Normally, I'd be up for a civil discussion but I just don't have the mental energy to possibly argue right now. So I'll just say this.
I have always seen Peter differently than any of the villains because of everything that happened to him. Not because of the actor. Not because he's good looking. But because of everything that led to how he got to that point. I take into account the why. I judge based on the why and the information that is there. Unfortunately the show doesn't give adequate information on everything so we're left to assume what makes sense to us personally.
I do the same with Monroe. I take into account how she had been attacked and is now terrified of the supernatural and she's fueled by fear, not hate.
I'm sorry I'm not able to have an actual full discussion/debate, because I do have a lot I would like to say, but I'm just not up for it at this time.
When Season 1 Peter Hale told Stiles that he was not the bad guy, he was right. I don't know what the fuck they were doing with Peter Hale for the rest of the show, but he was objectively not the bad guy in Season 1.
Like yes he killed Laura and turned a teenage Scott, but he was in a dissociative fugue psychosis brought on during a multi-year catatonic episode after being burned alive in an intentionally set house fire that killed 8 members of his family. He was not in his right mind, but he was smart with loose morals and he was going to avenge his family. I think the show wanted us to think that Peter genuinely felt bad about killing Laura. Not that he regretted it per se, but that he regretted that it was necessary.
When he was in his right mind he targeted the people who killed his family. I'm not saying that he was a boy scout. He was definitely willing to do whatever it took, but he was objectively more right than Kate and the Hunters.
No matter what they attempted to retcon him into, in Season 1 he was just a man trying to avenge his murdered family. Do you want me to be upset he killed Kate? Cause I am abso-fucking-lutely not. and I like Allison, but up until that point she was firmly on Team Kate so of course Peter was going after her.
So, this is all to say that I am so confused with what they did with him in later seasons. I liked him enough, but in Season 1 he wasn't evil, he was just a pragmatist and he was right. And he was proven to be more right each following season as the werewolf cops progressively got worse and worse. There were only one and a half Hunters that weren't completely evil, cause Alison could not make-up her mind.
#i gave my thoughts on Peter yesterday and that's probably the most I have in the past few weeks#I feel bad I can't give a proper response#maybe later when I feel up for it

Yeah that was something I hated. Scott lied to the sheriff too. I'm sure not as much, but Stiles literally kept everyone at arms length. He used words to deflect and protect.
Even after the sheriff was in the know about werewolves he still didn't believe Stiles unless Scott could back his words up. Which is why when Stiles tells the sheriff that his mom would have believed him, it fucking hurts. Not because it was a low blow, because I personally don't think it was, but because after all we see, it's clear Claudia always showed her belief in Stiles whereas the sheriff didn't.
Claudia was probably the "fun parent" but maybe she did truly always believe him Or at least pretended to. We'll never know.
But I do know that Stiles deserved better. Stiles deserved to have his own father believe him. Especially when he goes all out in using visual aids to explain about the supernatural with chess pieces. Yes, he lied a lot after Scott got bit, but those weren't even his secrets to tell.
“To trust? You?”
“Trust Scott?”
“Oh, yea, Scott I trust”
No matter how funny this scene is in the second season, I'm still thinking about how Stiles heard it. Yes, he lied a lot about what was happening, but this child did nothing but save his best friend, and a dozen other unsuspecting residents of the city. It must be disgusting to hear how much his father doesn't trust him.
And then there's a scene with Mr. McCall and the Sheriff's phrase "to be honest, I stopped believing Stiles since he learned to speak". And it's funny at the moment, but once again emphasizes how neglected Stiles' words.
And unfortunately, his words were his main defense.
