Joker out are announcing the release of their third studio album 'Souvenier Pop'!

At Jutranji ritem (Morning Rhythm) on Radio Celje we were visited by the members of the Slovenian band Joker Out - Bojan, Kris, Jan, Nace and Jure. The boys, who won the hearts of Slovenian and foreign fans with their unique style and energy, shared with us their interesting stories and moments from European stages, where they have enthralled at festivals, such as the legendary Sziget.

We talked about the impact that Eurovision had on their further creation, and how their dreams about big stages became a reality. They unveiled to us some fun adventures from abroad including an unusual moment in Finland that made one of their hits go viral.

On the 15th of November we are expecting their new album 'Souvenir Pop', which will offer musical hits in Slovene, Serbo-Croatian and English alike. In the capital city there are also two concerts scheduled with the release of the new album. You can also hear their new song 'Bluza' on Radio Celje.

Host: With us today are Bojan, Kris, Nace, Jure, and Jan, the most popular Slovenian band, Joker Out. Welcome to Radio Celje.

Joker Out: Hi! Hello! Hey, hey, hey!

Bojan: Thank you very much!

I knew it, I said it wrong. You’re not the most popular Slovenian band…

Bojan: Absolutely, yes.

…but European band. A band known world-wide.

Joker Out: Wooow.

Now tell me, did Eurovision leave an impression?

Jure: No.

Bojan: Eh, no, nothing much, really, I think. Eurovision really made the 180 degree turn for us. Before it, we didn’t have any concerts abroad, or we played a concert in Croatia but for a Slovenian audience. Eurovision has brought us the opportunity to suddenly be performing all across Europe and we’re performing for foreign audiences, which is crazy.

Because you’re made for the big stages. At a festival in the middle of Budapest you really caused a stir, right? But you’ve always been dreaming about this stage.

Kris: That’s true. You are talking about the Main stage at Sziget. It’s a stage, for which we always said that if there was one thing we would never be able to achieve in our lives, it was Sziget main stage. I was there for the first time as a listener in 2018, watching all of my favourite artists up there and it was… I tried to imagine what it was like to look at the crowd from the other side, but I just couldn’t. Now I know what it’s like. And it’s quite a weird feeling. Still.

Weird?

Kris: Good, but weird. It’s never the way you imagine it.

Cool, we’re really happy that we caught you in our area, too, because you, you don’t stop. You’re a Band with a capital B. You travel…

Bojan: Just superlatives.

Yeah, just superlatives. You weren’t just in Budapest. You were also in Romania, in Slovakia. Where have you been and where else are you going?

Bojan: We’ve been to Finland, Poland, Great Britain, and Spain the most.

Kris: The Netherlands.

Bojan: In the Netherlands. We were in Lithuania twice, once in Latvia, once in Estonia.

Kris: Six times in Germany.

Bojan: Six times in Germany, three times in Sweden.

Jan: Have you said Great Britain and Ireland? Belgium, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia.

Bojan: Croatia absolutely.

Nace: Italy.

Bojan: Macedonia.

Kris: We’ll name all the countries in the EU now.

Jure: Yes.

Kris: Every single country.

Bojan: Austria.

Jan: You’ve said Norway and Sweden?

Alright, alright.

Bojan: No, I didn’t, Norway, well, I’ve mentioned Sweden.

And you also mentioned Finland.

Bojan: Finland, I did.

We heard something unexpected happened in Finland, which affected your recognisability. Actually, how viral one of your hits went.

Bojan: Yes! Okay, that was quite the genius moment. Namely, I finished ‘Šta bih ja’ before the Stockholm concert. No, what am I saying, sorry, in Helsinki and I wasn’t 1000% sure I’d sing the chorus correctly, so I wrote it on a piece of paper, in a big font, and gave it to our technician Kiki, and asked if he could please stick it onto the front monitor speaker so that I could look at it. And I asked him 35 times. “Did you stick it on?” “I stuck it on.” “Okay, great.” I get on stage, darn, I can’t see the paper anywhere. I look at the monitor on the left, the one on the right, nothing. I’m checking, if he might’ve mixed it up and hung it on a speaker somewhere, the sheet is nowhere to be found. And two songs before 'Šta bih ja’, I step to the very front part of the stageand I look down, and I see that when the champ hung it up, he did it on the other side of the monitor, so the audience was reading the lyrics, not so I could see it. And then what happened? People thought it was on purpose, a 'sing along’ moment, karaoke. Everyone took pictures, filmed it, posted it online, the lyrics of a new song that was yet to come out. Anyway, we finished the concert. I remember we ran to the van from backstage, I opened my phone, and the lyrics were already on Genius. So, all the lyrics were already written out: the original, in Serbian, translated into English, and it was an hour after the concert ended. And from that concert on, already the very next day, because we performed in Helsinki again the next day, the whole crowd was already singing the song. It was crazy. It went viral on TikTok, totally, so Kiki, hats off to you. Of course, because I looked at that and told Kiki, “Give me my lyrics back.” and it was so much worse, because Kiki then took off the lyrics in front of everyone and put it on the correct side of the monitor, so I was able to read it.

Kris: You know, the craziest part about it to me is that the Finns, because the crowd was majority Finnish, they realised the lyrics were in Serbian, that it was something they hadn’t heard from us yet. To me that’s, you know…

Bojan: Yeah, of course.

Kris: Imagine you read something in Finnish, how will you know it’s something you haven’t read yet, or heard?

Bojan: Well, if it’s not… ♪ Rankka viikko ja paljon pitkii päiviä takan ♪

Kris: Yeah, yeah. That’s just, that’s so crazy to me.

Jan: It’s actually funny, that some fan probably knew the lyrics to the song before you did. No.

Bojan: It’s definitely possible.

Jan: It wouldn’t be impossible.

Kris: It’s not impossible.

You have tons of fans, what is the most unbelievable, or most awesome thing that a fan did for you?

Bojan: There’s a lot of things like that.

Jure: I think about those hoodies we got.

Jure: Those were nice. Everyone got their own hoodie.

Kris: In their own color.

Jure: Their own color, I just know I had Captain Maček written in the front here and SSF airlines in the back.

Bojan: Everyone got an embroidered, hand embroidered, signature, what’s the word…

Kris: Personalised.

Bojan: A personalised shirt.

Nace: Although, among all of these fan gifts, the most beautiful was the one in Stožice, where the fans had planned amongst themselves, and before the concert, they handed out these colorful triangles with instructions to to put it over the phone flashlight during 'Novi val’. And suddenly, the whole arena was in colorful lights.

Jure: And we didn’t know that.

Bojan: It was, it was… Amazing. Because we, I remember, that when 'Novi val’ started, the whole arena lit up in colorful lights and then we got off stage and started asking everyone in the crew who did it, because it’s a massive project, to hand 12,000 people colorful lights, which we thought they did. And really, it was the fans, walking around before the concert, and handing out these papers actually, and the instructions to put these ligh… I mean, there’s been a lot of these beautiful fan projects. With 'Metulji’ they made paper butterflies and handed them out, so everyone lifted their butterflies up. And that was also abroad.

Jan: In Warsaw.

Bojan: It happened in Warsaw. I mean, we have awesome fan projects, we have this group, Joker Out Subs, which is a group of fans that actually, in already a very organised way, translate all the Slovenian content into, Idon’t know, dozens of languages, worldwide. And they actually go online, find the interviews, conversations, guest appearances in shows, whatever, and they spring into action. And in a couple of days it's… I’m also sure that… It’s not impossible that this interview, for example, will be translated into 10 or 15 languages with subtitles.

What was an unusual, wild thing, that you got on stage during a concert? And let’s not say just bras, now.

Bojan: A bottle of blueberry liquor… To the knee.

Jure: …to the knee.

Bojan: That was still… That was…

Jure: But years ago.

Bojan: …in Žiri. It happened in Žiri.

Bojan: Our bassist was hit by a bottle of blueberry liquor which is a lot better than the hammer that hit the previous band. I’ll never forget that.

Jure: Or was it an axe?

Bojan: Axe, hammer, something, I mean, bizarre. I got an ikebana. And that was awesome. I think I’ve already told this story. But that happened because a guy, from the middle of the tent, in Koper, if I’m not mistaken, held up that ikebana and pushed through the crowd and everyone was getting out of his way and he got to the front rows and gave me that ikebana.

Now, I won’t ask about which performance was most memorable because there’s probably so many that you wouldn’t know or be able to pick one out. So I picked one. And I’m interested in how it came to be that Ringo Starr’s grandson joined you on stage?

Bojan: Yeah, we met him in a pub, like how I’d assume, in London, you meet many people casually. And he’s really an awesome guy. We clicked immediately, his name is Louis. A great drummer, he also has his own band. Anyway, when we were talking about what to do at Shepherd’s Bush, which is a truly eminent venue in London, we kind of said, darn, it would be nice if someone could join us on stage, and that it’s casual, natural. So we asked Louis if he’d jump on stage. He said: “Yeah, let me get on with a tambourine.” So he happily hopped on stage, tambourine-d his part and went on his way.

Kris: They even had a drum battle.

Bojan: Even a drum battle, dude.

Kris: Percussion, percussion drum battle I’d say.

Bojan: On the congas.

Today, we’ll hear your new song, 'Bluza’. I got asked by a fan of yours, a friend of mine, to ask you if it’s conjugated correctly, this word, 'bluza’. Because in the song, Bojan says: “Noćas ti si moja muza, ja u ritmu tvoga BLUZA ću da plešem bez prestanka.” How’d you land on that?

Bojan: Yes. So the word “bluza” isn’t even connected to a blouse, like a shirt, a piece of clothing. “Bluz” (blues) is just blues as a musical genre.

Okay. Honestly, I don’t know, this whole time we’ve been… Was the name of the song a somehow natural progression from “bluza, bluza”, or what?

Kris: Yeah, it was muza bluza (blues muse).

Jure: I think it was “muza” (muse).

Bojan: It was “muza”, it was “muza”. Then we settled on “bluza”, so yeah, kind of a silly name if you think about it, but…

Kris: It doesn’t make sense, but somehow it makes sense.

But it’s cool, because you ask, right, what’s the point, really?

Bojan: Who or what is “bluza”?

Who among you is the laziest?

Bojan: Nobody in the band is lazy, definitely, as a personality trait, nobody’s lazy. But I feel like we all have these particular moments when everyone, how should I say… You know, when you have a phase, when it hits you, and then you’re the most… Personally, when everything gets too hard, I’d… I’m the laziest then. But like, I choose to be the laziest, because I just don’t want to, I refuse to move.

Jure: I could say just the opposite. I know Kris is the least lazy, or even when he should be lazy, he can’t be lazy, I believe.

Bojan: That’s for sure. Kris is a walking Excel timetable.

If you had to pick someone, and send him to a quiz show, I don’t know, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” Who would you pick, who’s the smartest?

Kris: It’s not about smarts, it’s more like who has the most knowledge, in my opinion.

Knowledgeable. Yeah, exactly.

Kris: I wouldn’t pick myself, for sure.

Jure: The Millionaire?

Kris: I bet Jan would know the answers.

Nace: Yeah, I’m leaning towards Jan as well.

Jure: I think I’d rely on luck.

Kris: I think I’d ask the audience for help. Jan would take his time to answer the question, but the answer would be correct, I think.

Jan: Why wouldn’t you pick yourself? I can totally see you.

Who’s the best cook?

Bojan: Jan.

Kris: Yes.

Jan: Or Jure.

Kris: Jure too, especially if it’s a barbecue, Jure. If it’s more like kitchen stuff, some risotto or pasta, I’d trust Jan.

Nace: But we’re all pretty decent cooks, to be fair. None of us…

Bojan: None of us would leave anyone hungry, let’s put it that way.

Jure: We love to cook and eat our own food.

November 15th?

Jure: A new cooking show.

Nace: Cooking with Jokers!

Bojan: On November 15th, our third studio album comes out, called 'Souvenir Pop’. It’s our third studio album, and fourth album overall, because last year we released the Live album from Stožice. This album will have ten songs, four of which you’ve already heard, which are 'Carpe Diem’, 'Everybody’s Waiting’, 'Šta bih ja’, and Bluza.’ So the remaining six are a mystery, for now. It’s an interesting album, we see it as a collection of memories from the last year and a half that we’ve gathered. And just like places and people are different, and everything else we’ve seen is different, the songs are different as well, so it’s a really diverse album, without, I’d say, a prominent common thread. There are three languages on it, Slovenian, Serbian, and English, so it’s really colourful.

This will be a perfect Christmas gift or for the New Year.

Bojan: Yeah, exactly, exactly. For Christmas, you should all be singing this instead of ‘Last Christmas.’

A music video tomorrow? On Friday?

Joker Out: Yes.

Kris: Yes, it’s true, the video is coming out for the single ‘Bluza,’ which has been released three weeks ago already, but we decided it deserves a music video as well, and we took a little more time, but I think we really put in the effort, and made a really unique video, something you haven’t seen from us yet, you haven’t seen anything remotely similar from us, and I doubt you’ll see anything like it again. And we have some cool hidden guests, in the video, well, for now they’re still hidden.

Now that the initial anger is over from last night, I have some thoughts.

I really think the anger should be directed at the juries and how Eurovision is ran, not Loreen. Yes, she made the decision to run in nationals, but she also could've just not been picked. There's also been precedent for winners trying again.

However there has NOT been a precedent for how the jury voted. I've seen some people compare last year, with Ukraine, to this year, but that doesn't really work when you realize they gave Sweden 148 MORE votes. Ukraine still had a decent chance at not winning, if the popular vote wasn't absolutely through the roof.

I've also seen people compare this to the polish nationals, and while that's a little more warranted, it still feels weird. The TVP literally changed the rules three days before the contest, and Blanka knew she was going to win well before the contest. I don't think we've seen any proof of collusion with Loreen, so unless a bombshell is dropped, I don't think it was part of some master plan by her.

All that said, for the first couple years I was into Eurovision, I thought Verka had won. So keep supporting Finland, keep being mad at the juries, and let the world know who the public's winner really is.

Barbara Pravi - “Voilà”

France going from 3rd last on my ranking / likely last place in the finale to 8th place in the ranking / probably top 3 in the Grand Final. 😍 WHAT A GLOW-UP.

So, “Voilà” is epic, obviously. Yeah I will skip the theatrics, each and every one of you know this song and we all know it’s probably the best French entry in ages. 

Funnily enough, I didn’t care for “Voilà” when I first heard it lmfao. It felt similar to the song Patricia Kaas went to Eurovision with and while “Et s’il faillait le faire” has its fans, I was never one of them. Worse, the internet immediately resorted to refering to “Voilà” as a “masterpiece” which is probably the pretentious statement you can make about Eurovision songs. Guys, it’s an Edith Piaf-inspired tribute act. Calm the eff down. Still, even at this early a stage I was instantly charmed by Barbara’s introspection and pluck even if I didn’t care for the music at first. After all, Barbara was the mastermind behind jesc HITS “Bim bam toi” and “J’imagine” and if she wants to bring a song that puts HER SELF at the forefront, she’s perfectly entitled to do so. About fucking time. On top of that, I thought the ending was sublime, even in studio version. “Why can’t the entire song be like that”, I thought. And then, E:CVQD arrived and Barbara SERVED, OUTSOLD, SLAYED, etc every superlative under the sun. 

So remember when I aired my critique regarding Gjon? “Tout l’Univers” is an “Objectively Strong” composition in that it employs music theory to conjure up a song that sounds impressive on first listen. But behind that academic skill lies virtually nothing of interest. I cannot connect with it beyond a base level because what does it tell me about Gjon or his story? Technique without a heart or a soul is merely pretense. But I suppose it can sound sophisticated to someone who doesn’t know what “sophistication” is. 

Barbara, however. Countless articles and news reports published and broadcast across the world celebrated her sudden rise to power as a "feminist victory" and praised Finland for its "progressiveness".

Marin's premiership has clearly been perceived by many in Finland and beyond as a manifestation of Nordic gender equality. But is Finland really that unique for having a young, female leader? And more importantly, is having a woman leader definitive proof that a country reached gender equality?

According to this measure, Pakistan, a country often branded "deeply conservative" and "patriarchal" and even considered one of the most dangerous in the world for women, for example, was seemingly as progressive as Finland over 30 years ago when Pakistanis elected a 35-year-old woman, Benazir Bhutto, as their prime minister.

Back then, Bhutto was not only the youngest prime minister in the world but also the first Muslim woman to hold a country's highest office. In contrast, Finland got its first and only female president a decade later in 2000 and the first female prime minister in 2003.

And Pakistan was not the only "conservative", predominantly Muslim nation to beat "progressive" Finland to electing a female head of state. Khaleda Zia became the first female prime minister of Bangladesh in 1991 and Tansu Ciller was elected Turkey's prime minister in 1993.

Other nations that are part of the global south, and that are similarly perceived in the West as "dangerous" or "hostile" to women, had female leaders even earlier. After her father was hanged by military dictator Zia ul-Haq in 1979, she started to lead the struggle for the reinstatement of democracy in the country. But if not for her political family, elite status and the feudal nature of the Pakistani society, she may never have made it as far.

Bhutto undeniably faced additional obstacles during her two terms in office because of her gender and had to navigate pressure from conservative forces that did not want to submit to a woman's authority. But was Bhutto's election as prime minister a real victory for women in Pakistan? Did she use her status as leader to elevate and empower women in the country?

Moreover, she arguably contributed to the oppression of women in neighbouring Afghanistan by choosing to recognise the repressive, anti-women Taliban regime there.

Marin, on the other hand, comes from a working-class background. She managed to rise to the top because her country offers free, quality education to every child living there and has a political system (unlike Pakistan) where a lack of money and connections do not hinder one's chances of becoming prime minister.

Moreover, Finland has an excellent track record when it comes to women's presence in the workforce, access to education and political representation. Pakistan, on the other hand, remains abysmally low in these rankings.

None of this, however, means Finland is a feminist utopia and Pakistan is a dangerous country where women can never feel safe.

The situation in both countries is a lot more complex than that.

Despite all the stereotypes, not all sections of Pakistan's diverse society are hostile to women. There are pockets of liberalism in the society that are rarely seen in the West - the lifestyle of the educated elite is strikingly similar to the West and there are families even in the lower ranks of the society that believe in educating their daughters and giving them the freedom to control their own lives. Many Pakistani women are also breaking stereotypes by working in male-dominated professions such as the police.

These may be exceptions to the rule but the entire country should not be painted with the same brush.

Meanwhile, Finland's fight for gender equality is most certainly not complete and the country is not free of gendered oppression, violence and discrimination.

First of all, its political history is dominated by men - it was only in the late 1990s and early 2000s that the number of female ministers in the country started to slowly climb up from almost zero. And, earlier this year, the pregnancy of a female minister, Annika Saarikko, while in office in Finland became a hot topic of discussion.

Even in a so-called progressive society such as Finland, some thought that her giving birth while in office would hinder her ability to carry out her duties. In Pakistan, Bhutto had a baby while in office back in 1990 without any significant controversy.

While Finland continues to be celebrated as some kind of paradise for women, the alarmingly high rates of rape and domestic violence in the country are often ignored. Nearly 50 percent of women and girls above the age of 15 have experienced physical or sexual violence, according to a recent report. In fact, a 2014 study found Finland to be the second-most violent country in the EU for women.

Moreover, Finland did not actually elect Marin as prime minister. She was selected for the post by her party following the resignation of Antti Rinne. Had there been an actual election in Finland, there would most probably now be an anti-feminist, nationalist government in power. Marin's Social Democrat Party would not have won as it did in April this year.

Much like everywhere else in the West, anti-immigration sentiment has been on the rise in Finland in recent years. The Islamophobia exhibited by such political forces usually goes hand-in-hand with opposition to feminism or even outright hatred of women. In the last parliamentary elections, the highest number of votes went to Jussi Halla-aho, leader of the Finns Party, which is known for its anti-immigration stance.

The party's youth wing has declared itself to be anti-feminist because it believes feminism is harmful to society, and Halla-aho himself has openly hoped that supporters of the green left would be targeted by rapists. His party is now the most popular one in Finland, according to recent polls.

This, perhaps more than Marin's premiership, should tell us something about the political climate in Finland. It is a patriarchal society in which more and more people there seem to think that feminism has gone "too far". But all of this somehow gets buried in the celebratory news coverage surrounding Marin.

Undoubtedly, during such times in Finland, Marin's premiership is symbolically important, given that she embodies almost everything parties like the Finns love to hate.

She is bound to face fierce opposition and it remains to be seen what her government's actual contributions to gender equality and anti-racism will be.

The symbolical importance of having young female politicians come to power deserves to be celebrated, but context matters. Having a woman lead a country does not automatically mean that women are faring well there.

New Look Sabres: GM 69 - DAL - Nice

Writing these is starting to get easier. It was fun before it became clear this team wasn’t making the playoffs. Then these last several weeks, really since the New Year has been excruciating. I’m saying this now, but Carolina is next and that may make me hate passionately again. For tonight we have the 69th game of this season to talk about. NNNNIIIICCCCCEEEE. The big storylines going into this one other than the teamwork number were Jack Eichel’s suspension and Alex Nylander’s call up. Feeling the lack of Jack in this game was kind of like taking your pants off and getting upset you feel a breeze. It’s over and we all know it, Jack can’t save us now. One of my favorite Sabres follows on twitter compared watching this team right now to the height of his days smoking weed. He just feels so lethargic he’s basically immune to stimuli watching this club right now. It’s hard to not relate to that. Not the smoking weed part, but to each his own I guess. The lethargic part is relatable while also being so beyond disappointing. How many times have we said it? They won ten games straight and now they’re missing the playoffs. They’re the second team ever to do that. Remember when we were pausing discos and shouting in bars over this team? Feels like a lifetime ago. Let’s talk about Alex Nylander. Remember when we declared him a lost cause at the end of last season? Remember when Jason Botterill sat him down at the Prospect Tournament way back in September and then he caught fire? Remember when he didn’t make the NHL roster out of camp anyway? He’s 21 now and the apology I gave him for not believing he would prove himself at Training Camp now seems like a distant memory. He played with no urgency tonight. That sounds like a generic complaint and it is because I read it on twitter forty times since the game ended but I say prove it to me again! The thing is Nylander was doing good in Rochester, at least lately he has. Watching his development down there has been an evolution of finding his stride. He took a little while, but he’s found his way down there and was beginning to contribute at a decent clip. Does he just take this long to find his way into a system? Gee, I hope not. That would be a big problem but then again he is only 21 and tonight was against one of the better defensive teams in the league. But then again, he was taken in the first round and there’s already no way that pick will feel right with who else went in the first round that year. I side more with the people who thinks he needs to be something soon or get the Guhle treatment. I hate to say that because sometimes it takes some time for a player to become the player they can be but look at the Justin Bailey trade. That hurt, he had real potential at one point but the he had become nothing more than an AHL regular and only ok in that role at that. He left in an AHL deal that brought in Taylor Leier who is now a strategic part of an Americans team getting hot at just the right time. That may seem like a weird comparison but tell me one reason Alexander Nylander isn’t the new Justin Bailey right now? Go ahead, I’ll wait. The bottom line is Nylander needs to figure it out now or he WILL be next season’s Justin Bailey. Hell, he might be this summer’s Justin Bailey.

I just wrote a whole paragraph on Alexander Nylander in March. Yay. I teased you with some Amerks talk there and it looks like our last Amerks Angle of the regular season will be shaping up soon. I need to wait until at least after this weekend. Rochester is taking on the League leading Charlotte Checkers in a back-to-back that has revenge potential and the possibility of catapulting our Amerks to the top of the league standings! For Estonia, Glory Is Only A Song Away

August 20th, 2016: Estonia celebrated its 25th year of independence - the longest period as a sovereign state in its nation's history. The moment was important for the country, who have, since that day 25 years ago, sought to democratize, diversify their economy, and build relations with their neighbors, all within the context of their independent, unique identity. In the initial years shortly after gaining independence, Estonia chose to work closely with neither the United States nor Russia; instead, they looked towards their Nordic neighbors Sweden and Finland, as well as fellow Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania, prioritizing these relationships at first, and then considering broader relations (Russia and Germany have since become important trading partners). The results are markedly impressive: an advanced technological infrastructure, where citizens can file their taxes and even vote online, free education, and universal healthcare.

Perhaps even more impressive is the low public debt the country has incurred in the process, focusing on tight fiscal policy. Despite being a small country, Estonia's commitment to responsible economic and environmental policy, combined with its promise to protect the rights of their people while extending their quality of life, is genuinely impressive: Estonia's GDP is on track to match its Nordic neighbors by 2025. This continuing track record did not come easy for Estonia — following the global financial crisis of the late 2000s, Estonia suffered 2 years of negative GDP growth. However, they recovered from the recession in 2010, maintaining GDP growth comparable to before the economic crisis. Barring a brief dip in 2013, the trend of positive GDP growth has not ceased since.

In general, Estonia has striven to position themselves as a major player in the European theater not only socioeconomically, but culturally as well. Since 1994, Estonia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual contest where (mostly) European countries compete in a grand spectacle of music and performance. Estonia's success since their debut has been mixed; however, they have won the contest once, back in 2001. Estonia's win in 2001 was unexpected, bringing with it several firsts: the first Post-Soviet nation to win the contest. The first Baltic nation to win the contest. The first - and as of 2017, only - black person to win the contest. Concerns about their ability to finance and host the contest were quelled when Tallinn, the nation's capital, successfully hosted the contest the next year.

Since 2009, Estonian television broadcaster ERR has hosted Eesti Laul (Estonian Song in Estonian), an annual song contest to decide their Eurovision entry. Modeled after the long-running and popular Swedish song contest Melodifestivalen, Eesti Laul provides twenty hopeful musical acts the opportunity to represent their country. The popularity of the contest has found itself growing year by year, with the 2016 contest pulling in the highest viewership to date (it's interesting to note, however, that ERR, the broadcaster who hosts Eesti Laul, declined to release exact viewership data). It's also a surprisingly apolitical contest, at least on Eurovision standards: in a country where the major parties are all centrist, rarely veering too far left or right, it makes sense that politics play only a nominal role in Eesti Laul, and are usually done in a broad and vague Eurocentric context.

Estonia is hungry for a victory this year: following much hype around their 2015 entry 'Goodbye to Yesterday', an acoustic number by Stig Rasta and Elina Born that earned them an impressive 7th place finish, 2016 proved to be disappointing, as their entry 'Play', performed by young crooner Juri Pootsman, failed to impress the European public, placing last in its placement pool. The result has continued an up-and-down tradition for Estonia this decade, whose overall performance since 2010 has been seen by and large as, to put this delicately, unpredictable.

Tomorrow, the ninth Eesti Laul final will take place. Currently, multi-genre singer Kerli is tipped as the favorite to win with her song 'Spirit Animal'. A product of her commitment to reconnecting to nature through audio-visual spectacle, the song has many elements that have proven successful in the past for Eurovision entries: ethnopop with electronic elements, an all-white visual aesthetic, and clean electronic background visuals - the results both comparable and contrasting Danish Emmelie de Forrest's winning song 'Only Teardrops' from the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. Kerli also has the opportunity to buck the trend of mixed results for Estonia. She comes into the contest with name recognition across Europe, two singles that topped the US Billboard Dance charts, and a forthcoming album that culminates her transition from dark goth to dance diva to naturalist.

This year's Eesti Laul contest is also contextualized at a time where a push for tourism in Estonia is starting to grow: not only did Estonia confirm their participation in Eurovision 2017 mere hours after the end of the 2016 contest, but they sold tickets to Eesti Laul 2017 well in advance of the contest in an oblique attempt to drum up tourism. This goes in conjunction with their 'Visit Estonia' Snapchat account, which allows a variety of Estonian citizens to take over the account for 24 hours and share a glimpse into their everyday lives and the landscapes, cities, cultures, and lifestyles of Estonia.

Estonia is approaching the Eesti Laul finals with the opportunity to prove a lot. A victory for Estonia will make a bold statement and testimony to their ideals and aspirations. In a year of national selection contests mired with controversy, and fans restless for content beyond ballads sung by 20-something women, Eesti Laul is, as it has in all prior years, celebrating the diversity of genres present among Estonian artists. But in the backdrop of what has happened in Estonia and Europe at large, that diversity seems to shine and stand out more than ever. Perhaps more importantly, a victory in Kiev will act as another point of proof of the progress they've achieved since their independence, to show an increasingly polarized Europe the importance of unity, diversity, understanding, mutual respect, and song - the very reasons for which the Eurovision Song Contest was at first conceived.
