We took a little walk back over to Queens’ Marketplace on Wednesday afternoon, this time to check out the grocery store there and get a drink at their attached Aloha Wine Bar. The grocery store itself was more of a variety store compared to Foodland Farms, though they too had a decent selection of fresh poke. Had we not had access to a car, I could have gotten lunches here as well, but I’m glad I got to get the best from both of these stores.

The Aloha Wine Bar happy hour, meanwhile, is probably one of the best deals in the area: $7 23 oz local draft beers from Kona Brewing and Ola Brewery, $9 martinis/tropical cocktails, $2 shots, and 10% off all food, (Note: this as of January 2024; the menu may change.) I was reminded of the very chill in-store bar at the Mariano’s in Chicago near where my friends live, as this place gave me that same, relaxed feeling. 

The walk to and from the marketplace is also quite lovely in the afternoon.

One of the main attractions at Hilton Waikoloa Village is Dolphin Quest, which is essentially a meet and greet where you can pet and swim with dolphins for roughly $300 per person. While I definitely saw people do this experience, it was never a particularly busy attraction--probably because it is so expensive--and I definitely have mixed feelings about it existing at all.

I won’t lie and say it was cool to see them up close as they were swimming around in various paddocks, and it seems like they have a sincere bond with their handlers, and it looks like they have the ability to swim in larger bodies of water depending on the time of day, but they are still captive for our amusement at the end of the day, and that, well, sucks. I mean, I feel pretty confident that they are getting better care than the dolphins who starred in the show Flipper, but I don’t love the idea of dolphins as attractions either. And then I look at that bottom picture of the dolphin eyeing me, and he’s totally asking “Whaddya want from me?”
