Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1865) and Ernst Marischka, Sissi (1955)
Empress Sissi wears an evening gown believed to be made by Charles Frederick Worth, the most prolific dress maker of the late 19th century. The dress was made of white satin and tulle. It’s covered with silver foiled stars underneath the top layer of tulle, it’s also has gemstones and pearls throughout. The silhouette features an off the shoulder neckline, puffed sleeves, fitted bodice, and full skirt, which were extremely popular in the late Victorian era. Sissi had very long hair that was braided to create her famous hairstyle and was adorned with diamond edelweiss pins.
The 1955 film, Sissi, directed by Ernst Marischka featured costumes by Gerdago. Empress Sissi’s iconic dress was recreated well for this film. My only complaint is that the stars are on the top layer of the skirt, aren’t as plentiful as they were on the original, and are gold instead of silver. These details were most likely changed so they would show up better on film but makes it look less opulent to me. I much prefer the real life gown.

Figure 1 and 2: The Gilded Age fashion, specifically from the 1870s
Figure: 3 and 4: The Gilded Age fashion, specifically from the 1880s. The white dress is a wedding gown
The Gilded Age in the USA was an era from 1870 to 1900, the artwork is depictions of the fashion worn by upper class women. A lot of the Met Gala attendees notably took inspiration from the Roaring Twenties, outfits inspired by the photos above would’ve been 10x more accurate.
This year’s theme would have also been a perfect opportunity for an important political message. The Gilded Age marked an era for rapid economic growth in the US, and the country started to see a growing gap between the rich and the poor. It would have been great to see celebrities speak up for the poor and working class people of the world, especially in the USA, but unfortunately the opportunity was lost.

The costumes in Bridgerton
Tumblr media
I won’t analyze Bridgertons costumes they’re fine but I do have some problems with them.
#1 The Excess
My biggest problem is the excessive amount of costumes that were made, 7,000+ and over 100+ costumes just for Daphne. This is for 8 episodes, there’s just no reason for having that many costumes, it’s woefully unnecessary. When there’s something I can’t make for my cosplays I always try to buy them second hand, because we have such an excess of clothes in the world, it’s wasteful. This is reflected in the Bridgeton costumes because they chose to use modern fabric and bright colors a lot of them can’t be used in other tv shows/movies. They can’t be displayed because there are just too many, so where will they go? Will they just become waste, if so then what was the point? I feel so bad for the people making the costumes, their time was wasted for no reason. I think most people will agree that having a couple of well-made costumes is far better than having so many mediocre costumes. On IMDb it lists 130 cast members (there probably more but I’ll use this #) that would be at least 53 costumes for each. All for an 8 episode series. If they don’t reuse these costumes for season 2, I’ll fight them.

#2 Poor Fit
The waistline cutting through the middle of the bust is painful to me. The waistlines are so high! In the Regency era, the waistlines stopped under the bust, not through it. The excessiveness of the costumes created fit issues that could’ve been solved by having fewer costumes so more time and care can be devoted to each costume.
#3 The Corsets
Why the fuck are they wearing full-length corsets with empire waist dresses, it’s nonsensical. They do wear transitional short stays in the show but in the scenes where the corsets are a focal point, they’re long, and being tight-laced. There was no reason for tight lacing because there isn’t a defined waistline on the dresses, Marina is understandable but they did Prudence dirty. It’s very clear that they don’t understand that corsets for women with larger busts didn’t just make a necklace out of their tits. The scene where you can see cuts on Daphne’s back from the corset is infuriating as well as this tv/movie trope of not wearing anything under a corset. Chemise or shifts were always worn under corsets because it’s more comfortable and corsets for upper-class women were made of nice fabrics and you wouldn’t want it to be messed up by oil and sweat.
#4 Day wear
An appalling lack of day wear is worn in Bridgerton. Eloise is the only person who consistently wears daytime appropriate clothing, everyone else is wearing evening dresses. Regency era day wear is great, give me the Spencer jackets I deserve.
#5 Portia Featherington and Queen Charlotte Choices were made.
