"My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered."
— Psalm 108:1-6
~~~~~
“The Sound of Praise”
By Jennifer Kane
My heart goes on; the music continues,
My soul sings to you here in the waking.
I rise with praise echoing in heart and mind—
Can you hear it, my Lord?
My spirit hums with the sound of worship.
Let my praise stir the souls around me;
Let the air here below be so thick with adoration
That it outstrips even the breath we breathe.
Your faithfulness stretches farther than the universe's edge,
Beyond the expansion of the heavens.
In your might, you reach my heart,
Saving me with favor’s gentle hand.
So save me with your love—
Hold me close in your presence,
As I wait, remember, and grow aware
Of your unending love and faithfulness.
Thank you, Lord, for your mercy.
~~~~~
In Psalm 108, David proclaims his steadfast heart—a heart set firmly on God in praise, regardless of his circumstances. His song isn’t driven by perfect circumstances but by a fierce determination to exalt God above all. Instead of focusing on his needs, he sings out with his entire being, greeting the dawn with worship. David’s praise isn’t passive; it’s an active, wholehearted offering.
David invites us to do the same. We are reminded to “awaken the dawn” with our worship, putting God first, even before the day’s demands. What if we all began our mornings like this—with the kind of praise that has the power to change our perspective, filling us with trust and joy?
David’s praise isn’t meant to be hidden; he worships “among the peoples” as a testament to God’s greatness. This kind of bold worship declares God’s vast mercy and truth, which “reach to the skies.” David shows us that God deserves not only our worship but our very best.
As David continues, he shifts from praise to a humble call for deliverance: “Save us and help us with your right hand.” This prayer is rooted in assurance—David knows he’s deeply loved by God. “Beloved” is embedded in his very name, and so he calls out, confident of God’s heart toward him. In the same way, we are called to approach God with full assurance that we, too, are His beloved, precious in His sight.
What challenges do you face in keeping a “steadfast” heart? How can you bring those to God as an offering of trust?
What gifts or “glory” has God given you that you can use in worship? How can you bring Him your best?
How might you make your praise known, encouraging others with God’s mercy and truth?
When you pray, do you come to God as His beloved child? How does this change the way you approach Him?
~~~~~
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a heart that seeks to be steadfast in praise. Help me to worship You with my whole being, bringing You the best of my gifts, time, and heart. Let my praise awaken each new day, setting my heart on Your faithfulness and love. Remind me of Your boundless mercy and truth, and let me share it with those around me. When I face challenges, let my praise turn to prayer, rooted in the assurance that I am Your beloved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Be Thou Exalted!
Psalm 108:1-5. O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise Thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto Thee among the nations. For Thy mercy is great above the heavens: and Thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. PSALMS S.O.A.P. ~ PSALM 108
Monday, 12/18/23
Well... here we are one week from Christmas... already? finally? at last?
And it occurred to me that perhaps today's Psalm is an Advent Psalm? No theologian, of course... but just askin'...
SCRIPTURE:
Give us [me] aid against the foe, for human help is worthless. ~ Psalm 108:12 [personalized]
OBSERVATION:
...and this is exactly what He did...
...in Bethlehem...
...in that manger...
...not just for the shepherds or wise men...
...but for me, too...
Anything I try - on my own - is worthless...
APPLICATION:
Seek Him...
Rely on Him...
Realize my efforts without Him are worthless...
Thankfully praise Him...
PRAYER: (Tying in verses 1, 3, 4, & 5)
Giving Father God; Give me aid against the enemy, and forgive my stumbling and faults and worthless attempts to do Your will on my own... My heart is confident, God; I will sing; I will sing praises with the whole of my being. I will praise You, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your faithful love is higher than the heavens, and Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. God, be exalted above the heavens, and let Your glory be over the whole earth. In Jesus's Name, and for Your glory and honor...
Singing for you - in expectation - because of Him...
Stealth Superpowers
I’m sure you’ve heard about the petite woman who was able to lift the car off her child who was pinned under it. The people who have done that kind of feat, accomplished an almost unthinkable amount of strength. I read this in Psychology Today: “The human body can unleash some amazing RESERVES that deadens “temporary” pain. So, in a time when stealth reserves are needed, it is possible to become…
Not for Sale
With God we shall do valiantly; it is He who will tread down our foes. Psalm 108:13 Seen the movie Sound of Freedom yet? It was new this past week. Opened on July 4th. That’s when we saw it. Powerful film. It’s a true story about saving trafficked children. The first one he saves at the U.S. border. Shocking our beloved country is one of the top 3 destinations for child…
Psalm 108:1 A Steadfast Heart
O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Psalm 108:1 The desires of most people change on a regular basis. What is their greatest desire changes tomorrow. Businesses, movies, music all rely upon this in trying to get people to purchase and do more things. There are very things that most people are locked down upon as being a part of their desires to the…
Fear vs. Hope?
It has been said that the only force that is stronger than fear is hope. People who have hope will often do amazing things, while people who are without hope will march quietly to slaughter. One of the great tragedies of life is the fact that so many people are living in despair without hope, just carrying on and not living, but existing, barely surviving. I heard a story one time about a man…
A Song or Psalm of David.
1 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
2 Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. 3 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. 4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. 5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth; 6 that thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.
7 God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver; 9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.
10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? 11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts? 12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. 13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies. — Psalm 108 | Authorized King James Version (AKJV) The Holy Bible: Authorized King James Version; Cambridge University Press, the Crown’s patentee in the UK.
