Roddacember runs during December to celebrate all of Emily Rodda’s books. With a new prompt every day, make a piece of fan content of your choice. You can draw some art, write fic, make a playlist, rant about something, or whatever you vibe with! Remember to tag it #Roddacember 2023 so we can check it out <3 I’ve also created an AO3 collection for those who would like to write fics!

This is my attempt at taking the best of the past years and bringing something for everyone. What I've come up with are three levels of abstraction that (hopefully) serve as different levels of difficulty. The first week-ish draws more from 2019's style, and the last couple weeks are the more recent style, with the middle being a segue between them. (i kinda struggled to make questions, but you're welcome to use the prompts as keywords for your own!)

“What would Kota think?”

2019-2021

This is a long-overdue gifset. I meant to finish it in November 2021, then I meant to finish it in early 2022, then, well, May 2022 happened, and the Golden Lovers story effectively got put on ice, so I shelved the gifset, too. But now we have reason to hope again, so here it is. The Golden Lovers’ path has never been a straightforward or easy one.

I’ve seen Kota Ibushi described as a “ghost” that haunted Kenny Omega for those few years, but I don’t think that’s quite accurate. Kota has been part of the fabric of AEW itself since the very beginning. Despite the fact that he has yet to make an actual appearance, he has been present in direct references and allusions, in the Golden Lovers symbol on the shoulder of Kenny’s gear, and in the golden “E” in “AEW”, which originally came from the Golden Elite.

Without Kota Ibushi, AEW as we know it would not exist. Of course, a large part of that is his continuing influence on anything and everything that Kenny does. Kenny Omega only really tells one story. It’s the same story that he has been telling his whole career. Sometimes it’s a quiet, subtle story, and sometimes it’s a very loud one. Sometimes it’s both at the same time.

The first direct, unmistakable reference to Kota in AEW happened in an infamous Undertale-themed VTR on October 30, 2019. In it, Kenny is plagued by his own insecurity (which was not helped by Kota’s recent G1 win, in contrast to Kenny’s recent failures in AEW), and a seductive voice tries to prompt him to let it take control before his other tag partners leave him, too. But Sans steps in to stave off the inevitable, and Kenny manages to keep it together—for about a year or so.

The next reference happens a little over a week later, at Full Gear on November 9. Kenny has an unsanctioned match with Jon Moxley, and he brings out all sorts of weapons, including a horrific bed of barbed wire that Hangman Page and the Young Bucks were reluctant to help him with. But what gets him in the end isn’t any weapon, but a failed Phoenix Splash (Kota’s first finisher) onto the exposed wood of the ring. From there, Mox hits a Paradigm Shift and pins him. Kenny could endure broken glass and barbed wire, but the one pain he couldn’t withstand is the pain of a broken heart.

After that, he tries to retreat back into the only comfort he knows: tag team wrestling. He pressures Hangman into tagging with him, and the two of them set their sights on tag team gold. Miraculously, they manage to make it work, winning the titles a scant month and a half or so before the world shuts down. Kenny’s main focus is on tag team wrestling during this time, but in order to fix one major blemish on his singles record, he ends up wrestling Pac in an ironman match on February 26, 2020. One of the moves he pulls out is unmistakably a Kamigoye (Kota’s current finisher).

A few days after that, on February 29, Kenny and Hangman defend their titles against the Young Bucks at Revolution. It’s a match with quite a few references and callbacks (especially to the Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks match in 2018), but the most striking moment was the Bucks hitting Kenny with a Golden Trigger (the Golden Lovers’ finisher), which Kenny kicks out of after a mere 1-count, prompting a massive response from the crowd. No one can weaponize the Golden Lovers’ own love against him like that.

The end of that match portends division and betrayal between the four men, but before the story can continue as planned, the covid-19 pandemic hits, and everything in the world of pro wrestling changes.

The year that follows is a hard one. Kenny’s AEW tag title run has a cruel symmetry with Kota’s concurrent NJPW tag title run. Just as Kenny and Hangman finally find their equilibrium, FTR arrives to sow conflict, The Elite fractures, Kenny and Hangman drop the titles, and Kenny gives up on tag team wrestling. Everything in the Undertale VTR had come to pass. Having nowhere else to go, he goes to an old family friend: Don Callis.

Then, at Winter Is Coming on December 2, wrestling in frigid 40°F weather at the open-air Daily’s Place, Kenny beats Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship, thanks to Don Callis helping him cheat. The two of them abscond with the title after the so-called “golden screwjob”, and Kenny takes it somewhere the Young Bucks aren’t willing to follow him—Impact Wrestling.

Thus kicks off the Belt Collector arc. Kenny soon acquires two new/old goons: Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, both former members of Bullet Club. He starts considering himself part of Bullet Club again, and declares his intent to collect more belts besides the AEW one (and the AAA Mega Championship, which he already had), starting with Impact.

On January 4, 2021, Kota Ibushi wins the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships at Wrestle Kingdom in NJPW. A few days after that, Kenny posts an Instagram story wherein he looks at Sports Illustrated’s list of the top 10 wrestlers of 2020. Kenny is number five on the list, and Kota is number eight. We can see that Kenny was looking at Kota’s entry before he looked at his own.

Then, on January 28, on the three year anniversary of their reunion, Kota tweets at Kenny, proposing that their two companies change the industry together. Kenny replies, using Nak’s translation as a mediator, and says, “Already feeling lonely in the Kingdom I left for you? Shall I destroy it? Take my hand, we’ll build a new one”. Kota responds to him, but receives no answer.

A few days after that, on February 3, Kenta appears on AEW Dynamite, blowing the so-called Forbidden Door between AEW and NJPW wide open. From that point on, we’re truly in uncharted territory.

Kenny challenges for (and wins) the Impact World Championship in April, but leading up to that match, Don simultaneously stokes Kenny’s ego and tries to gaslight him into erasing Kota from his own history. He encourages Kenny to repeatedly say that no one has ever kicked out of the One Winged Angel (only one person actually has: Kota Ibushi. He’s the source of Kenny’s greatest strength and his greatest weakness). However, no matter how much Don tries, Kenny’s age-old insecurity emerges on March 23, when Don names a long list of wrestlers that Kenny is supposedly better than, and Kenny yells out “Bigger than Ibushi!”

Kenny names Kota again in a AAA promo on August 31, listing him among the best high flyers in the world. It’s abundantly clear that to Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi is the greatest wrestler in the world. No matter how far Kenny goes, no matter how many belts he collects, no matter how many accolades he receives, Kota Ibushi will always stand above him in his own mind. Kenny will never be able to outrun him or let go of him. He can’t fill the hole in his heart with a new tag partner, and he can’t fill it with belts, either.

While all of this is happening, Kota is unfortunately not having the greatest summer of his life. He loses the IWGP belt to Will Ospreay on April 4, then gets aspiration pneumonia in July. He participates in the G1 Climax tournament in September and manages to make it all the way to the finals, but he dislocates his shoulder after a failed Phoenix Splash while facing Kazuchika Okada on October 21.

Kenny’s own injuries come back to haunt him, too, but his autumn goes a little bit better.

Adam Cole—an actual ghost from Kenny’s past—comes back to sow trouble for the Elite (though it takes a while to actually manifest), debuting at All Out on September 5 along with Bryan Danielson. Bryan wrestles Kenny a couple weeks later in his first match as an AEW member, on September 22 at Grand Slam. He forces Kenny to fight him with everything he has, and for just a moment, Bryan is able to draw out the Best Bout Machine instead of the Belt Collector. As he always does in his moments of greatest need, Kenny reaches for Kota Ibushi, and once again executes a Phoenix Splash, which, as always, he is unable to actually hit. This time, it doesn’t end in tragedy, though. Instead, the match goes to a full time limit draw.

The death knell for the Belt Collector looms near, however. Hangman Page earns himself a shot at the AEW World Championship at Full Gear on November 13. Three days before the match, they hold a contract signing for it on Dynamite.

Hangman, who knows Kenny very well by this point, is able to read the subtext. He finally figures it out. He realizes that everything Kenny said to him, everything that he did to him and with him, it was never actually about Hangman. It all sprung from a deeper wound that Kenny has carried with him all this time. As soon as Hangman figures this out, nothing Kenny does to him can hurt him anymore. "But if I remember, you once had another tag team partner who maybe you felt like you didn't measure up to either."

That one line also does something else that’s very important: it brings Kota Ibushi out of AEW’s subtext and into the main text. He’s part of the story now. And he always was. (The man himself liked a gif of Hangman’s “you once had another tag partner” line on twitter shortly after it happened. If there was ever any doubt that he’d been keeping up with what Kenny was doing in his absence, it’s gone now.)

Maybe the best illustration of this is a front row sign that a fan brings to Hangman and Kenny’s match at Full Gear a few days later. “What would Kota think?” Kenny stops to stare at it for a long moment before entering the ring. Years earlier, he’d talked about being so surprised and thrilled that the fans had managed to pick up on the Golden Lovers story leading up to their reunion in NJPW. He was so touched by the fact that the fans had known their history, after all that time. I wonder if he felt something similar here. It was in many ways the culmination of his efforts. The story made deeply tangible, here at the climax of its most difficult chapter.

As was always meant to happen, Kenny loses to Hangman and drops the AEW title. He makes one last onscreen appearance on November 17, 2021 before temporarily stepping away from AEW and away from wrestling so that he can recuperate from years of overworking himself. He says, “I feel like... there’s things I gotta fix, there’s things I gotta change, and I can’t do it here.” Is his relationship with Kota one of those things he had to fix?

Here’s where the story gets a bit hazy. Unfortunately, the year that follows does not go particularly well for either of the Golden Lovers, and plans have to get rewritten. Their respective injuries take longer than expected to heal, which leads to Kota having a falling out with NJPW in May 2022 after they try to force him to come back to the ring too soon. Kenny is finally able to make his own return in August 2022, but he returns to a troubled backstage environment, which finally boils over during the media scrum after All Out on September 4. Kenny and the rest of the Elite are forced to vacate their freshly won Trios Championships, and they all get suspended for a few months during the investigation.

But even in the darkest of moments, things aren’t all bad. The Golden Lovers reunite in a restaurant in Japan on September 15. They reunite on their own terms, outside of any company. The future is still a bit unclear for them, but wherever the story goes next, they want to do it right. “Because the tag team with him is more special to me than anything,” Kota says. He asks Kenny to wait for him, and Kenny assures him that he’ll wait as long as it takes. They both proclaim that the Golden Lovers aren’t over.

One day, the stars will align for them again. If it happens in AEW, the stage is already set. "What would Kota think?” was the question posed at the end of 2021. Maybe one day we will get to hear his answer.

Oh Canada! Oh no!

A trans-identified male athlete has taken the top spot in yet another Canadian women’s running competition, adding to the growing list of victories against female athletes he has claimed since transitioning.

Tiffany Newell, 50, has now placed first in the women’s indoor 1500 meter running competition for women aged 50-54, which was held in Toronto, Ontario this past week. This is Newell’s latest victory and has added to his long list of first-place rankings and records in women’s running competitions.

On January 8, Newell took the top spot in the women’s 3000 meter for women aged 45-49 at the Winter Mini Meet, and would rank first in the women’s 5000 meter for women aged 45-49 just days later.

He then went on to rank first in the 1500 meter for women aged 45-49 on February 5, and, following a birthday which placed him in a new age category, ranked first in the 1500 meter in the category for women aged 50-54 in a competition held from February 23 to February 26 in Toronto.

The news of Newell’s latest victory was announced by the International Consortium on Women’s Sport, a campaign group advocating for sexed categories, prompting anger and disbelief from those concerned with the preservation of women’s sport.

“That is ridiculous and no fan of athletics will view it as any sort of achievement,” wrote Colin Winter in response to the announcement. “It is a farce & everyone knows it but too many are too frit to say so. Frit is no excuse. If one’s job is to protect the integrity of a sport, that is what one has to do. If unable to do so, resign.”

Some have also expressed concern that Newell’s new age classification will result in him now seizing the 5000 meter title from Maria Zambrano, a female athlete with multiple records across the age groups she has competed in.

Last year, Newell set a Canadian record in the 5000 meter indoor running competition for women aged 45-49 held at Toronto’s York University. Newell ran 18:02.30over the distance, besting the previous record by six seconds. His record was ratified by the Canadian Masters Athletics in December, and it became the first time a trans-identified male athlete in Canada broke a national record in track.

At that same competition, Newell also placed first in the women’s 800 meter race for women aged 45-49.

His victories earned him an “honorable mention” as the Ontario Master’s Athlete of the Month in March of 2022, just one month after snatching the top spots.

In January of 2023, Newell placed first in the women’s 5000 meter for women aged 45-49 once again during the Ontario Master’s Mini Meet held in Toronto.

Previously, Newell won a silver medal at the 2021 Canadian XC Championships in the masters 8K, and also finished second at the 2022 Hamilton Marathon.

Newell began transitioning in 2017, but began competing in women’s sport in 2020 after claiming to have met the recommended testosterone levels as set by the World Athletics guidelines on transgender athletes.

Last June, the global regulator for swimming, diving and water polo issued a ruling barring transgender athleteswho experienced male puberty from swimming and other aquatic sports. FINA opted to create an “open category” instead in order to preserve the fairness of sexed categories. The decision came after international backlash surrounding the success of Lia Thomas, a trans-identified male, in women’s swimming.

In an interview with Running Magazine earlier this year, Newell rejected the concept of an “open category” for transgender athletes in running, and claimed he should be allowed to compete against females as he identified as such.

“The policy makes sense for non-binary athletes, but I don’t feel comfortable racing against men. It categorizes me in the sex I am not identified as,” Newell said. “I am a woman, and I feel most comfortable racing against women or other transgender women. I believe an open category can work if athletes can continue to race against athletes of the same gender.”

Despite protests from trans activists, studies have consistently affirmed that trans-identified male athletes retain a significant edge over their female counterparts, even after starting hormone therapy.

In 2020, a study released in the British Journal of Sport Medicine noted that trans-identified males were able to complete 31% more push-ups and 15% more sit-ups in one minute on average than a female Air Force service member. They also ran 1.5 miles 21% faster.

But even after two years on testosterone suppression treatment, the males were still 12% faster on average than biological females.

A/n- I looove Draco x Hufflepuff!Reader imagines! Thanks for requesting, hope you like it! By the way, this is very stereotypical, but that’s because I fit the Hufflepuff stereotype to a tee so I am just using my own personal experience.

Christmas, your favorite holiday. For more than one reason, there were cookies, present giving, and cute sweaters you can wear. But the best thing was that you got to do all of that with your boyfriend.

It was Christmas break and your parents went on a trip to go visit your grandparents. You stayed behind because, one, you really didn’t like traveling, and two, Draco was staying behind at Hogwarts for Christmas too so you wanted to stay with him.

You were one of the only Hufflepuff’s to stay behind for Christmas, most of them went back home to spend it with their family. But your lack of friends wasn’t going to ruin your Christmas spirit!

You spent about two hours getting dressed for Christmas, your outfit consisted of festive leggings, an ugly Christmas sweater that lit up, festive socks, and finally, reindeer ears.

You were visibly shaking with excitement while you were walking to the Great Hall, freshly baked cookies, courtesy of you, in your hands. You also had your bag slung around your shoulder, trying to take out a Christmas present you had for Draco out of it.

Once you entered the Great Hall, you were struggling with everything in your hands. Draco, who was slumped over at the Slytherin table awaiting your arrival, noticed your struggles and hurried over to help you because the last time you dropped your plate of cookies you didn’t stop crying for hours which broke Draco’s heart.

“Darling,” Draco panicked and held his arms out, waiting for something, or someone, to fall. You looked up suddenly, arms all tangled up, and smiled.

“Merry Christmas, I brought cookies!” you beamed and held out the plate to him, the creases on your face from your smile making Draco swoon. “They smell delicious,” Draco cooed and took them from you before placing a kiss on your forehead.

A few boys snickered at you both as they walked into the Great Hall. Draco sent a glare their way before looking back at you and smiling, you looked so cute to him at the moment. Your outfit, the fact that you baked cookies, and the gleeful look you had on; he was just besotted with you.

“You are too adorable with those reindeer ears,” Draco commented and played with one of the bells hanging off of the antler that made it much more festive. A blush painted your cheeks as you looked down toward the floor and started rocking back and forth on your heels, “Thank you.”.

You looked back up at him and looked over to the Hufflepuff table. “Well, I better go sit down,” you told him and started walking. Draco grabbed you by your bicep and pulled you back, “Nonsense. You’re sitting with me,” he scoffed and grabbed your hand, pulling you over to the Slytherin table.

Once you two sat down, Draco immediately pulled you into his side and grabbed you a plate, putting food on it. He placed all of your favorites on the plate and handed it to you, “Here you are love.”. “Thank you!” you exclaimed and immediately dug in. Draco grinned down at you which made a few Slytherins snigger.

“Oh shut up, Zabini,” Draco growled and Blaise just shrugged his shoulders before chuckling again and talking with the others. He looked back over at you and placed his head in his hand, resting his elbow on the table just admiring you.

He found everything about you adorable no matter what. It was like you two were made for each other. Draco protected you with everything he had and you helped him to be a better version of himself. You looked over at Draco to see him staring at you causing more blush to spread across your cheeks.

“I’m just that adorable, aren’t I?” you joked, but Draco was dead serious. “Yes, yes you are,” he said and scrunched his nose shaking his head all cutesy, making you giggle. His heart thumped at the noise and he wrapped an arm around your shoulder before leaning down to whisper in your ear.

“You know what? I don’t want this feast because you look much more delicious right now,” he whispered, making your whole body go scarlet. “Draco, stop,” you giggled and hid your face in his chest.

“Only telling the truth, darling,” he said, you could practically hear the smirk in his voice. “Oh my Godric,” you laughed and hit his chest before pulling away and going back to eating.

“What? I am just infatuated with you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. So get used to it darling, or else you’ll be in for a wild ride for the rest of your life,” he told you before eating as well. You only giggled but your heart was going a million miles a minute.

Did he just proclaim that you two were going to be together forever?

COVID-19 deaths in aged care facilities are still too common - Published Aug 26, 2024

The health system needs to take an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to ensure at-risk people in aged care communities have prompt access to vaccination, testing and treatment for COVID-19.

In 2024, hundreds of Australians are still dying from COVID-19, especially at-risk vulnerable elderly people in aged care facilities (ACFs). Indeed, in the three month periods leading up to July 2023 and July 2024, there were very similar numbers of deaths in ACFs from COVID-19: the total for 3 May to 26 July 2024 was 442 deaths, compared to the similar period, 5 May to 27 July 2023, with 439 deaths.

Looking at the wider graph of COVID-19 deaths in aged care facilities (below), we see the ongoing issue of deaths in aged care facilities, while deaths in the broader community have declined considerably.

In Australia, around 1000 COVID-19 deaths were recorded each year in 2020 and 2021, but, after opening up, at least 12 000 perished during 2022. Several thousand died in 2023, when the “milder” Omicron strains dominated in a new period of increased mixing and much-reduced social distancing.

In 2023, when the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) was rescinded, the WHO director stated that there remained significant ongoing concerns regarding COVID 19 deaths and disease.

So, what is going wrong in our aged care facilities? Why aren’t we winning the war on COVID-19? In one recent July week, there were about 400 active outbreaks, with 2000 infected residents.

Once again, we need closer attention to infection control. High quality non-pharmaceutical interventions make a difference and are essential in aged care and other closed community settings to ameliorate virus spread. In addition, disappointedly, only about 44% of aged care residents (aged 75+ years) have had the recommended COVID booster in the past 6 months and many infected people are not getting a COVID anti-viral drug early enough.

We have a near perfect storm creating an ongoing high death rate in ACFs.

Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) — named after the hammer of the Norse god, Thor — has been most prescribed (around 128 000 times), while Paxlovid has been prescribed 10 times fewer.

But following the declarations of the National Clinical Evidence Taskforce, molnupiravir is now considered second-line (albeit still useful). In short, it is deemed less effective than Paxlovid (Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) — what might be called the “peace and love” drug — in preventing severe disease.

GPs face the difficult task of determining if a COVID-test-positive vulnerable ACF resident, with multiple medical problems, should take Molnupiravir or Paxlovid while also being treated with other essential medications. It requires skill, but we believe it is time well spent to ensure the at-risk have optimal treatment to reduce the risk of complications further down the line. Research suggests a high level of protection from use of Paxlovid in preventing severe COVID-19.

The major impediment to widespread use of Paxlovid has been concern over drug–drug interactions where the body’s blood level of other important drugs (for example, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-arrhythmics, some statins, and anticoagulants) may be seriously altered by taking Paxlovid, but not impaired by using Molnupiravir.

Paxlovid is widely available in Australia but has been used sparingly. The health system needs, again, to take an “all hands on deck” approach to ensure at-risk people in aged care communities have prompt access to vaccination, testing and treatment and that non-pharmaceutical interventions, including rapid antigen tests (RATs) for staff and visitors, are effectively implemented; that means better supporting GPs and better educating patients, relatives and aged care staff on the recommended approaches.

While we have been generally successful in the war on COVID-19 in Australia, doctors on the ground know that the war on COVID-19 is not over yet. A brief survey of six GPs revealed all have ongoing concerns and all endeavour to prescribe the most effective anti-viral treatment based on online guides like the Liverpool Tracker. The war on COVID-19 continues and we need to break the stalemate of so many vulnerable elderly still perishing.

We also know we must now prepare for the next pandemic, which is likely to be a novel influenza or coronavirus.

As Winston Churchill said: “If you wish for peace, prepare for war.”

This is a really tough question, it's almost like having to decide whether I love my son or my daughter more 🙈, impossible. But maybe some fics are a bit special for other reasons.

So, here they are: Let's start with the fic that brought me back into writing fanfic after more than 15 years of neither writing nor reading any at all, my very first Witcher fic:

Ashes to Ashes:

At the end of the Battle of Sodden Hill, a distressed Cahir looks at the burning forest. (Published: 2020-10-12; Words: 417; Chapters: 1/1). (I'm a bit proud of it, too, because it has some nice alliterations and other stylistic devices, I think)

This here is my longest fic so far, although it was supposed to have only 5 chapters. Then along came a couple of nice prompt events and it ended up with 18 🙈:

To kill or not to kill

On Thanedd Ciri is cornered by the black knight of her nightmares. And really wants to kill the man who, in her mind, is responsible for all the bad things that have happened to her, for everything she has lost. Wants to shove her sword through his throat until his feathers are soaked in blood...

This is the story of how Cahir comes to join Geralt's company (Cahir's POV, mix of books and S1-2 of the Netflix series, spoilers for Baptism of Fire, might have spoilers for S4, Published: 2022-08-05; Completed: 2023-04-08; Words: 58,316; Chapters: 18/18)

And the first ever fic I wrote for a prompt event, the Witcher Trick or Treat 2022. I was pretty proud that I managed to use all 11 prompts in one story in the correct order of the prompts and on the precise day. It was a lot of fun to write with some humour, a little whump, a pinch of smut and a scary monster song by our favourite bard:

Creatures of the Night

While Geralt's Hanza is staying in Beauclair, the famous fall event is coming up. An event the Witcher cannot refuse to take part in, even though he does have to dress up for it. However, not everything goes as planned and the members of the Hanza are in for some surprises. Blame it on the grape punch. Or is it the bard's fault after all? Another first, my very first smut fic. No idea if it's any good, but I like it - well, it's Jaskier/Mermaid 🧜‍♀️ 🌊 😅.

Last but not least, there is my first crack fic. The little plot bunny came to me in the middle of the night, no idea where from. I find it pretty funny:

During their stay at Beauclair Castle, Geralt's Hansa play a game of cards. It soon turns out that not all the Hansa members enjoy it equally much, although Regis claims that it is both entertaining and enlightening. At least, Angoulême is having fun.
