Proportional divider tool is a great tool for both beginner and professional artists, it helps to draw any object with correct proportions at same scale or larger, and can be used to draw from life or from photos. You can measure every part of your object or just mark few points to guide you. It's good for trainnig your eyes and checking your proportions easily when you need. Here I just used it to make a double scale drawing of what I see, so I measure from my place and not so close, some artists measure the actual size of the object if they are doing an exact illustration of it. If you’re a beginner artist, something you might find helpful is a technique called “enveloping”. It simply means to find the outer shape of the subject, without using any curved lines. So maybe a funny rectangle or even triangle, use this to “catch” the overall silhouette of the subject. Then begin to dwindle the envelop down into the actual shapes, leaving the refined details for last... this constraint will also help you compose your subject, instead of getting bigger or smaller and ending up with something that makes you unhappy!
