too am in a place of needing to conserve myself and limit the time I spend in this headspace, and... yeah.
I am but an old and tired historian on the internet, this is a lot of voluntary extra work for me at a time when I'm already running low overall, and I will have to choose when and how I engage with the topic. It's going to be another long-ass and difficult four years and we need to all make choices about how to expose ourselves to that landscape and what we do with it. So yeah. I will still be around, of course, and I will do my best to reassure and explain as far as I am able, but if you sent something and don't get an answer, please don't take it personally. The spoons are low for everyone and that's just gonna be the way it is for a while.
Much love.

I hate Justin McElroy for validating my lifelong fear of invisible ocean creatures in my pool with the ‘glass shark’ bit, because now every time I am in ANY body of water I have to act like I’m not afraid of Glass Shark so it can’t smell my very real fear

Gary things people often think are headcanons but are actually canon:
is a fallen angel (the canon also acknowledges this by associating him w the fallen star)
has cursive handwriting (only dubiously canon from concept art. but well)
has forged/faked papers (john's release form, lisa's letter, god knows what else)
is actually just kind of silly and over the top
obsession/stalker tendency w john. thats not even a shipping thing
Gary things that are in fact just my headcanons:
like everything you can think of about his appearance?
idk i dont have a lot of hcs that were mistaken for canon

2025 should really be the year you stop writing harry potter muses. stop buying merch, stop streaming the movies, but also STOP WRITING THE CHARACTERS!
anti-trans rhetoric is more widespread than ever and engaging in the fandom is not harmless like it would be if the author was dead. what continuing to engage with the fandom tells trans people is that your allyship has a stopping point, your allyship ends when it makes you uncomfortable, your allyship ends when you might lose something. now more than ever trans people need your allyship, they need to know they are safe in fandom spaces. whether you intend it or not, continuing to write your hp muses tells your mutuals and potential mutuals that you are not a safe person to write with. adding a trigger warning (hp tw/wizarding world tw) just tells your mutuals you're aware of the harm caused and don't care. no saying you're not affiliated with jk rowIing doesn't do shit because that bias, that racism and transphobia and anti-semitism is not something that you can take out of the media. it's in every single aspect of it. this post is phrased around trans allyship, but don't think it doesn't mean that continuing to write harry potter muses doesn't also tell your mutuals and potential mutuals that you're also okay with the racism and anti-semitism in the story.

hey, psa for if you get a ton of text spam, phishing, scams, etc.
help them network with like-minded individuals! first add them to a collective group chat, then block them. eventually they'll accidentally send messages to each other. i've been calling it "the big stew method."

When people tell you representation doesn’t matter, don’t tell them about how something as simple as a callus made me cry for an hour.
Thank you Megalobox, a simple character detail of rough calluses on the knuckles made me as a former boxer feel seen in a way nothing in media has.

Watch Megalobox, yeah it’s about boxing but it’s also about class struggle and passion over entertainment in an era of hyper commodification. The sequel is about addiction and racism.

To those sending me asks about Israel-Hamas: just to let you know that while I obviously have many things to say/thoughts about this topic, I am presently choosing not to do so. This whole thing is so radioactively toxic in all respects that I currently can't see much benefit in doing so, and I feel as if the social media pressure to Say Something on Everything generally leads nowhere good, especially right now.
I recognize that many people do come to my blog for takes on history, politics, current events, etc, and this is something I may eventually want to discuss (in one omnibus post, because I have no interest in engaging in wank about this, at all, whatsoever). But because that will require extreme precision and countless disclaimers due to the multitudes of bad-faith ways every single word can be interpreted and/or twisted, it's just not something I currently have the desire to do and/or put myself through. I do engage in a lot of substantial intellectual labor on here in terms of explaining and contextualizing things; I don't do it unless I want to, but that doesn't mean it isn't an effort, especially in situations like this one. My spoons/coping abilities are presently very low as it is, the situation itself will not be helped by whatever analytical framework I could venture to provide for it, and anything I could and/or would say would get me in trouble with someone determined to read it the worst possible way, since that's what, again, is going on right now with all of it.
As I said, I may decide to write a summary post eventually, and I will have to think carefully about when that time might be. In the meantime, you're certainly welcome to send said asks if you choose, but I'm presently making a conscious choice not to engage with it right now. Thanks for understanding!

So! Because people struggle to find my rules for some reason I did put a BRAND NEW ITERATION in my pinned post. It’s the basic write up I will add to them cause I know I forgot a few things. But yes. There they are, they will expand likely as time goes on and I remember more.

Gotten a few asks about this so let me clarify:
Atlantis the Lost Empire is NOT Nazi propaganda nor is it an endorsement of Nazi beliefs.
It's another example of a piece of media that has taken inspiration from a conspiracy theory which unfortunately has ties to the Nazis' obsession with proving their bonkers Aryan race theory.
The Nazis were obsessed with finding and creating ANY sort of historical/traditional link to validate their agenda, no matter how utterly ridiculous or entirely separate from reality that link was. They were obsessed with the mystical and the occult. Pseudo-science and pseudo-archaeology were their literal bread and butter.
In this instance, Plato's story of a sunken ancient city is not special for being co-opted for the Nazi's purposes. What has lead Atlantis to becoming a popular conspiracy theory in modern times is due in part to the steady popularization of pseudo-science as well as bad faith actors promoting a racist conspiracy theory as genuine fact.
The majority of conspiracy theories you hear about today actually have roots in fiction. For example, the Hollow Earth conspiracy theory finds it's origins from science fiction novels dating back to the 1800s. The Philadelphia Project can also trace its origins to a UFO writer who claims he was receiving secret confidential intel from a former US mariner. And yet there are are people who genuinely believe there is a secret world hidden in the center of the earth and that the US government was experimenting with and succeeded in creating a portal to another dimension.
So is the case with Atlantis. Atlantis: The Antediluvian World was written by Ignatius Donnelly in 1882 as a means to express his desires for a populist government and world. He was extremely misguided in his belief that Plato's story was factual and he employed the use of hyperdiffusion-a popular method used in countless conspiracy theories-to argue that all ancient societies were basically all descended from one even more ancient people.
Or in the Nazi's own terms: "An ancient master race."
Bad actors like Graham Hancock and Ancient Aliens further popularized the Nazi's conspiracy theory (as well as many others) and Donnelly's books by spreading mass disinformation across a global scale and we are all suffering for it.
As I've already stated before, Atlantis the Lost Empire takes superficial inspiration from the conspiracy theory in the same way that Stranger Things takes inspiration from the Montauk Project. Many popular sci-fi films, tv shows, books, and video games are littered with references and nods to conspiracy theories. Everything from Men in Black to The X Files to the SCP Foundation.
If you are interested in seeing how convincing conspiracy theories can get and their very real ability to destroy actual lives, I recommend watching American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders. It perfectly showcases how conspiracy theories can suck you in and how people can easily take advantage of you once they break down your ability to distinguish fiction from reality.
My only caveat with the documentary is that I really wish the creators had emphasized even more plainly to the audience that the Octopus Murders is an actual conspiracy theory instead of leaving the question somewhat open ended. Especially in regards to Danny Casolaro's death.
I would also highly recommend watching Milo Rossi aka miniminuteman's videos as his channel is dedicated solely to debunking various archaeological conspiracy theories as well as providing fascinating education on a variety of historical topics. I really cannot overstate how wonderful his Awful Archaeology series is.
I'm going to link a few of my favorites here:
youtube
This is the first of a multiseries debunking Graham Hancock's Ancient Apocalypse series.
youtube
This is Part 1 of 2 of him debunking one of the most notorious TikTokers who makes a living off of spreading mass disinformation.
I would be remiss not to mention Atun-Shei Film's amazing channel as well as Lady of the Library.
youtube
youtube
youtube
I would also recommend Kaz Rowe's channel as they provide stellar information on a wide variery of historical topics.
youtube
youtube
Tldr; Atlantis the Lost Empire and the films creators' did not set out to promote Nazi beliefs. They simply took inspiration from a popular conspiracy theory and made it something entirely unique and separate from the Aryan race agenda.

ignoring aventurine's blatant gay coding is really something
Other things have had me a little salty this morning, so in case that influences my perception of how you intended this, my sincere apologies. Either way, forgive me for being serious for a moment, but I want to use this as a PSA to make a point going forward on this blog.
I have nothing against opposing views, and I have nothing against people disagreeing with me, but what I have something against on principle, are potentially snarky messages like this one that seem to have only one aim, which is to try and taint my character by making insinuations that are wholly unfounded (that you think me to be anti-LGBT?) and based on something that you genuinely cannot draw any such thing from. Now whether Aventurine is 'gay-coded' as you so put it, or a bisexual man (on which note: it's real saddening to see that in 2024, in-house fighting against bisexuality's mere existence still reigns supreme, good job, you're really making admirable strides) doesn't matter for what I'm going to touch on. Although out of respect for the character himself and the person who wrote him, I can't move on without noting that you may want to reread some character stories, some dialogues (particularly things said by the Harmony to him, for instance), to see whether that seals your faith in your claim, or diminishes it. Either way, I want to remind you: being bisexual doesn't reduce the significance of being drawn to the same sex.
Alright, continuing what I was saying: messages like these don't accomplish anything, outside of making you feel like you're on a pedestal; is it cold up there? I don't envy you. In all seriousness however, in all my years on any of my blogs, I have always aimed to be canon-strict with my portrayals, with which I set myself up for something that I deem imperative for myself in RP: to be criticized by the masses. I have always tried to engage with my follower base, I have always encouraged them to come to me if I'm wrong on something, I value people trying to poke holes in my logic. And if you succeed in proving that I overlooked something, I will happily admit it, and stand corrected. In that, I aim to say that I thoroughly enjoy debate and discussion (based in rationale, and not feelings), which I think are fundamental to our society even outside of Tumblr. If someone disagrees with me, my notes are open, if you want to question something that I think or have posted, my askbox (as you've learned and have made use of) is open. But all I ask is that you open a line of healthy debate with me, and not send something that is entirely baseless if you don't even substantiate your claim in your same message. But also, what I don't understand is that my post doesn't even directly diminish the popular Aventurine/Ratio ship in the fandom, it instead simply expresses frustration that not more people see the depth of the Aventurine/Topaz dynamic, and recognize it as a good ship as well, because there is a lot within the game that aims at a definite potential there. Granted, yes, that comes with having to acknowledge that Aventurine may just be a bisexual man who is also into women, but if that's something that doesn't sit quite right with you, then maybe the issue that you're pointing at me, should be returned to you, the one who initially pointed the accusatory finger here.
Again, if you want to have a conversation about this and tell me why you think that I'm wrong by substantiating your own claim, you're very welcome to, and I'd be happy to engage with you. But until then, this is all that I have for you. And before I might get a 'why do I need to substantiate my thing, Sae', it's nothing against you personally, and instead it's the simple 101 of debate. You disagree with a point that I make? Then it is up to you to tell me why you disagree, so that I can give you a fruitful counter that you can then do something with.
Regardless of the intention of your message, anon, I wish you a good day, and I hope that it's raining less over there, wherever you may be, than it is over here. I'm not motivated to go get my groceries!
