Derek Hale has PTSD. I think people tend to forget that he wasn't an ass for the hell of it. He put up a rough asshole front to protect himself. He has the ugly symptoms of PTSD. Does it excuse some of his actions? No. But he does deserve some understanding and empathy.

No matter what age you see him as, he just isn't a 'grown ass man'. He had no idea how to take care of himself. He was still mentally that 15 year old who lost everything and was traumatized beyond reason.

Derek continuously kept being kicked while he was down. The poor guy couldn't catch a break. Like have a heart y'all. He was never a villain. An antagonist at one point, yes. Villain, no.

Trauma literally rewires your brain, and that poor kid got enough trauma before the first episode. Derek needed lots of therapy, he needed friends, and he needed a pack.

Derek could literally trust no one. Not because he didn't want to, but because he couldn't. He tried his best with what he had, which wasn't much, and he fucked up at times. But he kept trying to do and be better.

Summary:

Two True Mates.

Derek and Stiles had faced their fair share of trauma from a chaos demon to a sadistic hunter. They were broken but they might have found a way to be whole in each other.

Derek always went to the same cafe to grade papers. Always. He always got the same thing to drink and he always sat in the booth in the far back. Yet when he went to do so today there was someone there. Derek wasn’t happy about it. See that booth had one side against the wall which put his wolf at ease with nothing but the wall at his back. It was perfect and would allow him to see any and all threats.

It helped him but nooooo because now there was some stupid kid with a beanie, and glasses sitting there with a pen in his mouth, playing with it in a way that should have been obscene. Any other time Derek would have loved to let his wolf have what it wanted with the guy but not today, not when he had over fifty essays to grade. So, he put on his murder brows and stalked over to claim his spot. Shut up, it was his spot, okay.

The man—so not a kid in any way, shape or form—looked up when Derek got to the table and offered a quirked brow, pushing his glasses back up his nose. “Sup dude?”

Derek scowled harder. “You tell me. This is my spot.”

The guy snorted and rolled his eyes as he went back to working on his laptop. “Okay then Sheldon.”

Derek growled in annoyance. “I’m serious, kid.”

The guy flicked his gaze up and his expression shifted into a glare. “First of all, I’m not a kid. I have two doctorate degrees. So back off. Second, if the table thing is your deal then sit across from me.”

Derek made a fist, his claws popping. “I don’t like having my back towards the door. So, you move to the other side.”

The guy shook his head, gripping his pencil tightly. “No! I—” Derek quirked a brow, watching as the guy swallowed thickly, his throat clicking with the action. “I-I need to sit so I can see everything.”

Derek paused at the slight bit of fear in the guy’s voice. He relaxed slightly and tilted his head, noticing something he had missed. “You’re a spark but you’ve faced the darkness.”

The guy frowned at him. “You’re a wolf and you’ve been burned.”

Derek stiffened and nodded, his stomach swooping when the guy moved over so they could sit side by side. He offered a smile of thanks to the guy’s smile of relief.

“I’m Stiles.”

Derek nodded and firmly shook his hand. “Derek.”

When their hands connected they both felt a thrumming and when their eyes locked, they flashed emerald green. They both stilled, nearly frozen with shock and yet a fountain of hope bubbled within them. Eyes that flashed in sync, that flashed emerald green, were the universal sign of True Mates.

Six months later Stiles woke up screaming himself hoarse from a nightmare in a cold sweat, shaking uncontrollably only to be pulled into a soft but firm embrace.

Derek held his mate close in a protective embrace and in the darkness, Stiles revealed what happened with the Nogitsune. He whispered to Derek how he had been possessed and was turned in their efforts to defeat the demon. However, he turned into a fox and not a wolf. Derek loved him as he was and whispered as much over and over and over again until Stiles fell back to sleep.

Not even a month later, there was a small fire in their kitchen and Derek froze. He ended up putting it out but shut himself in the bathroom, climbing into the tub fully clothed. He turned the shower on and made sure the water was freezing.

That was how Stiles found his mate. He didn’t even hesitate to climb into the tub, not bothering to remove his own clothing or caring one bit about their state. Clothes were replaceable, Derek was not.

After a few minutes, Derek opened up about the fire that had killed his family and stuttered his way through explaining what happened with Kate.

Stiles whispered to Derek over and over that he loved him and that he was safe. Once Derek had calmed down, they took a hot shower and curled up together in bed.

Two years after that, when the twins were two years old, the alpha wolf and his fox spark mate rebuilt the Hale house together by hand, well, by hand, by paw and of course by spark.

Their third child, a boy they named Mikhail, who went by Mika, was born the first night they spent in their new home.

As the alpha and alpha mate, curled up together, their cubs sleeping peacefully between them, they couldn’t help but thank the goddess.

Despite all the pain they had endured, despite all the tragedy and trauma they had borne, they were finally happy, healthy, safe and finally, finally they were home.

I'm fine. He'd said that a lot lately the past few years, despite the fact that Stiles didn't think it had ever been more of a lie--except maybe the first couple of years after his mom died. It didn't matter who asked him, either, the reply was always the same when someone asked how he was doing. So he didn't even think about it when his uncle asked if he was alright.

"I'm fine." The lie came as naturally as breathing. Though, in this moment, breathing wasn't actually coming so easily.

"No yeah, totally fine," he mumbled as he started shaking his hands to get rid of the nervous energy panic attack that was building. Still recovering from being possessed by an ancient, evil fox spirit who made him hurt everyone he cared about and kill innocent people while he watched, but other than that, Stiles was doing great.

Aside from the fact that his typical ADHD restlessness was dialed up to 15, and he couldn't sit still for more than a couple of minutes before jumping up and pacing around the living room, and Chris's voice was starting to sound farther away and warped like they were talking over a bad connection instead of talking face to face, and Stiles was pretty sure he wasn't supposed have his head on a swivel like he was trying to see all corners of the room at all times to make sure there definitely wasn't anything there.

"Why do you ask?" He couldn't even force himself to stand still long enough to meet his uncle's gaze; if he stopped moving, he'd start thinking, and if he started thinking, he'd start remembering-- Walk faster, Stiles.

And it's SO REALISTIC!!!!

The way that Scott, no matter how much he likes Kira, and no matter how engrossed and distracted he is by the bardo research, drops everything the second he realizes that Stiles is in distress.

The way he immediately gets up and runs to him with all of the urgency in the world, ready to catch him if he falls, and determined to get him out of there as quickly as he can.

The way he is so clearly worried and almost near panic himself because his best friend is struggling and he doesn't know how to fix it...until he does.

The way he schools his own emotions, collects himself, and keeps his voice so calm and so steady and forces Stiles to look at him and focus on him and COUNT WITH HIM.

The way Stiles turns to look at Scott, pure panic and pure fear and so out of focus and lost, but forces himself to do what Scott's asking, because it's SCOTT.

The way Scott says "five" with that little smile when he realizes it's working and Stiles is listening and he's gonna be able to get him through this and out of it.

The way Stiles' breaths keep hitching because he's so scared they'll get to ten and there will be one more, but he keeps going because Scott is asking him to and Scott is staying calm and Scott doesn't seem the least bit concerned.

The way Scott says "ten" so softly, yet so forcefully, repeating it so that Stiles can finally establish that there are ONLY TEN, and that he's OKAY, and that this ISN'T A DREAM, and that Scott is RIGHT THERE, in the flesh, HAVING HIS BACK.

The way Stiles just freezes, and his breathing evens out, and he finally looks, REALLY LOOKS, at Scott and processes that he's okay.

The way he collapses, so tired, and still so worried, but breathing and alive and HERE.

The way that Scott stares at him in concerned relief, knowing that they've gotten through the worst of it, but that Stiles is clearly still upset.

The way Scott crouches down next to him, but gives him his space, and stays calm and collected and confident and determined, no matter how worried he still is.

The way Stiles, even out of the panic attack, feels like it's all over, and feels like they'll never be able to help anyone or fix anything.

The way Scott, in not so many words, tells him that they'll figure it out, because they have each other, and that's all that matters.

IT'S SO FREAKING PERFECT!!!

You know, that near-suicide scene...

It's amazing, and it's beautiful, and it's so well done, and so well acted, and so emotional and heartfelt, and it's one of the best scenes in the whole show.

But I'm gonna be honest. I don't know if ANYTHING can beat this panic attack scene for me.

Because it's just SO PERFECT.

The acting is AMAZING. The way Dylan acts out the panic attack, the way Tyler acts out the inevitable worry that comes with being the helper in that situation, but also the love and kindness that can make or break that situation.

The realism is so on point. As much as I love the Stydia panic attack scene, in most real-life panic attacks, kissing the person probably would just make it worse, not better. But THIS situation...this is EXACTLY how a real-life panic attack would go down, and exactly how a loved one could help bring you out of it.

More than anything, it's a BEAUTIFUL, yet slightly more subtle, representation of Scott and Stiles' friendship and just how much they mean to each other.

AND I LOVE IT SO FREAKING MUCH!!!

I have class in 45 minutes, which means there's no way I make it through this episode right now, because you KNOW I'm about to keep going back and re-watching that scene over and over again, but it's just SO PERFECT!!!

I need a help. The fic im looking for is Derek is getting therapy, Stiles is away because he's studying. Derek and Stiles talk on the phone regularly. Derek is ordered by his therapist to tell someone about therapy and that he has PTSD. Derek tells Stiles but he doesn't respond well and hangs up. Derek regrets telling him and he's sad. Then I guess it turns out that Stiles was scared because saying such a thing is a big responsibility and he was secretly reading books about PTSD to help Derek.
