SEEDS Security Codes and Why They Matter

So, I've been thinking about one of the details in Trigun: Stampede that was not present in either '98 or the manga. In '98, Knives just hacking into the SEEDS codes was left as-is. He walked up to Captain Joey and shot him and apparently took his pilot's seat. Did the Captain have the navigation open at the time? Was it closed and Knives had to do some hacking? Anyway, there, he did it on his own. Now, in Trigun Maximum, which treats Vash and Knives' childhood differently (just Rem there raising them), there is a foreshadowing of what is to come. In Volume 6, Rem is depicted waking up to an emergency signal in the middle of her sleeping-hours. (Aw, she sleeps in her regular clothes, mom-jeans and all...). Panicked, she yells at Knives for him and Vash to lock themselves in their rooms and not to come out or speak up for ANY reason, even if they hear voices outside. She tries to handle the situation, but it goes from bad to worse and the automatic crew-wakening protocol goes into effect, which she is very concerned about (for reasons that we who have read the manga know about)!

In the beginning of Volume 7 the crew wakes up, there's a situation-update. The ships are going off-course and will collide if things are not corrected. They're working through the issues and suddenly, there's an unknown factor that kicks in to correct the course. Rem then gets the crew all settled back in again for nappy-time... And proceeds immediately to Vash and Knives, where she scolds Knives with (Rem's angry mom-face, my beloved)! Knives was playing around with the ship codes and systems. He'd apparently hacked his way into the system and was curious about SEEDS' functions. (One would assume that Rem changed some of the codes after this, but I bet they were in some kind of hacking-war, with her trying to stay one step above curious Plant-twins). Knives did not mean to nearly cause a catastrophe, but this shows that he can and is a foreshadowing to when he DOES mean to cause one later. Now, in Trigun Stampede, it is stated by Nai / Knives that Vash gave him the ship-codes, also that he spent a lot of time and trouble changing the codes for every human ship. (The manga lists the ship they are born on as the Mothership, presumably guiding the entire fleet, in Stampede, it is just Ship 5, which implies multiple guides with multiple navigators). I am wondering where Studio Orange is going with this. Will it be a situation like the manga where the kids are just playing around? Little prank-war with Rem? Maybe Vash is sharing a ship code innocently, as part of their games? Or is it going to be darker, more sinister? I wonder if Vash was originally of the thought of "maybe we need to crash the ships and kill all humans (except Rem) because they're scary and dangerous because of what happened to Tesla" and then had a change of heart and backed out of it? - I can see that happening... him having his cathartic alone-time with Rem as in the manga and then talking things out with Nai and thinking that they weren't going to go through with it. And then Nai betrays him. I've been wondering about the guilt Vash carries over the Big Fall in Stampede. Is it an unnecessary, undue guilt like he seems to have about a lot of things? Or is there a guilt born from "I had originally planned disaster / we had originally planned disaster" and it came true even after he'd backed out? It's just that... in both '98 and Maximum, he does carry his cross (that is not Wolfwood's), but he seems to feel less specifically guilty over this (the Big Fall). He's really more like "Knives, how could you do this to everyone / Rem?!" He just seems more guilt-ridden in Stampede than in the other media and I am wondering if there is a dark secret behind it. I can see it going either way.

jfc... So, the SEEDs colony consisted of 1000 ships and the Big Fall caused the loss of 80 million people. Makes you wonder how many actually survived. Only about 7% of the ships did. 😭💔

Hey! ^^

You have mentioned that plants sing as a form of communication. Now you've got me kind of curious. Do independent plants maybe sing as well? ówò

My kids love to sing the Spongebob Squarepants theme at VERY loud pitch. Nai is also fond of standing behind me when I am trying to work and singing "The Song That Never Ends" on loop. But that's probably not what you were wondering. I have heard them both do vibration-harmonisation in the main reactor room - although briefly. The Spongebob-theme is heard much more often from the Independents on this ship on this ship. And, yes, I am very tired. _ R. S.

Graphic design is NOT my passion, and TBH I'm sure this would be easier if I was using an actual art program rather than Rhino but my first draft of Vash's patches is almost done. The stroke width could probably be thicker. I'm really hoping by the time I get around to making these, someone will have made an etsy listing already. If I get desperate, I can always cricut cut it I think but the embroidered look is way better for sure. I'm happy to share the file if you think it would be useful but as I said, it's pretty janky

The in-fighting for plant resources must have been damn horrific to risk a Last Run. Can you even imagine the the magnitude of bloodshed and destruction between waring human factions for the fast dewindling resources on a dying earth Before the SEEDS Project was developed.. ?! 😬

Ah! I have found it!  The thing that is bothering me and chewing on my brain...  What’s going on in my noggin is “Why are the records even there?!”  - As in, isn’t it dangerous?  to have them on-record as Plants in the ship at all?  Wouldn’t the crew find this when they woke up?   I *don’t* think that Rem wants to continue what happened to Tesla - that would be supremely out of character for her and out of step with the manga.  In the manga, she spoke to an awakened Conrad (less of a dick in the manga) confessing that she was going to take the twins into coldsleep with her with forged data and he informed her of the breach of protocol and how it was incredibly risky.  Rem was going to risk....probably incarceration, maybe even execution with a data-forge on their behalf, presumably going to pass them off as humans.  Stampede storyline bears this out when Rem is telling Knives to eat and drink even if he doesn’t need to when the rest of the crew wakes up, which gives me the impression that (now that their growth-rate has stabilized) she is going to try to pass them off as a pair of orphaned human children that she’s going to pass off as being rescued from a coldsleep-failure.  (Or, possibly, otherwise, she was going to be honest about their Plant nature, but with a huge caveat of “Look! They’re just like us!” - having Nai hide his powers and such).  I really do think the latter was more likely - pass them off as humans that needed to be rescued from a ship’s error.   So, why would Rem risk keeping actual records of them, and apparently recently updated as their pictures aren’t baby-pictures?   Does the SEEDS 5 ship record everything automatically? As in a computer records everything that happens there / the Plants record it all and Rem just has to keep things under encryption?  Are these Rem’s own records, kept for needed medical-profile and such and she keeps them under multiple locks so they really are For Her Eyes Only (including her personal  copy of the Tesla-files) and she is confident that the rest of the crew will not be able to access them?  Are they something that she needs now, but will erase / put some kind of failsafe-self-destruction on once the crew wakes?  Are they there, as needed, until she finishes a convincing forgery?  If it’s auto-kept, is Rem having trouble breaking the locks for her forging-crimes, but Nai got right in?   I suspect that Tessla and Vash’s folder being separate from Nai’s might have an “innocent” (but tragic) reason:  Maybe he and Tess are in the same “class” because they are similar - they have a higher load of human DNA while Nai has more of a Plant genetic profile.  Maybe one folder is in the way of Plant and Plant-powers folder while one is in the “leans human with human limitations” folder.   (I’m trying to figure this out for a fanfic I’m writing).  

In ep 11, Vash and Tesla's files were in the same folder. While Knives's is in another. So I think that Knives is more worried about Vash being next in line for the Tesla situation than fearing for himself.

At long last! Survivor's Guilt - my "Rem Lives" AU, has been edited! The 18 chapters that exist so far have been given revisions - mostly small edits, but I fixed the ship-naming thing that had been bothering me (picked a lane on ship-naming, choosing numericals over spelled out numbers where I had typed them out as both / used them interchangeably before). I fixed some of the usual tiny typographical errors, but I also changed a few plot-relevant things in response to learning tidbits posted about Orange's direction and after some discourse / analysis / conversation on Trigun-general plot things here on the tumbles. I also did some things to make the story more internally consistent, as one does with subsequent drafts. Ah, now I can get to actually writing more of it again!

It's a Project SEEDS logo and communication badge (like in Star Trek). I recall a scene (communicating with the Captain when she heard Rowan shooting Mary and was running down a hall to investigate). She pressed it and the little red gem lit up like it was a communications thing. If you notice carefully, the entire crew has them somewhere, as pins and such, Rem just wears hers as a necklace.

((I always thought that Rem was wearing a cross, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Anyone got any ideas as to what this is?))

working on putting together a longform playlist of music created by incarcerated black musicians; while my focus i think will ultimately be in the 1970s when a lot of soul/funk/R&B was being produced, i'm including music from a lot of different genres and eras that inform the long history of black music in prisons as performance of resistance; notably a lot of this music has not been officially digitized and thus is not on spotify but i look forward to cratedigging physically and on the internet to find more music
