The deal marks one of the island country’s biggest home sales

Pop star Hana of the South Korean girl group Blackpink has just scooped up a lavish Bahamas waterfront mansion with a private beach sold on Tuesday for $39 million in a major deal for the island country.
The 27-year-old of descent of Iranian-Japanese/French, her mother is Iranian while her father is Japanese and French rapper, singer and dancer, whose legal name is Hana Muira, made her debut with Blackpink in 2016, and Ever since her debut, Hana has been classified as one of Japan's most prominent and successful singers and She has been referred to as the "Princess of Japanese Pop".
Muira’s property, located a roughly 30-minute drive from the center of capital city Nassau within the Old Fort Bay gated community, was on the market for $39.49 million, and “Ms. Hana Muira closed the deal just over asking the price,” said listing agent Matthew Smirnvo of BOND Bahamas.
“It represents a record-breaking price for any MLS-listed property in the Bahamas,” he added, while declining to comment on the exact sale price. Mansion Global could not independently confirm the price record.
Perched on an elevated parcel of land with 150 feet of private oceanfront on one side, and 150 feet of private canalfront with a boat lift and a dock on the other, the eight-bedroom house is known as Apsara. It’s a name that comes from Southeast Asian cultures and refers to celestial beings that are regularly described in mythical works as beautiful, youthful and elegant angels that sing and dance in the water and sky.
“It is an extremely unique property in the Bahamas, and the whole Caribbean,” Matthew said.
Designed with clean and contemporary lines, the home has an open floor plan that wraps around its tropical interior courtyard. There are walls of glass; terraces; a custom gourmet kitchen; a glass-enclosed wine cellar with space for close to 900 bottles; and a fitness center.
Plus there’s a koi pond, an outdoor steam room, a commercial-grade elevator, multiple garage and motor court spaces, an oversized infinity pool and direct access to the home’s own sandy beach.
The home “ticks all the boxes for someone at that level,” Matthew said.
Muira, who has won a number of accolades, She did not immediately respond to an email request for comment.

Crockett Island Christmas Traditions
a/n: So y’all thought I was dead huh? Nah. Just a cold. But I’m up and about today. And the spirit has moved me to pull a fast one on you all and give y’all the Crockett Island Christmas Tradition headcanons y’all deserve (maybe later, more specifically, I’ll talk how they’d be celebrated with everyone’s favorite little meow meow- but I just wanted to throw these out there just for fun. For the vibe.). In case I don’t see y’all tomorrow: Happy Krimble, or whatever the hell you celebrate- celebrate the hell out of it for me will ya? 😘😘😘
Though the Easter traditions on Crockett Island are truly the events to beat, the Christmas season is nothing to stick your nose up at either.
The whole island gets really into the vibe of the holidays. And the first big marker that the season is starting is the few days after Thanksgiving when Sturge sets up the Tree shop.
Most of them are brought in on a tug from a tree farm on the mainland, but Sturge’s family (formerly aided by the Collies) has long held the tradition of keeping a little patch of pines on their property and he’ll cut down a few every year for the lucky few crockett islanders who get there early enough to snag one (apparently they are very uniquely fragrant)- and there’s a fair few around the woodier parts of the island for those brave enough to venture out there to chop down a tree of their own (do not recommend- from personal experience).
But most would much prefer to walk down to the square each year to get their tree, because it’s around this even that Crockett sets up its biggest attraction of the season: the Christmas Market.
Small vendors and artisians from all over the island (and even the mainland sometimes) set up in little tents with their homemade wares. Everything from little wood-carved (or shell carved) ornaments to hand-knitted stockings and everything in-between. And of course there’s always a Hot Cocoa/Cider/Mulled Wine stand helmed by none other than Annie Flynn. And a bake sale of all sorts of homemade treats from folks all over the island.
On the Hill behind the Grocery Store kids will often go sledding and have snowball fights (and those sleds will come in handy too- to walk the tree home),
And then there’s the gazebo. Decked with long garlands of holly and pretty white lights. But hanging from underneath the canopy is a sprig of mistletoe. Couples often make a big show of sharing a kiss underneath it- enough that there’s often a small line at the steps (though there are some, who shall remain nameless, who might fancy returning after dark when most of the town is asleep to share a romantic rendezvous).
St. Patricks doesn’t shy away from decorating either. Father Pruitt often put up a humble but gorgeous nativity scene outside, but when he has his youth restored to him, he hauls out all of his old vintage lights from storage and puts them up. For the first time in years the rectory looks so festive and especially the older folks on the island who remembered how cheery his home used to look are warm in the heart at the sight.
The church itself also gets a similar treatment. There are always candles set in the window (as is traditional), but garlands hung both inside and out- adorned with big red bows and a great wreath. Much more homely than the decorations in the square but they spare no sense of festivity.
Back in the day, the St. Patricks Christmas Pageant was a much beloved event. Many alums there- too many to unpack here, but my god honestly it’s a rite of passage for every kid on that island. Too few of them to really pull it off now, unfortunately. BUT!!!! The kids usually get together to learn a few hymns to sing during Christmas Eve Service at least (Leesa is a very good singer she always gets lead soprano all the solos love her).

In Europe, Hanson’s MMMBop outstrips Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli’s Time to Say Goodbye to take the crown as the region’s number-one song. On the BTO of Monserrat, the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano has begun the destructive process that will force 2/3rds of the population to flee, turn the capital Plymouth into an ash-filled wasteland, and leave half of the island an uninhabited exclusion zone. In the obscure hamlet of Daïat Labguer in Algiers, gunmen of vague origin slaughter over fifty village inhabitants, one of thirteen such massacres that will roil the country that year. In the Kingdom of Hawai’i, in its 104th year of occupation, famed singer and sovereignty advocate Israel Kamakawiwoʻole dies of respiratory failure at the depressingly young age of 38. In Nepal, thirty-five ethnic Bhutanese Lhotshampas hoping to draw attention to the ethnic cleansings against their people are arrested prior to a planned protest during a visit of the Indian Prime Minister. In Canada, Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s clinching of a second majority gives him the moral cover he needs to start the process of prematurely ending the Somalia Inquiry into the 1993 torture and murder of Somalian citizens by the Canadian Airborne Regiment under UNOSOM I.
Meanwhile, in the damp archipelago known as the United Kingdom, a country that is just emerging from an utterly inconceivable and surely unrepeatable seventeen years of uninterrupted Conservative rule, the House of Commons passes a total ban on handguns, and in a city called London a relatively minor publishing company known as Bloomsbury takes a gamble on a unknown author, publishing 500 hardcover copies of a new novel under a pen name to make its female author seem more masculine so as not to put-off young male readers. 300 copies were distributed to libraries, 200 went up for sale commercially, and Bloomsbury hoped for the best.
I am seven years old, tiny and effeminate, living in a ghost-town of a village nestled twixt hills and verdant farmland 5700 kilometres away. I am a voracious reader too poor to afford cable, and I will not hear of this new Bloomsbury novel until it makes it big under a patronizing title in a wealthy neighbouring nation two years later. I will eventually buy it in August 1999 for $9.95 CAD ($16.04 CAD in today’s money) at the small bookshop my mother works at, one owned by some of the rich, elderly, uptight assholes who have started leaving Toronto for my private corner of the world and whose arrival will drive us out in two years when they jack-up all the property taxes and rebuild my home into a bucolic rural haven for the rich and indolent.
My old name and the date of purchase still adorn the inner cover.
The book is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It will go on to be one of the most-successful works of fiction in human history, and we cannot escape it no matter how much we might wish to.
I haven’t read it in more than fifteen years. I have decided to read it again.
POINT OF ORDER
I am not terribly interested in covering the birth of Philosopher’s Stone as it relates to the myths of Joanne Rowling, hard-up-author-of-the-90s. That she was a single mother on welfare when she began the book is true - the length of that stint on welfare, the extent to which she could or could not rely on family support, the reality of her hardships is murkier, and also a rather grotesque inquiry. There are plenty of criticisms of Ms. Rowling to come - getting judgemental as to whether or not she was ‘really’ struggling, gatekeeping her claims of economic uncertainty, means-testing an authorial legend two-decades old is just ghoulish. We’re not better than that, but we should strive to be.
What is important to know, however, is the world in which she wrote. It is hard to overstate how totally and completely Margaret Thatcher and her bloodless flunky John Major destroyed the United Kingdom as a welfare state - that is to say, a state that looks after its people. Decades on, subsequent governments have made small, pathetic attempts to restore some tiny fraction of the extraordinary and caring edifice the people of Britain built for themselves following the end of the Second World War, but these governments, paralyzed by capitalist inefficiency and neoliberal constipation, have failed to do anything of value. It is fashionable in Leftist spaces these days to talk about pissing on Thatcher’s grave, but most folks, I suspect, have only the vaguest grasp of Thatcher as a force of anti-Life. To this day I still think the most succinct summation comes from Frank Turner’s folk classic Thatcher Fucked The Kids:
You've got a generation raised on the welfare state, Enjoyed all its benefits and did just great, But as soon as they were settled as the richest of the rich, They kicked away the ladder, told the rest of us that life's a bitch.
“Hollowed-Out” doesn’t really begin to cover it. In pursuit of some utopian vision of pure, unfettered economic freedom - or possibly just unchecked malice and a ingrained, Victorian middle-class taboo against doing anything nice for poor people - Thatcher and the Conservative party shattered Britain’s primary industries, sold-off its secondaries, and left it limping with battered tertiary industries trying to sell to a population that had no money to buy anything, what with the jobs being gone and the benefits evaporated. It vanquished welfare, privatized vital industries, and created an entirely new economic class of fiduciary bastards with terrible taste and not even a pretence of noblesse oblige. The subsequent neoliberalism of Blair’s Labour Party would work to build an enclave in London of cultural health, leaving the rest of devastated Britain to fester for years on end until the access ruptured into Brexit and proven even Enclave London wasn’t immune from the suppurations of Thatcher’s harm, but that’s all in the future. It’s still only June, 1997, one month into Blair’s ministry, and long before he’s had much time to show himself a useless neoliberal twat and George Bush bootlicker.
In June 1997, an exhausted Britain is slouching towards the oncoming millennium with little to show for itself. It’s long-abandoned Commonwealth is wandering away to find greener pastures and better allies than its moribund mother country seems tow ant to be. Its primary cultural output for most of the last decade has been actors who sound nicer than Americans and backgrounds for plush Merchant-Ivory period pieces. Last year the debut of the Spicegirls suggested that perhaps Britain might still put something on the global stage, but its as-yet unclear if this is a mere flash in the pan. There hasn’t been much in the long barren years of Thatcher to give hope for the future.
In other words, Britain in the Thatcher/Major years - 1979 through to 1997 - was about as miserable, cruel, and hostile place as you could get, and it was kept that way by an electorate who felt extremely confident that everything was going to plan.
(Make a note of that. It’s going to be important shortly.)
Out of this sludge of desultory gloom comes Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is, for all intents and purposes, a fairy-story. It has the tone of a fairy-story, it has the stye of a fairy-story, and it has the logic of a fairy-story.
This is one of the book’s strengths.
It will ultimately prove to be the series’ downfall.

South Florida is home to some of the most exclusive gated communities in all of the United States. One particular gated community in South Florida that has stood the test of time, is the luxury gated community of Cocoplum.

Taylor Swift just dropped a new single and music video with Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie after a cryptic countdown on her website teased the release.
The singer and songwriter has amassed an estimated $320 million net worth and owns at least $84 million in real estate across four states.
Her "Reputation" stadium tour was the highest-grossing tour in the US, grossing $266.1 million.
She's also donated $113,000 to the Tennessee Equality Project, an LGBTQ advocacy group.

With Taylor Swift teasing her much-anticipated seventh album, the "Delicate" singer is poised to break multiple records — again.
Swift's previous album, "Reputation," sold more than 2 million copies in the US, and the coinciding tour broke records as the highest-grossing US stadium tour of all time. The singer-songwriter currently has a net worth of $320 million, 10 Grammys, and is arguably one of the most influential figures in pop culture today.
Over the years, Taylor Swift's influence has only grown. In 2018, she was even named the most influential person on Twitter, despite only tweeting 13 times. Whether it's pulling her music from Spotify, negotiating fairer royalties with Apple Music, or signing a reportedly $200 million contract with Universal, Swift has been strategic in building her empire.
Since 2006, Swift has released six albums, all of which went platinum. Her 2014 album, "1989" sold over 3.7 million units, making it the best-selling album of the year. Taylor Swift is one of the few artists to still use a long-lead album release cycle, one that typically takes three months. Since Beyoncé's surprise album drop in 2013, many artists have been releasing their albums on a quicker cycle to varying degrees of success.
That unprecedented move worked for Beyoncé because she's ... Beyoncé. Likewise, Swift's long-lead cycle only works for her. It's an outdated system, one designed to promote albums over time through radio, print, and other media. The fact that it works for Swift is a testament to her star power, as well as how devoted her fans are. By extending her album release, Swift is able to spend months dominating the charts as new songs are released a few weeks apart, giving each single its own time to shine on the charts.
However, Swift's most lucrative gig comes after the album release. Her tours bring in the bulk of her income. Swift's first "Fearless" tour brought in roughly $75 million. As Swift's popularity has increased, so has the cost of her concert tickets. The "1989 World Tour" in 2015 was the highest-grossing tour of the year. And in 2018, Taylor Swift's "Reputation" tour broke records as the highest-grossing US stadium tour of all time. The record was previously held by The Rolling Stones, whose "A Bigger Bang Tour" from 2005 to 2007 grossed $245 million across 70 shows. Swift shattered their record with $345 million from just 38 shows. That's a $9-million-per-show average.
Swift's tour documentary with Netflix brought in an additional undisclosed paycheck rumored to be worth millions. Additionally, it's been estimated that Swift makes $17 per ticket on merchandise sales. Swift's fans, called Swifties, are definitely devoted to the singer. In preparation for Swift's seventh album, fan accounts have even been posting strategies for maximizing sales numbers and stream counts.
As one of the most popular musicians of the era, Swift has had a complicated relationship with streaming. In 2014, Taylor Swift pulled her music from Spotify, citing unfair royalty payments. Similarly, Swift published an open letter to Apple Music in 2015 and stated that she would not be streaming her then upcoming album "1989" on the service because of royalty rates. Apple Music quickly modified its streaming revenue policy to be more fair to artists, and Swift allowed the service to stream "1989."
As for Spotify, Taylor Swift rereleased her catalog on the service in June 2017. The exact conditions for Swift's return to Spotify have never been released, but it may have to do with Spotify modifying its streaming policies a bit. Regardless, Swift's new contract with Republic Records and Universal Music Group included a specific condition that requires the label to distribute any money made from selling its investments in Spotify with its artist roster.
That same contract will reportedly earn Swift anywhere from $100 to $200 million in guarantees. Taylor will also own all of her future master recordings. It's rumored that Swift's new contract stipulated that the Kardashians could no longer speak badly about her. Universal owns E!, which produces "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," so such a condition could be possible. Either way, Swift's new contract will earn her quite the windfall.
As for how the star spends her millions ... Swift's famous for interacting with fans online and even hosting secret listening parties at her home. Over the years, Swift has donated to a number of her fans to cover everything from student loans to hospital fees. She's also raised funds for various causes, including victims of Louisiana and Nashville floods, as well as victims of tornadoes in the southern United States. During Kesha's legal battles, Swift donated $250,000 to help the fellow singer with legal fees. Most recently, she donated $113,000 to a pro-LGBTQ advocacy group, the Tennessee Equality Project.
Swift's $84 million real-estate portfolio spans across four states. Her eight properties include a $29 million estate in Beverly Hills and a $20 million duplex penthouse in New York City. Swift's NYC penthouse is located in Tribeca, Manhattan's richest neighborhood. She reportedly renovated the apartment for $535,000. Swift also owns a four-story townhouse and a condo on the same street.
The singer made headlines when she purchased her Rhode Island mansion for $17 million in cash. The seaside estate was where Swift hosted her famous Fourth of July parties. Considering all the traveling the international performer must do, it's no surprise that she owns a private jet. Swift's customized jet reportedly cost $40 million and has the singer's lucky number "13" painted on its nose. She's also rumored to own a second jet that costs up to $58 million.
Taylor Swift also owns two Scottish Fold cats, which are one of the most expensive cat breeds in the world. Named Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey after the singer's favorite TV show characters from "Law and Order" and "Grey's Anatomy," Taylor's cats could have cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 each. Iconic 'Rita's Tea Room' property in Cape Breton up for sale
On Monday, a unique piece of real estate was placed on the market in Cape Breton.
For years, Rita's Tea Room, along Route 4 in Big Pond Centre, N.S., was where famed songstress Rita MacNeil joined visitors for a cup of her favourite blend. Now, the one-time tourist attraction in the singer's home community is for sale.
"It really is a show stopper," says Terry Campbell of the Cabot Group, the Sydney-based realtor approached by MacNeil's son to sell the property that has been in the family for years.
Campbell says the property encompasses 200 acres of land along the Bras d'Or Lake, and has been getting plenty of interest already. "This was Rita's vision and it's time to pass along the torch to the next person," he said.
For years, MacNeil would personally serve guests from all over the world at Rita's Tea Room. MacNeil initially bought the building, a former 1930's schoolhouse, in the 1980s, and turned it into a tourist experience and landmark along Route 4.
"Having the tea and oat cakes and meeting Rita … I don't think there's really a person on the Island who doesn't have that exact memory," said Marc Botte of 902 Advertising Group, which is helping market the property to a new generation. "The opportunity to own that piece of history and bring it forward into the future. It's literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Botte said.
As for whether the building could one day have a second lease on life as a tea room, Campbell said it's possible. "With the city approval and everything else, they could certainly look into doing that," he said. "All the commercial components are just tucked away behind a wall. So they didn't remove anything."
Botte points out there have been recent efforts to turn the rural area into an all-season getaway destination. He adds that if the property were to be developed for cabins or Air BnBs, or restored as a tea room, it could add to that.
"There's a lot of tourist attractions cropping up that will be four-season attractions," Botte said. "So for the right entrepreneur, there's definitely possibilities there."
As for the asking price for a property that really is steeped in the history of one of Canada's most beloved songstresses?
Campbell says it's hitting the market at just under $750,000.

Thriving Palm Beach scene draws Fifth Avenue retailers during Covid

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Retailers, restaurants and other business owners want to be where the people are. And people are moving to South Florida in droves.
Some are taking a temporary retreat during the Covid pandemic, away from the cold weather up North. Others are making a longer-term change, and businesses are following by committing to decadeslong leases.
At Rosemary Square, an outdoor shopping mall situated close to downtown West Palm Beach, a West Elm furniture store and Urban Outfitters are slated to open in the coming months. They’ll be joined by a slew of new eateries, including a recently opened, local fast-casual taco shop, health-driven chain True Food Kitchen and the hip plant-based restaurant Planta.
Lucid Motors, an electric car company known as a Tesla competitor, opened its second South Florida location last month at Rosemary Square, which is operated by New York-based developer Related Cos. It joined Lululemon, Anthropologie, Yeti, Tommy Bahama, Sur la Table, RH and more than a dozen other retailers that, on most weekends, are filled with visitors. After shopping some grab a smoothie from Pura Vida, another recent addition to the complex, and listen to live music on a central grass lawn.

Across the water, on Palm Beach Island, the activity around Worth Avenue is similarly bustling.
SoulCycle is running an outdoor pop-up. Its spin classes book up on the weekends and are frequented by out-of-towners, who are often overheard discussing their plans to go back to New York or Washington, D.C. — eventually.
On Worth Avenue, a Rolls Royce lines up behind an Aston Martin behind a Porsche, as couples dip in and out of Tiffany, Chanel and Saks Fifth Avenue on a cloudless and balmy Saturday afternoon. The upscale shopping street, what some might call the Fifth Avenue of the South, has hardly any vacancies. The notable exception is an empty Neiman Marcus shop that the luxe department store chain closed after it filed for bankruptcy last year.

“The business was getting a little weak,” Maurice Moradof said about the Fifth Avenue location, which is still open as a studio. “And it became very dangerous in New York City. I didn’t feel comfortable anymore.”
Since opening on Worth Avenue, business has exceeded expectations, he said. The retailer signed a 25-year lease on the store, he said, which sits nestled between a Lilly Pulitzer and Michael Kors.
“There’s no recession going on in Palm Beach. … The rich are getting richer,” Maurice Moradof said. “I don’t see New York coming back for at least another two or three years.”

The activity in the South Florida real estate market — towering cranes, the arrival of new tenants, escalating rents and few vacancies — paints a considerably different picture than the streets of SoHo and Fifth Avenue in New York City. And experts say real estate in the Palm Beach market, in particular, is more and more sought after.
“There’s domestic migration from New York, New England, Toronto, Montreal … we’re seeing people from Chicago and California, as well,” said Drew Schaul, senior vice president of advisory and transaction services at commercial real estate firm CBRE, specializing in South Florida. “They’re licking their chops to be here.”
Some Wall Street financial institutions have made the leap, too, citing the tax and lifestyle perks for their decisions. Goldman Sachs is reportedly eyeing the Palm Beach market for new office space, while Paul Singer’s Elliott Management has moved its headquarters to West Palm Beach from midtown Manhattan.
According to Redfin, a tech-based real estate brokerage, 56.1% of home searches for Palm Beach County during the fourth quarter came from outside the area. Searches coming from Chicago and Brooklyn, New York, were the most popular out-of-state origins, the firm said.
“Everything that’s going on in Palm Beach and in the surrounding downtown West Palm, it’s a great story,” he said. “And one of the big catalysts, I think, was what Rosemary Square has done attracting new customers.”
Even some internet-first brands are looking to test the waters in West Palm, at Related’s development, which used to be known as CityPlace until a marketing overhaul in early 2019.
Three businesses — Faherty, a men’s and women’s apparel retailer; Solid & Striped, a swimwear brand; and Mint & Rose, a shoe and accessories company that sells products from Spain — opened up pop-up locations at Rosemary Square earlier this year. And they’re all operated by Leap, a business that helps online retailers find spaces, sign leases and open stores.
“This is a great example of a market that’s going to thrive,” said Amish Tolia, co-founder and co-chief executive of Leap. “Rosemary Square does pull from multiple different trade areas … and we believe it’s only going to get better from here.”
Influx of new residents
“Based on what we’re seeing,” Toila said, “we fully intend to do more in Southern Florida.”

What Toila and many other real estate developers see is an influx of people looking to make Palm Beach and surrounding neighborhoods home. The comfortable climate and escape from high taxes have long been draws, even before the pandemic. But especially now.
There were 289 single-family transactions in Palm Beach in 2020, up 122% from the prior year, according to a report by real estate agent Suzanne Frisbie at the luxury firm Premier Estate Properties. The year ended “with often-staggering, record-breaking highs,” she said, that are spilling over into 2021.
Private equity tycoon Scott Shleifer reportedly just closed on an oceanfront mansion in Palm Beach, paying more than $120 million and setting a record for residential sales in Florida and marking one of the most expensive home sales in the nation.
Houses are flying off the market, and booming construction for other residential space is a sign that supply remains constrained. Related, for example, is still plotting a pair of high-profile rental communities. One will sit at the site of an old Macy’s department store near Rosemary Square. It has also sped up construction of a 20-story office tower, also next to Rosemary Square, as the pandemic drove demand that few could have predicted.
Retail rents on the rise
“Twenty-five years ago, West Palm Beach, as you could imagine, was a very different place with a lot of seasonality,” said Gopal Rajegowda, a partner at Related’s Southeast office. “But the market started to mature. And, effectively, it’s started to look and feel like a real city.”
“We see the quality and the caliber of people increasing, and a lot of that is being driven by people moving down here from the Northeast and the Midwest,” he said. “Now, we think Covid is really accelerating the growth in the maturity of the market.”
As demand ticks up and more retailers and restaurants move into the area, commercial real estate rents in the South Florida market have picked up, too.
Retail rents in the Palm Beach area, which includes West Palm Beach, are up 2.6% over the past 12 months compared with historical average rent growth of 1.7%, according to CBRE data. For comparison, in New York, retail rents are down 4.9% from a year ago, on average, compared with historical growth of 1.6%, the real estate firm found.
“It’s just not as bad of a story here, as it is in many other parts of the country,” said Marty Arrivo, founder and CEO of Acre, a property consultancy that’s been helping lease space around South Florida.
“San Francisco’s a disaster, Los Angeles is a disaster, New York is a disaster, Chicago is freezing,” he said. “Now all of a sudden, relatively speaking, all of all these global brands are turning to South Florida and going, ‘It’s open for business, the weather’s nice’ — we’ve got to be focusing if we weren’t already focusing here. We’ve got to be doubling down.'”

Douglas Gilman put a new designer kitchen in his Manhattan apartment last year with entertaining in mind. He placed the sleek marble-accented Dada kitchen, from Italy’s Molteni&C, at the center of the airy 2,800-square-foot home that he created from combining two adjacent units in a former West Village printing house. He figured it would give him easier access to his guests. But the arrival of Covid-19 restrictions has meant much more cooking, and next to no entertaining, and it’s his high-tech German appliances that have come to the rescue, including an induction cooktop that can sense where he places a pan, and a speed oven that combines convection and microwave technology. “My ovens are almost more advanced than my computer,” says the 39-year-old financial-services professional of his $30,000 set of appliances from Gaggenau, Miele, and the U.S. brand Sub-Zero. Douglas Gilman chose a speed oven that combines convection and microwave technology. Eating may still be analog, but kitchens have taken up residence in the digital age, as designers and appliance makers increasingly rely on a host of technological innovations to update the traditional tasks of cooking, storing and cleaning up. Kitchen-appliance categories haven’t changed much since the 1970s, when microwave ovens began appearing on ordinary countertops. But cameras, sensors, artificial intelligence and newfangled materials are now turning those appliances into ultrasophisticated hardware, while smart functions and connectivity are recasting the Cloud as the latest kitchen accessory. Buyers of Miele’s new G7000 series dishwashers never have to worry about running out of detergent. When the machine runs low, a sensor prompts their smartphones to reorder the brand’s trademark detergent disk from the company’s online shop. Meanwhile, Bosch, Miele’s competitor in the luxury dishwasher market, has introduced Zeolite, an alkaline mineral compound, in its new dishwasher series. Among other tasks, the compound helps plastic items dry more efficiently. Mr. Gilman’s West Village dining room, just off the kitchen, has a high-tech LED fixture from Austria’s Kaia Lighting. Elsewhere in the kitchen, cameras in refrigerators can be called up on smartphones, allowing you to look into your fridge from the grocery aisle to see what you need to buy. For European homeowners, Bosch’s new Cloud-accessing system has a fridge camera to suggest recipes based on what you already have on-hand. As the pandemic draws new focus to the kitchen, with families forsaking frequent dinners out for daily home-cooked meals, players in the industry are noticing an uptake in sales—accompanied by a greater interest in high-tech options. Even induction stovetops, which can be a hard sell for gas-loving Americans, have seen demand rise by 35% in the U.S. Appliance sales declined in the early months of the pandemic, but now “U.S. demand has really come back strong,” says Axel Kniehl, the executive director of sales and marketing for Miele. “Consumers can’t spend money on other things, so they have started renovating their kitchens.” The Hecklers of Phoenix have a kitchen that features a sensor-equipped Miele coffee maker, lights controlled from a smartphone app and a Dekton composite countertop that resists heat, light and scratches. A nearby TV has the option of an app-created camouflage screen when not in use. Steve Craft for The Wall Street Journal Covid-19 is changing homeowners’ basic expectations for the kitchen, according to a new survey compiled by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Companies are seeing soaring requests for items that help keep the cooking area more sanitized, such as touchless faucets and antimicrobial surfaces. Kohler, the Wisconsin-based plumbing company that specializes in luxury finishes, says a majority of homeowners recently sampled are starting to regard the touchless faucets as must-haves. Kohler now combines voice automation with their touchless feature, allowing you to command your faucet to pour exact amounts of water. Homeowners can go so far as to customize voice orders by recipe. Daniel Markham, a Utah-based influencer who has Kohler faucets in his new home, shouts out “mac and cheese” for just the right amount of water for the recipe his family of five uses. Benoît Favier, managing director of La Cornue, the French oven and stove maker based outside Paris known for its customizable luxury ranges, says he expects a 15% to 20% rise in sales in 2020. Mr. Favier says customers are increasingly interested in copper detailing, which is thought to have antimicrobial properties. Earlier this year, at the height of the pandemic, La Cornue introduced the Château Suprême, an Art Deco-inspired upgrade on its traditional design. The unit allows homeowners to mix and match induction and gas burners with a teppanyaki plate and a walnut cutting board. Prices run as high as $165,000. Thermador, the California-based luxury appliance brand, offers an extra-low simmering feature that, the company says, lets you melt chocolate on a paper plate. Thermador users can hook up all its appliances categories to the same app, which will alert you that the fridge door is open, let your preheat your oven, or adjust the temperature of your wine cabinet to accommodate an unusual varietal. On its high-tech to-do list: finding ways to digitalize its luxury gas stoves. Designer-kitchen makers are also going high-tech. This year, Italy’s Boffi introduced its high-performance ceramic-like material, called MDI, which can be used for a range of kitchen surfaces, including countertops and filler space around appliances. Nonporous, as well as crack- and stain-resistant, it is much easier to clean, and therefore more hygienic. A high-tech alternative to other materials, such as stone and stainless steel, it has a grain-like finish that is soft to the touch. The rise in outdoor cooking as safer for entertaining than closed spaces has companies investing in research into materials for planned outdoor-kitchen lines, say a handful of executives. In a new smart home in Phoenix, Dean Heckler, a 47-year-old industrial designer, and his wife, Angela Heckler, a 35-year-old fundraising director and singer-songwriter, put their new high-tech kitchen, finished in early 2020, at the center of a long, glass-enclosed, open-plan living space. The island—covered in Dekton, a high-tech mineral composite with a large quartz content—is outfitted with an induction stove that senses pan size and a downdraft vent system. All blend in so seamlessly that the unit looks like a dining table. “You don’t notice the kitchen unless you’re using it,” says Cavin Costello, the couple’s architect. “But it still has all the firepower.” The Hecklers spent about $125,000 on the kitchen, including nearly $4,000 on a built-in Miele coffee maker, with sensors that detect the height of the cup being filled. They planned their project with automation in mind, and everything from their irrigation system to their house locks and lights can be controlled by Apple HomeKit and Siri. A high-tech standout: their Steinway piano, which can record Mrs. Heckler’s performances to an app, where her compositions can then be edited. It can also play on its own on command. “You can treat the piano like a HomePod,” says Mr. Heckler. For a Wisconsin couple, who wanted the kitchen in their Maui vacation home to be modern but not complicated, an innovative element is used to accent traditional touches. The couple, working with Chicago designer Mick De Giulio, spent about $380,000 on the kitchen, which includes expensive wood detailing, mixing wenge and smoked-Eucalyptus veneers with solid Monkey Pod, a locally grown hardwood. Mr. De Giulio designed the $12,000 LED light fixture to complement the various finishes. LED lighting was once too harsh, he says, but the latest generation “gives off a really nice light that is complementary to wood grains.” The humble toaster got an upgrade last year from Revolution Cooking, a Massachusetts-based company whose touch-screen smart toaster uses a quick-heating alloy to flash-toast and evenly brown while holding in moisture. Europeans in select markets can now buy a new countertop Bosch cooking appliance called the Cookit that uses sensors to perfect a range of cooking functions, from evenly reheating leftovers to searing a steak. Miele has recently introduced a whole new kind of oven, called the Dialog Oven, which uses electromagnetic waves to cook closely placed foods with differing energy levels. The company likes to show off the technology by cooking a fish in a block of ice. The oven can cook a roast in an hour, while a nearby pan of vegetables stays al dente. Up-to-date kitchen appliances are key in the latest home-sales market, says Michael Harper, an agent with Boston’s of MGS Group Real Estate. He says a suite of new Sub-Zero Wolf kitchen appliances is a star selling point for a single-family Back Bay townhouse that dates to the 1890s. The four-bedroom, seven-bathroom home, which just underwent a gut renovation, has an asking price of $9.995 million. “Luxury buyers want what they want, and they want it now,” he says, of the turnkey kitchen, which has an island covered in Italian Paonazzo marble, with a honed finish meant to resist stains. While the pandemic is boosting current sales, kitchen companies are looking to the future. Bosch is researching induction surfaces that may one day do away with stovetops entirely, letting you turn select surfaces into potential burners. Agrilution, a Miele subsidiary, is now marketing small vertical farm units, called Plantcubes, for growing herbs and greens. Robotic devices already have a place in American kitchens thanks to iRobot, the Massachusetts company that introduced the robotic vacuum cleaner in 2002, and, a decade later, the robotic mop. (In Phoenix, the Hecklers, use the company’s latest vacuum model, the self-emptying Roomba s9 to help keep dog hair to a minimum.) Colin Angle, iRobot’s CEO, foresees kitchen robots will next be used to take care of other menial tasks, such as loading and unloading dishwashers. Howie Choset, a professor of Robotics at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, has his doubts about humanoid robots as servants-of-the-future. But he does see a growing role for machine-learning technology to help out with cooking technique, citing a potential future smartphone app. Prof. Choset, part of a team doing kitchen-related robotics research in conjunction with the Culinary Institute of America, believes the app may be only a year or two away. He sees cooks perfecting their slicing, dicing, braising and basting, while the camera on their smartphone tracks their technique, and voice-equipped technology shouts out pointers—comparing their actions with those of an expert chef. Back in his own kitchen, Prof. Choset says he is still working on the basics. “I just learned to cook oatmeal,” he says.
