A collaborative effort of scientists and Hawaiian culture-keepers is preparing to undertake the largest restoration of coral reefs in the island chain’s history. While the scientists work to propagate and study the corals below, a cultural organization called the Kohala Center will work on land to educate how terrestrial activities impact the corals that give such rich life to Hawaiian seas. Named ʻĀkoʻakoʻa (pronounced ah kō-a kō-a), the effort shares a dual meaning: “to assemble” and “coral,” and is characteristic of the native Hawaiian involvement. “As a stage for the integration of cultural practice, management, and science, ʻĀkoʻakoʻa will seed a deeper connection between human and coral communities in an era of climate change,” said Greg Asner, director of Arizona State University’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science, who is spearheading the restoration work. Asner said corals are critical to reef biodiversity and home to millions of marine species, which dot the seafloor with a dizzying array of shapes and sizes, but they’re also the “canary in the coal mine” when it comes to our collective behavior—where corals flourish, land and sea are usually well stewarded.

Longan Kohala Plant in Sydney: A Tropical Delight for Your Garden
The Longan Kohala plant, scientifically known as Dimocarpus longan, is a remarkable addition to gardens in Sydney, offering both aesthetic beauty and delicious fruit. Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Kohala variety is particularly esteemed for its sweet, aromatic flesh that resembles lychee but boasts a unique flavor profile. This versatile fruit tree thrives well in Sydney's climate, making it an ideal choice for local gardeners looking to cultivate exotic fruit.
Characteristics of the Longan Kohala Plant
The Longan Kohala is a medium-sized tree that can reach heights of 5 to 15 meters. It features dense, dark green foliage that creates an appealing canopy, providing shade and a lush backdrop for your garden. The leaves are alternate, oblong, and glossy, contributing to the tree's overall ornamental value. During the growing season, the Longan Kohala produces small, fragrant white flowers that bloom in clusters, attracting bees and other pollinators. These flowers are followed by small, round fruits that ripen to a golden brown color.
Growing Conditions
To cultivate a healthy Longan Kohala plant, it’s essential to provide the right growing conditions. This tree prefers well-drained, loamy soil enriched with organic matter. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, ensuring good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot. Longan trees thrive in full sun, so plant them in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Watering and Care
Longan plants require regular watering, especially during dry periods. It's vital to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the tree can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season will promote healthy growth and fruit production.
Harvesting and Uses
The Longan fruit is typically ready for harvest from late summer to early autumn. When ripe, the fruits are sweet and juicy, perfect for fresh eating, desserts, and smoothies. They can also be dried for use in teas and traditional dishes. The flesh has a delicate sweetness, making it a popular choice in Asian cuisines.
Conclusion
Adding a Longan Kohala Plant in Sydney not only enhances the landscape with its beautiful foliage and flowers but also provides a rewarding source of delicious fruit. This tropical tree is relatively low-maintenance and adapts well to the local climate, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Whether enjoyed fresh or incorporated into culinary creations, the Longan Kohala is sure to be a delightful addition to your home garden. Embrace the taste of the tropics and consider planting this exquisite fruit tree today!
