finished project: mussleburgh by ysolda teague
yarn: knit picks elixir in grenadine
this was such an enjoyable lil project and definitely won't be my last one of these hats! idk yet if i'll keep it myself or just keep it on hand for a potential future gift.
i knit this one on 3.25mm needles using the 7st gauge numbers in the pattern but went for a size between the adult small and adult medium. i probably could've gotten away with the small and had it fit fine but i was worried it would be too tight so now i know for next time.
more excitingly, i have also finished my spark cardi but she's still drying.

Christmas Day I cast on my own musselburgh :) was a slow process since I don’t prioritize my own knits but finally finished it! one exciting thing is that after nearly 2 years of bringing my projects to the theatre, I actually had the confidence to work on this in the dark while at the movies with my roommates

October 4th 1821 saw the death of John Rennie, the famous engineer who constructed the Crinan Canal.
Rennie is always overshadowed by Thomas Telford when it comes to our great civil engineers but Rennie was very much respected and his work on canals, aqueducts, bridges and dockyards mark him as one of the greatest engineers of his age.
John Rennie was born June 7, 1761 at East Linton, sometimes called “the Elder,” to distinguish him from his engineer son John junior, he designed canals from the 1790s onwards during the golden age of canal building Rennie made his initial mark with his aqueducts, which carried canals across rivers or other canals, structures I myself love, two I have been over many times carry the Union Canal, are over The Water of Leith in Edinburgh, and the River Avon near Linlithgow, although I digress as these were by another engineer, Hugh Baird.
After making a name for himself in Scotland London came calling and aged 29 he moved down there and set up his own engineering business in 1791, his biggest project being the original Waterloo Bridge, which was demolished between the wars in the 1930's after structural damage was discovered. One of John Rennie's last projects was the construction of the Custom House Docks in Dublin, which were completed in 1821.
Some of Rennie's works in Scotland, as seen in the pictures include, Kelso Bridge, pics one and two, Musselburgh Bridge, Ken Bridge, near New Galloway, and the aforementioned Crinan Canal in Argyll and Bute.

Musselburgh Hat #18
Greetings! I found a lot of inspiration for this hat from the Norwegian History of the Red Beanie. It’s an interesting read if you have the time to check it out. I dyed the yarn for my hat with Kool Aid. I enjoy the vibrant red dye that you get from Kool Aid and the mess is pretty easy to clean up unless you spill.

On Saturday, I realised I didn’t have any projects with plain stockinette that would be appropriate for dark theatre knitting and I had 2 events/shows over Sun & Mon - so I cast on a #MusselburghHat on Saturday and got through the increases, ready for #SixTheMusical on Sunday - this is how much I got done during the show and dinner with friends afterwards! Today we’re going to the Bat Out Of Hell musical, so we’ll see how much I get done there! 07 April 2018 - Tried doing some outdoor shots at Musselburgh beach earlier today. I really should have metered between each photo, but I was chasing time because the rain was coming... And of course, that's all the more reason why I should have metered each time. The light was very temperamental. Alack and alas... Next time, I'll be sure to be more diligent despite impending rain.

january wrap up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wasn't sure how i wanted to handle this blog so idk if i'll do updates every month or just as i finish projects or something else entirely but we'll start here for now!
these are the main projects i'm currently working on (links to ravelry pattern pages).
spark cardi, v neck sweater*, afterthought-everything sock tube, musselburgh hat
*the pattern i'm using for this one unfortunately has a trash size range so the home sweater v neck has an Extremely similar look with a more inclusive size range
spark by andrea mowry
yarn: briggs and little regal in light brown heather, patons kroy sock in copper colors held double (colour combo blatantly copied from @birch.grove bc i fell in love with it)
this was a languishing wip with just the sleeves and bottom body ribbing done for like...3 years? decided at the beginning of january i wanted it done and off my needles so i've been powering through. just ~2" of the shawl collar left to go! might end up being a gift for my mom if it fits her bc she really loves this one. this was my first experience with steeking and it went perfectly fine, probably mostly thanks to the v rustic briggs & little yarn.
v neck sweater
yarn: loops and threads heathered tweed in basil
i've knit this sweater in this same yarn once before (in black, it's in my profile pic) and i wear it alllllll the time so decided i needed a second one. i sized up for this one bc i thought i wanted an even more oversized fit but i'm not 100% yet on if that was the right call. worst case it'll be a cozy sweater i don't wear out or my mom will get another new sweater out of it lmao
sock tube
yarn: london house yarns sparkle sock in baubles
this was a new year's cast on while i was still feeling festive and it's been my desk/meeting knitting. finished the tube on jan 31st so now it'll probably wait until i decide what contrast colour heels, toes & cuffs i wanna add. i'm thinking white but i don't have a plain white sock yarn in my stash rn so 🤷🏻‍♀️ no rush to finish these tho.
musselburgh hat by ysolda teague
yarn: knit picks elixir in grenadine
this is now gonna be my desk project. i needed something small and simple to work on while i spent my dad's birthday with him near the end of the month and i had an weird amount of this yarn that i wasn't totally sure what to do with so. my first musselburgh! just gonna knit to whatever length i can get with the 2 balls of yarn i have

a lot of nervous energy for me lately so I’m trying to cast on and start projects to keep myself busy! I ordered these on sale (!) to make hats for two of my brothers friends based on what I think would look nice on them. I finished a sophie scarf yesterday, cast on a second musselburgh in this blue colour and might cast on a pair of socks if things aren’t getting better. any movie/tv show recommendations are appreciated! I’ve been watching Friday night lights

Repair vs Replacement – Our Guide
Your driveway may not be something that you think about on a daily basis, however, it is undeniably an essential part of your home. Driveways enable access the garage, offers space for parking and provides an even surface for your family to engage in outdoor activities; like football in the garden and family barbeques. Also, a driveway completed to our highest of standards adds further aesthetic appeal to your home.
Tumblr media
If your driveway has seen better days, you may have to decide whether you want to repair or replace it. But how do you decide? Repair vs replacement? No matter which option you are going for, it is not going to be cheap. Hallmark Driveways can offer professional advice and aid in fixing any issue. To help you make a decision, here are a few things that you need to consider:
Repair vs Replacement: The Age of Your Driveway
Driveways typically last for approximately 20 years. This means that if your driveway is over or is almost 20 years old, then you should consider replacing it. That being said, replacing your driveway is not the only solution. Depending on the damage, resurfacing or patching your driveway can be another option for you.
Repair vs Replacement: The Appearance of Your Driveway
You have to consider how much the appearance of your driveway matters to you. For small cracks or sunken concrete slabs, you can fix them with a process known as slab jacking or mud jacking. However, these kinds of repairs may leave some visible signs afterwards. If these minor flaws on your driveway do not bother you, then a replacement may not be necessary. Regardless, you should still find out what a repair may do to your driveway before getting the work done.
Repairs vs Replacement: Whether You Plan to Sell the House
Another thing to consider is whether you are planning to put your home up for sale any time soon. If so, then you need to know how the repair or replacement is going to impact the sale. A newly replaced driveway may add value to your home while signs of repair may downgrade your home’s appeal. It is always a good idea to consult with a property surveyor for some guidance.
Repairs vs Replacement: The Driveway Material
If you want to change the material of your driveway, then having a replacement is a perfect opportunity to finally do it. When it comes to driveway materials, there are numerous options available for you these days, including asphalt, concrete, gravel, brick, block paving and cobblestone. In Scotland, a more luxurious and advanced option to consider is a heated driveway that can melt ice and snow. It is recommended that you check with your local council beforehand incase there are any limitations on your chosen type of driveway.
Repairs vs Replacement: The Cost Difference
Once you have taken everything into consideration the last deciding factor will be the cost of each job. Although a replacement typically costs more, it is worth noting that certain repairs can be as expensive as a replacement. Thus, it is important that you get approximate rates from a few contractors before you make a final decision. Hallmark Driveways is one of Edinburgh’s leading driveway, patio and landscaping companies.
We recently completed a project in Musselburgh, East Lothian which definitely required a replacement rather than repairs. Repairs would not have sufficed in this project. You can find videos of the project on our YouTube channel. Here is a link to the Works in Progress video, and here is a link to the finished result! Let us know in the comments what you think, we love to hear what the customers think.

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Sunday 24th June 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Sunday… Just me and Bella in the house, my wife flew to Sweden on Friday to meet with her youngest sisters future in-laws, I’ve been struggling to get over a rather bad bout of Bronchitis and most certainly did not feel up to all the airport travel, so I volunteered to stay with Bella rather than put her in the kennels, so it’s just Bella and me today, yes, the beach calls as does the World Cup on the TV so it will be a bit of both, it’s what I did yesterday and Friday after I took the family to the airport, early flights are tough, but they were all excited about going, so walk over, and a fresh cup of Colombian Coffee in the cup, let’s have a look at the news….
'DEVASTATED' RELATIVES PRAISE EFFORTS TO SAVE ZAINE GRIEVE'S LIFE…. Relatives of a 14-year-old boy who died after falling ill in Aberdeenshire have thanked everyone who tried to save his life. Zaine Grieve fell ill in the School Brae area of Portlethen at about 23:00 on Saturday. His family said in a statement: "We would like to thank the passersby who stopped and tried their best to save Zaine's life, as well as the emergency services who attended." They said they were "devastated". Police said the death was not suspicious but officers were trying to establish the exact circumstances. The teenager's family said: "We have been left absolutely devastated by the death of Zaine who was a much-loved son and brother. "Zaine was extremely popular and will be missed by all his family and many friends. "We would also like to thank everyone who has sent us messages of support."
BENJAMIN MYERS WINS WALTER SCOTT PRIZE 2018…. Author Benjamin Myers has been awarded the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction. He received his £25,000 award for his novel, The Gallows Pole, based on the true story of the Cragg Vale Coiners. The presentation was made by last year's winner, Sebastian Barry, at the Borders Book Festival in Melrose on Saturday. Myers said he would spend his winnings on "going to see the original line-up of Guns N' Roses in Reykjavik". He also planned to have a break after publishing seven books in eight years, to sit his back garden and "listen to birdsong". The prize was judged by a group including journalists James Naughtie, Kirsty Wark and Kate Figes, and writers Katharine Grant and Elizabeth Laird.
FIRST SUMMIT HELD ON TACKLING MARINE LITTER IN SCOTLAND…. A package of funds to help local communities reduce plastic consumption is being launched at the first summit on marine litter in Oban. The one-day event brings together retailers, environmental groups and manufacturers to find new ways of reducing plastic in Scottish waters. It has been organised by the Scottish government and comes on the eve of a ban on microbeads in Scotland. Groups will be encouraged to create alternatives to single-use plastics. It could mean creating publicly available facilities which enable people to re-fill containers with drinking water rather than having to buy new bottles. Another suggestion for the Action on Plastic Zero Waste Towns initiative is a scheme where takeaways are bought in returnable packaging. The supermarket Iceland, which recently installed Scotland's first "reverse vending" machine at its store in Musselburgh, is one of many retailers and environmental groups attending the summit. Others include Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries, Highland Spring, the Marine Conservation Society and the Nae Straw at Aw campaign. Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham said: "No one can escape the momentum that's been building around plastic waste and marine litter which is why we are bringing communities and the industry together at this summit to come up with new and innovative ways of tackling this problem. "This new Action on Plastic project will help communities find ways of reducing and reusing materials and preventing them from polluting our seas."
'WORLD-FIRST' MEDICINE CENTRE TO BE LOCATED IN SCOTLAND…. A multi-million-pound drug manufacturing "innovation centre" is to be located in Renfrewshire. The £56m plant near Glasgow Airport is expected to support 80 highly-skilled jobs within five years. The first centre of its kind in the world, it is also predicted to attract £80m of research and development investment by 2028. The work to be carried out is expected to speed up the rate at which new drugs come on to the market. With funding from both the public and private sector, including £15m from Scottish Enterprise, the project has been developed with input from key industry figures. Business minister Paul Wheelhouse said it was likely to be hugely beneficial to the Scottish economy. And he said the location of the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC) was a "positive endorsement" of Scotland's life and chemical science sectors. Conservative peer and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland Office, Lord Duncan, said the centre was "great news" for the UK's life sciences sector.
MARK BEAUMONT BREAKS BRITISH PENNY FARTHING RECORD…. Scots cyclist Mark Beaumont has broken the British record for the distance ridden on a Penny Farthing in one hour but missed out on the world record. Beaumont rode 21.92 miles in an hour to beat the 127-year-old British record at Herne Hill Velodrome in Surrey. But the Scottish cyclist was 290 yards short of the world record of 22 miles and 150 yards. Last year, 35-year-old Beaumont broke the record for cycling around the world. He completed the 18,000-mile route in 79 days. His round the world in 80 days adventure was inspired by Victorian-era novelist Jules Verne. For his latest challenge he reverted to Victorian-era transport. The Penny Farthing was one of the first contraptions to be called a bicycle and was popular in the late 19th Century. There have been very few attempts to break the Penny Farthing time trial records since they were set in the 1880s. The bike went out of fashion when more efficient and more convenient bicycles were made. However, he still did not beat the world record set in 1886 in Massachusetts by American William Rowe.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of Mark Beaumont being paced on his Penny Farthing while breaking the UK track record…
Tumblr media
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Sunday 24th June 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…
