Prongsfoot Week - Day 4

What type of story that you like to Read and/or Write for this ship?

This is a tricky one, because so much of it is good. I love canon compliant Prongsfoot and the horrific and heartbreaking potential of that. I haven't written it yet though, because ouch. I love stories where they start out best friends and it matters so much to them that they're terrified of pursuing anything sexual or romantic because what if it ruins the friendship? I love stories where they realise they're in love and they're so attuned to each other that's that - they get together. Then I love making it hard, making them question everything they know about themselves and the other now that this one thing has changed. I love pining, love when one of them falls before the other and hurts because of it.

Really though, I just love Prongsfoot and will read them in pretty much any story.

Prongsfoot Week 2024 Day 3

DAY 3 - 

New to Prongsfoot Week: Favorite Canon/Potentially Canon moment

A very simple answer is everyday Prongsfoot.

Platonic or romantic. I love slice of life and I just can't get enough of thinking about how the boys would be during their Hogwarts Year in the lessons, and in the Common Room and in their room. Plotting and pranking and falling in love with each other without even knowing it's happening.

And I do adore the little snippet about the two of them in Order Of The Phoenix, being chased on Sirius' bike by Muggle police officers. Elvendork and all. I just want to see them carefree and enjoying life, enjoying all those things that were so so shortlived for them.

You are so patient, I have been enjoying all your long and thoughtful replies to someone I'm not entirely sure is engaging in good faith. Especially since you don't write any of the things they're complaining about, so like why. 😭😭

I do think part of their problem is partially culture shock regarding divorce, in which case they can read fics that don't involve divorce! Lots of fics, especially yours, do write James and Sirius as together from the start without any prior relationships.

Their second problem, however, might have to do with James and Lily (who has it worse) being written in narrative to be fragments. They died too young to leave any trace and, like Harry, all we will ever know of them are fading reflections that can never be pieced together into a whole person. By the end of the series, anyone who has ever known James intimately as a person is gone. Lily has Petunia, but there truly is nothing left of James.

So all writers who want to write about either James or Lily have to work with conjectures and suppositions. Is James more selfish? Maybe, possibly. Is Lily a psycho? Maybe, possibly. Could James and Lily have the kind of relationship where they wake up one morning and say "This isn't working" and get amicably divorced? Maybe, possibly. Would they go scorch earth with each other instead? Maybe, possibly.

The truth is we don't know, there isn't enough so you can argue either way. They're not like Sirius, whom we know as a character and who is easier to explore. We can extrapolate from canon moments, from the recollections of their friends, but we will only ever be people piecing puzzles together and trying our best to get a full picture.

Ultimately it all depends on interpretation, and since anon is bound and determined to interpret all events in the worst way possible, uh... They can consider not reading canon-compliant fic, where Sirius pines (which is a thing that has been clocked by casual readers btw) and Jily have to breakup somehow. Or they can consider writing their own fic, it's ultimately the only way to read what you want to read.

Also i have read the small stories you wirte on the pair. I told you that i was talking about the long stories on Prongsfoot. It wasn't about the stories you write. THey are sweet and cute. I love them all. But then I go looking for long stories and don't like that the source of all angst is about made about sirius who is struggling more than James is. There it seems that James has it easy.

Also I wanted to clear that i am not against divorce. In fact I am pro for it. I meant that in the society around me, divorce has a reason. Like in your recent fic, Marlene felt that Sirius has always been in love with James and tried with her less etc. she felt cheated and wanted to hurt sirius. THis is the type of divorce I was talking aabout feels real. In comparision Jily divoice felt like they woke up one morning. Talked , they were on the same page, ready to divorce and co-parent harry and harry is all okay and chill with his parent's sepration. No one has gone through any emotional turmoil due to sepration. all is fine is dandy. Again, I am just using your story as an example because almost all the story with lily alive and jily divorce are based on the concep of a painless smooth jily divorce and that is what i was saying that if they were so good in communication, if they are so in link with each other, why divorce and not try more for the marriage. so it feels unreal- the being in each other's life - best friends and giving advices and being all chummy after divorce.

Also the serial you mentioned. I only have watched the initual episodes of 911 but that lady and thier kids are really effected by that man's coming out. The children are not readily acceptng. THe woman herself feels betrayed for a brief period. Later they may have reconcilefd etc but they have had a journey. Also i remeber that the lady married the man because her bilogical clock was ticking. Almost like the pact of marrying your freind after certain age. Jily is different because if canon way is chosen then at 20 they were not compromising by saddling with each other. They chose each other.

I think the grit is missing with jily break and divorce in Progsffot fandom. James and Lily behave too matures.

You don't have to reply for this. I was just really appreciative of the efforts it took for you to type that long reply and i wanted to explain my side of story a bit more.

WHat I said about James's maturity is that after those early years in stories that his struggles are over. WHat i meant when i said that i imagine him as a person who will have trouble maturing is because i think that he is the perfect mix of naive and optimistic to be like that. THe teenager who thinks that all problems are over once he reaches adulthood.thinking that being adult means having anwers to all problems. Etc.

What I mean that a James in his 30's has to have his own struggles with life. which are appropriate to experiece of a man that age which brings new obstacles and pains. Maybe Harry is entering his teen age where all kids begin hating their parents. Maybe he is having quarter life crisis. MAybe Lily is upset that he is asking for divorce when she is happy in her marriage life. Etc.

This is alos the issue, Lily is Petunia's sister. Petunia wanted to come accross as a settled woman with great life. SO, Lily being okay with divorce seems ooc.

Also I think i mentioned in my previous ask but i never said that SIruis is feminized. What i meant him taking that girly roles meant that in soap operas and in traditional romance stories, the girl is the one who is struggling and then the boy swoops in to save the day. A prongsfoot story in which James has no life problems and is chill feels like that. Not the best comparisiion but Prongsfoot angst is always heavy on Sirius's side that is why i drew the comparision.

So, yes this was all.

I know you said that I didn’t have to answer, but I felt compelled, too, because I’m genuinely curious - what WERE you hoping to get out of these asks?  

I’m also curious about why if you know that my stories genuinely don’t focus on the Sirius angst or struggling more than James, that you came to me?  

If you’re curious, I think Sirius angst comes from being Sirius fans first.  Some people like to torture their favs and Sirius has more page-time than James does.  We know him better from canon than we do James, so we tend to focus on him.   I also don’t think James has it easy.  He still has to deal with figuring out himself and breaking up his marriage (if he’s married, which isn’t easy), he still loses his parents and finds himself without that safety net.  My dad’s 62 and just lost his last parent recently and he’s been struggling - I can’t imagine losing both parents when he’s still technically a teen and not struggling with that.  That’s almost always there.

So, he has struggles.

So, you said that this wasn’t about a particular fic, but then you bring up “Fun in the Sun” - well, what you probably don’t know is that the prompt behind that fic was Sirius/Marlene have a terrible divorce while Jily have an amicable divorce.  James was always *meant* to help Sirius per the prompt and discussion with the artist.  It was written purposely to highlight the two different types of divorces, and I wanted to follow through with that concept because it’s what the artist wanted.  I don’t usually do divorce fic (or focus on it if I do) like I did in this fic.  Jily also divorced 3 years before SM did because Marlene dragged the divorce out to punish Sirius.  So, yeah, Jily is friends and have had an easy time co-parenting because it’s been going on for *years* all the growing pains that initially happened, already happened.  

This was a Prongsfoot fic, I don’t care about Jily’s divorce, it was a plot device.  That’s it.  And like, that’s another thing with Prongsfoot Long-fics that deal with Jily divorce.  We aren’t here to focus on Jily - we’re here for Prongsfoot, so why would we bother having the ‘emotional turmoil’ especially when the divorce happened years before.

Yes, Athena/Micheal struggle at first in 9-1-1, but if you were to look at the middle/end of S2, they’re perfectly fine.  Which is approximately a year or two into the divorce - which is where Jily was during this fic.  So, yeah, no there’s no reason for there to be issues - again, that was part of the prompt.

Again - we’re not here for Jily, so maybe there’s no grit, but that’s not why we are Prongsfoot fans, so… Sorry?  Not, Sorry.  If you don’t want Jily divorce, you can always filter it out.  A03 is amazing for filters :)

Like I said, James’ struggles are subjective.  Sometimes the fic just focuses more than one thing than another and like that’s up to the writer, if it’s not your cup of tea - that’s cool, you can always write your own?

I usually don’t get into Lily’s head much, ‘cause again I’m here for Prongsfoot - over 400 fics tells you that - Although sometimes I have them share James (I bet you’d really love those fics :) ). Anyhoo, maybe she is struggling or maybe she feels relief.  But I can’t imagine why you think Petunia’s views on Divorce have any impact on her sister’s?  ‘Cause like, siblings can have different views - I know I have four siblings and ain’t none of us agree on nothing.  :)3

Lily’s view on divorce is highly subjective since we know so little about her.  But she doesn’t seem like the type to stay in an unhappy marriage and forcing someone to stay always leads to unhappiness.  

I never said you said he was feminized, although I think you did?  What you’re saying here is suggesting that he’s a “damsel in distress” and needs a hero - which is a) very sexist and b) just not true.  Sirius is a badass in every Prongsfoot fic I have ever read.  I can’t speak for every fic in existence but Fuck man, struggling and having support from James is not the same thing as being the heroine that waits around for her hero to save her - and even if that was the case… the implication that he’s girly for it really grinds my gears.

Anyway, we focus on Sirius and angsting him because he’s easier to angst since we know more about him, but if you don’t like that - that’s okay, you can always write what you wanna read.

ProngsfootWeek Day 2: What’s your favorite type of Prongsfoot Story?  And if you’ve written it - link it?

I pretty much love any Sirius/James story that I come across. But broadly speaking my utmost favs are the getting together (or getting back together) with some kind of B plot of Sirius and James being their usual brilliant selves.

All the unresolved sexual tension, the pining, the longing, the heartache that comes with being so close to each other... but its just not close enough - I can't get enough of it. I don't even really mind what's keeping them apart whether its external factors, their own differences in what they want out of a relationship, one or both being obvious to their feelings or misunderstandings. I particularly love a canon divergent AU, where its still set in the magical world, but S&J don't yk die tragically (although in saying this I love a well done muggle AU too).

I think anyone who has read even one or two of my fics already knows all of this lol. 95% of the fics I write centre on this trope (? or is it a structure?) . The closest I've come to writing a proper prongsfoot slow burn, getting together fic is this one.

Luckily for me, it seems to be a fairly popular in prongsfoot, so there are a lot of stories of this kind already published that I adore.

ProngsfootWeek DAY 1 - When and why did you begin to ship Prongsfoot?  What makes you ship it?

I'm gonna get personal and negative under cut so read the tags first.

I checked the earliest bookmarked Prongsfoot fic I have on AO3 and it is from late 2020.

Early 2020 was the time my interest in hp reemerged. I always like Sirius and I was shipping wolf/star around that time and started my first fic on AO3, blackbody (radiation), an ongoing gen fic with side Wolf/star (I swear I'll update sometime this year). I was reading WoIf/star fics like crazy but I hated all the James hate or Remus being the most important person in Sirius's life or the mischaracterization of Sirius...

Anyway, I started reading Prongsfoot fanfics (almost all of them) and it was downhill after that. Because all the James love I needed was there with a good Sirius characterization (really I love you Prongsfoot writers) and a more realistic Mara/uders dynamic.

While I loved hp as a child, I always disliked its racist undertones. And after jkr started being transphobic on main, I considered the death of author and continue to enjoy the fandom. But jkr continued being racist and transphobic and I stopped doing that as well. I reduced hp content on my blog. While I still give likes to fanarts, I no longer reblog them. My previous love for Wolf/star is also fading mostly because of fanon-Remus characterization.

But I cannot let go of Prongsfoot. I just love them so much. I love James, I love Sirius, and I love both together. Sometimes with Harry, sometimes with Lily (OT3 ❤), but mostly by themself having the best of their life with no Major Character Death tag associated.

I love them because they have the range: friends to lovers, mutual pining, idiots in love, be gay do crimes, soulmates, an unshakable bond... For both, the world revolves around the other, their favorite person is each other, and it is so compelling to me. They would die for each other, they make each other better, they make each other worse, they are perfect for each other. And also because (against the will of the creator) they were good. Two privileged boys who chose to fight against their socioeconomic interests.

I am constantly daydreaming about them, I want to write about them. I want to read a million fics about their first kiss. I want to gush at other people's fics (no really, thank you all fanfic writers, I owe my mental well-being to you).

So yeah, I live in the fringe of the fandom, lurking around, and once in a blue moon, I post a fic. I hope a few of you enjoy my lowly contributions.

Favorite Tropes for Prongsfoot:

Before I start listing my favourite tropes, I'd like to mention that I love smitten James. In most works it is Sirius who is totally heart-eyed even though that James is in love with him as well. I like it the other way round a.k.a James an absolute goner for Sirius. That being said, here is my list:

1.Slow burn

 I know it means a multi-chaptered fic with a must patience for the reader but prongsfoot slow burn is a delight. Especially if it is well-written. It is worth the wait of every chapter to be updated. 

2.time travel/time loop

I mostly like time loop but time travel is also a delight. 

3. Hanahaki

OH.MY.GOD . Give me Hanahaki every day and I will never get tired of it. Such potential for angst and drama and absolute deep romance. Sadly I have not seen a lot of it in prongsfoot, one or two maybe. 

4. James lives/James returns AU 

Ok, I seriously love this one. How Sirius totally breaks into pieces from happiness and James being overwhelmed by it…so precious. 

5. Black madness 

This one I can't express how much I love. My guilty pleasure when it comes to prongsfoot.  @jmagnabo92

Prongsfoot Week 2024 day 3

Favorite Canon/Potentially Canon moment - IE, something like Sirius comforting James after the DADA OWL and Lily’s reaction or (even though it’s platonic) the moment James asked Sirius to be Harry’s godfather.  

I think, because I am a sucker for angst, it might be Sirius's best man speech at the wedding. This all falls under potentially canon, heavy on the potentially. But I imagine Sirius was in love with James, and James loved Sirius. Because there's just no world where they don't love each other. It's just that James loved Lily too, and in the 70s/80s one of them was a more acceptable choice than the other. And it never really hit him that what he was doing with Sirius wasn't exactly fitting within the box of 'best friends'. He just loved Sirius, and that would always be true. And then his parents got sick and wanted to see him happy before they died, and James wanted to have them there for as much as possible, and he'd never questioned what his future would be and he didn't then either. He'd always known he'd marry a beautiful woman and have children to run around the house with their toy wands. And he did love Lily.

Sirius loved James in every way someone can love someone else. So it wasn't even a choice for him; if he didn't get to have James romantically he would take the pain of that rather than give up all the rest of it. He didn't tell James he would never love someone else. He didn't tell James he was in love in the first place. Instead, he encouraged James to go after Lily. Because Sirius loved James in every way someone can love someone else, and more than anything he wanted James to be safe and happy out in the sunshine. And he could only ever have the shadows with Sirius. Something hidden and shameful and illegal. And they could be best friends. Sirius loved him like that too, and it could be enough. Only, as one does, James's speech at the wedding was all about how lucky he was to be marrying his best friend and when Sirius stood up to speak not long after he could only hope everyone would believe the tears were just nostalgia and happiness for his friend.

I imagine he stood up and looked down at the man he loved, and the wife that Sirius had grown to care for. I imagine he wished them well, and meant it with his whole heart. I imagine he told stories about James asking Lily out and being turned down, about how James grew up and they actually got to know one another. I imagine he spoke about James's nerves before the first date, and didn't mention that Sirius sucked him off to soothe them. I imagine he didn't say how that was the last time they ever did anything like it, that he didn't say how much he wished the world was different and he could be the one in white. I imagine there wasn't a dry eye in the room, I imagine Sirius sighed with relief that they were all smiling too. I imagine he looked at Lily and asked her to take care of James for him. And I imagine if he'd looked at James he would have seen the heartbreak as he realised Sirius loved him in every way a person can love someone else, which James hadn't known until that very moment was even an option.

They move into their flat after Hogwarts and realise with horror that they have to feed themselves now. They don't know how to do that so they get cookbooks and try. They live off beans on toast and leftovers from Sunday dinner at the Potters' for a few weeks until they get the hang of it. They both cook, though they prefer doing it together because that's how they learned.

Who’s the messiest?

Depends on the vehicle. If it's the motorcycle it's Sirius, if it's their brooms it's James. They like the open air too much for a car.

Sirius, but James usually ends up eating it

DAY 2 - 

New to Prongsfoot Week: What Headcanons do you have for this ship?  IE, things like, James made the first move or Sirius got James into crosswords.  Anything really. Okay, this is gonna be no answer at all, but I actually have no constant HC for them. This is probably true for any other ship I like, but depending on the fic I'm writing or the kind of scenario I'm dreaming up, the HC will change? Does it even make sense? I might have individual HC for each character, but barely a thing for ships. I guess their dynamics doesn't change but that's more a question of their characters interacting with each other than headcanons. Now I'm actually curious. Like guys what are your constant HC for prongsfoot in any universe? Can you spam me?

ProngsfootWeek DAY 1 - When and Why did you begin to Ship Prongsfoot?  What makes you Ship it?

Sirius/James is without a doubt the ship I have circled back to the most. I have fanfics I wrote all the way back in 2009 for them (all incomplete, and horribly written I am sure, but they are there :P).

I’ve seen it said that friends to lovers is a bit boring, but I beg the differ with these two. Despite the limited page time, I think Sirius and James have quite clear characterisations and are two of the most compelling individuals in the series.

James was a bit spoilt, bigheaded and arrogant, but also charismatic, energic, optimistic, able to find light and humour even in the darkest of moments, steadfast in his belief of right and wrong, endlessly loyal to his loved ones, generous with his wealth, time and own life. He was brash with a cruel streak, but that makes his choice to be who he was (a man who went into hiding with his wife and infant son instead of continuing to fight and ‘hunt glory’) and sacrifices he made all the more compelling. I also believe despite his perceived over confidence he struggled with insecurity at times and used his arrogance as a defection technique.

As the only son of an elderly couple, I believe James grew up loved but longing for stimulating companionship – enter one Sirius Black.

Sirius is not the opposite of James but nor are they simply different shades of the same character (à la Fred/George), but his compliment. Enigmatic, carelessly clever, full of quick biting wit and wicked grins, determined, precise and inquisitive. He had a dark sense of humour and devil may care attitude (concealing a burning sense of loyalty and love for those he cares for). Despite his effort to reject his family, was still entitled and disdainful at times and his moral compass was always a little off kilter. But he fought for what he believed in, no matter the personal cost (and it did cost him enormously). Yes he could be haughty, snarky, apathetic and cruel at times, but he could have so easily have chosen the easy path so many times but he never ever did (even in GoF, he’d successfully avoided capture at the end of PoA and seemingly shaken the Ministry off his tail. He was lounging on a beach somewhere getting some much needed R&R, likely never to be found, but he came back for Harry out of love, loyalty and duty). He also has one of the captivating aesthetics in the entire series… flying motorbike, careless good looks, long hair and a kind of enthralling aloofness (i.e. he is downright sexy 😉).

Together Sirius and James are somehow even more fascinating.

Inseparable, too-clever-for-their-own-good, impossibly handsome boys who are somehow both the most popular boys in the school and complete magical nerds (which I think speaks entirely to their charisma). I completely reject the idea that Sirius is some kind of sidekick to James. My reading is that they are the consummate equals: intellectually, in magical skill and in their leadership of their own school yard gang. They challenged each other to push harder, to be smarter. But they also endlessly supported each other and egged the other on (even when they maybe shouldn’t have). They each have their individual strengths but they never appear to be envious or covetous of what they lack, which I feel is quite unusual in friendships between teenagers, even really close ones (look at Harry and Ron, even they have aspects of the other they are envious of). On a darker note, I think they were entirely too lenient/ forgiving of the others’ flaws and would defend each other to the very end, even when it was S or J in the wrong.

IMO this pairing makes such a fertile ground for fanfiction. Even that first meeting you have this almost Romeo / Juliet-esque aspect with their families on opposite sides of the ideological divide; there’s also that instant connection / meeting your equal / melding of the minds kind of thing going on; and I kind of letting loose for the first time (James letting himself lean into his more cruel arrogant side, Sirius allowing himself to break out of the mould of the Black heir by disparaging the Slytherin house). They would absolutely be the kind of idiots to fake date (or marry) or practice kiss (or more) or try friends with benefits, and then fall in love (or more likely realise they had already been in love this whole time). They’d also entirely be the type to angst over loosing their friendship and try to stop themselves from falling in love/pretend they hadn’t. Or be so obvious about the fact they are already in love with the other (“all people fell this way about their best friends… don’t they?”) that they would go years before realising.

Anyway this got really long so I’m going to leave it here.

Favorite Tropes for Prongsfoot:

1. Soulmates AU - James and Sirius are practically soulmates in canon, so I love actually having them be soulmates. 

2. Mindlink Mates - I’ve never read any of these, but in canon, they’re so close they likely could read each other’s minds, so it fits perfectly for them.

3. Fake Dating AU - I love fics where they are undercover or have to pretend for some reason and fall in love.  

4.  Best Friends to Lovers - they would be the living embodiment of the Best Friends to Lovers Trope.

5. James Lives - in a world where James survives Halloween of ‘81, Sirius helps pick up the pieces and they fall in love in the process.

6. Mutual Pining, but afraid to tell each other - this is something that would totally work in canon and I love it.

7. Only One Bed - cuddling always leads to more, right?  (Wink).

8. Everyone Knows - everyone thinks they know that James and Sirius are together, until they discover the opposite (which eventually prompts them together). 

9. Oblivious Idiots - these two would be the type secretly pine and somehow be oblivious to each other’s feelings.

10.  Friends with Benefits to Lovers - This is another canon thing that I could see: James and Sirius decide to be each other’s firsts for everything and continue a sexual relationship while falling for each other.  

Yup. There’s probably more because I love EVERYTHING James & Sirius, but this is long enough.

DAY 3 - Favorite Canon/Potentially Canon moment

My favorite Canon/Potentially Canon Moment(s) for Prongsfoot are: 

1. The Moment where James likely gave up on Lily and Sirius supporting James through the aftermath of the DADA OWL.

2.  The Moment that Sirius arrived at the Potter household after running away - I imagine James taking care of him.  Reminding him that he’s loved and wanted and just supporting him.

3.  The Moment that James asking Sirius to be his Best Man (obviously this is platonic, for canon) but I imagine that Sirius is beyond touched.  

4.  The Moment that James asks Sirius to be Harry’s godfather.  

5. The Moment they’re reunited in the beyond.  I imagine it’s quite the reunion.
